There was a tradesman, a painter called Wayne, who was very interested in making a penny where he could, so he often would thin down paint to make it go a wee bit further. As it happened, he got away with this for some time, but eventually the Church decided to do a big restoration job on the painting of one of their biggest buildings.
Wayne put in a bid, and because his price was so low, he got the job. And so he set to erecting the trestles and setting up the planks, and buying the paint and, yes, I am sorry to say, thinning it down with turpentine.
Well, Wayne was up on the scaffolding, painting away, the job nearly completed when suddenly there was a horrendous clap of thunder, and the sky opened, the rain poured down, washing the thinned paint from all over the church and knocking Wayne clear off the scaffold to land on the lawn among the gravestones, surrounded by telltale puddles of the thinned and useless paint.
Wayne was no fool! He knew this was a judgment from the Almighty, so he got on is knees and cried: "Oh, God! Forgive me! What should I do?"
And from the thunder, a mighty voice spoke.

"Repaint! Repaint! …and thin no more!"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

This has been somewhat of a Horrendous week for me… Ever since last Sunday, I have been almost continually dealing with the complexities of moving my churchwithin.org Web-Site and Domain management and e-mail accounts for the Church Within from one Web-Host to a New one. From last Saturday through Thursday, we had no usable e-mail and the web-site was unavailable except for a “stock” under construction page. This may not seem all that crucial to most, but the Church Within web-site usually gets from 20 to over 50 hits per day and that's more than a couple hundred visitors. After numerous calls to Seattle for technical assistance and trial and error… all with a phone line that is so old I'm lucky if I can get a 14.4kbps connection that drops me in the middle of things… I am done, but a bit rattled.

Add to that that my Beloved Wife Jill slipped on a wet rock last Sunday and so badly bruised her hip and ribs that she can barely get around the house without excruciating pain… a Loved One's Pain sure does exhaust the Heart and Soul, doesn't it?

With all of the Complexities of Life on such a planet as this, I've been moved to decide that…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #409, will be Simplicity…

Quotes
*******
(From: Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862)

To be a philosopher is not merely to have subtle thoughts, not even to found a school, but so to love wisdom as to live according to its dictates, a life of simplicity, independence, magnanimity, and trust.

(From: Alexander Pope (1688 - 1744)
There is a certain majesty in simplicity which is far above all the quaintness of wit.

(From: Henry Miller (1891 - 1980)
Living apart and at peace with myself, I came to realize more vividly the meaning of the doctrine of acceptance. To refrain from giving advice, to refrain from meddling in the affairs of others, to refrain, even though the motives be the highest, from tampering with another's way of life - so simple, yet so difficult for an active spirit. Hands off!

(From: Abraham - 1/15/95 www.tmarchives.com)
A challenge of human life is to find the unity and simplicity that comes with God, to discover that differences do not matter. Uniqueness is to be celebrated for each of you are indeed one, and indeed one with God, and indeed a part of God. The giving of love must be learned, so too the receiving.

(From: Jesus - The Urantia Papers - Paper-155 Section-6)
“Many of your brethren have minds which accept the theory of God while they spiritually fail to realize the presence of God. And that is just the reason why I have so often taught you that the kingdom of heaven can best be realized by acquiring the spiritual attitude of a sincere child. It is not the mental immaturity of the child that I commend to you but rather the spiritual simplicity of such an easy-believing and fully-trusting little one. It is not so important that you should know about the fact of God as that you should increasingly grow in the ability to feel the presence of God.”

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-192 Section-2)
As they walked along, Jesus said to John, "John, do you love me?" And when John answered, "Yes, Master, with all my heart," the Master said: "Then, John, give up your intolerance and learn to love men as I have loved you. Devote your life to proving that love is the greatest thing in the world. It is the love of God that impels men to seek salvation. Love is the ancestor of all spiritual goodness, the essence of the true and the beautiful."

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

This coming Wednesday morning I will be leaving for Bogus Basin in Boise Idaho to attend the “Building Spiritual Unity in the New Millenium” Conference being put on by the "Association for Light & Life" (ALL) http://www.associationforlightandlife.org
I will be there 'till Sunday and will not be back home until late Sunday Evening. Therefore Next Sunday's Service will be sent out on Monday (the day after) rather than on Sunday. I will send out this week's SOW Seeds Story before I leave on Wednesday.

