Americans are the only people in the world known to me whose status anxiety prompts them to advertise their college and university affiliations in the rear window of their automobiles.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

How much does prestige and status affect the way you live your life?

The prestige and status of others…

Your own…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #441, is Prestige/Status/Reputation …

Quotes
*******
(From: Friedrich Nietzsche (1844 - 1900)

The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.

(From: Galileo Galilei (1564 - 1642), The Assayer)
Long experience has taught me this about the status of mankind; with regard to matters requiring thought: the less people know and understand about them, the more positively they attempt to argue concerning them, while on the other hand, to know and understand a multitude of things renders men cautious in passing judgment upon anything new.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-156 Section-5)
The measure of the spiritual capacity of the evolving soul is your faith in truth and your love for man, but the measure of your human strength of character is your ability to resist the holding of grudges and your capacity to withstand brooding in the face of deep sorrow. Defeat is the true mirror in which you may honestly view your real self.

(From: John Ballantine Gough)
A man is what he is, not what men say he is. His character no man can touch. His character is what he is before his God and his Judge; and only he himself can damage that. His reputation is what men say he is. That can be damaged; but reputation is for time, character is for eternity

(From: Richard Bach)
Humanity is not a gift of nature, it is a spiritual achievement to be earned.

(From: Samuel Smiles)
It is possible that the scrupulously honest man may not grow rich so fast as the unscrupulous and dishonest one; but success will be of a truer kind, earned without fraud or injustice. And even though a man should for a time be unsuccessful, still he must be honest; better to lose all and save character. For character is itself a fortune.

(From: Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865)
Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.

(From: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827)
I have never thought of writing for reputation and honor. What I have in my heart must come out; that is the reason why I compose.

(From: Lois McMaster Bujold, "A Civil Campaign", 1999)
Reputation is what other people know about you. Honor is what you know about yourself.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-170 Section-3)
The religion of the kingdom is personal, individual; the fruits, the results, are familial, social. Jesus never failed to exalt the sacredness of the individual as contrasted with the community. But he also recognized that man develops his character by unselfish service; that he unfolds his moral nature in loving relations with his fellows.

(From: Sidney Madwed)
Without relationships, no matter how much wealth, fame, power, prestige and seeming success by the standards and opinions of the world one has, happiness will constantly elude him.

(From: Sri Madhava)
Freedom, then, lies only in our innate human capacity to choose between different sorts of bondage, bondage to desire or self esteem, or bondage to the light that lightens all our lives.

(From: Denis Waitley)
Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.

(A Zen Story)
A farmer got so old that he couldn't work the fields anymore. So he would spend the day just sitting on the porch. His son, still working the farm, would look up from time to time and see his father sitting there. "He's of no use any more," the son thought to himself, "he doesn't do anything!" One day the son got so frustrated by this, that he built a wood coffin, dragged it over to the porch, and told his father to get in. Without saying anything, the father climbed inside. After closing the lid, the son dragged the coffin to the edge of the farm where there was a high cliff. As he approached the drop, he heard a light tapping on the lid from inside the coffin. He opened it up. Still lying there peacefully, the father looked up at his son. "I know you are going to throw me over the cliff, but before you do, may I suggest something?" "What is it?" replied the son. "Throw me over the cliff, if you like," said the father, "but save this good wood coffin. Your children might need to use it."

Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-2)
Jesus portrayed the profound surety of the God-knowing mortal when he said: "To a God-knowing kingdom believer, what does it matter if all things earthly crash?" Temporal securities are vulnerable, but spiritual sureties are impregnable. When the flood tides of human adversity, selfishness, cruelty, hate, malice, and jealousy beat about the mortal soul, you may rest in the assurance that there is one inner bastion, the citadel of the spirit, which is absolutely unassailable; at least this is true of every human being who has dedicated the keeping of his soul to the indwelling spirit of the eternal God.

(From: James Gordon Gilkey)
Most of us think ourselves as standing wearily and helplessly at the center of a circle bristling with tasks, burdens, problems, annoyance, and responsibilities which are rushing in upon us. At every moment we have a dozen different things to do, a dozen problems to solve, a dozen strains to endure. We see ourselves as overdriven, overburdened, overtired. This is a common mental picture and it is totally false. No one of us, however crowded his life, has such an existence. What is the true picture of your life? Imagine that there is an hour glass on your desk. Connecting the bowl at the top with the bowl at the bottom is a tube so thin that only one grain of sand can pass through it at a time. That is the true picture of your life, even on a super busy day, The crowded hours come to you always one moment at a time. That is the only way they can come. The day may bring many tasks, many problems, strains, but invariably they come in single file. You want to gain emotional poise? Remember the hourglass, the grains of sand dropping one by one.

