(From:
Janis Joplin (1943 - 1970 )
I must be an optimist, because a pessimist is never disappointed.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-48 Section-7)
Anxiety must be abandoned. The disappointments hardest to bear are those which never come.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #55)
The Master's power is like this.
He lets all things come and go
effortlessly, without desire.
He never expects results;
thus he is never disappointed.
He is never disappointed;
thus his spirit never grows old.

(From: Alexander Pope (1688 - 1744)
Blessed is the man who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.

(From: Henry David Thoreau)
“If we will be quiet and ready enough, we shall find compensation in every disappointment.”

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-156 Section-5)
God-knowing individuals are not discouraged by misfortune or downcast by disappointment. Believers are immune to the depression consequent upon purely material upheavals; spirit livers are not perturbed by the episodes of the material world. Candidates for eternal life are practitioners of an invigorating and constructive technique for meeting all of the vicissitudes and harassments of mortal living.

(From: Jane Austen (1775 - 1817), Mansfield Park)
There will be little rubs and disappointments everywhere, and we are all apt to expect too much; but then, if one scheme of happiness fails, human nature turns to another; if the first calculation is wrong, we make a second better: we find comfort somewhere.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-48 Section-6)
…sometimes your most disappointing disappointments have become your greatest blessings.

(From: Henry Ward Beecher )
“Ones best success comes after their greatest disappointments.”

(From: Marsha Sinetar )
“Burning desire to be or do something gives us staying power - a reason to get up every morning or to pick ourselves up and start in again after a disappointment”

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-130 Section-6)
“And when you become so readjusted to life within yourself, you become likewise readjusted to the universe; you have been born again--born of the spirit--and henceforth will your whole life become one of victorious accomplishment. Trouble will invigorate you; disappointment will spur you on; difficulties will challenge you; and obstacles will stimulate you.”

(From: Martin Luther King, jr.)
We must expect finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope.

(From: Beverly Sills (1929 - )
You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try.

(From: Mark Twain (1835 - 1910 )
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do then by the ones you did. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-6)
One of the most amazing earmarks of religious living is that dynamic and sublime peace, that peace which passes all human understanding, that cosmic poise which betokens the absence of all doubt and turmoil. Such levels of spiritual stability are immune to disappointment. Such religionists are like the Apostle Paul, who said: "I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else shall be able to separate us from the love of God."

The Sermon
***********
Life comes not without it's Disappointments.
Is not perhaps Disappointment, the grain of sand in the oyster of life?

From it we may learn the supreme joy of overcoming obstacles that previously defeated us.
Because of it we are able to learn the better way to do things.
Disappointment can develop our strength... temper our resolve... enhance our courage.

Disappointment makes life interesting... even though it is the harbinger of temporary suffering.
  1. Imagine the boredom of existence if Disappointment were impossible.
  2. you could not lose, there would be no joy in victory...
  3. you could not fail, would success ever taste so sweet?

  4. Disappointment...
Avoid it at all costs, certainly...
But let it Never defeat your faith or your hope or your determination!

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
Give me strength when I feel weak... persistence when I feel overwhelmed... courage when I feel fear. Help me to be the child You see in me.

You ALL are Within the Infinitely Loving Embrace of our Universal Parent,

The Creator's Infinite Love to all of You,

Quotes

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-146 Section-3)
“You should never forget that intolerance is the mask covering up the entertainment of secret doubts as to the trueness of one's belief. No man is at any time disturbed by his neighbor's attitude when he has perfect confidence in the truth of that which he wholeheartedly believes. Courage is the confidence of thoroughgoing honesty about those things which one professes to believe.”

(From: King Whitney Jr. )
Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better.

(From: Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784 )
Self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-149 Section-6)
“I have come into the world to put love in the place of fear, joy in the place of sorrow, confidence in the place of dread, loving service and appreciative worship in the place of slavish bondage and meaningless ceremonies.”

(From: Marie Curie (1867 - 1934 )
Life is not easy for any of us, but what of that? We must have perseverance and, above all, confidence in ourselves.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-140 Section-8)
Have faith--confidence in the eventual triumph of divine justice and eternal goodness.

(From: Marcus Garvey )
If you have no confidence in self you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence you have won even before you started.

(From: Norman Vincent Peale (1898 - 1993 )
Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy

(From: Og Mandino (1923 - 1996 )
Once you realize how valuable you are and how much you have going for you, the smiles will return, the sun will break out, the music will play, and you will finally be able to move forward the life that God intended for you with grace, strength, courage, and confidence.

