(From: Jesse Jackson)
Never look down on anybody unless you're helping him up.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #67)
Some say that my teaching is nonsense.
Others call it lofty but impractical.
But to those who have looked inside themselves,
this nonsense makes perfect sense.
And to those who put it into practice,
this loftiness has roots that go deep.

I have just three things to teach:
simplicity, patience, compassion.
These three are your greatest treasures.
Simple in actions and in thoughts,
you return to the source of being.
Patient with both friends and enemies,
you accord with the way things are.
Compassionate toward yourself,
you reconcile all beings in the world.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 12:50)
For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.

(From: Jesse Jackson)
It is in struggle and service with our brothers and sisters, individually and collectively, that we find the meaning of life.

(From: Martin Luther King Jr.)
We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-100 Section-4)
Love is infectious, and when human devotion is intelligent and wise, love is more catching than hate. But only genuine and unselfish love is truly contagious. If each mortal could only become a focus of dynamic affection, this benign virus of love would soon pervade the sentimental emotion-stream of humanity to such an extent that all civilization would be encompassed by love, and that would be the realization of the brotherhood of man.

The Sermon
***********
When I was younger, I thought of "Serving God" as going to church. You know... fulfilling the imposed religious Obligations? Like, sit through the service once a week and then go about my own business the rest of the time? It was like a "Doing your Duty" or a "Paying your Dues" kinda' thing---"You Better do it, or the Consequences will be _________." It rather felt like "Slave Service" and was Almost as rewarding.

I left that way of "Serving" in my latter teens. If THAT was what serving God was like, then I figured I could do Without it just as well as With it. It wasn't enough to keep me satisfied, so I just kind of drifted in a different direction for a while. I thought at the time that I was going Away from God, but within a few long years I discovered that I was Actually just looking for a different Concept of God... one that really made Sense to ME.

The "Don't do This and Don't do That or ELSE!" way of thinking served it's purpose for it's time... I guess, but I got to a point where I wanted to know more and more about what TO do, and less and less about what Not to do. I became what is called a Seeker... seeking for a way that "I" could comprehend God. I investigated religion after religion... philosophy after philosophy, and they all made Partial sense to me. They each Perceived God differently, so consequently they all had different ways to go about Serving God. Some serve God as an Appetizer, some as a Side Dish, Many serve God as the Main Course, and some as the Dessert. It made me realize that God isn't just a Part of the meal, God's the Entire Banquet. ;-)

When we Serve God, we are offering what we have Experienced of God to Others.

The Greatest thing we can Be to one another is a Sincerely Caring Brother or Sister. The Greatest thing we can Give to one another is Unconditional Love.

Be a Brother, be a Sister to ALL, Care, have Compassion, Love, Serve. We ALL are a part of the Same Family, you know. God's Family.

The Sermon
***********
Do you Ever have Feelings of being: Frustrated; Thwarted; Put Upon; Overwhelmed; Incapable; Unfulfilled; Weighed Down; Imprisoned; Unsatisfied; Rejected; Blocked; All Alone?

Nahhh... Me Neither. ;-)

But if I ever just... like you know, out of the blue or something... Happened to have one or more (God Forbid, All) of those feelings present in my life at any point in time, What could be done about it? What Causes those kind of feelings in the First place? What Sustains them? What makes them so Hard to let Go of? What makes them so Easy to get Enmeshed in?

I'm finding once Again (Will I Ever Completely learn it?), that "Feelings of being: Frustrated; Thwarted; Put Upon; Overwhelmed; Incapable; Unfulfilled; Weighed Down; Imprisoned; Unsatisfied; Rejected; Blocked; All Alone" are Far more prevalent in my life when---It is My Will that My Will be done instead of My Will that God's Will be done.

A Wise Teacher once asked, "Whose Will is it that you are really Seeking?"

That's a good question to ask one's self when things just don't seem to be going right. You Know... during times when "Those Feelings" are happening... are prevalent... are dominating? Do I feel that way because I feel that God's Good Will isn't being done? More likely it is that I have "Those Feelings" when I am trying to impose my Own will upon a situation rather than seeking to discover what God's Will might be at the moment... Ya Think?

"Feelings of being: Frustrated; Thwarted; Put Upon; Overwhelmed; Incapable; Unfulfilled; Weighed Down; Imprisoned; Unsatisfied; Rejected; Blocked; All Alone" Just don't Happen while I am Consciously, Actively, Right Now at This Very Moment, trying to Discover what God's Will is for me. Funny that...

It's usually only when I have Specific, Inflexible Expectations or Rigid, Unyielding Ways of Perceiving or Habitual, Ego Induced Methods of Behaving that I get those "Feelings of being: Frustrated; Thwarted; Put Upon; Overwhelmed; Incapable; Unfulfilled; Weighed Down; Imprisoned; Unsatisfied; Rejected; Blocked; All Alone." Go Figure, Huh?

