Now that I'm 'older', here's what I've discovered.........

1. I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.
2. My wild oats have turned into prunes and All Bran.
3. I finally got my head together; now my body is falling apart.
4. Funny, I don't remember being absent minded...
5. All reports are in; life is now officially unfair.
6. If all is not lost, where is it?
7. It is easier to get older than it is to get wiser.
8. Some days you're the dog; some days you're the hydrant.
9. I wish the buck stopped here; I sure could use a few...
10. Kids in the back seat cause accidents.
11. Accidents in the back seat cause kids.
12. It's hard to make a comeback when you haven't been anywhere.
13. The only time the world beats a path to your door is when you're in the bathroom.
14. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would have put them on my knees.
15. When I'm finally holding all the cards, why does everyone decide to play chess?
16. It's not hard to meet expenses... they're everywhere.
17. The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth.
18. These days, I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter...I go somewhere to get something and then wonder what I'm hereafter.

(From: The American Standard Bible - John 14:16-20)
"I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. "After a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you will live also. "In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-193 “Bestowal of the Spirit of Truth” Section-3)
When man yields the "fruits of the spirit" in his life, he is simply showing forth the traits which the Master manifested in his own earthly life. When Jesus was on earth, he lived his life as one personality--Jesus of Nazareth. As the indwelling spirit of the "new teacher," the Master has, since Pentecost, been able to live his life anew in the experience of every truth-taught believer.

(From: The Young's Literal Translation Bible - Acts 2:1-4)
And in the day of the Pentecost being fulfilled, they were all with one accord at the same place, and there came suddenly out of the heaven a sound as of a bearing violent breath, and it filled all the house where they were sitting, and there appeared to them divided tongues, as it were of fire; it sat also upon each one of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit…

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-193 “Bestowal of the Spirit of Truth” Section-3)
Do not overlook the fact that the Spirit of Truth was bestowed upon all sincere believers; this gift of the spirit did not come only to the apostles. The one hundred and twenty men and women assembled in the upper chamber all received the new teacher, as did all the honest of heart throughout the whole world. This new teacher was bestowed upon mankind, and every soul received him in accordance with the love for truth and the capacity to grasp and comprehend spiritual realities.

(From: Abraham - The Woods Cross TeaM 11/26/01)
You that can feel are truly blessed. You that can see with the eyes of the Spirit are truly blessed. You that can hear with the heart are truly blessed, and when you have finished this days work in the flesh you will know just how blessed you were to have experienced existence from the ground up. Take not this life lying down. Seize every moment and really feel, learn and act from your true self, your divine self.

(From: Ham - The Nashville TeaM 10/07/01)
Self-understanding is something which should be never ending. You are a child of infinity and you have an eternal destiny, therefore, self-discovery is also an eternal process. Have courage as you discover who you really are. Each new situation has the effect of eliciting new responses and new self-awareness. Let circumstances challenge you and allow yourselves to open up to new awareness, both outside and inside. You have a choice, you can go through life avoiding stimulation and change or you can embrace the new and honestly confront what you feel and experience.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-195 “After Pentecost” Section-7)
And in all your solicitation concerning the necessity for self-expression do not make the mistake of failing to provide for Adjuster-expression, the manifestation of your real and better self.

(From: George Harrison)
“Everything else can wait but the search for God cannot wait, and love one another."

The Sermon

Feel the Spirit… Express the Spirit… Be the Spirit.
Feel Truth… Express Truth… Be the Truth.
Feel Beauty… Express Beauty… Be the Beauty.
Feel Goodness… Express Goodness… Be the Goodness.
Feel Love… Express Love… Be the Love.
Feel God… Express God… “Be you perfect, even as your Father in Heaven is Perfect.”

Fortunately there is a Helper, a Teacher, a Friend, a Spirit Within that we can Rely upon, that we can Learn from, that we can Confide in, and that we can Try to be more like… Whenever we Want… Whenever we Remember… Whenever we Choose… Whenever we Will.

“If not Now, then When?”

(From: Thomas Paine [1737 - 1809])
The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.

(From: Albert Einstein)
"A human being is part of the whole called by us Universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest... This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty... We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive."

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-133 Section-4)
Know you not that the mystery of eternal salvation dwells within your own soul? Do you not know that the God of heaven has sent his spirit to live within you, and that this spirit will lead all truth-loving and God-serving mortals out of this life and through the portals of death up to the eternal heights of light where God waits to receive his children? And never forget: You who know God are the sons of God if you truly yearn to be like him."

