Welcome by: Pastor Daniel
************************
Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and Welcome once again to The Church that is Within.

Well... It's been a Long Two Thousand Years [give or take], but we finally made it! Year 2000!! And Look, by golly, We are Still Here!! ;-) Y2K doesn't seem to have had much of an impact yet, and in case you hadn't noticed, Armageddon didn't happen Either. Go Figure! Can't say I'm very disappointed, can You? Guess we'll just have to live with what we've got for now and just do the best we can to make things better... Suppose?

Welcome to The First Sunday of the New Year... the New Century... the New Millennium! Seems to Me like it should be pretty Significant... wouldn't ya Think? Maybe I should do something Special for Today's Service...... or not. How 'bout if I just start typing and see what happens... OK? I think Today, I'll start with the Sermon first, then give the Quotes, and then as usual end with a Prayer. I don't know how Special it may turn out to be, but it will indeed be Different.

Here goes....

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Ordinarily in my search for quotes for the Sunday Services, I try to find relatively brief passages from a variety of different sources. I do this usually to show the underlying Unity in our world's varied Spiritual Philosophies that on the Surface would appear to be miles apart. It is my intention to show how close together we all really are in our Desires... in our Hopes... in our Needs.

We of this world are One People. We ALL ultimately Came from the same Original Source, and all who Worship, Worship the same Source; albeit we all seem to choose different Parts of the Source to give our personal Allegiance to.

Everything is not Truth. No. But IN Everything, a measure of Truth can be found.

The Human Soul has an innate Sense of Truth... an Inherent Desire for Truth. It is Each person's Personal Experience of Truth---Each person's Personal Life Experience of their Own Source---that determines how they will choose to Honor, Worship, Respect, Revere, or Love their Source. People do not truly Worship, merely out of a sense of duty. They Worship because they have experienced Something Worthy of their personal Worship. True it may be that a sense of duty often serves as the "Reminder" to Worship when the necessary actions of personal survival totally consume our thoughts, but the Act of Worship itself is invariably directed towards that which has given Meaning and Purpose to our lives.

Some Peoples Worship the Absoluteness of the Source... some the Justice... some the Grandeur, the Omnipotence, the Universal Unity of the Source. Others Worship the Mercy, the Providence, the Love, the Person of the Source. Most Worship some Combination of the different Attributes of the Source. It is their own personal Experience of the Source of All that determines what they choose to Name the Original Source. Whether it be called Tao, Jehovah, Great Spirit, God, Father, Mother, Parent, or any Other name which designates That which deserves our Worship, is I feel not nearly as Significant as the fact that we All share the same inner Need---the same inner Call---to Worship the Source that we Perceive.

There is something or someone mutually recognizable by all Spiritual individuals, and also mutually Attractive. Regardless of what we may choose to Call it, there is a certain commonality of personal experience that is the Same for All People. It is an Inner Feeling... an Inner Knowing... an Inner Comprehension, that cannot be adequately described in human words. But when we allow our Souls to Openly communicate with one another, rather than our egos, it is possible to Share and to Recognize and to Appreciate that Common Experience for which there is no earthly language.

If our world and it's Peoples are to Survive, to Grow, to Mature, and to Prosper in the New Millennium, we must become United in Universal Brotherhood and, at the Same time, we must learn to Respect the inherent Diversity of Personal Experience and Personal Uniqueness. This will not be an easy Task, for our history is one of Separateness and of exclusional Conformity to localized perceptions. But it is a Task that is Worthy of our Effort and Worthy of the Devotion of All Children of the Original Source.

I watched the New Years Celebrations of people All over our World on ABC and PBS this year. From the very First time-zone whose clock turned past Midnight, to the very Last... from All peoples of All Races and All Beliefs, I noticed something we All had in Common---Hope and Expectation for something Better than we already Have.

The people of the world are ready... the Stage is Set. Let us All Unite in a Concerted Effort towards Universal Peace, Health, Respect, and Love.

If not Now, then When? We ARE the ones we have so long been Waiting For!

So Anyway... Today in my search for Quotes for the Sunday Service, all the quotes are from the same place, and they are longer segments that I usually use because it was all very Meaningful to me and I couldn't bring myself to leave any of it out. I Hope they have as much meaning for You as they did for Me.