So Where does one Go and What does one Do and how does one Escape when finding themself trapped in "Those Feelings"; the Doldrums, the Quicksand? Good Question. The Ultimate Answer is always the Same: Seek the Highest Truth, Beauty, Goodness and Love. In other words, seek God's Will. God's Will is not a Barrier, it is not a Prison. Rather, it is The Ultimate Freedom, The Unending Voyage of Discovery, The Continuing Adventure of Finding and Becoming more and more Like God! God puts no limits upon us. We do That for Ourselves quite without need for any help, thank you very much...

We create our Own Barriers, our Own Prisons, our Own Limitations by focusing our attention primarily upon our Physical and Material wants. You know... when we are Telling God what we need in order to be happy and fulfilled instead of Asking what we need?

A Wise Teacher once asked, "Whose Will is it that you are really Seeking?"

It's a Good Question to Keep in Mind... All the time!

Don't ya Think?

Dear God,
I give You my Will. Undoubtedly You will do a better job with it than I. I can't even Begin to Imagine all the Possibilities that this choice may open, so just Surprise me OK? I'll try not to block Your Way so much this time. It is My Will that Your Will be done!
I'm going to have to remember to make this choice Continually, Aren't I? ....... Yeah, I thought so. OK, so... let's start with Right Now and go from here then.

You ALL are Within the Infinitely Loving Embrace of our Universal

The Sermon
***********
Have you ever felt like you have misplaced your Soul? Not Lost it really, because you know it's there Somewhere, ya just can't seem to Find it at the moment. Don't you Hate when that happens? Life seems so Frantically Inactive in those times, doesn't it? It's Probably sitting Right out in Front of you in Plain Sight and for some reason, your mind just isn't able to make the connection. The Harder and more Frenzied ya Look for it, the more it seems to Elude you... and then you sit down in resignation and let go of it, and There it Is... Right where your Gaze happens to rest... Right where you Put it down. Why couldn't you see it Before?

Why is there such a tendency for humans to keep their Soul under wraps... to keep it hidden from open view? Our Soul is our Repository for experiences of Truth, Beauty Goodness and Love. It is the Storehouse for our Hopes and our Dreams and also the Laboratory wherein they can be Realized. Wouldn't ya think we'd want to keep it out in the open All the time?

Isn't it Funny how when ego feels hurt, rejection or abandonment---real or imagined---the first thing it wants to do is barricade the Soul behind walls of anger, judgment or withdrawal? Not really Funny-Ha-Ha, but Funny-Odd... Funny-Strange. Times when we feel physical or emotional Pain are the times when we need the contents of our Own Soul and the company of Other Souls the Most. Wouldn't you think? But still we fall prey to our fears and our feelings of inadequacy. We Starve our Soul in isolation when we should instead be Nourishing it with the ever-available presence of God Within us and Within our Brothers and Sisters.

Once the Soul learns to spread it's wings and fly, isn't it a shame to keep it locked up in the small cage of ego? Open the door with Love and Compassion. Let your Soul Free to Soar in Love, in Light and in Life.

(From: The RSV Bible - James 2:18)
But someone may well say, "You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works."

(from: Emily Dickinson).
A word is dead when it is said. Some say.
I say it just, begins to live that day.

(from: Eagle Man; Mother Earth Spirituality 1990).
We two-leggeds can approach others of completely different cultures and creeds, in peace and support. We must shed our narrow-mindedness; we must stop exploiting one another....We are fortunate that modern technology allows communication with our so-called adversaries who, in reality, want peace as much as you and I do. Communication and universal understanding coupled with generosity and sharing can do more for world peace and the ultimate rehabilitation of Mother Earth than all of the weapons can do.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-103 Section-2)
Man tends to identify the urge to be self-serving with his ego--himself. In contrast he is inclined to identify the will to be altruistic with some influence outside himself--God. And indeed is such a judgment right, for all such nonself desires do actually have their origin in the leadings of the indwelling Thought Adjuster, and this Adjuster is a fragment of God. The impulse of the spirit Monitor is realized in human consciousness as the urge to be altruistic, fellow-creature minded. At least this is the early and fundamental experience of the child mind. When the growing child fails of personality unification, the altruistic drive may become so overdeveloped as to work serious injury to the welfare of the self. A misguided conscience can become responsible for much conflict, worry, sorrow, and no end of human unhappiness.

(From: Gandhi)
I hold that the true education of the intellect can only come through a proper exercise and training of the body. But unless the development of the mind and body goes hand in hand with a corresponding awakening of the soul, the former alone would prove to be a poor lopsided affair. By spiritual training I mean education of the heart.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-112 Section-5)
There is something real, something of human evolution, something additional to the Mystery Monitor, which survives death. This newly appearing entity is the soul, and it survives the death of both your physical body and your material mind. This entity is the conjoint child of the combined life and efforts of the human you in liaison with the divine you, the Adjuster. This child of human and divine parentage constitutes the surviving element of terrestrial origin; it is the morontia self, the immortal soul.

(from: Emily Dickinson).
The soul should always stand ajar. Ready to welcome the ecstatic experience.

(From: Aristotle)
Whatsoever that be within us that feels, thinks, desires, and animates, is something celestial, divine, and, consequently, imperishable.

