I recently attended a small business marketing seminar at which the speaker used actual examples to reinforce her teaching points.

She told a delightful story about a Coffee shop that distinguished itself from the competition by prominently displaying a warning sign that read: "Unattended children will be given a double espresso and a free puppy!"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

I've done a number of Sunday Services on “advice” in the past, but this time I thought I'd do it on…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #493, is “Guidance…

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #65)
When they think that they know the answers,
people are difficult to guide.
When they know that they don't know,
people can find their own way.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-34 Section-6)
The Spirit never drives, only leads. If you are a willing learner, if you want to attain spirit levels and reach divine heights, if you sincerely desire to reach the eternal goal, then the divine Spirit will gently and lovingly lead you along the pathway of sonship and spiritual progress. Every step you take must be one of willingness, intelligent and cheerful co-operation. The domination of the Spirit is never tainted with coercion nor compromised by compulsion.
And when such a life of spirit guidance is freely and intelligently accepted, there gradually develops within the human mind a positive consciousness of divine contact and assurance of spirit communion; sooner or later "the Spirit bears witness with your spirit (the Adjuster) that you are a child of God."

(From: Buddha (563 BC - 483 BC)
Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue.

(From: Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC)
There is no being of any race who, if he finds the proper guide, cannot attain to virtue.

(From: Sidney Madwed )
Everyone is in business for himself, for he is selling his services, labor or ideas. Until one realizes that this is true he will not take conscious charge of his life and will always be looking outside himself for guidance.

(From: Jane Austen (1775 - 1817), Mansfield Park )
We have all a better guide in ourselves, if we would attend to it, than any other person can be.

(From: T. T. Munger)
What I am actually saying is that we need to be willing to let our intuition guide us, and then be willing to follow that guidance directly and fearlessly.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-146 Section-3)
“While you cannot observe the divine spirit at work in your minds, there is a practical method of discovering the degree to which you have yielded the control of your soul powers to the teaching and guidance of this indwelling spirit of the heavenly Father, and that is the degree of your love for your fellow men. This spirit of the Father partakes of the love of the Father, and as it dominates man, it unfailingly leads in the directions of divine worship and loving regard for one's fellows.

(From: Shakti Gawain)
Every time you don't follow your inner guidance, you feel a loss of energy, loss of power, a sense of spiritual deadness.

(From: Carl Schurz (1829 - 1906)
Ideals are like stars: you will not succeed in touching them with your hands, but like the seafaring man on the ocean desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them, you reach your destiny.

(From: The RSV Bible - Revelation 7:17)
For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

(From: Elyon - 1/18/04 – The North Idaho TeaM)
It is inherent in personality makeup to desire to receive guidance and support from one another. This allows individuals extra energies to pursue the unknown, to experience a greater sphere of functioning that is otherwise unattainable in isolation. Teamwork provides such an arena wherein talents are overlaid one with another's to develop a progression of spiritual growth.

(From: The Land Before Time)
Let your heart guide you. It whispers, so listen closely.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Papers - Paper-142 Section-62)
Jesus answered: "Already does the spirit of the Father in heaven indwell you. If you would be led by this spirit from above, very soon would you begin to see with the eyes of the spirit, and then by the wholehearted choice of spirit guidance would you be born of the spirit since your only purpose in living would be to do the will of your Father who is in heaven. And so finding yourself born of the spirit and happily in the kingdom of God, you would begin to bear in your daily life the abundant fruits of the spirit."

(From: Elyon - 6/27/04– the North Idaho TeaM)
While a leader may appear to head the pack to those who follow, within an honest leader is the understanding of divine guidance. A leader is one who takes initiative but is also one who receives guidance and correction and instruction.

The Sermon
***********
You know? I've always wondered about something… (well… maybe not always, but I Have wondered on a fair number of occasions. ;-) …when is it “advice” and when is it “Guidance”? Or on the flip side of that… when is it really “Guidance” and when is it purely “advice”?

[Yes, yes… I know. I Do wonder about some rather, peculiar musings from time to time…]
But if you think about it, “advice” and “Guidance” Do have one or two discernable commonalities.

