Humor of the Week

Mildred, the church gossip and self-appointed arbiter of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business. Several residents were unappreciative of her activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence.

She made a mistake, however, when she accused George, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his pickup truck parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon.

She commented to George and others that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing. George, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just walked away. He didn't explain, defend, or deny, he said nothing.

Later that evening, George quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred's house................and left it there all night.

The Lap-Top Fund - Update
************************
I would Sincerely like to thank those who have already donated toward the purchase of a new Lap-Top Computer for the Church Within! You are so Very Much Appreciated!!!

As you hopefully know by now, we in no way require, nor expect Donations for our Services… any donations are entirely Optional. The 10 year Anniversary of the Church Within will be this coming October 23
rd, and it has Truly been a Labor of Love all along. During that 9+ years, the donations received by the Church Within in any given year have never come Close to covering even the cost of basic operations for the year. Please don't think that this is in any way a complaint… because it is not! I just wanted you to know. We do not do this for donations, we do it because we feel Led to do so… it is an opportunity for us to Serve the Greater Good in such a way as we are able.

An adequate Lap-Top Computer for the Church is something that we cannot in any way afford on our own, but that would truly Enhance our abilities to provide better Service. That is why I have identified this need to those that we serve. I have no expectations… If it is God's will that we have a Lap-Top for our Services, then he will touch the Individual Souls of those who are able to help make it happen.

If you are one of those Souls and wish to help us with this need, you may mail your tax-deductible donation to:

Church Within - LapTop

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Well, it's the First Sunday of February 2005! The usual Winter Weather here in North Idaho has been pretty much non-existent so far. In Pennsylvania, the “Groundhog” is said to have seen his shadow, foretelling continued Winter. Here in the Northwest Inland however, the groundhog was said Not to have seen his shadow, thereby predicting an Early Spring. But…Since groundhogs are not infallible, there really isn't any positive proof one way or the other. I AM looking anxiously forward to Spring and it's new growth though!!

Have you ever been asked to Prove something that is Impossible to prove with material evidence?

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #433, is Proof…

Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-101 Section-1)
True religion is not a system of philosophic belief which can be reasoned out and substantiated by natural proofs, neither is it a fantastic and mystic experience of indescribable feelings of ecstasy which can be enjoyed only by the romantic devotees of mysticism. Religion is not the product of reason, but viewed from within, it is altogether reasonable. Religion is not derived from the logic of human philosophy, but as a mortal experience it is altogether logical. Religion is the experiencing of divinity in the consciousness of a moral being of evolutionary origin; it represents true experience with eternal realities in time, the realization of spiritual satisfactions while yet in the flesh.

(From: Sir Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626)
By far the best proof is experience.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-155 Section-6)
It is not so important that you should know about the fact of God as that you should increasingly grow in the ability to feel the presence of God.
When you once begin to find God in your soul, presently you will begin to discover him in other men's souls and eventually in all the creatures and creations of a mighty universe. But what chance does the Father have to appear as a God of supreme loyalties and divine ideals in the souls of men who give little or no time to the thoughtful contemplation of such eternal realities? While the mind is not the seat of the spiritual nature, it is indeed the gateway thereto.
But do not make the mistake of trying to prove to other men that you have found God; you cannot consciously produce such valid proof, albeit there are two positive and powerful demonstrations of the fact that you are God-knowing, and they are:
        1. The fruits of the spirit of God showing forth in your daily routine life.
        2. The fact that your entire life plan furnishes positive proof that you have unreservedly risked everything you are and have on the adventure of survival after death in the pursuit of the hope of finding the God of eternity, whose presence you have foretasted in time.

(From: Mother Teresa (1910 - 1997)
Whether one is Hindu or a Muslim or a Christian, how you live your life is proof that you are or not fully His. We cannot condemn or judge or pass words that will hurt people. We don't know in what way God is appearing to that soul and what God is drawing that soul to; therefor, who are we to condemn anybody?

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-1 Section-2)
Those who know God have experienced the fact of his presence; such God-knowing mortals hold in their personal experience the only positive proof of the existence of the living God which one human being can offer to another.

(From: Josephine Hart)
We are here to add to the sum of human goodness. To prove the thing exists. And however futile each individual act of courage or generosity, self-sacrifice or grace-it still proves the thing exists. Each act adds to the fund. It needs replenishment.

