Humor of the Week

A compromise is the art of dividing a cake in such a way that everyone believes he has the biggest piece.
(Ludwig Erhard – (1897 - 1977)

Welcome by: Pastor Daniel

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

…and once again, the Sermon first, with the Quotes as more of a Wrap-Up.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #392, is Compromise

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
How Versatile a word… Compromise. Don't you think?

Look at how many different ways that the word Compromise… or one of it's derivatives… can be used to have So Many Different Meanings! Not even to Mention different Emotions… although I may. Even Compromising Situations… Why, they have served Humanity for Generation after Generation with opportunities for recognizing, and perhaps even for Appreciating, Humor.

Here's a few sentences using the word “Compromise” (sort of), that came to My mind this morning while I was contemplating “Compromise” …or the occasional refusal to do same:

“Well, we can't afford to do all of the things we would really like to right now, so a few things we may have to…

or like,

“Ok so, I Really Love This, but don't particularly care for that---and You Really Love That but don't particularly care for This---there aught to be some way that we could perhaps…

or like,

“Who I Am, my Soul's Dreams and Goals (however flighty they may seem in the moment), my Faith, my Individuality, my Relationship (Whatever it may be) with God, My “Gut Instincts”, my Personal Morals, my Loyalties, my Principles, and all the things that make me, Me, I will Never…
(This is one my Soul gets Quite Emotional about.)

So then, moving on…

The human ego doesn't really like the word Compromise… rather despises it in fact. Ever notice how it Clings almost desperately to insignificant and petty little things… things that really matter very little and serve no recognizable purpose other than to exert an unnecessary and valueless level of control over another person? That's a Tough one to completely overcome, isn't it? It seems to just happen as a Reflex sometimes… even before ya have any opportunity to actually Think about it. The Key then I think, is to Actually Think about it.

“Does it really hurt me?”

“Is it more than I can live with?”

“Does it undeniably affect my personal happiness?”

“Does it conflict with my ability to be Who I Am?”

If not… then possibly it's just an ego thing and perhaps some sort of Compromise IS in order… or at least worth considering… Maybe?

Compromise… like everything else but God… is Good in Moderation. It can be quite unhealthy if used to the extreme… Especially if it is an un-willing Submission rather than a True and Equal Compromise. True Compromise is never one-sided, is it? But then, it's not a scorecard for staying Even either… or Shouldn't be if it is to maintain it's value as a peacemaking tool.

Isn't it funny how often it appears like “I'm” the one who seems to have to Compromise most of the time? I'd bet it seems that way to everyone else as well, no? Hmmm, Yes… funny Indeed.

Then again… with Budding Spiritual Beings trying to exist and grow in a material world with material problems… perhaps Truly, learning What and what Not to Compromise is the whole Purpose of the Material “Quest”?

I Wonder…

Quotes
*******
(From: Aaron - 7/11/03– the “Living Waters” TeaM Conference)
So often in your human attempts to feel unified with others you compromise your individuality to coexist peacefully with those around you, many, in an attempt to feel a sense of belonging. But true universal unity requires the maximum expression of individuality, not the selfish expression, not the sense of unbalanced focus on your needs at the expense of others, but the recognition that your individuality is as important as any other being's individuality. Trying to find your expression of your personality requires you to understand this idea.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-133 Section-7)
The human mind does not well stand the conflict of double allegiance. It is a severe strain on the soul to undergo the experience of an effort to serve both good and evil. The supremely happy and efficiently unified mind is the one wholly dedicated to the doing of the will of the Father in heaven. Unresolved conflicts destroy unity and may terminate in mind disruption. But the survival character of a soul is not fostered by attempting to secure peace of mind at any price, by the surrender of noble aspirations, and by the compromise of spiritual ideals; rather is such peace attained by the stalwart assertion of the triumph of that which is true, and this victory is achieved in the overcoming of evil with the potent force of good.

(From: Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982)
The spread of evil is the symptom of a vacuum. Whenever evil wins, it is only by default: by the moral failure of those who evade the fact that there can be no compromise on basic principles.

(From: Abraham - 12/29/00 The Woods Cross TeaM)
There are times when each family member must compromise to keep peace. All family members should be heard and served. Each one is important and love must come first. If you can imagine your lives without one another, certainly that would be a pain not to be forgotten. The difficulties you experience now will definitely be transformed into the family closeness of tomorrow.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-144 Section-6)
They learned to differ, to debate, to contend, to pray, and to compromise, and throughout it all to remain sympathetic with the other person's viewpoint and to maintain at least some degree of tolerance for his honest opinions.