One example… they are both something that people sincerely Seek. Often people seek “Guidance” and, somewhat less frequently they even seek “advice”. It's Great when you seek Guidance and receive Guidance. And it is even Excellent when you seek advice and in return receive Guidance. Of course… when you are truly seeking Guidance and instead receive advice, that's Not nearly so welcome of an exchange, Is it?

Good advice is sometimes actually Guidance… but Good Guidance is almost Never advice.

Good advice is quite Welcome at the appropriate moments (like in those moments that it is actually asked for), but when it is received Un-asked-for, I can't think of too many things less appreciated (except… chronic pain and a long term itchy rash maybe… ;-).

Good Guidance is Always Welcome if indeed it is Genuine Guidance and not advice trying to be disguised as Guidance. The real difference as I see it is that, advice attempts to “give an answer” whereas Guidance, “Guides” one into figuring out or finding the answer for themselves. Advice “tells” while Guidance “shows”.

When I ask for advice, it's usually because I want to know what the other person would do in a similar situation because what I've been trying hasn't seemed to work very well. I may take the advice or not, depending upon my state of mind at the time. If I ask for it, I will at least take it into consideration. Asking for advice doesn't necessarily equate with my wanting to learn something different. But my asking for Guidance is pretty much Always about my learning of something New and finding a Better Way.

Let me, if you will, give you an illustration of what I'm attempting to portray here today by telling you of a significant personal experience of mine where I asked for “advice” but instead received “Guidance”…

Back in 1986 I discovered rather “accidentally” that I was a relatively good Wood Carver. My first piece was a 5'2” Cigar Store Indian that many described as a Sculpture rather than merely a carving. I had carved it out of the trunk of a tree that I had, and in the process had learned about flowing with and following the Guidance of “The Creative Source” by letting go of the ego and allowing the “Source” to work Through me.

At the completion of this project of love, I followed the suggestion of a few friends and showed it to an acknowledged and acclaimed Master Wood Sculptor in the local San Diego area. He seemed relatively impressed with my first attempt at any real carving, but mostly with the Hands of the “Indian” and, asked me if I would like to attend his Wood Carving Classes for free for a while. His weekly classes were usually pretty expensive (at least for my income), and so I thankfully agreed to join him and his other students the following week.

I didn't have anything to carve on for the class, so for the next few days before the class was to take place, I feverishly started chipping away at a 2' section of a Pear tree that I had picked up and, using what I had learned during my previous carving experience---let go and let it flow---I had made what I thought was pretty good progress on “the boy” by the time I was due to go to the class.

[OK… so that part was the background info, now this next is the “advice”/”Guidance” part I was initially referring to…]

I showed up at the class and Clay (the Master Carver), introduced me to his other pupils and showed me where I could sit and work on my new piece. I asked Clay for advice on what he thought I should do next with my carving. He said I should just keep doing what I had started doing until he thought I needed some help with it. Then he went over to his other students one at a time and gave them specific Guidance on what they should be doing with their carvings. I “got into” my work and was moving along well when Clay got back to me and just stood watching me for a minute before he silently moved on to his other students again. I was a little disappointed that he hadn't shown me anything or made any comments, but I figured, I hadn't paid for the class, so I just kept carving. This same scenario repeated itself a few more times and when everyone seemed to be comfortable with what they were doing, Clay sat down and continued working on a Sculpture of his own.

I really wanted his “advice” but he wasn't offering. He kept telling me, “Just keep doing what you're doing.” I wasn't “Stuck” on anything at the moment and there was plenty cutting that I could see to do yet, so I guess I really didn't Need his advice at the time. “Oh well…” and I flowed back into my work. About an hour later I realized that I hadn't really been conscious of anything else but my work. A Lot of Chips had flown and “The Boy” was starting to look pretty good to me. It was obviously far from done, but turning it over and around in my hands, I really Was at a loss about what to do next. Something about it didn't quite “feel” right, but I couldn't figure out what it was or how to remedy it. I needed to stretch anyway, so I took it over to where Clay was carving to show him my progress and ask for his advice on where to go with it. Instead of telling me anything, Clay held it out at arms length and studied it while I watched. He silently turned it with one hand and held his other hand up to it in various positions covering portions of wood that were still attached. All of a sudden, I recognized that what his hand wasn't covering in the moment looked like what I thought it Should look like. “OH!! There It Is!!!” I exclaimed, “I know what to do next!” What Clay's hand had been covering I realized, was wood that needed to be removed yet to “move on”. He handed me back the piece with a smile and I returned to my area and continued working and cutting… holding my hand up against it when I had questions or doubts, the way Clay had… cutting and working, oblivious to anything or anyone else for the next few hours until I was informed that class was ending.