(From: Abraham - 12/8/03 – The Woods Cross TeaM)
You can make effort in the best interest of the whole and allow the results to be Father's. You can control your own levels of frustration and disappointment by changing your perspective on any given situation. Mortal life is the sea and you are with only a small boat. You can only row your own boat. You can only control your own waves or influence in the sea. You can go with the natural current or you can meet with frustration and disappointment fighting the storms alone.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-3)
Human likes and dislikes do not determine good and evil; moral values do not grow out of wish fulfillment or emotional frustration.

(From: Eric Hoffer (1902 - 1983)
He who has nothing and wants something is less frustrated than he who has something and wants more.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-5)
The world is filled with lost souls, not lost in the theologic sense but lost in the directional meaning, wandering about in confusion among the isms and cults of a frustrated philosophic era. Too few have learned how to install a philosophy of living in the place of religious authority. (The symbols of socialized religion are not to be despised as channels of growth, albeit the river bed is not the river.)

(From: Teacher Daniel - 2/4/03– the Rio Rancho NM TeaM)
Life will continue to provide all of you with moments of frustration. The important thing is to learn to let go of the Cause of your frustration. To come to that conclusion which Jesus reached when he said, "What does it matter if kingdoms fall?" All things collapse. You are secure in your relationship to God. You have nothing that can really touch your Soul - your True Inner Reality. It is an ideal which most on this planet have not achieved in their mortal lives.

(From: Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982), Atlas Shrugged)
Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplacable spark. In the hopeless swamps of the not quite, the not yet, and the not at all, do not let the hero in your soul perish and leave only frustration for the life you deserved, but never have been able to reach. The world you desire can be won, it exists, it is real, it is possible, it is yours.

The Sermon
***********
You know what can Really Frustrate me?

Sometimes… just about anything.
and…
Sometimes… absolutely Nothing.

So I asked myself, “Self, what is it that is different in those times?”

When it's “just about anything” it Seems like frustrations are caused by everything and everyone else… doesn't it? “Never by Me…Lord No!”

When it's “absolutely Nothing” it Seems like everything is all of a sudden in Harmony.

Is everything, and everyone else out of Harmony in those, “just about anything” times?
or…
Am I out of Harmony in those times?

Hmmm… That's a Tough one… let me think about it for a while.

So then… after a long period of concentration…

“How in the heck am I going to get everything, and everyone else back into Harmony??”
but perhaps…
“How can I get back into Harmony?”

“HEY! This isn't about Them, it's about ME, Isn't it?”

How many of my frustrations can be diffused or dissolved by a simple change in my Own attitude/expectations/perspective/perception?
or…
Maybe the better question would be, “How many Can't?”

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,

Sometimes it seems like Your Will is not in tune with my will.
or is it that…
My will is not in tune with Yours?
Yeah… I know the correct answer. -sigh-
Help me Father to become more in tune with Your Perfect Will.

Parent,

The Creator's Infinite Love to all of You,

Sally was driving home from one of her business trips in Northern Arizona when she saw an elderly Navajo woman walking on the side of the road.

As the trip was a long and quiet one, she stopped the car and asked the Navajo woman if she would like a ride.

With a silent nod of thanks, the woman got into the car. Resuming the journey, Sally tried in vain to make a bit of small talk with the Navajo woman. The old woman just sat silently, looking intently at everything she saw, studying every little detail, until she noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Sally.

"What's in the bag?" asked the old woman.

Sally looked down at the brown bag and said, "It's a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband."

The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two. Then speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said, "Good trade."

Quotes

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-3)
Religion is not a technique for attaining a static and blissful peace of mind; it is an impulse for organizing the soul for dynamic service. It is the enlistment of the totality of selfhood in the loyal service of loving God and serving man.

(From: Marian Wright Edelman)
Service is the “rent” we pay for Being. It is the very Purpose of Life, and not something you do in your spare time.

(From: Ham – 9/13/98– the Nashville TeaM)
You can elevate the drudgery of any task by viewing it correctly as a sacred duty of service that you have been privileged to receive.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-180 Section-1)
The consciousness of sacrifice implies the absence of that wholehearted affection which would have made such a loving service a supreme joy. The idea of duty signifies that you are servant-minded and hence are missing the mighty thrill of doing your service as a friend and for a friend. The impulse of friendship transcends all convictions of duty, and the service of a friend for a friend can never be called a sacrifice.