(From: Abraham - 12/29/00 The Woods Cross TeaM)
Each one has to be willing to give a little, compromise a little, always listen and be heard. You, my children, are each bright lights that can change things for the better. Have not fear. Know that you are valued children, not just to your earthly parents, but to your divine as well.

(From: Janis Joplin)
Don't compromise yourself. You're all you've got.

(From: Will - 8/9/92 – the Talahassee TeaM)
Those who know God and would live the life that He has made possible are faced with the competing and conflicting demands of the material world. Compromise with the material world is inevitable, yet compromise from the path of spiritual progress is impossible. You must each be mindful of the fact that you pass through this life with two minds. You are growing and when you find yourselves in compromising situations, remember that you are becoming increasingly spiritual creatures and you are using this material life experience to become progressively spiritual. It is not the other way around. You are not growing in spiritual strength to become more successful in any material sense.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-34 Section-6)
The Spirit never drives, only leads. If you are a willing learner, if you want to attain spirit levels and reach divine heights, if you sincerely desire to reach the eternal goal, then the divine Spirit will gently and lovingly lead you along the pathway of sonship and spiritual progress. Every step you take must be one of willingness, intelligent and cheerful co-operation. The domination of the Spirit is never tainted with coercion nor compromised by compulsion.

(From: Ham – 7/7/02 – the Nashville TeaM)
Those of you who record these spiritual messages selflessly year after year, those who humbly seek the higher way by becoming students even in advanced age, you are truly creating something that will last beyond your earthly lives and this is because your motivation is selfless. There can be no compromise with evil or potential evil.

The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
If I pray to You to help me learn the gentle Art of Compromise without in any way Compromising my Self and Who You made me to Be… would that mean You would put me into more and more situations where I would of necessity be required to Practice the Perfecting of that Art… like the “Patience” thing? Yeah… I Thought so. -sigh- Oh Well… I guess if I want to Grow Spiritually, You might as well Bring it On, Father.

Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-188 Section-4)
Jesus taught that service to one's fellows is the highest concept of the brotherhood of spirit believers. Salvation should be taken for granted by those who believe in the fatherhood of God. The believer's chief concern should not be the selfish desire for personal salvation but rather the unselfish urge to love and, therefore, serve one's fellows even as Jesus loved and served mortal men.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-193 Section-1)
"Peace be upon you. You rejoice to know that I am the resurrection and the life, but this will avail you nothing unless you are first born of the eternal spirit, thereby coming to possess, by faith, the gift of eternal life. If you are the faith sons of my Father, you shall never die; you shall not perish. The gospel of the kingdom has taught you that all men are the sons of God. And this good news concerning the love of the heavenly Father for his children on earth must be carried to all the world. The time has come when you worship God neither on Gerizim nor at Jerusalem, but where you are, as you are, in spirit and in truth. It is your faith that saves your souls. Salvation is the gift of God to all who believe they are his sons. But be not deceived; while salvation is the free gift of God and is bestowed upon all who accept it by faith, there follows the experience of bearing the fruits of this spirit life as it is lived in the flesh. The acceptance of the doctrine of the fatherhood of God implies that you also freely accept the associated truth of the brotherhood of man. And if man is your brother, he is even more than your neighbor, whom the Father requires you to love as yourself. Your brother, being of your own family, you will not only love with a family affection, but you will also serve as you would serve yourself. And you will thus love and serve your brother because you, being my brethren, have been thus loved and served by me.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Today's Inspiring Sermon is shared with us by our beloved Minister JoiLin. May it touch your Souls as it did mine.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #394, is Direction…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Welcome Beloved to this new day. It is a day I am especially grateful for, as I look in wonder at the up-surging of life all around me… the melting snow, the thawing earth, the budding blossoms beginning to burst forth in myriad colors, the fresh pale green of new leaves as they begin to unfold, and all the earth begins to experience a regeneration, a new birthing… life re-creating itself.

The feeling of rebirth comes from within as well. I find myself not content to simply be, but rather I seem to have a need to DO. Do what, you might ask? Why, to do that which our Father wishes me to do, of course. Ah, that's the rub… just what is it and how are we to discover this direction, this path as it were?

I've been trying to discern his will for me most of my adult life, and have never felt as if I understood, not clearly, at any rate, and even when felt faintly, it's never been very long lived.