I put away my tools and cleaned up my mess, then assessed my progress for the evening. I was thoroughly satisfied with what I had accomplished and what I had learned from Clay that evening.

I had asked him for “advice” and instead, he gave me “Guidance”.

Do you ever ask for “advice” when what you are really seeking is “Guidance”?

Do you ever expect God to do something For you rather than to show you how to do it for yourself?

The Prayer for Guidance is always one assured of an answer.

Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-179 Section-3)
“If, then, the Master has washed your feet, why was it that you were unwilling to wash one another's feet? What lesson should you learn from this parable in which the Master so willingly does that service which his brethren were unwilling to do for one another?”

(From: George Lucas (1944 - )
The hero is going down the road and meets this poor and insignificant person. The goal or lesson is for the hero to learn to respect everybody and to pay attention to the poorest person because that's where the key to his success will be.

(From: James M. Barrie (1860 - 1937)
Life is a long lesson in humility.

(From: Peter McWilliams, Life 101 )
If our early lessons of acceptance were as successful as our early lessons of anger, how much happier we would all be.

(From: The Book of Runes - #11)
You fall short in your efforts, you reach out and miss, you watch helplessly while what you've gained dwindles away. Observe what is happening. Examine these events from an open perspective and ask, “What lesson do I need to learn from this in my life?”

(From: Vernon Sanders Law)
Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards.

(From: The Book of Runes - #19)
The more severe the disruption in your life, the more significant and timely the requirements for your growth.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-3)
Man cannot cause growth, but he can supply favorable conditions. Growth is always unconscious, be it physical, intellectual, or spiritual. Love thus grows; it cannot be created, manufactured, or purchased; it must grow. Evolution is a cosmic technique of growth. Social growth cannot be secured by legislation, and moral growth is not had by improved administration. Man may manufacture a machine, but its real value must be derived from human culture and personal appreciation. Man's sole contribution to growth is the mobilization of the total powers of his personality--living faith.

(From: George Washington (1732 - 1799)
We ought not to look back unless it is to derive useful lessons from past errors, and for the purpose of profiting by dear-brought experience.

(From: Hugh White (1773 - 1840)
When you make a mistake, don't look back at it long. Take the reason of the thing into your mind and then look forward. Mistakes are lessons of wisdom. The past cannot be changed. The future is yet in your power.

(From: John Burroughs (1837 - 1921)
The lesson which life repeats and constantly enforces is 'look under foot.' You are always nearer the divine and the true sources of your power than you think.

(From: AhmaNiden 8/6/05 – the Denver TeaM)
There are many thirsty souls who yearn for a deeper connection to God, they yearn for personal lessons through which they can learn and grow.

(From: Gene Oliver)

When the student is ready. . . the lesson appears.

(From: Malvantra - 10/19/97 – The North Idaho TeaM)
You are all in a very important area of your own personal growth which is focused at this time on the discovery and acceptance of your individual identity. This is not an easy time for mortals, yet it is a grand opportunity for each of you to participate in the redefinition of who you truly are.

(From: Henry Miller (1891 - 1980), The Books in My Life )
In this age, which believes that there is a short cut to everything, the greatest lesson to be learned is that the most difficult way is, in the long run, the easiest.

