(From:
Elizabeth Aston, The Exploits & Adventures of Miss Alethea Darcy, 2005)

You can't jump down the stairs in one leap, however much you might wish to, and you even more surely can't jump up it, but one step and then the next and there you are, at the top or the bottom and not a bit out of breath or discomposed.

(From: The Work of the Chariot)
When a man takes one step toward God, God takes more steps toward that man than there are sands in the worlds of time.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-34 Section-6)
The Spirit never drives, only leads. If you are a willing learner, if you want to attain spirit levels and reach divine heights, if you sincerely desire to reach the eternal goal, then the divine Spirit will gently and lovingly lead you along the pathway of sonship and spiritual progress. Every step you take must be one of willingness, intelligent and cheerful co-operation. The domination of the Spirit is never tainted with coercion nor compromised by compulsion.

(From: Solonia 2/28/04 – the Garden TeaM)
Always is there a gift in the process, if you can but recognize it and claim it. Never will your sincere steps lead you into a situation in where there is Not a divine gift from our beloved Creator, but discovering the Truth-truly discovering Father's Will-must be your motivation if you are to greatly benefit from the experience.

(From: Oprah Winfrey)
The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but significance - and then even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning.

(From: Virgil (70 BC - 19 BC), Aeneid)
It is easy to go down into Hell; night and day, the gates of dark Death stand wide; but to climb back again, to retrace one's steps to the upper air - there's the rub, the task.

(From: Richard Bach, The Bridge Across Forever)
The events we bring upon ourselves, no matter how unpleasant, are necessary in order to learn what we need to learn; whatever steps we take, they're necessary to reach the places we've chosen to go.

(From: Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890)
Well, the fact is that one cannot retrace one's steps, and the steps one has taken greatly influence the future.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-184 Section-2)
It requires a great and noble character, having started out wrong, to turn about and go right. All too often one's own mind tends to justify continuance in the path of error when once it is entered upon.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-131 Section-7)
Every time man yields to anxiety, he takes one step away from the leading of the spirit of his heart.' Pride obscures God. If you would obtain heavenly help, put away your pride; every hair of pride shuts off saving light, as it were, by a great cloud. If you are not right on the inside, it is useless to pray for that which is on the outside. 'If I hear your prayers, it is because you come before me with a clean heart, free from falsehood and hypocrisy, with a soul which reflects truth like a mirror.'”

(From: Matsuo Basho)
Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the men of old; seek what they sought.

(From: Al Bernstein)
Success is often the result of taking a misstep in the right direction.

(From: Anne Sullivan)
People seldom see the halting and painful steps by which the most insignificant success is achieved.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-117 Section-6)
But no God-knowing mortal can ever be lonely in his journey through the cosmos, for he knows that the Father walks beside him each step of the way, while the very way that he is traversing is the presence of the Supreme.

(From: George Konrad)
Courage is an accumulation of small steps.

(From:
Michael Bridge)

When our eyes see our hands doing the work of our hearts, the circle of Creation is completed inside us, the doors of our souls fly open, and love steps forth to heal everything in sight.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-106 Section-9)
To material, evolutionary, finite creatures, a life predicated on the living of the Father's will leads directly to the attainment of spirit supremacy in the personality arena and brings such creatures one step nearer the comprehension of the Father-Infinite. Such a Father life is one predicated on truth, sensitive to beauty, and dominated by goodness. Such a God-knowing person is inwardly illuminated by worship and outwardly devoted to the wholehearted service of the universal brotherhood of all personalities, a service ministry which is filled with mercy and motivated by love, while all these life qualities are unified in the evolving personality on ever-ascending levels of cosmic wisdom, self-realization, God-finding, and Father worship.

(From: Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965)
Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.

(From: Friedrich Von Schlegel)
In actual life every great enterprise begins with and takes its first forward step in faith.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Most have heard the term, “…three steps forward, two steps back…” You have, right? What does that mean to You?

In my youth I remember hearing it in reference to, just not being able to get ahead… as if something is constantly there, dragging you backward as soon as you progress a few steps and start feeling pretty good about how you are doing. Like… you work So Hard to get somewhere and then Somehow you find yourself almost back to where you started. The reasoning was most often materially focused at the time.