(From: Ham - The Nashville TeaM)
Faith is more, much more, than conforming to a set of rules and professing faith in a set of principles. Faith is a conduit from the divine to the human so that once man lays hold of that saving faith with all his is and all he has, that grace coming down from the Father transforms the man into more than he is.

(From: excerpt from “The Prophet” - by Kahlil Gibran)
Say not, "I have found the truth," but rather, "I have found a truth."
Say not, "I have found the path of the soul." Say rather, "I have met the soul walking upon my path." For the soul walks upon all paths.
The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed.
The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.

(From: Mahatma Gandhi)
In the attitude of silence the soul finds the path in a clearer light, and what is elusive and deceptive resolves itself into crystal clearness. Our life is a long and arduous quest after Truth.

(From: Elizabeth Cady Stanton, 1890)
The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls.

(From: Epictetus [55 AD - 135 AD])
When you close your doors, and make darkness within, remember never to say that you are alone, for you are not alone; nay, God is within, and your genius is within. And what need have they of light to see what you are doing?

(From: John Fletcher, 1647)
Man is his own star and the soul that can render an honest and perfect man commands all light, all influence, all fate.

(From: Henry George)
Let no man imagine that he has no influence. Whoever he may be, and wherever he may be placed, the man who thinks becomes a light and a power.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 5:14-16)
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

(From: Dag Hammarskjold)
You are the lens in the beam. You can only receive, give, and possess the light as the lens does. If you seek yourself, you rob the lens of its transparency.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-132 Section-7)
If we know God, our real business on earth is so to live as to permit the Father to reveal himself in our lives, and thus will all God-seeking persons see the Father and ask for our help in finding out more about the God who in this manner finds expression in our lives."

The Sermon
***********
God's Light warms the ego as it enters.
But God's Light Warms the Soul and then Other Souls as it Passes Through.

Let a little bit of God's Light show through today… and then tomorrow, a little more… and the day after, more still… then the next still more… and so on… until All is Illuminated and Focus is Perfected.

Be Patient… it is a continual process Likely to take an Eternity.

A golfer who was well into his golden years had a lifelong ambition to play one hole at Pebble Beach, California, the way the pros do it. The pros drive the ball out over the water onto the green that is on a spit of land that juts out off the coast.
It was something he had tried hundreds of times without success. His ball always fell short, into the water. Because of this he never used a new ball on this particular hole. He always picked out one that had a cut or a nick.
One year he went out to Pebble Beach to try again. When he came to the fateful hole, he teed up an old cut ball and said a silent prayer. Before he hit it, however, a powerful voice from above said: WAIT... REPLACE THAT OLD BALL WITH A BRAND-NEW BALL. He complied, with some slight misgiving, despite the fact that the Lord seemed to be implying that He was going to let him finally achieve his lifelong ambition.
As he stepped up to the tee once more, the voice came down again: WAIT... STEP BACK... TAKE A PRACTICE SWING. So he stepped back and took a practice swing. The voice boomed out again: TAKE ANOTHER PRACTICE SWING. He did.
Silence followed. Then the voice spoke out again: PUT BACK THE OLD BALL.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-103 Section-4)
The sense of guilt (not the consciousness of sin) comes either from interrupted spiritual communion or from the lowering of one's moral ideals.

(From: Samuel Ullman)
Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-133 Section-7)
The human mind does not well stand the conflict of double allegiance. It is a severe strain on the soul to undergo the experience of an effort to serve both good and evil. The supremely happy and efficiently unified mind is the one wholly dedicated to the doing of the will of the Father in heaven. Unresolved conflicts destroy unity and may terminate in mind disruption. But the survival character of a soul is not fostered by attempting to secure peace of mind at any price, by the surrender of noble aspirations, and by the compromise of spiritual ideals; rather is such peace attained by the stalwart assertion of the triumph of that which is true, and this victory is achieved in the overcoming of evil with the potent force of good.

(From: Albert Einstein)
The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me with the joy of living are goodness, beauty, and truth. To make a goal of comfort or happiness has never appealed to me; a system of ethics built on this basis would be sufficient only for a herd of cattle.