But something's different now… this feeling of new energy that keeps welling up from within seems to be staying, for longer periods of time and then coming back again and again, as if urging me to “pay attention” to what I feel. At first I thought it must have to do with the fact that it's Spring… sort of the way we begin to do Spring housecleaning, only this has as much to do with my inner house as with my outer. For you see, I'm feeling guided to change on so many different levels… do you feel it too? Do you feel as I do, as if you're living right on the very edge of discovering something new… something wonderful?

I'm finding I'm praying more, spending more time in being Still and listening… Feeling as if I've been given direction from within that Stillness and later when I come back to everyday awareness, feeling encouraged to remember what I've learned… and to begin to “practice” it.

I studied for a number of years taking training in Kinesiology, numerous healing techniques, including emotional release and brain integration work. I put it all aside because I needed to go to work and make money now… but it seems as if God has another plan for me… I lost my job, and the new one I found is for only three days, leaving two open… for what? I thought I was to find another fill-in job, but suddenly I feel certain that is not God's plan for me.

How do I know this you're asking? Well, in my Still period this morning I was given the understanding that all of the real desires we feel, all of our longings, our dreams of being fulfilled creatively, our desire to serve others… these are all coming from Him… from that part of God that lives within our hearts. It is in giving Life to these ideas that we live a life in alignment with His will for us. I then asked, (in my mind), well, what happens when we feel a desire to do more than one thing, move in more than one direction? How do we know which direction is really His Will for us? And the answer I (heard) was, move in any direction, they are all my will for you… you have been given the greatest gift you could be given, that of free will choice. I only ask that you make a choice, that you breathe life into my wishes for you, by acting.

I can't say for certain that what I felt and heard was truly from God, I can only say that it seemed so to me. It seems like good advice for me to take and so I plan on doing just that. What is your inner voice whispering to you… what decisions are being put in front of you… are you listening?

Be blessed, each of you as you go about your life this week, enjoy the Spring… it's such a beautiful world we live in. Take the time to see it, feel it, smell it, experience it to whatever degree you are able… and know that you too, are a part of it.

With Love,

Minister JoiLin
of The Church Within

Humor of the Week
*****************
Timmy was a little five year old boy who's Mom loved him very much, and being a worrier, she was concerned about him walking to school when he started Kindergarten. She walked him to school the first couple of days, and at the end of the week, he came home from school and told his mother that he did not want her walking him to school everyday. He wanted to be like the "big boys" he protested loudly.

So she had an idea of how to handle it. She asked a neighbor, Mrs. Goodnest, if she would please follow him to school in the mornings, staying at a distance, so he probably wouldn't notice her. Mrs. Goodnest said that since she was up early with her toddler anyway, it would be a good way for them to get some exercise as well, so she agreed. The next school day, Mrs. Goodnest and her little girl, Marcy, set out following behind Timmy as he walked to school with another neighbor boy he knew. She did this for the whole week.

As the boys walked and chatted, kicking stones and twigs, Timmy's little friend noticed the same lady was following them as she seemed to do every day all week. Finally he said to Timmy, "Have you noticed that lady following us to school all week? Do you know her?"

Timmy nonchalantly replied, "Yeah, I know who she is."

The friend said, "Well, who is she?"

"That's just our neighbor, Shirley Goodnest," Timmy replied, "and her daughter Marcy."

"Shirley Goodnest? Who the heck is she and why is she following us?"

"Well," Timmy explained, "Every night my Mom makes me say the 23rd Psalm with my prayers 'cuz she worries about me so much. And in the psalm, it says, 'Shirley Goodnest and Marcy shall follow me all the days of my life,' so I guess I'll just have to get used to it!"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Hopefully within the next couple of weeks, I will have a “Light and Life Sanctuary” Update to share with you. It is appearing as if 2004 will be quite the Fruitful year here!

Today, Minister Jill and I did a “Tag-Team” Service. She did the Humor, the Sermon and the Prayer, and I compiled the Quotes which follow the Sermon.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #395, is “The Joy of Service”.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
A heart-warming and joyous Good Mornin' to you all, my cherished brothers and sisters. Our Father's devoted son in service, Pastor Daniel, has been in “devoted service” to our family's material world needs all day today, so I asked Father if it might be His Will that I do a service for this Sunday, and if so, would He please give me His inspiration. Well… within 30 minutes of that request, I began to have ideas in my head and as they settled into place I realized that the theme underlying them all was “the joy of service” in accordance with Our Father's Will. It seems I was given a multitude of examples in my mind, my thoughts, and my memories that demonstrated the effect that “being in service” has on us.