Today's Sunday Service is the First of hopefully Many Services by The Church Within's Newest Ordained Minister, Rick Giles (as promised a few weeks ago). YAY!!!

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #410, is The Path Toward Enlightenment…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-2)
Spiritual development depends, first, on the maintenance of a living spiritual connection with true spiritual forces and, second, on the continuous bearing of spiritual fruit: yielding the ministry to one's fellows of that which has been received from one's spiritual benefactors.

(From: The KJV Bible - John 4:13-14)
Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

(From: The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 5.12)
A Karma-yogi, abandoning the fruit of work, attains Supreme Bliss while others, who are attached to the fruits of work, become bound by selfish work.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
I thought I would share something I wrote back in the late seventies. I was working in the garden and this "thought" kept running around in my head. So, I stopped everything and wrote it down.

The Path Toward Enlightenment:

This path requires much effort. It is much like digging a spring garden. Much cultivation is needed; the weeds of the mind must be removed; fear which chokes character; envy, a pride which crowds love; inertia which blocks growth.

As one reaches the end of soul cultivation, sincere, disciplined, and devoted effort must be applied. Row after row may lead to the feeling that enough has been done already, or perhaps the feeling that one has done greatly. Pursue! The end is near; the effort is more intense.

Final cultivation, however, is not enlightenment. Now begins the process of fertilization. Diligent study of the writings of the sages, one pointed and wholehearted meditation and worship, complete dedication to the complete fulfillment of God's will. All these must enrich one's life.

Fertilization is itself not enlightenment either. Next comes the planting of the spiritual seeds in this soul soil, free from mind weeds and enriched with devoted practice. These seeds are the seeds of truth, beauty, goodness, high ideals, spiritual love, compassion and mercy, tolerance, patience, grace, peace, sincerity, consistency, constancy, and consecration.

Upon completion of planting, enlightenment has not been attained. The most important stage has begun, the grace of divine ministry; the spiritual sun which illuminates our being must be received. The spiritual bestowal's, the water of God which nourishes our seedlings must be received. Vitalization of our efforts comes from God.

This is not full enlightenment. Now begins our bearing period. In divine partnership we put forth spiritual fruit; wholehearted service ministry for our brethren on the path of soul cultivation, fertilization, and seeding; and honest prayer for the grace bestowal's of God upon us all.

This is the harvest. This is enlightenment. We have not acquired it; we may have taken part in preparing it; it is not ours; enlightenment gained is enlightenment shared - only. Given by God, bestowed by his children, received by our brothers and sisters...with pure love.
[Composed –1976]

A young businessman, starting his own firm, rented a beautiful office and furnished it with expensive antiques. On his first day of business, a man approached and entered the outer office.

Wishing to appear busy, the businessman picked up the phone and started to pretend he had a big deal working. He threw huge figures around and made giant commitments.

Finally, he hung up and asked the visitor, "Can I help you?"

The visitor replied, "Sure. I've come to install the phone!"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Well, the conference I attended Wednesday thru Sunday this last week (hosted by the Association for Light and Life—ALL), was an Exceptional experience of Loving Unity in philosophic Diversity. Since the Theme of the conference was Unity, I did the Sunday morning Worship Service there on “Unity.” I didn't record the Service, so this Service will be somewhat different than the one I gave live on Sunday, but the topic is still…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #411, is Unity…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: The KJV Bible - Psalm 133:1)

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

(From: Jesus - The Urantia Papers - Paper-141 Section-5)
James Zebedee had asked, "Master, how shall we learn to see alike and thereby enjoy more harmony among ourselves?" When Jesus heard this question, he was stirred within his spirit, so much so that he replied: "James, James, when did I teach you that you should all see alike? I have come into the world to proclaim spiritual liberty to the end that mortals may be empowered to live individual lives of originality and freedom before God. I do not desire that social harmony and fraternal peace shall be purchased by the sacrifice of free personality and spiritual originality. What I require of you, my apostles, is spirit unity--and that you can experience in the joy of your united dedication to the wholehearted doing of the will of my Father in heaven. You do not have to see alike or feel alike or even think alike in order spiritually to be alike. Spiritual unity is derived from the consciousness that each of you is indwelt, and increasingly dominated, by the spirit gift of the heavenly Father.

(From: Darid - 5/4/97 The North Idaho TeaM)
The unity to be realized in this world is the understanding of the unique relationship every child has with our Creator, and this is realized in the sharing of our inner life with our fellows. The unity becomes overtly recognizable. Each individual discovers the Father in his own heart and soul, but to realize the camaraderie of kinship, we must discover this same Father in others. This discovery removes the conflicts that arise from misunderstanding.