(From: Anna Freud (1895 - 1982 )
I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence, but it comes from within. It is there all the time.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-7)
Jesus was an unusually cheerful person, but he was not a blind and unreasoning optimist. His constant word of exhortation was, "Be of good cheer." He could maintain this confident attitude because of his unswerving trust in God and his unshakable confidence in man. He was always touchingly considerate of all men because he loved them and believed in them. Still he was always true to his convictions and magnificently firm in his devotion to the doing of his Father's will.

(From: Hasidic Saying )
The man who has confidence in himself gains the confidence of others.

(From: Francois De La Rochefoucauld (1613 - 1680 )
The confidence which we have in ourselves gives birth to much of that which we have in others.

(From: The RSV Bible - John I 4:17-19)
In this is love perfected with us, that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and he who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because he first loved us.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-133 Section-1)
“…I have absolute confidence in my heavenly Father's overcare; I am consecrated to doing the will of my Father in heaven. I do not believe that real harm can befall me; I do not believe that my lifework can really be jeopardized by anything my enemies might wish to visit upon me, and surely we have no violence to fear from our friends. I am absolutely assured that the entire universe is friendly to me--this all-powerful truth I insist on believing with a wholehearted trust in spite of all appearances to the contrary.”

The Sermon
***********
It is Confidence that allows you to take the first step...
It is Confidence that allows you to take the next...
It is Confidence that allows you to persevere...
It is Confidence that allows you to succeed.

God Loves you...
God Cares for you...

In that you may have Complete Confidence!

Allow yourself to Be Confident...

Quotes

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-196 Section-3)
Religion is man's supreme gesture, his magnificent reach for final reality, his determination to find God and to be like him.

(From: Tommy Lasorda )
The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in determination.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-155 Section-5)
The religion of the spirit means effort, struggle, conflict, faith, determination, love, loyalty, and progress. The religion of the mind--the theology of authority--requires little or none of these exertions from its formal believers. Tradition is a safe refuge and an easy path for those fearful and halfhearted souls who instinctively shun the spirit struggles and mental uncertainties associated with those faith voyages of daring adventure out upon the high seas of unexplored truth in search for the farther shores of spiritual realities as they may be discovered by the progressive human mind and experienced by the evolving human soul.

(From: Mark Twain (1835 - 1910 )
The miracle, or the power, that elevates the few is to be found in their industry, application, and perseverance under the prompting of a brave, determined spirit.

(From: Rosalind Sussman Yalow )
We must believe in ourselves or no one else will believe in us; we must match our aspirations with the competence, courage, and determination to succeed.

(From: Claude M Bristol )
Constant and determined effort breaks down all resistance and sweeps away all obstacles.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-110 Section-3)
…the great achievement of mortal life is the attainment of a true and understanding consecration to the eternal aims of the divine spirit who waits and works within your mind. But a devoted and determined effort to realize eternal destiny is wholly compatible with a light-hearted and joyous life and with a successful and honorable career on earth.

(From: Martha Washington (1732 - 1280 )
I am still determined to be cheerful and happy, in whatever situation I may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances.

(From: Henry Van Dyke )
Some succeed because they are destined to, but most succeed because they are determined to.

(From: Richard M. DeVos )
If I had to select one quality, one personal characteristic that I regard as being most highly correlated with success, whatever the field, I would pick the trait of persistence. Determination. The will to endure to the end, to get knocked down seventy times and get up off the floor saying, "Here comes number seventy-one!"

Morris Schwartz is dying and is on his deathbed. He is with his nurse, his wife, his daughter and 2 sons, and knows the end is near. So he says to them:
"Bernie, I want you to take the Beverly Hills houses."

"Sybil, take the apartments over in Los Angeles Plaza."
"Hymie, I want you to take the offices over in City Center."
"Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings downtown"

The nurse is just blown away by all this, and as Morris slips away, she says to the wife, "Mrs. Schwartz, your husband must have been such a hard working man to have accumulated so much property."

Sarah replies, "Property shmoperty...the schmuck had a newspaper route."

Nothing leads to success better than adequate...