(From: Elyon - 4/5/98 – The North Idaho TeaM)
It is difficult during times of challenge to feel the sense of fraternity when it is perceived by your senses that you are estranged from others, for you are grappling with personal lessons which appear un-manifested in the actions of others. This is an important time for you to pursue the inner belonging with the Father, that 'purr' of perfection within. It is also important to pursue counsel, feedback from your fellows, to eliminate isolation; that solitary trek through your difficulties is unnecessary. Lessons are learned only by yourself. However, the many helpers about you are always ready to provide guidance, and even when guidance is not available, support is.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-48 Section-6)
Even now you should learn to water the garden of your heart as well as to seek for the dry sands of knowledge. Forms are valueless when lessons are learned. No chick may be had without the shell, and no shell is of any worth after the chick is hatched.

(From: Erykah Badu, A line from the song "On & On" )
Peace and blessings manifest with every lesson learned - and if your knowledge were your wealth then it would be well earned.

The Sermon
***********
PGL's---Personal Growth Lessons

No man, woman or child of any race, economic status, or system of belief can avoid them (though many may try).

PGL's are one thing that All human beings share in common.
PGL's are as unavoidable as thinking.

Personal Growth Lessons are an Essential part of life… perchance even the entire Reason for this mortal life we live. From the earliest days of personality consciousness unto our last dying breath on this “Nursery School” we call Earth, we are given opportunities to learn and to grow… to practice and to mature… to experience and to develop wisdom… to feel and to Love.

When, where and how we each go about the learning of our own PGL's is as variable, unique and individual as are the environment and the circumstances of life. And yet, the core Lessons themselves are fundamental, elemental, universal to all. They can be learned the hard way, or the easy way… irrelevant really, as long as they are learned eventually. A PGL learned, is a PGL that has been experientially earned.

Many, if not all Personal Growth Lessons must be learned over and over, again and again. Not in a repetitive way (though so it may often seem), but rather in new and untested ways. Just because “I Got It” once or twice does not mean that I have mastered the entirety of the lesson. Some PGL's will likely take the better part of Eternity to fully unfold.

One of the most amusing things I hear people say about a Personal Growth Lesson (amusing only because I have repeatedly fallen prey to the tendency myself over the years) is, “Oh, I've already Learned That lesson!” The PGL I'm learning about That statement is, that no matter how significant and apparently all-encompassing and how utterly life changing an individual instance of Personal Growth may seem, other instances or different circumstances may likely require additional understanding and evolved perspectives in order to apply the Lesson without serious effort. The effort required may be so intense as to cause a kernel of doubt as to whether or not I ever really even “Got It” at all. Then I remind myself that, just because I've learned Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division does not mean that I have mastered Mathematics… nor, just because I do not yet comprehend advanced calculus does it mean that I never really learned Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.

Some would declare “The Only way to learn 'this' Lesson is the way 'I' learned it.” …when in Truth it may be simply the only way that in fact, “They” were able to learn it. I may have learned it in an entirely different manner with entirely different inspirations, and You likely learned it in ways totally dissimilar to my own. Do you think that God really cares more for which “ism” aids us in truly learning a Personal Growth Lesson that He/She has set for us… than that we actually Learn the Lesson? Is the Method more important than the Lesson Learned? Is the Scaffolding more important than the Building created therefrom?

Of One thing am I Certain. God will provide as Many opportunities for a person to learn a Vital Lesson as that person requires to fully learn it. If through no deliberate fault of their own they merely fail to learn it “this time”, then other equivalent opportunities will doubtless be forthcoming. If the learning of a PGL is missed through procrastination or refusal to learn however, subsequent opportunities will prove to be progressively more and more uncomfortable (even unto the depths of near total despair in extreme cases), until the lesson is finally embraced and attended to.

Embrace your PGL's. They are not punishments, they are Gifts. They need not be frightening and limiting. Just as easily they can be Exciting and Fulfilling depending upon your perspective and attitude.

Personal Growth Lessons---PGL's---ya' gotta Love 'em!

…but then, it's All about Love. Isn't it?

GWG!

Resurrection isn't so much about “coming back from the dead,” I think…

As it is…

About the Continuance… the Revitalization… the Transformation… the Renewal of Life…

…after what only Looked, like death.

Anything in your life feel like it could use some Resurrection?