(From: Ham - 9/12/04– the Nashville TeaM)
Human beings must learn how to trust in God without requiring any specific proof for themselves of his over care. Many human beings, in fact most human beings at this point in your history, are still in the business of requiring proof of God's care in some specific instance. But as you mature in the spirit, you come to see evidence of God's over care constantly around you. No longer is this a matter of praying and receiving some gift. No, it is the process of seeing all of your life as a gift. All of existence is a miracle.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
God cannot be Proved with words.
Love cannot be Proved with words.

I cannot Prove them to You.
You cannot Prove them to Me.

Even our observable Actions cannot Prove them undeniably to any other but our own selves.

And yet… In my own Personal Experience, I have Indisputable Proof of Both.
Don't you as well?

The Evidence is All Around Us… if only we know where to Look!

All of us who are concerned for peace and triumph of reason and justice must be keenly aware how small an influence reason and honest good will exert upon events in the political field.

What is it that truly captures the majority of your Awareness?

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #434, is Awareness…

Quotes
*******
(From: Veronica - 9/7/94– the Volcano, Hawaii TeaM)
You have all been blessed with the magnificent gift of unfettered freedom of will which intensifies the importance of the choices you select in your everyday life. Ponder, for a moment, how many are made thoughtlessly and without awareness and conscious deliberation.
The key to gracious and loving choosing is tenacious adherence to careful selection of action in even seemingly insignificant occurrences of your day. This will not be effortless as consistent consciousness is important during all your waking hours. It does not preclude your opportunities for leisure, humor, and relaxation, as choices are important in all aspects of living in goodness and love.

(From: James Thurber (1894 - 1961)
Let us not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, but around in awareness.

(From: The RSV Bible - Corinthians I 4:4-5)
I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then every man will receive his commendation from God.

(From: Sidney Madwed)
To be healthy, wealthy, happy and successful in any and all areas of your life you need to be aware that you need to think healthy, wealthy, happy and successful thoughts twenty four hours a day and cancel all negative, destructive, fearful and unhappy thoughts. These two types of thought cannot coexist if you want to share in the abundance that surrounds us all.

(From: Veronica - 1/16/94– the Volcano, Hawaii TeaM)
Always focus on a feeling of kinship with everyone you meet, and you will develop the modesty of spirit and nobility of mind that will engender a sensitive awareness of the essence of others.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-16 Section-9)
Human self-consciousness implies the recognition of the reality of selves other than the conscious self and further implies that such awareness is mutual; that the self is known as it knows. This is shown in a purely human manner in man's social life. But you cannot become so absolutely certain of a fellow being's reality as you can of the reality of the presence of God that lives within you.

(From: Barry Lopez, Arctic Dreams)
How is one to live a moral and compassionate existence when one is fully aware of the blood, the horror inherent in life, when one finds darkness not only in one's culture but within oneself? If there is a stage at which an individual life becomes truly adult, it must be when one grasps the irony in its unfolding and accepts responsibility for a life lived in the midst of such paradox. One must live in the middle of contradiction, because if all contradiction were eliminated at once, life would collapse. There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions. You continue to live them out, making your life a worthy expression of leaning into the light.

(From: Veronica - 9/7/94– the Volcano, Hawaii TeaM)
My advice is to practice awareness in all your moments, even in the most mundane of tasks. If you continue to seek the Father thoughtfully, your gratification in your successful selections will be shared with the Father; and you will feel immediate recognition of a wise step taken.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-40 Section-5)
And then you are made spiritually aware of the great truth which your faith may grasp--sonship with the eternal God!

(From: Donella Meadows, The Global Citizen)
Your paradigm is so intrinsic to your mental process that you are hardly aware of its existence, until you try to communicate with someone with a different paradigm.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-6)
The marks of human response to the religious impulse embrace the qualities of nobility and grandeur. The sincere religionist is conscious of universe citizenship and is aware of making contact with sources of superhuman power. He is thrilled and energized with the assurance of belonging to a superior and ennobled fellowship of the sons of God. The consciousness of self-worth has become augmented by the stimulus of the quest for the highest universe objectives--supreme goals.

(From: Henry Miller (1891 - 1980)
The aim of life is to live, and to live means to be aware, joyously, drunkenly, serenely, divinely aware.

