Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

There's a Lot of talk about Freedom, but What is Freedom really?

Quotes
*******
(from: Charles Darwin).
I have steadily endeavored to keep my mind free so to give up any hypothesis, however much beloved (and I cannot resist forming one on every subject), as soon as facts are shown to be opposed to it.

(From: P. J. O'Rourke).
One of the annoying things about believing in free will and individual responsibility is the difficulty of finding somebody to blame your problems on. And when you do find somebody, it's remarkable how often his picture turns up on your driver's license.

(From: Henry David Thoreau).
How rarely I meet with a man who can be free, even in thought! We all live according to rule. Some men are bedridden; all world-ridden.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 8:5)
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

(From: Chief Joseph, of the Nez Perces')
Treat all men alike. Give them all the same law. Give them all an even chance to live and grow. All men were made by the same Great Spirit Chief. They are all brothers. The Earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it......Let me be a free man, free to travel, free to stop, free to work, free to trade.....where I choose my own teachers, free to follow the religion of my fathers, free to think and talk and act for myself, and I will obey every law, or submit to the penalty."

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-141 Section-5)
One of the most eventful of all the evening conferences at Amathus was the session having to do with the discussion of spiritual unity. James Zebedee had asked, "Master, how shall we learn to see alike and thereby enjoy more harmony among ourselves?" When Jesus heard this question, he was stirred within his spirit, so much so that he replied: "James, James, when did I teach you that you should all see alike? I have come into the world to proclaim spiritual liberty to the end that mortals may be empowered to live individual lives of originality and freedom before God. I do not desire that social harmony and fraternal peace shall be purchased by the sacrifice of free personality and spiritual originality. What I require of you, my apostles, is spirit unity--and that you can experience in the joy of your united dedication to the wholehearted doing of the will of my Father in heaven. You do not have to see alike or feel alike or even think alike in order spiritually to be alike. Spiritual unity is derived from the consciousness that each of you is indwelt, and increasingly dominated, by the spirit gift of the heavenly Father. Your apostolic harmony must grow out of the fact that the spirit hope of each of you is identical in origin, nature, and destiny.
"In this way you may experience a perfected unity of spirit purpose and spirit understanding growing out of the mutual consciousness of the identity of each of your indwelling Paradise spirits; and you may enjoy all of this profound spiritual unity in the very face of the utmost diversity of your individual attitudes of intellectual thinking, temperamental feeling, and social conduct. Your personalities may be refreshingly diverse and markedly different, while your spiritual natures and spirit fruits of divine worship and brotherly love may be so unified that all who behold your lives will of a surety take cognizance of this spirit identity and soul unity; they will recognize that you have been with me and have thereby learned, and acceptably, how to do the will of the Father in heaven. You can achieve the unity of the service of God even while you render such service in accordance with the technique of your own original endowments of mind, body, and soul.

(From: Dwight D. Eisenhower)
Only our individual faith in freedom can keep us free.

(From: Ralph W. Sockman)
With the events of my life, some have been tragic and some have been happy. But when they are built together, they form a craft that floats and is going someplace. And I am comforted.

(From: Richard Lovelace)
If I have freedom in my love
And in my soul am free
Angels alone that soar above
Enjoy such liberty

(From: Henry David Thoreau).
The great art of life is how to turn the surplus life of the soul into life for the body.

The Sermon

How Free are you?

I'm not talking about National or Political freedom today, vital as they may be. Rather today, let us consider freedom of Thought and freedom of the Spirit... Free Will.

We would Like to think that we are Free to think our own Thoughts...
We would Like to think that we are Free to make our own Choices...
We would Like to think that we are Free to Live our own Lives...
...but how well do we Allow ourselves to be Free? Do we Truly exercise our own Free Wills in ways that set our Soul and our Spirit Free?