"Peace be upon you. You rejoice to know that I am the resurrection and the life, but this will avail you nothing unless you are first born of the eternal spirit, thereby coming to possess, by faith, the gift of eternal life. If you are the faith sons of my Father, you shall never die; you shall not perish. The gospel of the kingdom has taught you that all men are the sons of God. And this good news concerning the love of the heavenly Father for his children on earth must be carried to all the world. The time has come when you worship God neither on Gerizim nor at Jerusalem, but where you are, as you are, in spirit and in truth. It is your faith that saves your souls. Salvation is the gift of God to all who believe they are his sons.

Two little kids are in a hospital, lying on stretchers next to each other outside the operating room.

The first kid leans over and asks, "What are you in here for?"

The second kid says, "I'm in here to get my tonsils out and I'm a little nervous."

The first kid says, "You've got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up they give you lots of Jell-O and ice cream. It's a breeze."

The second kid then asks, "What are you here for?"

The first kid says, "A circumcision."

'Whoa!", the second kid replies. "Good luck buddy. I had that done when I was born. Couldn't walk for a year.”

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

With Spring beginning to emerge up here in the Northern Hemisphere I thought…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #496, is Renewal…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
I was wondering…

Is there a part of me that needs Renewal right now?

But then I pondered further…
Is there truly a part of me that does Not need Renewal right now?

Is not continuous Renewal the only truly Healthy way of Life?

The cells in our bodies must Constantly Renew themselves or our bodies would rapidly deteriorate. Would it not be logical and reasonable to expect that so also our minds, our Souls, and our Spirits must Constantly Renew Themselves lest they whither, wane and weaken?

It was while observing the new spring Growth around our “Faith Garden” this morning… the abundance of new leaves emerging from the Raspberries and Apple trees; the profusion of new Buds on the Peaches and Apricots and Pears and Cherries; the wealth of extra Daffodils… that I got to thinking about the word Renewal. Renewal must be so much More than just staying alive. Renewal implies Growth as well… something more, something better than what was before… something more Productive, more Vital, more Fruitful than in the past, than yesterday.

Anyway… that is how today's topic came about.

I can honestly say that I'M 'bout due for some serious Renewal…

How about You?

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-160 Section-2)
Isolation tends to exhaust the energy charge of the soul. Association with one's fellows is essential to the renewal of the zest for life and is indispensable to the maintenance of the courage to fight those battles consequent upon the ascent to the higher levels of human living. Friendship enhances the joys and glorifies the triumphs of life. Loving and intimate human associations tend to rob suffering of its sorrow and hardship of much of its bitterness. The presence of a friend enhances all beauty and exalts every goodness. By intelligent symbols man is able to quicken and enlarge the appreciative capacities of his friends. One of the crowning glories of human friendship is this power and possibility of the mutual stimulation of the imagination. Great spiritual power is inherent in the consciousness of wholehearted devotion to a common cause, mutual loyalty to a cosmic Deity.

(From: Shana Alexander)
We strain to renew our capacity for wonder, to shock ourselves into astonishment once again.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #39)
In harmony with the Tao,
the sky is clear and spacious,
the earth is solid and full,
all creature flourish together,
content with the way they are,
endlessly repeating themselves,
endlessly renewed.

(From: Wendell Berry )
To cherish what remains of the Earth and to foster its renewal is our only legitimate hope of survival.

(From: Audrey Hepburn)
People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-147 Section-8)
Is not this the fast I should choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the knots of heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share my bread with the hungry and to bring those who are homeless and poor to my house? And when I see those who are naked, I will clothe them.
"`Then shall your light break forth as the morning while your health springs forth speedily. Your righteousness shall go before you while the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then will you call upon the Lord, and he shall answer; you will cry out, and he shall say--Here am I. And all this he will do if you refrain from oppression, condemnation, and vanity. The Father rather desires that you draw out your heart to the hungry, and that you minister to the afflicted souls; then shall your light shine in obscurity, and even your darkness shall be as the noonday. Then shall the Lord guide you continually, satisfying your soul and renewing your strength. You shall become like a watered garden, like a spring whose waters fail not. And they who do these things shall restore the wasted glories; they shall raise up the foundations of many generations; they shall be called the rebuilders of broken walls, the restorers of safe paths in which to dwell.'"