The Sermon
***********
The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I feel alone.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I feel sad.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I feel hurt.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I feel afraid.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I feel angry for any reason.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I am feeling frustrated.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I am feeling selfish.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I am struggling with a choice or decision.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I don't Know the Right thing to say.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I don't Know the Right thing to Do.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I am not being my most loving self.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I am feeling overly intelligent or mature or wise.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I am feeling like I already have all the answers that I need for my personal growth.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I am feeling like I have all the answers that everyone Else needs for Their personal growth.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I am not seeing All others as my equal and beloved Brothers and Sisters.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I do not automatically Know the most God-like thing to do.

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I do not automatically Do the most God-like things I Know.

There are likely other times I may really Need God as well. Suffice it to say that…

The Only times that I really Need God…

…are in those moments when I am not Presently and Actively Aware of, and in personal Contact With God… And…in those moments when I forget that God's Loving Presence is Always “Here”---With me Now---if only I can or will be, Aware of (and humbly thankful For), the fact.

Truly, those ARE the ONLY times that I really Need God because…
…all of the Other times, I already Have God---Right Here With me. Come to ponder it though… I really do Need God in my Awareness ALL the time

Being Presently Aware of the Presence of God…
Does anything else really Matter?

In religion and politics, people's beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second hand, and without examination.
Mark Twain (1835 - 1910)

********************************************
Welcome by: Pastor Daniel
************************
Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Today's Quotes follow today's Sermon… it just seemed more “right.”

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #435, is Truth in Religion…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
The first inclination upon personally recognizing a “Piece” of the Truth---in a “Scripture,” or in a Book, or in Historical Words of Wisdom (in this case, referring to history that is anytime prior to Now), Or… in one of those Personal Moments of Enlightenment---is to feel, “I have Found THE Truth!” …which not uncommonly precipitates into “I have Found the WHOLE Truth!” …and unfortunately, sometimes develops into the Fog of “And, I have Found Nothing BUT The Truth!” These are really quite Natural human assumptions since, Discovering Truth… discovering More of The Creator… is quite likely the most Overwhelming and Spiritually Exhilarating experience a human being can Have… an “Oh My God!!!” moment. It can change your whole outlook on life in that single Moment. At some point or other we've All had at least one of those, if not countless numbers of them. You know “The Feeling” …right? “THIS is IT!”

The Next tendency is to feel that Everyone else should embrace that truth! Ahh… Then the world would be a better place, wouldn't it?? “If Only Everybody would…”

Once one realizes that “everybody” Won't, it isn't uncommon to try and shrink the playing field to: “If only You would…” or “You should…”

It's the Wise individual that eventually comes to the conclusion that “It is what “I” should do.” “Not everyone else, not Anyone else… ME… this Truth is for Me to personally embrace!” It is only then that the Real work begins---Personal Discovery… Personal transformation… Personal Growth.

People are attracted to particular and various Theologies/Philosophies/Belief Systems because they have personally Found something there that has Profoundly touched their Soul and their Spirit. I like to call it “A Taste of God.” It can be a Taste of Truth, a Taste of Beauty, a Taste of Goodness, a Taste of Love… in a real sense, it is a Taste of the Supreme/Almighty/Eternal/Absolute/Infinite God/Father/Mother/Allah/Jehovah/Creator/Source/I AM. God is Not beyond human Experience… only beyond the human intellectual capacity of full comprehension.

During my life of 51+ years, I have personally explored Catholicism, most of the different sects that make up Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, “The Teachings of Don Juan”, Ba'hai, various sects of Buddhism, the Tao, and quite a number of “Ancient Age” and “New Age” spiritual philosophies and theologies. Every Single One of them gave me “A Taste of God.” Most gave me More than just a single taste… and each gave me a Unique and Different taste.

But that ANY of them should feel that they are the “Whole Banquet” or the “Only Banquet,” is to me quite Ludicrous. It is That attitude that begets so called, “Holy” wars, separatism, fanaticism, racism, hatred, selfishness, and all of the other non-Godlike things that tear this world apart.

Should we not Rejoice that another has Found God in their Own way… just as each of us has found God in Our Own Way? It is nothing more than Pure Egotism that makes people bicker and argue and fight over the How. Can we not all have Unity of Ideals without demanding uniformity of ideas?

Seek God. The Infinite Creator can be found Wherever a person Sincerely Looks! And for God's Sake (your own as well)… enjoy the Banquet!!!