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #901, is Preparation…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From:
Josiah Gilbert Holland)
Let this be understood, then, at starting; that the patient conquest of difficulties which rise in the regular and legitimate channels of business and enterprise is not only essential in securing the success which you seek but it is essential to that preparation of your mind, requisite for the enjoyment of your successes, and for retaining them when gained.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-48 Section-6)
You will learn that you increase your burdens and decrease the likelihood of success by taking yourself too seriously. Nothing can take precedence over the work of your status sphere--this world or the next. Very important is the work of preparation for the next higher sphere, but nothing equals the importance of the work of the world in which you are actually living. But though the work is important, the self is not. When you feel important, you lose energy to the wear and tear of ego dignity so that there is little energy left to do the work. Self-importance, not work-importance, exhausts immature creatures; it is the self element that exhausts, not the effort to achieve. You can do important work if you do not become self-important; you can do several things as easily as one if you leave yourself out. Variety is restful; monotony is what wears and exhausts.

(From: Thomas a Kempis (1380 - 1471 )
The good devout man first makes inner preparation for the actions he has later to perform.

(From: The Book of Runes -#8 - Fertility / New Beginnings )
Being centered and grounded, freeing yourself from all unwanted influences, and seeing the humor, you are indeed prepared to open yourself to the Will of Heaven, and can await your deliverance with calm certainty.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-110 Section-1)
Although the divine indwellers are chiefly concerned with your spiritual preparation for the next stage of the never-ending existence, they are also deeply interested in your temporal welfare and in your real achievements on earth. They are delighted to contribute to your health, happiness, and true prosperity. They are not indifferent to your success in all matters of planetary advancement which are not inimical to your future life of eternal progress.

(From: John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873 )
No one can be a great thinker who does not recognize that as a thinker it is his first duty to follow his intellect to whatever conclusions it may lead. Truth gains more even by the errors of one who, with due study, and preparation, thinks for himself, than by the true opinions of those who only hold them because they do not suffer themselves to think.

(From: Solonia 2/28/04 – the Garden TeaM)
You may think that unconditionally loving Truth and actively seeking Father's Will might be the only lessons you would need to learn for the great preparation, and indeed they do encompass all lessons. And yet there are others that will be forthcoming. So, continue in your preparation, dear ones. There is much more to come.

(From: Alexander Graham Bell (1847 - 1922 )
Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.

(From: The RSV Bible - Corinthians I 2:9-11)
"What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him," God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For what person knows a man's thoughts except the spirit of the man which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-142 Section-6)
"Already does the spirit of the Father in heaven indwell you. If you would be led by this spirit from above, very soon would you begin to see with the eyes of the spirit, and then by the wholehearted choice of spirit guidance would you be born of the spirit since your only purpose in living would be to do the will of your Father who is in heaven. And so finding yourself born of the spirit and happily in the kingdom of God, you would begin to bear in your daily life the abundant fruits of the spirit."

(From: Colin Powell )
There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.

(From: Ham 5/17/2001 – the Nashville TeaM)
The Father does not neglect his children. Sometimes, when you feel like nothing is working, it is easy to feel abandoned by the spirit. But, this is not so. These are the times when he is working most intensively with you. For you must be prepared for the door that will open. Spiritual preparation is no small thing. It is the entire essence of life. It is easy to become impatient and to wish that this had happened or that and to bemoan one's situation at the time. But if you could see the wider picture, you would understand the necessity of preparation time. Only in hindsight will this be clear to you.

(From: Robert Heinlein (1907 - 1988), Time Enough for Love )
There is no such thing as luck. There is only adequate or inadequate preparation to cope with a statistical universe.

(From: Seneca (5 BC - 65 AD )
Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.

(From: Harriet Martineau (1802 - 1876 )
You better live your best and act your best and think your best today, for today is the sure preparation for tomorrow and all the other tomorrows that follow.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Living in the Now

It is the Goal of the Spirit... the Joy of the Soul... the chore of the ego.

Preparation is what allows “Living in the Now” to reveal and to liberate it's Greatest Values.

The Artist, the Singer, the Athlete, the Chef, the Businessman, the Parent... They all understand the necessity of and for, Preparation... whether it is exercise, practice, having the right tools, proper planning, or appropriate attitude... perhaps/likely all of them.

When adequately Prepared and In the Present Moment, Great things can and Do happen... things we didn't know or believe ourselves capable of. It is these moments that we are capable of feeling the Presence of God... experiencing the Divine Partnership that we so deeply Crave.

And yet... How often do we find ourselves unprepared or under prepared?
A lot more frequently than we might like to admit I would imagine... No?
Still... there are many times that we Have done the necessary Preparation and are enjoyably rewarded for it, though it is easier to remember the times we didn't.

How is your Preparation for the Next Life going?
Do you think about it?
Enough?

I Pray for the strength and the drive that I need to be fully prepared to do Your Will.
