A very old man lay dying in his bed. In death's doorway, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookie wafting up the stairs.

He gathered his remaining strength and lifted himself from the bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort forced himself down the stairs, gripping the railing with both hands.

With labored breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death's agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven.

There, spread out on newspapers on the kitchen table were literally hundreds of his favorite chocolate chip cookies.

Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man?

Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself toward the table. The aged and withered hand, shaking, made its way to a cookie at the edge of the table, when he was suddenly smacked with a spatula by his wife.

"Stay out of those," she said. "They're for the funeral.

Ever feel like giving up? Have you?

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #694, is Surrender…

Quotes
*******
(From: J. Michael Straczynski, Babylon 5)

There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope. The death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender.

(From: Michael J. Fox (1961 - ), in "Saving Milly" by Morton Kondrake)
One's dignity may be assaulted, vandalized and cruelly mocked, but cannot be taken away unless it is surrendered.

(From: Irving Wallace)
To be one's self, and unafraid whether right or wrong, is more admirable than the easy cowardice of surrender to conformity.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-91 Section-9)
You must surrender every wish of mind and every craving of soul to the transforming embrace of spiritual growth.

(From: The Book of Runes - #4 Separation / Retreat / Inheritance (Othila)
Such a surrender can be particularly difficult when that which you are called upon to give up or abandon is an aspect of your behavior, or some part of your cultural inheritance. For then you must look closely at what, until now, you have proudly claimed as your birthright. Whether it is your attachment to your position in society, to the work you do, or even to your beliefs about your own nature, the separation called for now will free you to become more truly who you are.

(From: Anne Morrow Lindbergh)
If you surrender completely to the moments as they pass, you live more richly those moments.

(From: Virgil (70 BC - 19 BC), Eclogues)
Love conquers all things; let us too surrender to Love.

(From: The ASB Bible - Corinthians I 13:1-7)
IF I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-133 Section-7)
But the survival character of a soul is not fostered by attempting to secure peace of mind at any price, by the surrender of noble aspirations, and by the compromise of spiritual ideals; rather is such peace attained by the stalwart assertion of the triumph of that which is true, and this victory is achieved in the overcoming of evil with the potent force of good.

(From: Miguel De Cervantes (1547 - 1616), Don Quixote de la Mancha)
When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Perhaps to be too practical may be madness. To surrender dreams, this may be madness. To seek treasures where there is only trash...Too much sanity may be madness, and maddest of all is to see life as it is and not as it should be.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-111 Section-5)
Mortals live in God, and so God has willed to live in mortals. As men trust themselves to him, so has he--and first--trusted a part of himself to be with men; has consented to live in men and to indwell men subject to the human will.
Peace in this life, survival in death, perfection in the next life, service in eternity--all these are achieved (in spirit) now when the creature personality consents--chooses--to subject the creature will to the Father's will. And already has the Father chosen to make a fragment of himself subject to the will of the creature personality.
Such a creature choice is not a surrender of will. It is a consecration of will, an expansion of will, a glorification of will, a perfecting of will; and such choosing raises the creature will from the level of temporal significance to that higher estate wherein the personality of the creature son communes with the personality of the spirit Father.
This choosing of the Father's will is the spiritual finding of the spirit Father by mortal man, even though an age must pass before the creature son may actually stand in the factual presence of God on Paradise. This choosing does not so much consist in the negation of creature will--"Not my will but yours be done"--as it consists in the creature's positive affirmation: "It is my will that your will be done."

The Sermon

Surrender…

…your immaturity, but never your Youth.
…your perceptions, but never your Ideals.
…your control over others, but never your Self Control.
…your power, but never your Strength.
…your wishes, but never your Hopes.
…your doctrines, but never your Principles.
…your opinions, but never your Convictions.
…your human beliefs, but never your Soul's Faith.

Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's and unto God the things that are God's
But never Surrender unto Caesar, only unto God. God will never require you to surrender who you are… God Made you who you are… For God's Sake!!!!

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-133 Section-2)
The loving care and consideration which a man is willing to bestow upon his wife and their children are the measure of that man's attainment of the higher levels of creative and spiritual self-consciousness.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-142 Section-2)
…a good and true father not only loves his family as a whole--as a family--but he also truly loves and affectionately cares for each individual member."

(From: Wayne Dyer)
Love is the ability and willingness to allow those that you care for to be what they choose for themselves without any insistence that they satisfy you.