(From: Teacher Daniel – 12/1/95 – the SE Idaho TeaM)
What does matter is that whatever service rendered is rendered in the spirit of love, willingness, and wholeheartedness. Those who serve begrudgingly or out of guilt or pressure from the outside are cheating themselves for they are not receiving the wondrous joy that is internally gained through service.

(From: Elbert Hubbard (1856 - 1915)
Men are rich only as they give. He who gives great service gets great rewards.

(From: The RSV Bible - Galatians 5:13-14)
For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants of one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

(From: Abraham - 2/17/02 – The Woods Cross TeaM)
We need not to serve out of spiritual obligation, no. We need to serve because that is the energy that moves life. Service is the act and love is the consequence. We become more humbled in true service, not exalted because we show ourselves to be good and highly worthy of our fellows praise. Service becomes an honor--not a duty. It becomes a feeling that you stand side-by-side working with Father.

(From: Oprah Winfrey)
I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.

(From: Cesar E. Chavez)
The end of all education should surely be service to others.

(From: The RSV Bible - Mark 9:35)
"If any one would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all."

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #444, is Illusion and/or/versus Illumination…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-196 Section-3)
In the realm of religious experience, spiritual possibility is potential reality. Man's forward spiritual urge is not a psychic illusion. All of man's universe romancing may not be fact, but much, very much, is truth.

(From: Daniel J. Boorstin (1914- )
The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance - it is the illusion of knowledge.

(From: Grant Frazier)
Life is full of obstacle illusions.

(From: Saul Bellow (1915 - )
A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-160 Section-1)
Successful living is nothing more or less than the art of the mastery of dependable techniques for solving common problems. The first step in the solution of any problem is to locate the difficulty, to isolate the problem, and frankly to recognize its nature and gravity. The great mistake is that, when life problems excite our profound fears, we refuse to recognize them. Likewise, when the acknowledgment of our difficulties entails the reduction of our long-cherished conceit, the admission of envy, or the abandonment of deep-seated prejudices, the average person prefers to cling to the old illusions of safety and to the long-cherished false feelings of security. Only a brave person is willing honestly to admit, and fearlessly to face, what a sincere and logical mind discovers.

(From: Caius Petronius, Roman Consul, 66 A.D.)
I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganising: and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress, while producing confusion, inefficiency and demoralisation.

(From: Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)
People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.

(From: Martin Luther King)
Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-196 Section-5)
Personal, spiritual religious experience is an efficient solvent for most mortal difficulties; it is an effective sorter, evaluator, and adjuster of all human problems. Religion does not remove or destroy human troubles, but it does dissolve, absorb, illuminate, and transcend them. True religion unifies the personality for effective adjustment to all mortal requirements.

(From: Timothy – (mid-90's) – the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene TeaM)
The recognition and understanding of the love of God is the starting point for any spiritual ministry. Children are most precious and adorable when they are expressing themselves from total realness and pure innocence. Be as a child in your devotion and in your ministry, simply as one who spontaneously reflects and illuminates the love of God. There is nothing more precious than to see and experience this in others and it is so in your spontaneous expressions of your own recognition in your own personal experience of life.

(From: Elyon - 12/7/97– the North Idaho TeaM)
You each have a perspective, a viewpoint, that can help illuminate the dark corners for another. If all perspectives were laid out, there would be no more dark corners to illuminate, as the total truth would be in full light.

(From: Veronica – 9/26/94 – the Volcano, Hawaii TeaM)
Beauty continually unfolds around you in captivating loveliness, and a new dimension will penetrate your consciousness as you advance in perfection. It thrives in proportion to your ascension and begins to illuminate with intensity as you achieve increased skill in the perception of spirit.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
It is Very difficult for human beings to voluntarily let go of a long cherished Illusion…

Most especially is this so when the Illusion has served so admirably as the scaffolding for a profound and personal Spiritual Illumination.

Though the “scaffolding” may indeed be of significant importance to it's construction, it is not a part of the finished structure, and must be removed when it has outgrown it's usefulness.

Red is grey and yellow white
We decide which is right
and which is an illusion.
(From: Moody Blues, "Tuesday Afternoon")

Dear God,