PAPER 155 - FLEEING THROUGH NORTHERN GALILEE
SECTION 6 - THE SECOND DISCOURSE ON RELIGION

And so, while they (ed: Jesus and the Disciples) paused in the shade of the hillside, Jesus continued to teach them regarding the religion of the spirit, in substance saying:

You have come out from among those of your fellows who choose to remain satisfied with a religion of mind, who crave security and prefer conformity. You have elected to exchange your feelings of authoritative certainty for the assurances of the spirit of adventurous and progressive faith. You have dared to protest against the grueling bondage of institutional religion and to reject the authority of the traditions of record which are now regarded as the word of God. Our Father did indeed speak through Moses, Elijah, Isaiah, Amos, and Hosea, but he did not cease to minister words of truth to the world when these prophets of old made an end of their utterances. My Father is no respecter of races or generations in that the word of truth is vouchsafed one age and withheld from another. Commit not the folly of calling that divine which is wholly human, and fail not to discern the words of truth which come not through the traditional oracles of supposed inspiration.

I have called upon you to be born again, to be born of the spirit. I have called you out of the darkness of authority and the lethargy of tradition into the transcendent light of the realization of the possibility of making for yourselves the greatest discovery possible for the human soul to make--the supernal experience of finding God for yourself, in yourself, and of yourself, and of doing all this as a fact in your own personal experience. And so may you pass from death to life, from the authority of tradition to the experience of knowing God; thus will you pass from darkness to light, from a racial faith inherited to a personal faith achieved by actual experience; and thereby will you progress from a theology of mind handed down by your ancestors to a true religion of spirit which shall be built up in your souls as an eternal endowment.

Your religion shall change from the mere intellectual belief in traditional authority to the actual experience of that living faith which is able to grasp the reality of God and all that relates to the divine spirit of the Father. The religion of the mind ties you hopelessly to the past; the religion of the spirit consists in progressive revelation and ever beckons you on toward higher and holier achievements in spiritual ideals and eternal realities.

While the religion of authority may impart a present feeling of settled security, you pay for such a transient satisfaction the price of the loss of your spiritual freedom and religious liberty. My Father does not require of you as the price of entering the kingdom of heaven that you should force yourself to subscribe to a belief in things which are spiritually repugnant, unholy, and untruthful. It is not required of you that your own sense of mercy, justice, and truth should be outraged by submission to an outworn system of religious forms and ceremonies. The religion of the spirit leaves you forever free to follow the truth wherever the leadings of the spirit may take you. And who can judge--perhaps this spirit may have something to impart to this generation which other generations have refused to hear?

(from: The Urantia Papers – Paper-155 Section-6)
To honor the God-knowing leaders of the past may indeed be worth while, but why, in so doing, should you sacrifice the supreme experience of human existence: finding God for yourselves and knowing him in your own souls?

Every race of mankind has its own mental outlook upon human existence; therefore must the religion of the mind ever run true to these various racial viewpoints. Never can the religions of authority come to unification. Human unity and mortal brotherhood can be achieved only by and through the superendowment of the religion of the spirit. Racial minds may differ, but all mankind is indwelt by the same divine and eternal spirit. The hope of human brotherhood can only be realized when, and as, the divergent mind religions of authority become impregnated with, and overshadowed by, the unifying and ennobling religion of the spirit--the religion of personal spiritual experience.

The religions of authority can only divide men and set them in conscientious array against each other; the religion of the spirit will progressively draw men together and cause them to become understandingly sympathetic with one another. The religions of authority require of men uniformity in belief, but this is impossible of realization in the present state of the world. The religion of the spirit requires only unity of experience--uniformity of destiny--making full allowance for diversity of belief. The religion of the spirit requires only uniformity of insight, not uniformity of viewpoint and outlook. The religion of the spirit does not demand uniformity of intellectual views, only unity of spirit feeling.

(from: The Urantia Papers – Paper-155 Section-6)
Never forget there is only one adventure which is more satisfying and thrilling than the attempt to discover the will of the living God, and that is the supreme experience of honestly trying to do that divine will. And fail not to remember that the will of God can be done in any earthly occupation. Some callings are not holy and others secular. All things are sacred in the lives of those who are spirit led; that is, subordinated to truth, ennobled by love, dominated by mercy, and restrained by fairness--justice. The spirit which my Father and I shall send into the world is not only the Spirit of Truth but also the spirit of idealistic beauty.