How much does what other people think effect Your Choices? Do you make choices based upon what you think others will think about you, or what You will think about you? Do you let People's Opinion, Societal or Religious Traditions, or even... Heaven Forbid... Commercials make your choices for you? Or... do you let God Guide you in making the Best Choices for yourself? Which one would you think you'd get the best Results from? Hmmm... Lem'mee Think....

If you make most of your choices based only on Opinion, accepted Usage or outside Pressure, how free are your choices? Pretty limited, wouldn't you say? Where is the freedom in That? It is a Subtle prison, but a prison none the less that Few can completely escape.

But... when you let God Guide you in the making of your choices, when you Ask for and Accept and Follow that Guidance, then are you Truly Free. Free to Love... Free to Grow... Free to Explore... Free to Live Life to it's Fullest.

God Loves us. We are God's little Children. Would God steer us Wrong?

Funny how ego thinks, isn't it? It thinks that living God's way is the prison, and that stepping through the Prison Gate will put it Into prison when in Reality living God's Way is the Gateway OUT of Prison.

Are you In or Out?

KNOW that You are a Unique and Cherished and Cared for Child of God, as is Everyone Else, and that Truth shall set you Free...

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-137 Section-6)
“Each of you must now return to his accustomed work just as if nothing had happened. Tell no man about me and remember that my kingdom is not to come with noise and glamor, but rather must it come through the great change which my Father will have wrought in your hearts and in the hearts of those who shall be called to join you in the councils of the kingdom. You are now my friends; I trust you and I love you; you are soon to become my personal associates. Be patient, be gentle. Be ever obedient to the Father's will. Make yourselves ready for the call of the kingdom. While you will experience great joy in the service of my Father, you should also be prepared for trouble, for I warn you that it will be only through much tribulation that many will enter the kingdom. But those who have found the kingdom, their joy will be full, and they shall be called the blest of all the earth. But do not entertain false hope; the world will stumble at my words. Even you, my friends, do not fully perceive what I am unfolding to your confused minds. Make no mistake; we go forth to labor for a generation of sign seekers. They will demand wonder-working as the proof that I am sent by my Father, and they will be slow to recognize in the revelation of my Father's love the credentials of my mission."
That evening, when they had returned to the land, before they went their way, Jesus, standing by the water's edge, prayed: "My Father, I thank you for these little ones who, in spite of their doubts, even now believe. And for their sakes have I set myself apart to do your will. And now may they learn to be one, even as we are one."

(from: The Welmek TeaM Transcript of 2-01-01)
I would like to share my definition of courage with you this evening. Courage is the capacity to act upon faith. It is the inner strength of character that you exhibit in times of confusion or turmoil. It is the driving force behind the concept of faith. It is the wind in the sails of faith that pilots your ship in the direction of God consciousness. It is a presence and it is a focus. Courage does require effort. It requires that you make an effort to be active, to participate in this unfolding adventure that you call living. When you stay stagnant, when you stay in a state of animated suspension, you will sense that there is something missing in the overall satisfaction and quality of life. Why is this? It is because you were not designed to be immobile, you were designed to have new experiences and to learn new ideas and to try on certain concepts and to share your experiences with your fellow human beings. All of this does take effort. Effort, because you must present yourselves to the world, you must show the world who you are. All of this requires a sensing of the presence of your personality, which is a gift of the Father. It requires you to focus on those elements on those elements of life and living that you would like to see manifested in your daily actions. Courage is the capacity to live with this in mind. It is the elemental fuel.

(From: The RSV Bible - John 13:34-35)
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

“A Gathering of Children”
(by: Pastor Daniel J. Megow 2-11-2001)

One day, there was a Gathering of Children. There was something Quite Unique about this particular group of children... in fact, Everything about this assembly of Human Beings was Conspicuously Dissimilar. These Children, of both sexes, varied greatly in age (from 6 -100 years young). Every race and blend of races on this planet were represented at this Gathering. There was, among these multi-colored children of all ages and persuasions, Representation of Every Human System of Belief/Philosophy/Religion/Faith. This Conglomerate of Individuals was So Diverse that no two could be said to view any ordinary aspect of Human Life on this world in the same way... with the same inner understanding of Reality.