(From: Robert F. Kennedy)
It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

(From: Olfana - Half Moon Bay, CA TeaM)
Hopefulness is a condition of the heart and mind combined in trust that God's Love inhabits the plans of your life. Hopeful actions are those done in trust that God's Will envelops the outcome of your efforts. Hopefulness is a state of mind which can be conveyed to others by encouraging their increased perception of the benevolent, tender supervision of our lives by those who serve Deity. Such trust springs from the innocent and sure faith we have in God's Love for us. Being deserving of this Love, we develop expectations of its evidence in our lives.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-2)
Spiritual growth is first an awakening to needs, next a discernment of meanings, and then a discovery of values. The evidence of true spiritual development consists in the exhibition of a human personality motivated by love, activated by unselfish ministry, and dominated by the wholehearted worship of the perfection ideals of divinity. And this entire experience constitutes the reality of religion as contrasted with mere theological beliefs.

(From: D. H. Lawrence)
It is a fine thing to establish one's own religion in one's heart, not to be dependent on tradition and second-hand ideals. Life will seem to you, later, not a lesser, but a greater thing.

(From: Carl Schurz)
Ideals are like stars: you will not succeed in touching them with your hands, but like the seafaring man on the ocean desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them, you reach your destiny.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Remember… they who would ridicule another's devotion to their Highest Ideals, are they who are guilty of compromising their own. Truly, Misery loves company.

Forget not that a Compromise of Ideals “This time” makes Next time far easier.

Ideals cannot be taken away nor stolen… there is always some personal choice involved in their disappearance (be it through ignorance, immaturity, conscious resign to seeming inevitabilities or through outright defiance)… and… a Certain and corresponding measure of guilt for making that choice. Funny, isn't it, how the ego-self so often chastises itself most severely for making painful choices due merely to lack of knowledge or to inexperience or to weakness? Why Is that do you think?

Ideals are never lost… only left behind or discarded. One of the most demanding challenges in life is remembering where one left them, and then going back to retrieve them. By No Means is it an impossible task to accomplish, only difficult to wholeheartedly begin and steadfastly continue to pursue. The Rewards are Invaluable!

The Highest Principals evolve the Highest Ideals… allow the Fondest Hopes… encourage Enduring Faith. Hold Firmly to them. From these are your most Cherished Dreams discovered… pursued… revealed… made possible… and achieved.

The Reverend Billy Graham tells of a time early in his career when he arrived in a small town to preach a sermon. Wanting to mail a letter, he asked a young boy where the post office was.

When the boy told him, Reverend Graham thanked him and said, "If you'll come to the Baptist church this evening, you can hear me tell everyone how to get to Heaven."

"I don't think I'll be there," the boy said. "You don't even know your way to the post office."

What has Value?

Quotes

(From: Ayn Rand)
Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds from the achievement of one's values.

(From: The KJV Bible - Matthew 16:26)
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

(From: Ignazio Silone)
On a group of theories one can found a school; but on a group of values one can found a culture, a civilization, a new way of living together among men.

(From: Ham 12/16/01 - The Nashville TeaM)
You learn to value peace, order, and prosperity by experiencing the opposite of those things -- war, poverty, and social strife. As you individually raise your values, you raise also the values of your world. When you individually strive for the ideal of loving all your brothers and sisters, then does society advance toward that ideal that much more. You, my children, are like the leaven in bread. Your ideals and your values will spread throughout the whole raising the entire society.

(From: Albert Einstein)
Try not to become a man of success but rather to become a man of value.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-3)
The supreme value of human life consists in growth of values, progress in meanings, and realization of the cosmic interrelatedness of both of these experiences. And such an experience is the equivalent of God-consciousness. Such a mortal, while not supernatural, is truly becoming superhuman; an immortal soul is evolving.

(From: Albert Einstein)
One should guard against preaching to young people success in the customary form as the main aim in life. The most important motive for work in school and in life is pleasure in work, pleasure in its result, and the knowledge of the value of the result to the community.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-4)
In physical life the senses tell of the existence of things; mind discovers the reality of meanings; but the spiritual experience reveals to the individual the true values of life. These high levels of human living are attained in the supreme love of God and in the unselfish love of man. If you love your fellow men, you must have discovered their values. Jesus loved men so much because he placed such a high value upon them. You can best discover values in your associates by discovering their motivation. If some one irritates you, causes feelings of resentment, you should sympathetically seek to discern his viewpoint, his reasons for such objectionable conduct. If once you understand your neighbor, you will become tolerant, and this tolerance will grow into friendship and ripen into love.