You must cease to seek for the word of God only on the pages of the olden records of theologic authority. Those who are born of the spirit of God shall henceforth discern the word of God regardless of whence it appears to take origin. Divine truth must not be discounted because the channel of its bestowal is apparently human. Many of your brethren have minds which accept the theory of God while they spiritually fail to realize the presence of God. And that is just the reason why I have so often taught you that the kingdom of heaven can best be realized by acquiring the spiritual attitude of a sincere child. It is not the mental immaturity of the child that I commend to you but rather the spiritual simplicity of such an easy-believing and fully-trusting little one. It is not so important that you should know about the fact of God as that you should increasingly grow in the ability to feel the presence of God.

When you once begin to find God in your soul, presently you will begin to discover him in other men's souls and eventually in all the creatures and creations of a mighty universe. But what chance does the Father have to appear as a God of supreme loyalties and divine ideals in the souls of men who give little or no time to the thoughtful contemplation of such eternal realities? While the mind is not the seat of the spiritual nature, it is indeed the gateway thereto.

But do not make the mistake of trying to prove to other men that you have found God; you cannot consciously produce such valid proof, albeit there are two positive and powerful demonstrations of the fact that you are God-knowing, and they are:
        1. The fruits of the spirit of God showing forth in your daily routine life.
        2. The fact that your entire life plan furnishes positive proof that you have unreservedly risked everything you are and have on the adventure of survival after death in the pursuit of the hope of finding the God of eternity, whose presence you have foretasted in time.

The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
There is absolutely NOTHING that I Cherish more than the Living Personal Relationship that I have with You. Everything else in my experience Pales by Comparison. It is my prayer for the New Year... the New Century... the New Millennium, that All People Everywhere may Personally Taste of the Exquisite Flavor of Your Divine Love and Compassion and Grace, and to Know You Personally as their Friend and Constant Companion. I could wish for nothing greater nor more Fulfilling.

You ALL are Within the Infinitely Loving Embrace of our Universal

The religion of Jesus is a new gospel of faith to be proclaimed to struggling humanity. This new religion is founded on faith, hope, and love.

(From: the RSV Bible - Luke 7:50)
And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

(From: the KJV Bible - Mark 10:52)
And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole.

(From: the RSV Bible - Ephesians 2:8)
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God

(From: the RSV Bible - Romans 5:5)
and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

(from: the Urantia Papers - Paper-157 Section-2)
Even now you should begin to find deliverance from the bondage of fear and doubt as you enter upon the living of the new life of faith and hope. And when the feelings of service for your fellow men arise within your soul, do not stifle them; when the emotions of love for your neighbor well up within your heart, give expression to such urges of affection in intelligent ministry to the real needs of your fellows."

(From: the RSV Bible - Corinthians I 13:12-13)
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood. So faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

The Sermon
***********
"but the greatest of these is love."

Tuesdays are Music Night at Rick's. He and I write and record music together while we discuss Everything Spiritual---Supreme and Ultimate Time and Space... The next Universe Age... Angelic participation in the human realms... Truth... Love---You know, That sort of stuff.

So anyways... Last Tuesday night I was out on the porch sipping a beer and smoking my pipe... and Really enjoying the blanket of fresh snow that was enhancing the already peaceful environment. The whiteness and reflectivity of the snow gave everything a gentle glow. I was having one of those Awe moments. Ya know, when words... even Thoughts just seem to disappear into Worshipful Serenity? So all of a sudden---almost an intrusion but in retrospect, No---the words, "and the Greatest of these, is Love." kept going over and over in my mind. Now, it Has always been one of my Favorites, but why it chose that particular moment to enter my head is somewhat beyond me (well... other than God, or Angels or Other unseen helpers whispering it to me. Ya Think?)

I started considering why that particular quote might be grabbing at my attention, and then... "But what about Faith and Hope?" The well known verse says we should Stand for Faith, Hope and Love, but then that the Greatest of these is Love.

I got to thinking that Faith, Hope and Love were Actually rather interdependent upon one another. Could a person Truly make a step in Faith towards something... totally devoid of Hope? One must exercise Faith in order to give and receive Love---The faith that your love will be received, and the faith that that You will be loved. The most Hopeless feeling in the World, is feeling unloved... wouldn't you say? When ya feel unloving and unloved, what's there to Hope for EXCEPT to Love and Be Loved. Everything else is rather Insignificant in the absence of Love, I would say. Wouldn't You?

