The Sermon

Enthusiasm is very much like a Light going on in the darkness. I must say truly, that in my own life, Enthusiasm is most certainly what puts light into my own periods of darkness.

On a personal level…
Enthusiasm is a tonic for despair.
Enthusiasm is the cure for apathy.
Enthusiasm is a wave that may be ridden.
Enthusiasm is soaring on outstretched wings.

But Enthusiasm is difficult to maintain when one feels oppressed, hopeless, demoralized. Where does Enthusiasm come from then, when all seems stacked against you? Where can I get it once I feel I have lost it? An interesting predicament when one is stuck in it, is it not? Often it must seem to come from an outside source that connects strongly with our own Inner Source.

I think that for Enthusiasm to be truly effective, that it must have a sense of the Spiritual about it… Not so much in the theological sense as in the inspirational aspect of it and the feeling of it being on a higher plane, above the fray so to speak.

To me, actual Light producing Enthusiasm must also be accompanied by a sincere and genuine humility, and awe that you have been allowed to participate in it, and by the unquenchable desire to share it, out of pure inner Joy. Enthusiasm of this sort is catching… is contagious… is infectious. Enthusiasm of this caliber is based in Love… Pure, and simple.

The Sermon

Last week's Service was about Enthusiasm. Enthusiasm often exerts a great deal of influence in the achievement of Personal Effectiveness, today's topic… and yet enthusiasm by itself is not equivalent to a person's being personally Effective… it only goes so far before it must be augmented with Good Judgment, Compassion, Wisdom, and the true Spirit of Cooperation. At least this is true if the Effectiveness one desires is based in Unity rather than in division. It takes no great skill to be effective as a divider, though some are much more experienced at it than others. Being Personally Effective at creating Unity amid diversity though… that is a task that requires not only a great deal of skill, but also Empathy, Respect, Selflessness and Understanding.

That said, Personal Effectiveness cannot be measured by material standards except as it may relate specifically to material results. Spiritual Effectiveness can truly be measured in it's entirety only by God. What may be considered ineffective in the Material realm, could very well be considered Supremely Effective in the Divine. Intent, attitude and the degree of unselfish Love may wholly override any apparent lack of material results. One fleeting moment of Genuine Compassion on the part of any individual at any moment in time, could change the course of human history… and only God would be the wiser regarding the Effectiveness of that moment.

In the personal quest to discover and live the Will of God, it is Love that most Effectively propels one toward the realization of that Divine and Worthy Goal.

Seek Truth, Appreciate Beauty, Realize and Achieve Goodness… In and For Love.

There is no greater way to be Truly Effective.

The Sermon

Life Is. But a Dream…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #587, is “The Dream…

When I was very young, and I sang the song “Row, Row, Row Your Boat,” it was my understanding that the words to the song were inferring that Life was perhaps not actually real, but rather, a Dream. That it was somehow something we might wake up From, rather than Something we would “Wake Up To.”

Remember the Song?
[Since these Services reach many different People, in many different Countries, and with many different Cultural backgrounds, I thought it might be best to share the words to the song immediately after this little “aside” in case someone really Didn't remember the song. There is only one verse to the song, and it is repeated over and over and over again… sometimes to the point of… “Alright, Alright… Enough already!” ;-) ]

“Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.”

So it Hit me this morning a little differently… a Dream seems to me, to be what Life is all About. We all have a dream.

There are certain Generic Dreams that most people share…
The Dream for:
Success,
Comfort,
Peace…

There are also Conjoint Dreams…
Our Dream (depending of course upon who the “Our” is).

But then there is the Personal Dream… Your Dream, My Dream, His Dream, Her Dream…
Often there is a certain sense of Unity in the category of Personal Dreams, though obviously Not a feeling of Uniformity. We like to believe that our Individual Personal Dream is Unique, One of a Kind, our Own… and in fact, it is Exactly that.

Now, one might argue that our Personal Dreams are not all that different from one another… that they are basically the Same as everyone else's… and while this may be true in the Universal Perspective, or “Grand Scheme” of things, it is the Individual Component Parts---Your Dream, My Dream, Everyone's Dream---that in Unity helps to make All of Our Dreams a Reality.

My Own Dream remains incomplete as long as Yours goes unfulfilled. Your Dream is less than fully achieved as long as your neighbor's Dream remains unrealized.

I believe that our Purpose here on this Earth, that our Individual Personal Legacy to the planet of our nativity, that the Foundation of our Lives in the Life beyond this mortal one, is the Pursuit of that Unique Facet of our Inner Being… our Individual Personal Dream.

Let no one crush it… let none drive it from you… let neither apathy, nor despair, nor disappointment, nor even the seeming Enormity of it, deter you from the path of it's achievement.

Education will jump to new levels of value with the passing of the purely profit-motivated system of economics. Education has too long been localistic, militaristic, ego exalting, and success seeking; it must eventually become world-wide, idealistic, self-realizing, and cosmic grasping.

Human beings are easily seduced by slight distortions of the truth. It is easy for human beings to believe that slight distortion in which the ego is inflated where one feels more powerful or knowledgeable, richer, more beautiful, smarter than one really is. Embracing the truth is hard medicine. Embracing the reality of one's own smallness does not seem to be a source of comfort. Comfort comes from believing that you are more than you are.         Aside from all that is superself in the experience of praying, it should be remembered that ethical prayer is a splendid way to elevate one's ego and reinforce the self for better living and higher attainment. Prayer induces the human ego to look both ways for help: for material aid to the subconscious reservoir of mortal experience, for inspiration and guidance to the superconscious borders of the contact of the material with the spiritual, with the Mystery Monitor.

        Prayer, even as a purely human practice, a dialogue with one's alter ego, constitutes a technique of the most efficient approach to the realization of those reserve powers of human nature which are stored and conserved in the unconscious realms of the human mind. Prayer is a sound psychologic practice, aside from its religious implications and its spiritual significance. It is a fact of human experience that most persons, if sufficiently hard pressed, will pray in some way to some source of help.

A self that is only differentiated - not integrated - may attain great individual accomplishments, but risks being mired in self-centered egotism. It is Ego that imprisons us, holds us back, relentlessly bound to the past… fearful of the future, of the unknown, untried, un-experienced… Terrified that the failures in the past will not allow the Successes of the Future.

It is the Soul that Sets us free, urges us forward, allows us to create a better Future for ourselves and for others… Learning and gaining Wisdom from the past in the quest for Augmentation and Development and Growth.

It is our choice as to which we will give our attention and our support.

Which will you Choose?