(From: Ham 12/16/01 - The Nashville TeaM)
There is a nugget of love to be found in all things. Sometimes, it takes some mining to find it for sure, it takes some perseverance, but be assured you will find it so long as you are free in the spirit and open. These are the treasures that none can take from you and the treasure you will carry with you when you depart this life.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-147 Section-5)
What you are becoming day by day is of infinitely more importance than what you are today.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Y' Are what y' Eat.
As our values grow, so also grow we.
As we grow, so also do our values grow.

An Infant values, above all, Nurture…

Nurture is what replaces pain with Comfort, fear with Love and insecurity with Assurance.

An Infant can do Nothing for itself… Nurture is all it has to rely upon.

So begins the Lifelong Experience of Value and Values

The Value of Nurture may be forgotten, overshadowed, hidden by the requirements of Survival over the years, but the Need for Nurture lasts one a Lifetime.

A Child values Nurture still, but in addition learns to value Material things, and a Sense of Belonging, and Friendship…

The Exploration of the Material world is so impressive to the child mind that it infuses it with a drive for Material Value and the desire for “More.” In a material world, material values are inevitable as well as necessary to physical survival. Material Values encourage action, provide momentum, and stimulate imagination, though unchecked can become a serious inhibitor of growth toward Spiritual Maturity.

The recognition of the Value of Belonging is instinctive… though oftentimes can become segregated in it's scope. It fosters Association, Camaraderie, and Brotherhood when Free although separatism and prejudice in enforced captivity.

The true Value of Friendship is recognized concurrently with the first Experience of it. Even those who may spurn Friendship, for reasons unknown, cannot escape the inner longing and need for it.

Family Values in the life of a Child have a pronounced influence upon the Personal Values evolved in later life.

Adolescent Hormones unfailingly initiate a new Series of Values which may seem, at times, to completely override previously acquired values, but they are still indissolubly bonded to them irrespective of outwardly perceivable appearances. Priorities may and Do shift as conditions dictate… Obviously. ;-)

After that relatively short but Intense Struggle is survived…

The Young Adult then, if not previously, hopefully starts to learn the Value of Self Reliability and the Integration of Personal Values into life's situations. The drive for Personal Material Success has reached escape velocity and the journey toward Individual Accomplishment is begun. Values are rigorously Tested and Reassessed and Rearranged in Importance and Adjusted depending upon what it is one Values as Success. A Balance between Material and Spiritual Values during this period of life produces Harmony and Personal Satisfaction.

I believe the term “Midlife Crisis” should be relabeled, Midlife Reassessment.
Looking back upon the first half of life, one inevitably asks, “Do I feel like I have completely or partially succeeded or, do I feel like I have completely or partially failed?” “Did I prioritize my Values successfully, or not?” If not perfectly, then Value Values are Reassessed… perhaps rearranged… unquestionably Struggled with to a greater or lesser degree. Forgotten, even neglected Values may resurface or reemerge once again to favorably influence the course of the second half of life… or to be rejected once again in despair.

Living up to ones Own Highest Values is Always an Option. It is Never too late, nor is it ever too Early.

So Many could go So Far if only they were to seek Foremost to discover the Value which God places upon them rather than the value that mankind or society imposes upon them.

Y' Are what y' Eat.
As our values grow, so also grow we.
As we grow, so also do our values grow.

(From: Herodotus [485 BC - 425 BC], “The Histories of Herodotus”)
In peace, children inter their parents;
war violates the order of nature and causes parents to inter their children.

(From: Dwight D. Eisenhower)
I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it.

(From: Jawaharlal Nehru)
Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul. Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is also a state of mind. Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people.

(From: Elisabeth Kubler-Ross)
There is no need to go to India or anywhere else to find peace. You will find that deep place of silence right in your room, your garden or even your bathtub.

(From: Peter Minard)
Not merely an absence of noise, Real Silence begins when a reasonable being withdraws from the noise in order to find peace and order in his inner sanctuary.

(Excerpt From: Ham 12/23/01 - The Nashville TeaM)
The spiritual life, for those who have the courage to truly follow it, is one of decreasing burden and increasing joy. Following the Master requires you to put down guilt, put down remorse, resentment. It requires you to take up something new in its place. For when you live for him, you take on responsibilities to love your neighbors, the responsibility to forgive and to be loving toward all that you come into contact with.