Faith, Hope and Love make a rather Significant Spiritual Triangle when you Think about it. Love breeds Hope. Hope is Essential to actually stepping in Faith. And it is through Living Faith that we find God and Love. Faith, Hope and Love are Always a dependable approach God. God, the Center of the Triangle, Always Loves.

There Must be Love to inspire Hope, and Hope to inspire Faith and Faith to allow Love to flow in and flow out. Faith, Hope and Love must remain Active---Living. They provide Fresh Personal Satisfaction when they are In Motion in our lives. Stagnant, they wither, fade, and lose their ability to nourish the Soul.

Ya Know? God does not Compare you to anyone else, because there IS none else exactly like you. God Loves YOU as if you were his Only Child.

Let God's Love for you give you Hope, and let that Hope stimulate you to step in Faith again towards Love.

"but the Greatest of these is Love."

Hmmm. Yah... That makes Sense now! Don't it?

Love. Freely Give it and Freely Receive it.

Love IS the Answer! What's the Question?

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
In You I find Love... Unfailingly... Every Time. When I Feel Your Love flow between me and another, all in that moment is True, Beautiful and Good. WHY do I Still Forget this sometimes??? Why must I be Reminded as if I am Still a little child? What's that? Oh... Yeah... I AM still a little child. I'm Your little child. OK... I'll live with that. Oh, and God? Thanks.

What is Religion Really?

When you once begin to find God in your soul, presently you will begin to discover him in other men's souls and eventually in all the creatures and creations of a mighty universe.

(The Dalai Lama)
If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If You want to be happy, practice compassion.

(by: Albert Einstein)
Intelligence makes clear to us the interrelationship of means and ends. But mere thinking cannot give us a sense of the ultimate and fundamental ends. To make clear these fundamental ends and valuations and to set them fast in the emotional life of the individual, seems to me precisely the most important function which religion has to form in the social life of man.

(by: Ralph Waldo Emerson)
What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-101 Section-9)
True religion is that sublime and profound conviction within the soul which compellingly admonishes man that it would be wrong for him not to believe in those morontial (ed: Soul) realities which constitute his highest ethical and moral concepts, his highest interpretation of life's greatest values and the universe's deepest realities. And such a religion is simply the experience of yielding intellectual loyalty to the highest dictates of spiritual consciousness.

(by: Albert Einstein)
True religion is real living; living with all one's soul, with all one's goodness and righteousness.

(from: The RSV Bible - James 1:26-27)
If any one thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this man's religion is vain. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-99 Section-5)
Just as certainly as men share their religious beliefs, they create a religious group of some sort which eventually creates common goals. Someday religionists will get together and actually effect co-operation on the basis of unity of ideals and purposes rather than attempting to do so on the basis of psychological opinions and theological beliefs. Goals rather than creeds should unify religionists. Since true religion is a matter of personal spiritual experience, it is inevitable that each individual religionist must have his own and personal interpretation of the realization of that spiritual experience. Let the term "faith" stand for the individual's relation to God rather than for the creedal formulation of what some group of mortals have been able to agree upon as a common religious attitude. "Have you faith? Then have it to yourself."

(from: Buddha)
Work out your own salvation. Do not depend on others.

(from: “Shooter” – a Teton Sioux)
All birds, even those of the same species, are not alike, and it is the same with animals and with human beings. The reason WakanTanka does not make two birds, or animals, or human beings exactly alike is because each is placed here by WakanTanka to be an independent individuality and to rely upon itself.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-92 Section-7)
And so should greater enlightenment deliver educated mortals from all dependence on intermediaries in communion with Deity.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-4)
In the mind's eye conjure up a picture of one of your primitive ancestors of cave-dwelling times--a short, misshapen, filthy, snarling hulk of a man standing, legs spread, club upraised, breathing hate and animosity as he looks fiercely just ahead. Such a picture hardly depicts the divine dignity of man. But allow us to enlarge the picture. In front of this animated human crouches a saber-toothed tiger. Behind him, a woman and two children. Immediately you recognize that such a picture stands for the beginnings of much that is fine and noble in the human race, but the man is the same in both pictures. Only in the second sketch you are favored with a widened horizon. You therein discern the motivation of this evolving mortal. His attitude becomes praiseworthy because you understand him. If you could only fathom the motives of your associates, how much better you would understand them. If you could only know your fellows, you would eventually fall in love with them.