At some point the statement “…three steps forward, two steps back…” started seeming quite applicable to spiritual growth and progress as well. You discover a Spiritual Truth that really means something special to you, and your perspective on life itself changes… you feel excited and energized! “I Finally Got It!!” After a short or perhaps a seemingly long period of time you find yourself saying, or at least thinking, “How did I get back Here?” And then after unsuccessfully trying and trying to get that “feeling” back again, you wonder if maybe you really didn't get it before…that you imagined it all. The same steps that first got you there seem to lead to a dead end no matter how many times you try them.

Now I'm realizing that “…three steps forward, two steps back…” is really just One step… not a footstep so much as a step in the process of understanding… a step in Growth… a step in Progress. The “Third,” apparently Forward, step is the New Discovery… the two apparently Backward steps take us to where the Next Step toward Discovery actually begins.

No matter how you look at it… “…three steps forward, two steps back…” is being One Step Ahead!

Quotes

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-196 Section-3)
Moral evaluation with a religious meaning — spiritual insight — connotes the individual's choice between good and evil, truth and error, material and spiritual, human and divine, time and eternity. Human survival is in great measure dependent on consecrating the human will to the choosing of those values selected by this spirit-value sorter — the indwelling interpreter and unifier. Personal religious experience consists in two phases: discovery in the human mind and revelation by the indwelling divine spirit.

(From: Ham 9/26/2004 – the Nashville TeaM)
The wisest thing any human being can do is to be OK with not knowing and to willingly be dependent on that higher spirit presence within who does know. You cannot know the future, but you can trust in the spirit that you will be guided in the best way as the future unfolds. Release the notion that one way is right and another way is wrong and don't put that burden on yourself. Simply be content to grow in the spirit each day, to deepen your love for God each day. For this is ultimately all any human being can really do.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 12:18)
If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-101 Section-1)
The highest religious experience is not dependent on prior acts of belief, tradition, and authority; neither is religion the offspring of sublime feelings and purely mystical emotions. It is, rather, a profoundly deep and actual experience of spiritual communion with the spirit influences resident within the human mind

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-5 Section-4)
The morality of the religions of evolution drives men forward in the God quest by the motive power of fear. The religions of revelation allure men to seek for a God of love because they crave to become like him. But religion is not merely a passive feeling of “absolute dependence” and “surety of survival”; it is a living and dynamic experience of divinity attainment predicated on humanity service.

(From: D. H. Lawrence (1885 - 1930)
It is a fine thing to establish one's own religion in one's heart, not to be dependent on tradition and second-hand ideals. Life will seem to you, later, not a lesser, but a greater thing.

(From: Muriel Fox)
Women and men have to fight together to change society - and both will benefit… Partnership, not dependence, is the real romance in marriage.

(From: Ham 12/5/99 – the Nashville TeaM)
You must each find your true source of self-worth, your true source of love, your true source of comfort and then you will love but not be dependent or attached to that love. And yes, you will love more deeply and more truly and more completely because you are depending upon the true source of all love.

(From: Epicurus (341 BC - 270 BC), 300 B.C)
The man least dependent upon the morrow goes to meet the morrow most cheerfully.

(From: Abraham 4/7/02 – the Woods Cross TeaM)
Children are for the most part motivated by the desires of their hearts. They awaken each day as if it were their very first day on earth.
As we become like the little children, we are learning to be dependent upon the Father's guidance.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-92 Section-7)
Religious meanings progress in self-consciousness when the child transfers his ideas of omnipotence from his parents to God. And the entire religious experience of such a child is largely dependent on whether fear or love has dominated the parent-child relationship.

(From: Ham - 1/8/99– the S.E. Idaho TeaM)
Remember, spiritual growth is not synonymous with emotion. Do not make the error of judging your spiritual status by how you feel. Your emotions, for the most part, are responsive to your electrochemical bodily systems and your interpretations of the meanings of the events that occurred to you in your life. Spiritual growth is dependent upon intention, motivation, dedication, persistence, and most of all, love.