(From: Abdul Baha, April 19, 1912)
The most important principle of divine philosophy is the oneness of the world of humanity, the unity of mankind, the bond conjoining East and West, the tie of love which blends human hearts.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-155 Section-6)
The religion of the spirit requires only unity of experience--uniformity of destiny--making full allowance for diversity of belief. The religion of the spirit requires only uniformity of insight, not uniformity of viewpoint and outlook. The religion of the spirit does not demand uniformity of intellectual views, only unity of spirit feeling.

(From: Friedrich Nietzsche (1844 - 1900)
At the bottom every man knows well enough that he is a unique human being, only once on this earth; and by no extraordinary chance will such a marvelously picturesque piece of diversity in unity as he is, ever be put together a second time.

(From: The KJV Bible - Ephesians 4:1-6)
I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-48 Section-7)
Few mortals ever dare to draw anything like the sum of personality credits established by the combined ministries of nature and grace. The majority of impoverished souls are truly rich, but they refuse to believe it.

(From: John Dryden (1631 - 1700)
Let grace and goodness be the principal loadstone of thy affections. For love which hath ends, will have an end; whereas that which is founded on true virtue, will always continue.

(From: Jesus - The Urantia Papers - Paper-150 Section-9)
“The transformations of grace are wrought in response to the living faith of those who are the beneficiaries."

(From: The RSV Bible - Acts 20:32)
And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

(From: Jesus - The Urantia Papers - Paper-147 Section-8)
"Grow in grace by means of that living faith which grasps the fact that you are the sons of God while at the same time it recognizes every man as a brother."

(From: Denis Waitley)
Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.

(From: Jesus - The Urantia Papers - Paper-176 Section-3)
You cannot stand still in the affairs of the eternal kingdom. My Father requires all his children to grow in grace and in a knowledge of the truth. You who know these truths must yield the increase of the fruits of the spirit and manifest a growing devotion to the unselfish service of your fellow servants. And remember that, inasmuch as you minister to one of the least of my brethren, you have done this service to me.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 5:2-5)
Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-2 Section-4)
God is inherently kind, naturally compassionate, and everlastingly merciful. And never is it necessary that any influence be brought to bear upon the Father to call forth his loving-kindness. The creature's need is wholly sufficient to insure the full flow of the Father's tender mercies and his saving grace. Since God knows all about his children, it is easy for him to forgive. The better man understands his neighbor, the easier it will be to forgive him, even to love him.

(From: Ham - 1/18/04 The Nashville TeaM)
Self-control comes naturally and in harmony with the very relinquishing of control, the very embrace of the greater self without pressure or fear. Think about the grace of God and how this grace touches your life and allows all things to become new. Rejoice, my son, and be exceedingly glad.

(From: Frederick Buechner)
The grace of God means something like: Here is your life. You might never have been, but you are because the party wouldn't have been complete without you. Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid. I am with you. Nothing can ever separate us. It's for you I created the universe. I love you. There's only one catch. Like any other gift, the gift of grace can be yours only if you'll reach out and take it. Maybe being able to reach out and take it is a gift too.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-32 Section-3)
The perfection of the creatures of time, when finally achieved, is wholly an acquirement, a bona fide personality possession. While the elements of grace are freely admixed, nevertheless, the creature attainments are the result of individual effort and actual living, personality reaction to the existing environment.

(From: The RSV Bible - John 1:16)
And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace.

The Sermon
***********
“In the State of Grace”

Have you ever heard that particular term before? I've come to believe, through my own personal experiences, that we All Live in the “State” of Grace. I Am of course talking about God's Grace (ie: Provision, Support, Aid, Assistance, Potential). God's Grace is Surrounding us at ALL times (what with it being Infinite and all ;-). It is our own individual, personal Desire, Intention (and let us not forget “Attention”), however, that makes God's Grace Accessible to us… allows us to actually Use it.

It is becoming more and more obvious to me as well, that God's Grace is Custom Tailored to each and every unique individual. We are not all endowed with exactly the Same opportunities for Grace---Equivalent Opportunities to be Sure, and Limited only by our desire for God's Will and our ability to pay attention---but none can exhaust his or her Supply of God's Grace that is ever waiting to be Discovered, Absorbed, Lived.