The Sermon

You cannot give another your Understanding,
You can only reveal your own.

You cannot give another your Religion,
You can only be an example of your own.

You cannot give another your Hope,
You can only share your own.

You cannot give Salvation to the Soul of another,
You can only truly save your own.

You cannot give Meaning to another's Life for them,
You can only find it in your own.

The only thing of Lasting Value that you can give to another,
         is your Unconditional Love.

Give it Freely to any and all who will accept it,
and even to those who won't.

Accept it from any and all who would Give it to you,
you cannot Possibly have too much of it.

Give Love and Accept Love.
There are no greater Gifts to be had in All the Universe.

Live the Religion of Love.

(from: The RSV Bible - Matthew 22:37-40)
And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets."

(from: "Stormqueen" a Darkover Novel by Marion Zimmer Bradley)
"You have no power over the world or the things of the world, my son; you have renounced all desire for that power. The power you have come here to attain is the power over the things within. Peace will come only when you become fully aware that your thoughts are not from outside yourself; they come from within, and thus are wholly yours, the only things in this universe over which it is legitimate to have total power. You, not your thoughts and memories, rule your mind, and it is you, no other, who bid them to come and go."

(from: Frank Fools Crow, Oglala Lakota (Teton) Sioux holy man)
"Survival of the world depends on our sharing what we have, and working together. If we don't the whole world will die. First the planet, and next the people."

(from: Webster's Dictionary)
ln´de·pend´ent, adj. 1. not influenced or controlled by others. 2. not depending upon something else. 3. not relying on another for aid or support. 4. not subject to another's authority or jurisdiction.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper 140 Section-7)
Though the Master was easy of approach, he always lived independent of, and above, all human beings. Not for one moment was he ever dominated by any purely mortal influence or subject to frail human judgment. He paid no attention to public opinion, and he was uninfluenced by praise. He seldom paused to correct misunderstandings or to resent misrepresentation.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper 34 Section-6)
Those who have received and recognized the indwelling of God have been born of the Spirit. "You are the temple of God, and the spirit of God dwells in you." It is not enough that this spirit be poured out upon you; the divine Spirit must dominate and control every phase of human experience.
It is the presence of the divine Spirit, the water of life, that prevents the consuming thirst of mortal discontent and that indescribable hunger of the unspiritualized human mind. Spirit-motivated beings "never thirst, for this spiritual water shall be in them a well of satisfaction springing up into life everlasting." Such divinely watered souls are all but independent of material environment as regards the joys of living and the satisfactions of earthly existence. They are spiritually illuminated and refreshed, morally strengthened and endowed.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper 180 Section-5)
Love, unselfishness, must undergo a constant and living readaptative interpretation of relationships in accordance with the leading of the Spirit of Truth. Love must thereby grasp the ever-changing and enlarging concepts of the highest cosmic good of the individual who is loved.

(by: Albert Einstein 1879-1955)
Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.

(by: Gandhi)
A "No" uttered from deepest conviction is better and greater than a "Yes" merely uttered to please, or what is worse, to avoid trouble.

The Sermon

"Relationships"

They can make life worth Living.
They can give life Substance and Value.
They can help to lessen the negative effects of disappointment, of grief, of discouragement, even of apparent failure.

"Relationships"

        Ya can't live without 'em.
"No man is an island unto himself."

"Relationships"

There are indeed Many different Kinds of Personal Relationship.
        with God...
with your Spouse or Significant Other...
        with your Child...
        with your Family...
        with your Friends...
        with your Workmates...
        with your Associates and Peers...
        with Acquaintances...
even with someone you meet only in passing.

"Relationships"

They can be Good and Healthy and Growing.
They can be disappointing, stifling, co-dependent.

"Relationships"

        What makes a Good one?
        What makes a bad one?
        "Inquiring minds want to know."

"Dependent Relationships"

In my own experience, there are only Two kinds of "Dependent Relationships" that work... that are Lasting and Healthy and promote Growth: the Dependence a little child has on their Parent(s); and, the Dependence a person has on God.
A little child really has no Choice but that they must depend on their Parents.
A person Does have a choice as to whether or not they will depend on God... but only in their own mind.