(From: Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865)
I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crises. The great point is to bring them the real facts.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-137 Section-8)
Those who first seek to enter the kingdom, thus beginning to strive for a nobility of character like that of my Father, shall presently possess all else that is needful. But I say to you in all sincerity: Unless you seek entrance into the kingdom with the faith and trusting dependence of a little child, you shall in no wise gain admission.

(From: Francis Cardinal Spellman (1889 - 1967)
Pray as if everything depended upon God and work as if everything depended upon man.

(From:
Ruth Ross)

All prosperity begins in the mind and is dependent only on the full use of our creative imagination.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-156 Section-5)
Spiritual destiny is dependent on faith, love, and devotion to truth — hunger and thirst for righteousness — the wholehearted desire to find God and to be like him.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
The human child does not choose to be Dependent upon its' parent. It just is.

All other Dependence is a choice. Do you choose to be Dependent on others for your success or for your happiness? How does that work out for you?

Choose rather to be Dependent upon God.

“The law of Moses says, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' What shall we say?” And Jesus answered: “You shall return good for evil. My messengers must not strive with men, but be gentle toward all. Measure for measure shall not be your rule. The rulers of men may have such laws, but not so in the kingdom; mercy always shall determine your judgments and love your conduct.

(From:
Frank A. Clark)

Criticism, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish a man's growth without destroying his roots.

(From: The ASB Bible - Galatians 6:1)
Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.

(From: Francois de Fenelon (1651 - 1715)
It is only imperfection that complains of what is imperfect. The more perfect we are, the more gentle and quiet we become toward the defects of others.

(From: Saint Francis de Sales (1567 - 1622)
When you encounter difficulties and contradictions, do not try to break them, but bend them with gentleness and time.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #43)
The gentlest thing in the world overcomes the hardest thing in the world.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-178 Section-1)
“You are indeed to be gentle in your dealings with erring mortals, patient in your intercourse with ignorant men, and forbearing under provocation; but you are also to be valiant in defense of righteousness, mighty in the promulgation of truth, and aggressive in the preaching of this gospel of the kingdom, even to the ends of the earth.”

(From: William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616)
His life was gentle; and the elements
So mixed in him, that Nature might stand up,
And say to all the world, THIS WAS A MAN!

(From: Leo Rosten (1908 -)
I learned that it is the weak who are cruel, and that gentleness is to be expected only from the strong.

(From: Saint Francis de Sales (1567 - 1622)
Nothing is so strong as gentleness. Nothing so gentle as real strength.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #78)
The soft overcomes the hard;
the gentle overcomes the rigid.
Everyone knows this is true,
but few can put it into practice.

(From: Morrissey, The Queen is dead 1985)
It's easy to laugh it's easy to hate. It takes guts to be gentle and kind.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-34 Section-6)
The consciousness of the spirit domination of a human life is presently attended by an increasing exhibition of the characteristics of the Spirit in the life reactions of such a spirit-led mortal, “for the fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance.” Such spirit-guided and divinely illuminated mortals, while they yet tread the lowly paths of toil and in human faithfulness perform the duties of their earthly assignments, have already begun to discern the lights of eternal life as they glimmer on the faraway shores of another world; already have they begun to comprehend the reality of that inspiring and comforting truth, “The kingdom of God is not meat and drink but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.” And throughout every trial and in the presence of every hardship, spirit-born souls are sustained by that hope which transcends all fear because the love of God is shed abroad in all hearts by the presence of the divine Spirit.

(From: Wilfred Peterson, This Week (Oct. 1, 1961)
The art of being yourself at your best is the art of unfolding your personality into the person you want to be. . . . Be gentle with yourself, learn to love yourself, to forgive yourself, for only as we have the right attitude toward ourselves can we have the right attitude toward others.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Gentleness exhibits kindness, demonstrates tenderness, reveals caring.
Gentleness can comfort a broken heart, can soothe a trampled spirit, can dispel the prison of fear.
In Gentleness does one become both reservoir and conduit for the healing Love of God.
Gentleness is Godlike… it is the Nature of God, it is the Way of God.

You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:48)

Practice Gentleness.
Practice Makes Perfect

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within. You are the Temple. You are the Congregation. Any and All Truth is the Gospel. The Divine Spirit within you is your True Minister.