Quotes
*******
(From: The RSV Bible - Timothy II 3:1-5)

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of stress. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, inhuman, implacable, slanderers, profligates, fierce, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding the form of religion but denying the power of it. Avoid such people.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-5 Section-5)
Religious experience, being essentially spiritual, can never be fully understood by the material mind; hence the function of theology, the psychology of religion. The essential doctrine of the human realization of God creates a paradox in finite comprehension. It is well-nigh impossible for human logic and finite reason to harmonize the concept of divine immanence, God within and a part of every individual, with the idea of God's transcendence, the divine domination of the universe of universes. These two essential concepts of Deity must be unified in the faith-grasp of the concept of the transcendence of a personal God and in the realization of the indwelling presence of a fragment of that God in order to justify intelligent worship and validate the hope of personality survival. The difficulties and paradoxes of religion are inherent in the fact that the realities of religion are utterly beyond the mortal capacity for intellectual comprehension.

(From: Quran 2:263)
There shall be no compulsion in religion.

(From: Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)
My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind.

(From: Dalai Lama)
This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.

(From: Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865)
When I do good, I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad, and that is my religion.

(From: Muhammed Ali)
Lakes, rivers, streams...all are water and all travel to the same destination. So it is with religion.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-103 Section-1)
Religion is primarily a pursuit of values, and then there formulates a system of interpretative beliefs. It is much easier for men to agree on religious values--goals--than on beliefs--interpretations. And this explains how religion can agree on values and goals while exhibiting the confusing phenomenon of maintaining a belief in hundreds of conflicting beliefs--creeds. This also explains why a given person can maintain his religious experience in the face of giving up or changing many of his religious beliefs. Religion persists in spite of revolutionary changes in religious beliefs. Theology does not produce religion; it is religion that produces theologic philosophy.

(From: D. H. Lawrence (1885 - 1930)
It is a fine thing to establish one's own religion in one's heart, not to be dependent on tradition and second-hand ideals. Life will seem to you, later, not a lesser, but a greater thing.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-103 Section-9)
When theology masters religion, religion dies; it becomes a doctrine instead of a life. The mission of theology is merely to facilitate the self-consciousness of personal spiritual experience. Theology constitutes the religious effort to define, clarify, expound, and justify the experiential claims of religion, which, in the last analysis, can be validated only by living faith.

(From: Bhagavad Gita (250 BC - 250 AD)
As a man can drink water from any side of a full tank, so the skilled theologian can wrest from any scripture that which will serve his purpose.

(From: Mohammed Neguib)
Religion is a candle inside a multicolored lantern. Everyone looks through a particular color, but the candle is always there.

(From: Elyon - 7/18/04– the North Idaho TeaM)
Faith is willful directionalization. It is the assertion of personality. It is two directional: One way is toward the Father/Source for deeper connection, for that divine embrace. The other direction is the faith/force of conviction of having resided with the Father. One applies this association to any life circumstance. Faith is spiritual movement, and while associated with systems of theology and supported by history of experience, it is a form of conviction beyond the mind. It is the activation of spirit. When the human being seeks faith, that search soon is transformed into a search for God. Faith is not found; faith becomes, as that search begins. When God is found, there one beholds one's faith.

(From: The Buddha)
Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

A priest asked: What is Fate, Master?
And he answered:
It is that which gives a beast of burden its reason for existence.
It is that which men in former times had to bear upon their backs.
It is that which has caused nations to build byways from City to City
upon which carts and coaches pass, and alongside which inns have come
to be built to stave off Hunger, Thirst and Weariness.
And that is Fate? said the priest.
Fate ... I thought you said Freight, responded the Master.
That's all right, said the priest. I wanted to know what Freight was too.

(From: Dale Carnegie)

One of the most appalling comments on our present way of life is that half of all the beds in our hospitals are reserved for patients with nervous and mental troubles, patients who have collapsed under the crushing burden of accumulated yesterdays and fearful tomorrows. Yet a vast majority of those people would be walking the streets today, leading happy, useful lives, if they had only heeded the words of Jesus: "Have no anxiety about the morrow"; or the words of Sir William Osler; "Live in day-tight compartments.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 11:28-30)
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-137 Section-8)
"I have come to preach the glad tidings of the kingdom. I have not come to add to the heavy burdens of those who would enter this kingdom. I proclaim the new and better way, and those who are able to enter the coming kingdom shall enjoy the divine rest. And whatever it shall cost you in the things of the world, no matter what price you may pay to enter the kingdom of heaven, you shall receive manyfold more of joy and spiritual progress in this world, and in the age to come eternal life.