"Co-Dependent Relationships"

I have personally, and repeatedly without exception, found co-dependent relationships to be Temporary at best... debilitating and hateful at other-than-best. What do I mean by a 'Co-Dependent Relationship'? A relationship that requires for its survival, being one or more or all of the following: Manipulative; Fearful; Jealous; Controlling; less-than-Truthful; Unfulfilled; Subservient.

"Co-Dependency" is a relatively New term in the consciousness of human society, and is only recently Beginning to be understood with any relative degree of comprehension.

"Co-Dependency" can be outright Blatant. As in:

        "I'll Leave you if you don't _______."
"If you don't do ______ for me, I won't love you anymore."
"I'll (I can) MAKE you do it."
"You better not _______, or else I'll ______!"
        etc.

These types of "Co-Dependency" are relatively easy to identify. They rely on creating Fear in the other person for their effectiveness. Anger and Hatred are the most common result of this ruse.

There are many other types of "Co-Dependency" in relationships however that are more subtle and difficult of recognition. As in:

"I'll do ______ for you, but only if you do ______ for Me."
"I Promise I will ______, if only you will ______."
"I had Intended to do ______ for you, but because you ______, I Won't."
"I can just Change them to be more like how I Want them to be."
"If you leave me I don't know What I would Do."
"If you Really loved me, you would KNOW what I want."
        etc.

These types of "Co-Dependency" rely primarily on bargaining, coercion and/or manipulation of the other person. While they may temporarily bring the desired results, over time they are unsatisfying and reveal that the Love and the relationship is Conditional.

Some types of "Co-Dependency" are so entrenched in our societal way of thinking that they are commonly said in an effort to Compliment the other person. Such as:

        "I can't/won't Live Without you."
"You are the Only thing that gives Meaning to my life."
"I wouldn't be able to go on if you were not in my life."
"I am only Half a Person without you."
"A little-white-lie doesn't hurt if the Intention is good."
"I Love you. Now You say it to Me."

These types of 'Co-Dependency', while they rarely in and of themselves prove fatal to a relationship, can plant an uncomfortable seed of expectation in the other person which cumulatively and in combination with other distressing circumstances can give a feeling of not being able to live-up-to the other's needs.

Unfortunately, most relationships in today's world seem to be infested with, or at Least Modified in some way by 'Co-Dependency' in some form or another. Some relationships Survive it. More and more though are Destroyed by it.

Can 'Co-Dependency' be eliminated?

It will not be easy, but Yes. I believe it Can be. I am Finally experiencing a relationship where 'Co-Dependency' is non-existent, and I Thank God for it every Day.

What did it take?

        Love without Conditions...

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to The Church that is Within.

Last week's Service dealt with identifying Co-Dependency in relationships. This week I will share what it took for ME to overcome it. Maybe it can also work for someone else... maybe Not. Who Knows? It's My Story, and I'm Stickin' TO it.

Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-193 Section-3)
Have you not read in the Scripture where it is written: `It is not good for man to be alone. No man lives to himself'? And also where it says: `He who would have friends must show himself friendly'?

(From: The RSV Bible - John 8:29)
And he who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him."

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-133 Section-4)
"You do well to choose the best and esteem the good, but are you wise when you fail to discern the greater things of mortal life which are embodied in the spirit realms derived from the realization of the presence of God in the human heart? The great thing in all human experience is the realization of knowing the God whose spirit lives within you and seeks to lead you forth on that long and almost endless journey of attaining the personal presence of our common Father, the God of all creation, the Lord of universes."

(From: The RSV Bible - Psalms 62:1-2)
For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly moved.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-181 Section-2)
And then, when you are blessed with spiritual vision, go forth to your work, dedicating your life to the cause of leading mankind to search for God and to seek eternal realities with the eye of spiritual faith and not with the eyes of the material mind.

(From: The KJV Bible - Galatians 6:4-5)
But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For every man shall bear his own burden.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-117 Section-6)
But no God-knowing mortal can ever be lonely in his journey through the cosmos, for he knows that the Father walks beside him each step of the way, while the very way that he is traversing is the presence of the Supreme.