Only Three things were Common to Every One of these people gathered here on this day. There were only Three things which Every One of them Shared. Each was Wholeheartedly Devoted to their own view of the world. Each believed, deep within their being, in a Higher, a Greater, a more Perfect Power/Energy/Being/Person/Cause/Source. And Thirdly, Each of them had been visited and brought here to this “Gathering of the Children” by a Radiant Being, Obviously not of this world. They had each been left at the doorway alone and told that the One whom they, and the world, had been Waiting for would be addressing them... would be giving to them the Message of the Ages / The Answer to the Biggest Question / The Truth. With the final words... “Now Enter the Doorway.”... the Entity that had brought them to this place, unceremoniously vanished leaving them all alone at the doorway to this Immense Structure.

Alone... with the underlying human fear of the unknown, the un-tried, the un-experienced. Each had faced a doorway which beckoned to their very Soul, their Spirit, their Innermost Being. And Each had to pass the test of overcoming their own relative level of fear before they had opened the door and stepped inside.
“Will my Whole Understanding of the World and of Reality be proved False... be Crushed... be Ripped Away from me? Could I Survive that?” “Will I have to Change my Beliefs about what is True, what is Real?” Will I have to Change Who I AM?”
Each had had to face these penetrating questions. Each had had to humbly choose the Supreme Lure of Truth before entering.

Each inside had entered through a different door, and the amount of Time that they each had spent alone at their doorway with their fears and their Faith varied Greatly from one to the other, and yet all had stepped into this Great Room at exactly the same moment. There was a specific place for each of them at the large circular grouping of tables in the center of the room in the very middle of which was a slightly raised circular platform. All were seated and there was not an extra chair in the room. Everyone knew they were here for a very Significant and Purposeful Reason, and None of them knew for Sure exactly what the Fullness of that Reason Was. Each thought they knew in their Heart what and Whom to Expect, and it is to be noted that None of them expected quite the same thing.

In front of each of them were the instructions: Talk about what you Believe in and about what You believe to be True and about what you expect to happen here today. Conversations began around the table. In the few hours that immediately followed, there was little consensus to be reached. Some were willing to listen to what others believed and some were not. Some believed that everyone else in the room was completely wrong in their beliefs... and others believed that everyone else in the room was Partially right in their beliefs. The attitude in the room was just starting to reach an unbearable level of disagreement and dispute when they all at once heard the unmistakable opening of THE BIG DOOR.

All were silent in anxious anticipation as the Person they had all been waiting for stepped into the room and moved purposefully to the very center of the raised stage. Not a single individual was disappointed by whom they now, at this very moment, beheld in front of them. Each of them Saw Exactly whom they Expected to see. Some saw their long awaited Jewish Messiah... some saw Jesus. Some saw Buddha... Others saw Mohamed. Some saw the Great Wise Chief... some the Nurturing Spirit of Mother. Some saw God... Allah... Jehovah... the Tao. There were those that saw a Being from Outer Space... some a Great White Light of Energy. Everyone looked Intently ahead at the very same being. While no two of them perceived exactly the same Person, they Each experienced in their Soul a certain inner knowingness of the Emanating Truth, Beauty, Goodness and Love.

Each person in the room Knew Undeniably at the very same moment that they had the Full and Complete Personal attention of the “One” their Soul had Longed for. Each of them heard at the Very Same Moment the words:

“You have Seen Me, You have Heard Me, You have Experienced Me, and You have Felt and Recognized My Presence. Now Go and Live Every Moment of the Rest of your Human Life Accordingly.
“Prepare yourself for the day when I will again Return to you. Let those whom you meet and those whom I place in your Path KNOW that you have been With me by your Excitement for Life, by your Goodness, by your Overflowing Love.
“Many there are on this world who do Not know Me or who fear to know Me. If only All could come to know Me in Their own unique way as well as You know Me in Yours, this world would soon begin to Transform and Evolve into the Beautiful expression of Paradise that was always and still Is it's True Destiny. Let then See how I effect Your Life so that they may be enticed to discover this Wonderful and Grace-filled way of living for Themselves. You need not Tell them how to go about finding Me; you need but, by your own Goodness and Love, Show them that YOU have Indeed found Me.
“I Leave you now, but I will Return before long. Go now, Each of you, and Help in Your Own Special way to Prepare the Way for My Return. All will experience Me when next I Come. Help Everyone to be Ready by becoming Ready Yourself. I Love you, and I Believe in You. Until we Meet again...”

...and at once the Center of the room was again empty, and Each was left with his and her own thoughts. They silently looked around at one another... into one another's eyes and into their Souls... and in unison they each smiled knowingly.

The very next breath that each of them took was in the very same place where each of them had started out... and Then the Questions. Had it Really Happened? Was I Really taken someplace? Was it Real?

Some after a time didn't believe that it really could have happened. They went back to living their life just as they had before; in fear and uncertainty. But Many... Many Believed and their Lives were changed... and are this very moment Preparing the Way for the Return.

The preceding Story is Purely a work of Fiction... or Is it?

        Have You heard the Words?

(From: Jim Cleveland)
"Those who are motivated by fear should prepare to have every issue become highly complicated and problematic. Those who are motivated by love will see the simplicity of it all and will receive the celestial help to breeze right through."

(From: Albert Schweitzer)
I think the most important quality in a person concerned with religion is absolute devotion to the truth.

(from: Sir Winston Churchill)
Men occasionally stumble on the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-132 Section-3)
Truth cannot be defined with words, only by living. Truth is always more than knowledge. Knowledge pertains to things observed, but truth transcends such purely material levels in that it consorts with wisdom and embraces such imponderables as human experience, even spiritual and living realities. Knowledge originates in science; wisdom, in true philosophy; truth, in the religious experience of spiritual living. Knowledge deals with facts; wisdom, with relationships; truth, with reality values.

(From: Albert Schweitzer)
It is not through knowledge, but through experience of the world that we are brought into relation with it.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-130 Section-4)
Knowledge is the sphere of the material or fact-discerning mind. Truth is the domain of the spiritually endowed intellect that is conscious of knowing God. Knowledge is demonstrable; truth is experienced. Knowledge is a possession of the mind; truth an experience of the soul, the progressing self. Knowledge is a function of the nonspiritual level; truth is a phase of the mind-spirit level of the universes. The eye of the material mind perceives a world of factual knowledge; the eye of the spiritualized intellect discerns a world of true values. These two views, synchronized and harmonized, reveal the world of reality, wherein wisdom interprets the phenomena of the universe in terms of progressive personal experience.

(From: Walt Whitman)
Whatever satisfies the soul is truth.

(From: The RSV Bible - John 16:13)
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-176 Section-3)
Truth is living; the Spirit of Truth is ever leading the children of light into new realms of spiritual reality and divine service. You are not given truth to crystallize into settled, safe, and honored forms. Your revelation of truth must be so enhanced by passing through your personal experience that new beauty and actual spiritual gains will be disclosed to all who behold your spiritual fruits and in consequence thereof are led to glorify the Father who is in heaven. Only those faithful servants who thus grow in the knowledge of the truth, and who thereby develop the capacity for divine appreciation of spiritual realities, can ever hope to "enter fully into the joy of their Lord."

(From: Elyon - N. Idaho Teacher Group 02/11/01)
Though the spirit does lead, you must choose. The spirit does not lead as one who tugs at a leash pulling you in a direction but rather stands as if behind you whispering, "Look this way. Look that way. Choose where to go and I will show you how to grow."

(from: Gandhi)
You must Be the change you wish to see in the world.

The Sermon
***********
OK... What should we talk about today???