(From: Deepak Chopra, The Path to Love)
The spiritual meaning of love is measured by what it can do. Love is meant to heal. Love is meant to renew. Love is meant to bring us closer to God.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-156 Section-5)
Believers must increasingly learn how to step aside from the rush of life--escape the harassments of material existence--while they refresh the soul, inspire the mind, and renew the spirit by worshipful communion.

(From: Pearl Buck (1892 - 1973)
Inside myself is a place where I live all alone and that's where you renew your springs that never dry up.

(From: Susan Taylor)

We need quiet time to examine our lives openly and honestly. . . spending quiet time alone gives your mind an opportunity to renew itself and create order.

(From: Aaron - 1/8/06– the S.E. Idaho TeaM)
Renewal can be seen as the process of not only re-subscribing to what you hold dear but also bringing in those things which characterize who you would like to be in eternity.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-108 Section-6)
A great teacher once admonished men that they should be renewed in the spirit of their minds; that they become new men who, like God, are created in righteousness and in the completion of truth.

(From: Abraham 11/18/96 – the Woods Cross TeaM)
To serve takes much energy from the Spirit, from your spirit, from your soul. To daily recognize your Father's hand in your life brings about a renewal within your soul and mind. Your recognition of His loving attributes is to know God and desire to be like Him, to acquire His loving attributes, to produce the fruits of the Spirit. Is our Father not kind, patient, forgiving, loving, forbearing, enduring, peaceful, confident and joyful? I say with authority these fruits are your birthright. They are attainable.

(From: Lao-tzu (604 BC - 531 BC), The Way of Lao-tzu )
To be worn out is to be renewed.

(From: Abraham 3/31/02 – the Woods Cross TeaM)
As we allow this purification, this renewal, we are again becoming as little children, open to adventure, curious and enthusiastic about life to come.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Papers - Paper-143 Section-2)
"By the old way you seek to suppress, obey, and conform to the rules of living; by the new way you are first transformed by the Spirit of Truth and thereby strengthened in your inner soul by the constant spiritual renewing of your mind, and so are you endowed with the power of the certain and joyous performance of the gracious, acceptable, and perfect will of God. Forget not--it is your personal faith in the exceedingly great and precious promises of God that ensures your becoming partakers of the divine nature. Thus by your faith and the spirit's transformation, you become in reality the temples of God, and his spirit actually dwells within you. If, then, the spirit dwells within you, you are no longer bondslaves of the flesh but free and liberated sons of the spirit. The new law of the spirit endows you with the liberty of self-mastery in place of the old law of the fear of self-bondage and the slavery of self-denial.

(From: The RSV Bible - Ephesians 4:23-24)
and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 12:2)
Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

(From: Teacher Daniel - 3/22/92– the S.E. Idaho TeaM)
Spring is symbolic in many ways. It is the time of rebirth, renewal. And so look into your lives and make this a Spring worth remembering for you; the time when you chose to be totally renewed in God's love, God's Spirit, to be formed of His Will and not yours. Let the sprouting shoots of Spring become part of you. Let the roots grow deep and the beautiful foliage, flowers, and fragrance be seen on the outside by others, always remembering that it takes the inner work to produce the outer.

(From: The KJV Bible - Psalm 51:10)
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Humor of the Week
*****************
A woman went to the doctor's office where she was seen by one of the younger doctors.  After about four minutes in the examination room, she burst out, screaming as she ran down the hall.  An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was and she told him her story.

After listening, he had her sit down and relax in another room.  The older doctor marched down the hallway to the back where the young doctor was writing on his clipboard.  "What's the matter with you?" the older doctor demanded.  "Mrs. Reid is 62 years old, has four grown children and seven grandchildren and you told her she was pregnant?"

The younger doctor continued writing and without looking up said, "Does she still have the hiccups?"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

The world we live in Sure does seem to follow the ol' “Two Steps Forward, One step Back” thing, doesn't it?

I don't know about you, but I'm sure ready to start taking the first of those “Two Steps Forward” again. Aren't you?