(From: James Gordon Gilkey)
Most of us think ourselves as standing wearily and helplessly at the center of a circle bristling with tasks, burdens, problems, annoyance, and responsibilities which are rushing in upon us. At every moment we have a dozen different things to do, a dozen problems to solve, a dozen strains to endure. We see ourselves as overdriven, overburdened, overtired. This is a common mental picture and it is totally false. No one of us, however crowded his life, has such an existence. What is the true picture of your life? Imagine that there is an hour glass on your desk. Connecting the bowl at the top with the bowl at the bottom is a tube so thin that only one grain of sand can pass through it at a time. That is the true picture of your life, even on a super busy day, The crowded hours come to you always one moment at a time. That is the only way they can come. The day may bring many tasks, many problems, strains, but invariably they come in single file. You want to gain emotional poise? Remember the hourglass, the grains of sand dropping one by one.

(From: Alfred A. Montapert)
Before every action ask yourself. Will this bring more monkeys on my back. Will the result of my action be a blessing or a heavy burden?

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-156 Section-5)
If you would be truly triumphant over the temptations of the lesser and lower nature, you must come to that place of spiritual advantage where you have really and truly developed an actual interest in, and love for, those higher and more idealistic forms of conduct which your mind is desirous of substituting for these lower and less idealistic habits of behavior that you recognize as temptation. You will in this way be delivered through spiritual transformation rather than be increasingly overburdened with the deceptive suppression of mortal desires. The old and the inferior will be forgotten in the love for the new and the superior. Beauty is always triumphant over ugliness in the hearts of all who are illuminated by the love of truth. There is mighty power in the expulsive energy of a new and sincere spiritual affection. And again I say to you, be not overcome by evil but rather overcome evil with good."

(From: Plato (427 BC - 347 BC)
He who is of calm and happy nature will hardly feel the pressure of age, but to him who is of an opposite disposition youth and age are equally a burden.

(From: R. A. Salvatore, Sojourn)
Guilt is always a self-imposed burden, but it is not always rightly imposed.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-156 Section-5)
Do not become discouraged by the discovery that you are human. Human nature may tend toward evil, but it is not inherently sinful. Be not downcast by your failure wholly to forget some of your regrettable experiences. The mistakes which you fail to forget in time will be forgotten in eternity. Lighten your burdens of soul by speedily acquiring a long-distance view of your destiny, a universe expansion of your career.

(From: R. A. Salvatore, Sojourn)
Most self-imposed burdens are founded on misperceptions. We - at least we of sincere character - always judge ourselves by stricter standards than we expect others to abide by. It is a curse, I suppose, or a blessing, depending on how one views it... Take it as a blessing, my friend, an inner calling that forces you to strive to unattainable heights.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-48 Section-6)
You will learn that you increase your burdens and decrease the likelihood of success by taking yourself too seriously.

(From: Ham - 1991– the Woods Cross TeaM)
Much of the burden of life may easily be transferred to the Indwelling Spirit who, in His infinite wisdom, is unerring in His guidance. Much of the burden of life is felt but is illusory. Much of your earthly anxieties are absolutely needless. May I repeat, much, in fact most, of your earthly anxiety is needless, indeed, pointless. You must be aware of your indwelling spiritual guidance. He is in control of your life; you need fear nothing. Many of the calamitous misfortunes are as easily dealt with through laughter as through worry.

(From: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827)
I wish you music to help with the burdens of life ,and to help you release your happiness to others.

(From: Ham - 1991– the Woods Cross TeaM)
Recreation and lighthearted human interaction are essential ingredients in the well-balanced personality. Happiness and mirth are a release valve for tension and are conducive to becoming a more easily likable person. Those who take themselves overly seriously and cannot find the joy in living are very sad to behold. Their life is monotonous, boring, and tending toward the material, that is, being dragged down to worry and needless anxiety. Happy is he who can find the cheerful side of looking at reality. This greatly lightens the burden of daily life.

Dear God,
Help me to lessen the burdens of others rather than add to them.