I bet we've all experienced people to whom it seems God's Grace is just continually flowing in and through their lives… haven't You? You know… Things just seem to go their way? Perhaps not so much in the Material sense as in the Spiritual. They have a certain Peace about them, Love seems to emanate from them easily, they have a way about them bordering on Exuberance without fanaticism. What do they have that allow them to access God's Grace so well? What is it that puts it so perceptibly in motion in their lives? Is there not a certain Grace-Fullness about them?

Is there anything in My life that inhibits that type of grace Reception? Is there anything I can think of that I do that keeps me from being Full of Grace? If I have discovered anything that may hinder my Acceptance of Grace, have I been willing to give control of it over to my Paradise Father instead of trying to control it myself? If I discover something new (before unnoticed in my behavior), that restrains my reception of Grace, will I be willing to change it… give it up if need be? What would Your answers to these questions be?

Is there something…. ?

Let us All Live, Learn and Grow in the State we call Grace. It is the precursor of Inner Peace, Love and Happiness. Seek it, and you Will Find it. I Guarantee it.

*******************************************

Quotes
*******
(From: Plato (427 BC - 347 BC)
All men are by nature equal, made all of the same earth by one Workman; and however we deceive ourselves, as dear unto God is the poor peasant as the mighty prince.

(From: Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)
A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

(From: The Fountainhead - Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982)
Whatever their future, at the dawn of their lives, men seek a noble vision of man's nature and of life's potential

(From: Sydney Smith (1771 - 1845)
Whatever you are by nature, keep to it; never desert your line of talent. Be what nature intended you for and you will succeed.

(From: Shakti Gawain)
We will discover the nature of our particular genius when we stop trying to conform to our own or to other peoples' models, learn to be ourselves, and allow our natural channel to open.

(From: Henry Ward Beecher (1813 - 1887)
Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-130 Section-6)
But most valuable of all, your potential of real achievement is the spirit which lives within you, and which will stimulate and inspire your mind to control itself and activate the body if you will release it from the fetters of fear and thus enable your spiritual nature to begin your deliverance from the evils of inaction by the power-presence of living faith. And then, forthwith, will this faith vanquish fear of men by the compelling presence of that new and all-dominating love of your fellows which will so soon fill your soul to overflowing because of the consciousness which has been born in your heart that you are a child of God.

(From: The RSV Bible - Ephesians 4:23-24)
and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

(From: Hugh Blair)
True gentleness is founded on a sense of what we owe to him who made us and to the common nature which we all share.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-101 Section-3)
Through religious faith the soul of man reveals itself and demonstrates the potential divinity of its emerging nature by the characteristic manner in which it induces the mortal personality to react to certain trying intellectual and testing social situations.

(From: Plato (427 BC - 347 BC)
He who is of calm and happy nature will hardly feel the pressure of age, but to him who is of an opposite disposition youth and age are equally a burden.

(From: The Book of Runes - #17 Movement/Progress)
If you are feeling at a loss, unclear about the need to act, consider what is timely to your nature, and remember: What is yours will come to you.

The Sermon
***********
While I was searching for Quotes late last night and early this morning, a nearly 4 hour process, I wasn't really sure about what their eventual Focus would turn out to be until I finally got them arranged into their present order. Actually, they kind of seemed to arrange themselves into a particular flow, if you know what I mean. Anyway… once the flow felt right to me, I read them in their current arrangement and here's what they made Me think about…

That line in the last Quote, “What is yours will come to you” made me consider, What Is really mine?

Is it what I want for me? Is it what God wants for me? If What I want for me and what God wants for me aren't exactly the same thing, Is my own Faith in the Wisdom and Benevolence of God sufficient to prefer rather what God wants for me? I know that God wants only what is best for me, and He probably knows better than I what that might be… OK, OK, take the probably out of it… God Undoubtedly knows better what is best for me. So if I want what is actually best for me, then I should actually want Only what God wants for me, Right? It's funny… when my Soul is doing the considering, the answer to that question seems so Obvious… but when my ego is in charge of the debate, the answer isn't really all that clear. Go Figure, Huh?

So that's what reading Today's Quotes made me think about this morning.

What did they make You think about? If my Sermon/Conversation made you forget, it's OK to go back and read the Quotes over again. It's OK, I'll wait while you do…

…alright, so what Did they make you think about? (You don't really need to tell me… just Remember!)