(From: Clay Aiken)
I think that is what love is - when it's unimaginable to be away from the person, and you care about what makes them happy more than what makes you happy.

(From: Jane Goodall (1934 -)
Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help.

(From: Solonia 3/5/2004 – the Garden TeaM)
Being in service to another through the gift of offering comfort may be as simple as, a genuine understanding smile, a look of recognition, of caring, a look of compassion, an acknowledgment of their service or their value.

(From: Randy K. Milholland, Something Positive Comic, 12-09-05)
Why do we have to wait for special moments to say nice things or tell people we care about them?

(From: Trey Parker and Matt Stone, South Park 1998)
Family isn't about whose blood you have. It's about who you care about.

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work.
As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was.
The girl replied, 'I'm drawing God..'
The teacher paused and said, 'But no one knows what God looks like.'
Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, 'They will in a minute.'

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

In reality, just about every Sunday Service I do is about Love in one form or another. It has been a while though since I have actually used the word “Love” as the Topic and search word for quotes. The number of results was staggering and so I qualified my search a bit and looked for quotes that contained the words, “Love is” and while there were still pages and pages and pages of quotes to peruse in order to find those I used today, it only took me hours instead of the months it might have taken me to read them all and choose the applicable ones. So…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #696, is “Love is”…

Quotes

(From: Martha Beck)
Whoever said love is blind is dead wrong. Love is the only thing that lets us see each other with the remotest accuracy…

(From: The RSV Bible - Corinthians I 13:4-7)
Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(From: Kahlil Gibran (1883 - 1931), The Prophet)
Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-56 Section-10)
Love is the desire to do good to others.

(From: Deepak Chopra, The Path to Love)
The spiritual meaning of love is measured by what it can do. Love is meant to heal. Love is meant to renew. Love is meant to bring us closer to God.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-117 Section-6)
All true love is from God, and man receives the divine affection as he himself bestows this love upon his fellows. Love is dynamic. It can never be captured; it is alive, free, thrilling, and always moving. Man can never take the love of the Father and imprison it within his heart. The Father's love can become real to mortal man only by passing through that man's personality as he in turn bestows this love upon his fellows.

(From: Paulo Coelho, By the River Piedra I sat down and wept y)
To love is to commune with another person and to discover in him or her a divine spark.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-156 Section-6)
Love is never self-seeking, and it cannot be self-bestowed. Divine love cannot be self-contained; it must be unselfishly bestowed.

(From: Bertrand Russell (1872 - 1970), Conquest of Happiness)
Of all forms of caution, caution in love is perhaps the most fatal to true happiness.

(From: Franklin P. Jones)
Love doesn't make the world go round. Love is what makes the ride worthwhile.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
He who is in love is wise and is becoming wiser, sees newly every time he looks at the object beloved, drawing from it with his eyes and his mind those virtues which it possesses.

(From: Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982), Atlas Shrugged)
Love is our response to our highest values. Love is self-enjoyment. The noblest love is born out of admiration of another's values.

(From: Anna Louise Strong)
To fall in love is easy, even to remain in it is not difficult; our human loneliness is cause enough. But it is a hard quest worth making to find a comrade through whose steady presence one becomes steadily the person one desires to be.

(From: Paul Tillich (1886 - 1965)
The first duty of love is to listen.

(From: Francois de La Rochefoucauld (1613 - 1680)
The pleasure of love is in loving.

(From: Karen Sunde)
To love is to receive a glimpse of heaven.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-4)
Love is infectious, and when human devotion is intelligent and wise, love is more catching than hate. But only genuine and unselfish love is truly contagious. If each mortal could only become a focus of dynamic affection, this benign virus of love would soon pervade the sentimental emotion-stream of humanity to such an extent that all civilization would be encompassed by love, and that would be the realization of the brotherhood of man.

(From: The ASB Bible - John I 4:7)
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-192 Section-2)
“Devote your life to proving that love is the greatest thing in the world. It is the love of God that impels men to seek salvation. Love is the ancestor of all spiritual goodness, the essence of the true and the beautiful."

The senselessness of much that so often causes us serious concern, the joy at discovering the unimportance of much of our serious personal anxiety. We are most appreciative of this phase of humor when we are best able to discount the anxieties of the present in favor of the certainties of the future.
(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-48 Section-4)

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray:
'Take only ONE . God is watching.'
Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written and placed by them a note:
'Take all you want.. God is watching the apples.'