Knowledge? Knowledge is Good.
Experience? Experience is Really good.
Truth? Yeah... Truth! Truth is Excellent!! Truth is Goodness Itself... and Beauty... and... well... let's Talk about Truth then!!!

What are some of the Properties of Truth?

One thing we all know about it, though perhaps wish maybe we Didn't, is that Truth can be BENT. Fairly Easily I might add. It's a Flexible thing to some degree I suppose. Bending it can be dangerous though, because when it Snaps back to it's natural Straightness it'll sting a little if it Hits you... could even knock you down if you've bent it too far and held it in that position for too long.

Truth can be Partial or Fragmented. Our Experience of Truth must Always be Partial... until we attain Perfection of course, but then it would Appear that Perfection is some ways Off for us yet---at least it appears that way to This observer. We get a lot of Fragments or Pieces of Truth in this intricate Puzzle we call Human life, don't We? The pieces in themselves don't always make a lot of sense until they start fitting together with Other pieces though. Have you noticed that? It seems like we spend the whole first half of our lives just finding all the corners and outer edge pieces and getting them put together right. I suppose it must take more Knowledge, Experience, Wisdom and Maturity to get the Inner Pieces put together right, ya Think?

Truth can be FOLDED... so that one can put it away more easily; Truth can be SPINDLED... thinking you are finished with it (better not discard it though in case you get audited); Truth can be Mutilated... we've all seen mutilated truth---it ain't a pretty sight. It's downright Repulsive actually.

Truth can be used as a WEAPON. NOT Recommended!!! It's Highly prone to backfire and exceedingly difficult to Aim. Seems like with every good discovery, someone tries to make a weapon out of it, doesn't it? It's a shame really... that something so Good should be used to hurt or wound others.

I guess the Value of Truth depends a lot on what we Do with it, wouldn't you Say?

The preceding examples are most likely to occur when EGO tries to use Truth without the added experience of the more mature SOUL or the Guidance of the Indwelling Spirit of God. EGO is rather good at fact finding and acquiring Knowledge and Experience, but it is altogether handicapped when it comes to gaining and using Wisdom or to Living discovered Truth. The Soul must be engaged and the Spirit followed for Wisdom and Truth to serve their intended purpose... to Reveal their True Value.

To the Soul, Truth is the Eternal Lure... the source of Satisfaction and personal Validation... the value and motivator of Experience... the potential of Fulfillment. The Soul does not Fear the Truth, but Seeks it and Embraces it and Incorporates it into a new and higher Appreciation of Life. While EGO may use Truth to Hide behind or to Limit experience, Soul uses Truth to Enhance experience and to open new doors of Discovery.

One can have Knowledge without Truth, but not Truth without knowledge; and one is likely to have only partial Truth with partial knowledge. Neither is available nor Valuable without Experience.

Truth is the Key to Personal Freedom and the Compass that reveals the direction of True Love.

Seek Truth, Find Truth, Experience Truth, Use Truth, Live Truth, Be Truth. Let it Show you the Beauty and Inspire the Goodness of Life... Your life.

Truth---selfish EGO has trouble living With it... Loving Soul has trouble living Without it. Wisdom would suggest we ought to let Soul and Spirit handle Truth... ya Think?

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Do you ever get angry for no apparent reason or for Any Available reason? Is there a real reason... an Underlying reason ya think? I think...

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: James Thurber)
All men should strive to learn before they die, what they are running from, and to, and why.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-131 Section-4)
And this is the sum of duty: Let no man do to another what would be repugnant to himself; cherish no malice, smite not him who smites you, conquer anger with mercy, and vanquish hate by benevolence.

(From: JarEl 2/19/01 - Southern California TeaM)
I am going to change. I am going to start listening to God. I am going to believe that it is possible for me to take control of my life, I have a choice. I am going to help someone else. I see a need, I continually see this need, now I am going to do something about it.