The Sermon
***********
Over the past few years, I have begun learning a lesson that has, for the most part, lifted the yoke of co-dependency from my neck and shoulders. I say "begun learning" not because I don't yet comprehend the lesson intellectually, but because consistently implementing it into my own personal experience is an ever demanding task. The task gets easier as I continue to engage the lesson, but yet it is Still a task none the less. I have Often wished that I had learned this lesson earlier in life... then things would have been different. But then I quickly remind myself that I would not be here right now had I learned it earlier, nor would I have had the opportunity I have now to Fully Appreciate the Incredible Value of the lesson.

I have begun to call the lesson:
'Walking Alone Together'.

        So what has the lesson---
"Walking Alone Together"---taught me that has been so beneficial?

"Walking Alone Together"

The Pathway that leads to Eternity is a Solitary Journey that you and God must travel alone---together. A Personal Relationship with God and self is the only relationship one can Depend upon to be absolutely uninterrupted, year after year... day after day... every Fraction of Every Moment. God is the Only one who experiences---Can experience---every moment of every day with you. All other relationships can be but Partial experiences of shared time together.
No matter How much or how Dearly you Love, or are In Love with, another person, you can not know the Full experience of their life, nor can they know yours. Only God can. No one can make life's significant choices for you---you must make them for yourself. No one can Live your Dreams for you, nor can You live theirs for Them---you can only exist in a Part of anothers Dream. No one can Bring you to God, you must come to God of your own will.

"Walking Alone Together"

I used to Cling to relationships, fearful that if I did not, they would go away... dissipate... end... fail. I felt as if I needed to be there every minute---keeping tabs on it---or I would miss, or not be a part of, something important. My ego felt wounded by the thought of being alone. This clinging invariably began to suffocate and eventually Smother the relationship. At This point I would unintentionally but instinctively cling tighter. I would compromise Anything to artificially hold it together: self-respect; goals; dreams; truth; and even as a last resort---my Ideals. When a relationship finally died, I madly searched for another one to replace it. I rebelled at the thought of walking this earthly path alone. I didn't See yet.

"Walking Alone Together"

The most Significant moment of my life came a few months after a ten year relationship ended.

As Usual... I began frantically looking for another relationship---Any other relationship. I couldn't Stand the thought of being alone again. My human ego self felt like it had to Make something Happen... create a new relationship At All Costs! THIS Time however, my Soul decided that I would not compromise my Self-Respect, my Dreams, my Ideals, nor my Truth, Ever again for Anyone! Failure after failure---One after another---left me feeling that much more alone and unsatisfied. Eventually I came to the conclusion that obviously No One could live with me for any extended period of time unless I compromised myself, and That I would not do Again. I began suspecting that perhaps God must want me to live life by Myself... to share my life with only Him. Terribly frightened, but imminently determined, I Yelled, "OK God, if That's what You Want, if That's Truly Your Will, then SO BE IT! I will Live my life Alone with You and Never again Compromise who I Truly am for Any Reason!"

"It's just You and Me God! That's All I Need."

"Walking Alone Together"

A few months after that incident, I was learning to like myself again. (I guess maybe I wasn't such a bad guy after All.) I began getting my self-respect back---perhaps even for the First Time. I was Free to pursue my Dreams, my Ideals, my Own Unique Life. I had and enjoyed relationships, but I would let none of them imprison me. If anyone didn't like me for who I was, then Oh Well... they don't Have to like me... my life and my relationship with God do not Depend on them liking me. Funny, but when I was most comfortable with Myself, others were most comfortable with me Too. Hmmm... What a Concept!

"Walking Alone Together"

I guess God didn't require that I live my life all alone and only with Him---only that I be Willing to---because while I was busy being uncompromisingly myself, an absolutely Marvelous person entered my life who actually liked me BECAUSE I was being myself and BECAUSE of who I really was. Go Figure! She has Never demanded nor even Asked me to compromise my Self-Respect, my Dreams, my Ideals, nor my Truth and I will NEVER ask it of Her.

I Enjoy our time together, I Cherish it! She Supports me in the pursual of my own Dreams, and Shares in parts of them, yet she also has her Own Dreams---Dreams that I Honor, and Respect, and share in a part of, and Encourage her in even though they may not be exactly the same as my own. Because we didn't/don't try to Force one another to live our own individual Dreams, we were and are able to discover Common Dreams and goals that we pursue Together. We are able to walk our separate paths, hand in hand, side by side... Walking Alone... Together.

Such a life, on Such a Planet!
Walking Alone Together...