(Excerpt From: Michael 12/04/01 - The Garden TeaM)
Service, and Love, and Compassion, and Seeking the Father's Will, will always provide for you exactly what your soul truly desires at exactly the perfect time, because it is Father's time. When you can fully experience this in your soul, then you have attained the truest form of peace.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-3)
Religion is not a technique for attaining a static and blissful peace of mind; it is an impulse for organizing the soul for dynamic service. It is the enlistment of the totality of selfhood in the loyal service of loving God and serving man.

(From: Julia Louise Woodruff, 1910)
Out of the strain of the Doing,
Into the peace of the Done.

(From: The KJV Bible - Matthew 5:9)
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-181 Section-1)
The peace of Jesus is the joy and satisfaction of a God-knowing individual who has achieved the triumph of learning fully how to do the will of God while living the mortal life in the flesh. The peace of Jesus' mind was founded on an absolute human faith in the actuality of the divine Father's wise and sympathetic overcare.

(From: Thomas a Kempis, 1420)
First keep the peace within yourself, then you can also bring peace to others.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-131 Section-3)
"Cheerfulness and gladness are the rewards of deeds well done and to the glory of the Immortal. No man can rob you of the liberty of your own mind. When the faith of your religion has emancipated your heart, when the mind, like a mountain, is settled and immovable, then shall the peace of the soul flow tranquilly like a river of waters.

(From: Victor Hugo)
Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.

(From: The KJV Bible - Luke 2:14)
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

OK Choir! For the final Sunday Service of 2001, let us all together just practice for 2002 by singing a line from a familiar old Christian song. How about if we only practice this one line 'till we get it right, shall we?

Ready Musicians, Ready Singers… slowly and with Feeling now,
And……

“Let there be Peace on Earth,
and Let it Begin with Me…”

Light And Life Garden Update (Year in Review)
*****************************************
As Winter started “settling in” here at the Garden Retreat in Post Falls, North Idaho, I began thinking about all of the things on the property that “I didn't get done when I had the chance.” I had expected/wanted to be able to get more done this year. -sigh- But then, that's the Way of it, doesn't it Seem? Funny… that at the beginning of the year I had imagined that I would have been satisfied getting done Half of what I did. I must have greatly underestimated the potentials/advantages of using The Tractor, that so Many of you So Generously and Lovingly helped to provide and maintain. Things that had seemed “out of reach” got accomplished, and as tasks got accomplished, the “Picture” grew larger. Go Figure…

        Anyways…

Here are the (somewhat in order) things that got done at The Light and Life Garden this year:
“Thank You Again!”

[still winter]
Upper level grading for the Jacuzzi and Patio area
Concrete and electrical for Jacuzzi pad
Installation of Jacuzzi (I could have used it before, while I was getting Ready for it <G>)
        Church Office/Kitchen Pantry remodel
42 sick Pine trees cut down
[thaw]
While using the tractor to move downed trees into more manageable areas, a new Road was inadvertently created which connected the Upper level drive with the old logging road that goes through the middle level of the property. The Road also defined the shape and borders of what was to eventually become “The Faith Garden.” “Faith Hill Road” is not named after the singer. ;-)
33 of the downed trees limbed and logged (9 of them are still waiting for me)
Begin widening the upper driveway an additional 8+ feet
Bare root 5 in 1 Apple Tree Planted in Upper Patio area
Concrete poured for half of Patio
The Planting of 3 Pear trees, 4 Cherry trees, 3 Plum trees, 17 Raspberry plants and 6 Blueberry bushes.
Flower garden planted around Apple tree
Backhoe digs 24 2' x 2' x 2' holes for upright 10' fence logs that are the perimeter (and deer fence) for the Faith Garden.
Garden now enclosed by 8' wire fencing
        Garden Walkways created
Drip irrigation system installed for the Fruits
2nd half of Upper Patio Concrete finished
Finish widening Upper Drive and continue widening parking area
New front door to Kitchen installed
        Fireplace installed in Living area
Grading for the new pad for Utility Shed/Garage and installation
[late fall]
“But I don't have all the trees limbed and logged yet… and the Patio fence and lawn aren't done yet… and I need to get the front Deck done… and I don't have any firewood cut… and I haven't got the new doorway to the Patio installed yet… and…
[frozen and snow covered once again]
No more I can do outside…
        Begin Kitchen/Dining/Living remodel
        Continue Kitchen/Dining/Living remodel…

…end 2001.

…but Only the Beginning. I had better get At it!

The Creator's Infinite Love to all of You,
Pastor Daniel