There is nothing so vital to humanity, nor more difficult to master than…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #797, is Communication…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Communication…

We Communicate with our ego, and with our Soul.

Unfortunately when we Communicate with one another, it is the ego that gets most of the use. It speaks more than it listens… misinterprets more than it understands… defends more than it supports. The ego rehearses what it wants to say next because it fears it will say the wrong thing, it fears looking foolish, and it tends to be easily distracted. Because of this inherent tendency, it is usually playing catch up… never quite fully understanding. When egos try to Communicate, it tends to be more about winning than about sharing… more a battle than a dance. And yet we should not disparage the ego for it is just as the little child in the room that merely wants to be heard… to be seen… to be appreciated.

When there is a true shared understanding in Communication between individuals, it is evidence of Souls in play and At play. They do not rehearse or review… they interact. It is not a skirmish… but rather a Song to be sung together. Soul listens and then speaks and then listens again. When Souls communicate it is for sharing the excitement of personal discovery… for finding greater understanding… for sharing Love and Compassion and Friendship.

There are many obstacles to satisfactory Communication that tend to keep ego in the forefront of most conversational attempts. Fear, pain and exhaustion can override ones ability to focus adequately and frequently lead to some level of misunderstanding or misinterpretation. Personality differences can confuse and perplex at times as well… not to mention differences in upbringing and family idiosyncrasies. Add to that the fact that male and female brains work so entirely differently, it is rather surprising that human beings are able to really Communicate at All! And yet we still try, and sometimes we actually succeed because of the One thing we All have in Common whether we know it or not… whether we believe it or not … whether we acknowledge it or not.

I don't really have to tell you what that One thing is… Do I. Do I?

Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-160 Section-2)
There are just two ways in which mortals may live together: the material or animal way and the spiritual or human way. By the use of signals and sounds animals are able to communicate with each other in a limited way. But such forms of communication do not convey meanings, values, or ideas. The one distinction between man and the animal is that man can communicate with his fellows by means of symbols which most certainly designate and identify meanings, values, ideas, and even ideals.

(From: Lynn Johnston (1947 -)
We are all born with wonderful gifts. We use these gifts to express ourselves, to amuse, to strengthen, and to communicate. We begin as children to explore and develop our talents, often unaware that we are unique, that not everyone can do what we're doing!

(From: Donella Meadows, The Global Citizen)
Your paradigm is so intrinsic to your mental process that you are hardly aware of its existence, until you try to communicate with someone with a different paradigm.

(From: Robert Greenleaf)
Many attempts to communicate are nullified by saying too much.

(From: Charlie Kaufman, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)
Constantly talking isn't necessarily communicating.

(From:
Leo Rosten (1908 -)

Extremists think "communication" means agreeing with them.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-196 Section-3)
The great challenge to modern man is to achieve better communication with the divine Monitor that dwells within the human mind. Man's greatest adventure in the flesh consists in the well-balanced and sane effort to advance the borders of self-consciousness out through the dim realms of embryonic soul-consciousness in a wholehearted effort to reach the borderland of spirit-consciousness — contact with the divine presence. Such an experience constitutes God-consciousness, an experience mightily confirmative of the pre-existent truth of the religious experience of knowing God.

(From: Leonard Bernstein (1918 - 1990)
Music . . . can name the un-nameable and communicate the unknowable.

(From: Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982)
Art is the indispensable medium for the communication of a moral idea.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-133 Section-4)
“My brother, I perceive you are seeking for truth, and I suggest that the spirit of the Father of all truth may chance to dwell within you. Did you ever sincerely endeavor to talk with the spirit of your own soul? Such a thing is indeed difficult and seldom yields consciousness of success; but every honest attempt of the material mind to communicate with its indwelling spirit meets with certain success, notwithstanding that the majority of all such magnificent human experiences must long remain as superconscious registrations in the souls of such God-knowing mortals.”

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-91 Section-8)
To some individuals prayer is the calm expression of gratitude; to others, a group expression of praise, social devotions; sometimes it is the imitation of another's religion, while in true praying it is the sincere and trusting communication of the spiritual nature of the creature with the anywhere presence of the spirit of the Creator.