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

(From: William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616)
All the world's a stage, and all the men and women are merely players.
[I think that perhaps William was describing a different kind of stage than I… or maybe not…]

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #697, is Stages and Phases…

********************************************
Quotes
******
(From: George Santayana (1863 - 1952), The Life of Reason, Volume 1, 1905)

In the first stage of life the mind is frivolous and easily distracted, it misses progress by failing in consecutiveness and persistence. This is the condition of children and barbarians, in which instinct has learned nothing from experience.

(From: Abraham 3/7/99 – the Woods Cross TeaM)
There are phases in mortal living that complete your levels of growth. There is a time when the infant knows he is well finished being a baby. There is a time when the adult understands their years of youth are done.

(From: Barry Lopez, Arctic Dreams)
If there is a stage at which an individual life becomes truly adult, it must be when one grasps the irony in its unfolding and accepts responsibility for a life lived in the midst of such paradox. One must live in the middle of contradiction, because if all contradiction were eliminated at once life would collapse. There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions. You continue to live them out, making your life a worthy expression of leaning into the light.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-12 Section-)9
Every phase of personality experience on every successive level of universe progression swarms with clues to the discovery of alluring personal realities. Man's true destiny consists in the creation of new and spirit goals and then in responding to the cosmic allurements of such supernal goals of nonmaterial value.

(From: Brown)
No man with a man's heart in him, gets far on his way without some bitter, soul searching disappointment. Happy he who is brave enough to push on another stage of the journey, and rest where there are living springs of water, and three score and ten palms.

(From: Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882)
The highest possible stage in moral culture is when we recognize that we ought to control our thoughts.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-130 Section-4)
Knowledge is a possession of the mind; truth an experience of the soul, the progressing self. Knowledge is a function of the nonspiritual level; truth is a phase of the mind-spirit level of the universes. The eye of the material mind perceives a world of factual knowledge; the eye of the spiritualized intellect discerns a world of true values. These two views, synchronized and harmonized, reveal the world of reality, wherein wisdom interprets the phenomena of the universe in terms of progressive personal experience.

(From: Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 - 1860)
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

(From: Betty Friedan (1921 - 2006)
Aging is not 'lost youth' but a new stage of opportunity and strength.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-115 Section-3)
From a circumscribed view there are, indeed, many ends, many terminations of activities, but from a larger viewpoint on a higher universe level, there are no endings, merely transitions from one phase of development to another.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Many of the Stages of this human life are identifiable by us. The Infancy Stage, the Toddler Stage, Childhood, Adolescence, Early Adulthood… all different Stages played out upon the stage of life. We each of course, go through a variety of Stages throughout our entire lifetime… it is unavoidable, inevitable. Human Life is but a Stage not merely whereon, but wherein we learn, and grow and hopefully, eventually mature to some greater or lesser degree. We carry things forward from one Stage to another… Memories, Knowledge and Wisdom hopefully, rather than just material things. Material things are fine of course until they become clutter or baggage… or walls.

Personal Phases are perhaps a little less definable than are the Stages. Often many Phases go into the making up of a Stage. Phases overlap. Phases are layered upon one another, and usually they are indistinguishable from one another until one of them ends. There may indeed be layers upon layers upon layers of Phases all active and in play at the very same time. Doesn't it frequently seem like we are always in preparation for the next, or perhaps a future Phase of our life? What's That all about?

Phases may last days, months, years, decades… truly the entire human lifetime is a Phase of existence. Often it is possible to look back upon one's life and to recognize a specific experience as being the end of a particular Phase… “Oh yeah. That was the end of That Phase!” Perhaps it is only the end of a Phase that alerts us to the fact that we were actually in one.

Stages may pass without specific incident and without noticeable distress, but the end of a Phase is usually not a pleasurable experience… in fact I cannot remember one ever being so, can you? Do you ever notice that the death of one Phase is always the birth of another and that a certain level of pain and/or struggle is always involved? Birth can be the most painful Stage of a Phase… yet it is the pain of the death of a Phase that is remembered rather than the pain of it's birth. Why is that do you think?

We commonly think of birth as preceding death. But as we look at the many varied Phases of our life experiences, we must logically admit to the reality that death just as dependably precedes birth. Maybe it is the death of the old that Is the Birth of the New… now There's something to think about…