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #497, is “In this world, but not Of it”…

Quotes
*******
(From: The RSV Bible - John 1:10-13)
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

(From: Alexander Solzhenitsyn )
We have placed too much hope in political and social reforms, only to find out that we were being deprived of our most precious possession: our spiritual life.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-140 Section-3)
It is not enough that you live as you were before this hour, but henceforth must you live as those who have tasted the glories of a better life and have been sent back to earth as ambassadors of the Sovereign of that new and better world. Of the teacher more is expected than of the pupil; of the master more is exacted than of the servant. Of the citizens of the heavenly kingdom more is required than of the citizens of the earthly rule.

(From: The ASB Bible - John 15:19)
"If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.

(From: The ASB Bible - John 17:14)
"I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

(From: The RSV Bible - Mark 4:19)
but the cares of the world, and the delight in riches, and the desire for other things, enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

(From: The KJV Bible - Luke 12:30-32)
For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

(From: Woodrow Wilson (1856 - 1924)
You are not here merely to make a living. You are here to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, and with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world. You impoverish yourself if you forget this errand.

(From: George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950)
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-180 Section-3)
“If you were of this world, then would the world love its own, but because you are not, the world refuses to love you. You are in this world, but your lives are not to be worldlike. I have chosen you out of the world to represent the spirit of another world even to this world from which you have been chosen.

(From: Stephen Covey)
We are not human beings on a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings on a human journey.

(From: The RSV Bible - Luke 9:25)
For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?

(From: William Henry Channing )
To live content with small means, to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion, to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich, to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly, to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart, to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never, in a word to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common, this is to be my symphony.

(From: Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809 - 1894)
The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.

(From: Albert Schweitzer (1875 - 1965)
Reverence for life brings us into a spiritual relation with the world which is independent of all knowledge of the universe.

(From: Og Mandino )
Realize that true happiness lies within you. Waste no time and effort searching for peace and contentment and joy in the world outside. Remember that there is no happiness in having or in getting, but only in giving. Reach out. Share. Smile. Hug. Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.

(From: The RSV Bible - John 14:27)
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

The Sermon
***********
I don't know about you, but I'm sometimes pretty disheartened by the state of the world these past six years or so.

During the 90's it really seemed like the consciousness of the world was growing towards Love and Peace and Acceptance, like we as a Civilization were finally beginning to Mature after So Long being entrenched in a barbarism of “might makes right”. You felt it didn't you? The turning of the second millennium AD looked like it would certainly be promising and hopeful.

And then… all of a sudden… we find ourselves forced back under the controlling mindset that prevailed a half century, and more, ago… the majority controlled and manipulated by fear (real or artificial). The only difference is back then, we didn't know any better… we were in the process of learning it. What excuse do we have today? Do we not know better today? Apparently, there is a higher percentage yet of those who do not, than of those who do. But it Has to be Close, doesn't it? Will this present term of retrogression be enough of a hardship… enough of an example of the futility of bygone methods… will it cause enough righteous indignation in the people to tip the scales back onto the side of Peace and Love and Acceptance… toward The Brotherhood of Man?

Lord I hope so.

So…
I've been wrestling with this, and with all that has resulted in the world because of it, and I wondered… “How is it that I was so easily sucked back into it all?”

And I heard…
“Because you have forgotten how to be In the world but not Of it.”

“Ah! Of Course!”
(Did I really know that once?)

“You've experienced it before. You know the truth of it.”

“Yes… I remember! It was Exquisite! Changing for the better those things that I could, and letting go of those things that I could not. Doing my best and leaving the consequences to You.” (Where did I lose it… Why did I lose it?)

“You did not lose it. Indeed this is but a different and more challenging opportunity to use it again and for it to become more an experiential part of your true self. Your body is indeed of this world, and in this body you must exist and survive in the physical world. But You, my child, are of Me.”

“Oh, yeah. That's right. I guess I forgot about that part.”
(So, if I just do as Much as I can the Best that I can and let You take care of the outworkings of the Big Picture I'll get through this?)

“Indeed. Did you think you would not?”

“So… this too shall pass?”
(And then I didn't actually See a smile, but I sure Felt one.)