But first, my thoughts seemed to focus on how demanding our material world is on our psyche. The struggle to survive in our world so often seems to trap us in a sense of overwhelming burden and discouragement—the material man/woman attempting to the best of his or her ability to simply provide for the basics. And it seems to me that the more this becomes the focus, the more we begin to feel helpless and hopeless of ever climbing out of that economic struggle to provide for our families, for ourselves… to be debt free, to have some money in a savings account, to have spending money for a few fun things in life. We have difficulty finding and holding on to our spiritual consciousness and living it. Does that ring a familiar chord with you? Have you been there, done that? Are you still there? Or, perhaps economic struggles have not been your life's challenge, but it matters not. Your challenges have certainly been there, nonetheless, in some other arena of the life experience. Of that I am certain, for no one's life is without personal challenge.

So… what keeps us going? What gives us those uplifting moments that carry us through, over, and ultimately beyond the burdens of daily life?

A most-treasured and beloved friend of mine recently wrote to me and described it perfectly. I hadn't heard from this friend in about 10 years. When I received his letter, it was filled with descriptions of the burdens of the life experience and the discouragement that results from our many challenges…material and personal; burdens that are common to us all. And then, in the middle of the letter, this friend was distracted. And he wrote,

“Time passes…about thirty minutes passed between that last line and now. I am at work and a co-worker came over to ask me about Christian Science, Masons, and other things. He asked questions and I gave answers. Answers based on God's word, on absolute truth. It amazes me how God moves in my life when I least expect it. I really felt down as I was finishing this letter. I have a great deal of pain to deal with. But in just a few minutes, God has lifted my spirits and once again has shown me He is here with me always.”

What changed in my friend's life in that moment? He was in service! Service to a brother. He felt uplifted. Suddenly he became totally unaware of his own sorrows even though he had been fully focused and writing of them for some time. A co-worker needed him! He answered the call. He felt joy in the midst of his sorrows. He forgot his sorrows momentarily. And the greatest blessing of all is that afterwards, he recognized what happened to him in that moment!

Have you had some moments like that in your life? Moments when you have felt really down and God has brought you an opportunity to be in service… and you responded! Were you as fortunate as my friend in recognizing that God was there for you in that moment and it made you realize He is Always with you? That is the ultimate gift of being in service…being able to let go of self-concerns, serve another, and Then to recognize from whence your joy emanates!

Let us all take my friend's experience to heart and build on it. Let us all recognize every possible opportunity to be in service and discover how true it is that God never gives a one-way gift!

And as the “Humor of the Week” so aptly reminds us, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives.”

Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-137 Section-8)
"In my Father's kingdom there shall be neither Jew nor gentile, only those who seek perfection through service, for I declare that he who would be great in my Father's kingdom must first become server of all. If you are willing to serve your fellows, you shall sit down with me in my kingdom, even as, by serving in the similitude of the creature, I shall presently sit down with my Father in his kingdom.
"This new kingdom is like a seed growing in the good soil of a field. It does not attain full fruit quickly. There is an interval of time between the establishment of the kingdom in the soul of man and that hour when the kingdom ripens into the full fruit of everlasting righteousness and eternal salvation.
"And this kingdom which I declare to you is not a reign of power and plenty. The kingdom of heaven is not a matter of meat and drink but rather a life of progressive righteousness and increasing joy in the perfecting service of my Father who is in heaven.

(From: Sir Wilfred Grenfell (1865 - 1940)
Real joy comes not from ease or riches or from the praise of men, but from doing something worthwhile.

(From: Tomas - 12/28/03 The Rio Rancho NM TeaM)
Therefore, flood the environment with truth, beauty and goodness, in whatever manifestation you perceive. For this helps brighten the path and lighten the load of those who carry the delightful burden of the Master, that we lift up our countenance to promote the love of God and the joy of service in all we do.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 25:21)
His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'

(From: Anthony Robbins)
Only those who have learned the power of sincere and selfless contribution experience life's deepest joy: true fulfillment.

No greater joy can I have than this, to hear that my children follow the truth. Beloved, it is a loyal thing you do when you render any service to the brethren, especially to strangers,

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-180 Section-1)
If you would share the Master's joy, you must share his love. And to share his love means that you have shared his service. Such an experience of love does not deliver you from the difficulties of this world; it does not create a new world, but it most certainly does make the old world new.

(From: The RSV Bible - John 15:11-12)
These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