(from: Marion Anderson)
If you have a purpose in which you can believe, there's no end to the amount of things you can accomplish.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-194 Section-3)
Pentecost endowed mortal man with the power to forgive personal injuries, to keep sweet in the midst of the gravest injustice, to remain unmoved in the face of appalling danger, and to challenge the evils of hate and anger by the fearless acts of love and forbearance.

(From: Francis of Assisi)
Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear nor ignorance. Where there is patience and humility, there is neither anger nor vexation. Where there is poverty and joy, there is neither greed nor avarice. Where there is peace and meditation, there is neither anxiety nor doubt.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-149 Section-4)
"Anger is a material manifestation which represents, in a general way, the measure of the failure of the spiritual nature to gain control of the combined intellectual and physical natures. Anger indicates your lack of tolerant brotherly love plus your lack of self-respect and self-control. Anger depletes the health, debases the mind, and handicaps the spirit teacher of man's soul.”

(From: James Thurber)
Let us not look back in anger, or forward with fear, but around in awareness.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-196 Section-3)
Some men's lives are too great and noble to descend to the low level of being merely successful. The animal must adapt itself to the environment, but the religious man transcends his environment and in this way escapes the limitations of the present material world through this insight of divine love. This concept of love generates in the soul of man that superanimal effort to find truth, beauty, and goodness; and when he does find them, he is glorified in their embrace; he is consumed with the desire to live them, to do righteousness.

What is Anger?

Have you ever really thought about it?

Everybody gets angry from time to time... some more Often than others... for various reasons, real or imagined (Imagined I suspect more often than not).

Why do we get Angry ya think?

I used to get angry a lot more often when I was younger. Thank God! And I mean “Thank God” Literally here. It was beginning my Personal, one on One relationship with God that has made All the difference... that has helped me to get less angry and angry less often. I'm not saying I have come anywhere's Near mastering it... Yet... but I DO notice that when I feel Near God, when I feel that Loving and Understanding Presence Radiating Within me, Nothing seems to make me Really angry. Not angry at People anyway. I get Angry at what they do sometimes. I get Angry at the Injustice that I see manifest in the world and in society. But when I remember to Feel God's Presence, God's Love in the moment, then even Those don't make me angry and defiant but rather, sad and determined to try and Do something about it.

There's just a certain kind of Overwhelming Peace and Understanding and Love and Compassion that overrides any trigger to anger when I am Consciously sharing the moment with God---Consciously letting God be the Motivator of all my actions. There's No Fear when I am in that place of Divine Embrace... Anger has no avenue for expression.

It is my continuing experience that where there is no Fear, there is little if any Anger; and where there is God and Love, there is no Fear.

People get angry most often when they are scared... Scared of not being Loved or Appreciated... Scared of Losing something, or having something taken away from them... Scared that what they have come to believe about themselves or about their understanding of their Life might be wrong... Scared of being Vulnerable or unable to control what happens to them.

I'm finding that anger is a pretty good barometer for telling me when I am not presently recognizing God's Presence within myself or within others... when I have neglected for one reason or another to take immediate advantage of God's Everpresent Goodness and Love.         When I feel God, I feel Good. And when I feel Good, I feel Love. And when I feel Love, I feel No anger. When I feel God, I feel no anger. When I feel God Within me, when I feel God's Love and Compassion Flowing Through me, then I find that it is Also difficult for others to be angry when they are Around me. Have you ever noticed that? When you're just Really (what I like to call) “In the Space” of Overflowing Love and Excitement for Life, don't others seem to get Infected with it? Unreasonable Expectations just seem to disappear, and a tangible Acceptance of one another for Who you each Really Are inside in your Souls takes their place. I Love the times when that happens, don't You?

When I catch myself acting angry or when someone else acts angry at or around me, I'm realizing that it is Not so much because of what They are doing as much as it is because of what I am NOT doing... what I Could be doing if I let go of my Own fears and put only Love and Understanding and Compassion in their Place.

What is the Greatest and perhaps Only Answer to Anger?

Why... Love of Course. Don't ya Think?

*******************************************