(From: Oscar Wilde)
Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-130 Section-6)
But most valuable of all, your potential of real achievement is the spirit which lives within you, and which will stimulate and inspire your mind to control itself and activate the body if you will release it from the fetters of fear and thus enable your spiritual nature to begin your deliverance from the evils of inaction by the power-presence of living faith. And then, forthwith, will this faith vanquish fear of men by the compelling presence of that new and all-dominating love of your fellows which will so soon fill your soul to overflowing because of the consciousness which has been born in your heart that you are a child of God.

Quotes

(From: Stephen Hawking).
Even if there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules and equations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe? The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?

(From: The KJV Bible - Isaiah 61:1)
The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-103 Section-5)
It is fatal to man's idealism when he is taught that all of his altruistic impulses are merely the development of his natural herd instincts. But he is ennobled and mightily energized when he learns that these higher urges of his soul emanate from the spiritual forces that indwell his mortal mind.
It lifts man out of himself and beyond himself when he once fully realizes that there lives and strives within him something which is eternal and divine. And so it is that a living faith in the superhuman origin of our ideals validates our belief that we are the sons of God and makes real our altruistic convictions, the feelings of the brotherhood of man.
Man, in his spiritual domain, does have a free will. Mortal man is neither a helpless slave of the inflexible sovereignty of an all-powerful God nor the victim of the hopeless fatality of a mechanistic cosmic determinism. Man is most truly the architect of his own eternal destiny.

(from: Albert Schweitzer).
Day by day we should weigh what we have granted to the spirit of the world against what we have denied to the spirit of Jesus, in thought and especially in deed.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-103 Section-5)
But man is not saved or ennobled by pressure. Spirit growth springs from within the evolving soul. Pressure may deform the personality, but it never stimulates growth. Even educational pressure is only negatively helpful in that it may aid in the prevention of disastrous experiences. Spiritual growth is greatest where all external pressures are at a minimum. "Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." Man develops best when the pressures of home, community, church, and state are least. But this must not be construed as meaning that there is no place in a progressive society for home, social institutions, church, and state.

(From: Benjamin Franklin)
Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight.

(From: The KJV Bible - Isaiah 41:10)
"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-126 Section-4)
"Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil and learn to do good; seek justice, relieve the oppressed. Defend the fatherless and plead for the widow.
"Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, to bow myself before the Lord of all the earth? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, ten thousands of sheep, or with rivers of oil? Shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? No! for the Lord has showed us, O men, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to deal justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God?
"To whom, then, will you liken God who sits upon the circle of the earth? Lift up your eyes and behold who has created all these worlds, who brings forth their host by number and calls them all by their names. He does all these things by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power, not one fails. He gives power to the weak, and to those who are weary he increases strength. Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and I will help you; yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness, for I am the Lord your God. And I will hold your right hand, saying to you, fear not, for I will help you.”

The Sermon
***********
“fear not, for I will help you.”

It is not merely the knowledge of this Truth---that God “will help you”---that will make a lasting difference in one's personal experiences of life.

It is the Personal Experience of it in the course of life's challenging situations, Depending upon it with childlike Faith in it's absolute Reality, that transforms a person... that gives one the Courage to step toward their Dreams... that sustains one's Hopes through innumerable disappointments... that provides Inner Peace in spite of external conflict.

“fear not, for I will help you.”

Notice how that line doesn't say, I will do it For you. Prayers all too often seem to expect God to “Give me this.” or “Please do That.” or “Make me/them such and such.” Don't you think?

But the line DOES say, “I will Help you.” I will help YOU.

“fear not, for I will help you.”

There's an oft' quoted line (I'm sure you've heard it more than once) that says, “God helps those who help themselves.” Although it is often used as a justification or a judgment of some sort (ie: “I don't want to help you.” or “Get off yer butt and Do something, ya lazy bum.”), the more Loving way to look at it might be: Work towards something you care about and God will help you to do it the best way.

“fear not, for I will help you.”

I've come to the conclusion that I have to Ask for God's help if I want to be conscious of in fact Getting it. Not that I have to ask in order to get it, because I know through fact of personal experience that God helps me irregardless of my asking. But if I consciously Ask God for help as I approach a situation, then I am better able to recognize that help as it occurs... or at Least, in retrospect. ;-)

“fear not, for I will help you.”

Too often we don't recognize God's help because it may look different from what we thought we were asking for. We reject it because we egotistically want things to be done Our way, rather than soulfully desiring to discover God's way of doing things. God's way doesn't lead us TO disappointments (as ego so inordinately fears), it leads us THROUGH the disappointments inherent in a less than perfect comprehension of the Right way to do things.

There is Certain Satisfaction, Gratifying Fulfillment, and Reinforcing Validation that come directly from the experience of accomplishing something using God's Way, in synchrony with God's Will. The same cannot uniformly be said when one is inflexible and obstinate about enacting the shortsighted dictates of their Own self-centered will.

“fear not, for I will help you.”

Sure. It feels kinda' good to do some things “All By Yourself.” But it feels Incredibly Good to do them “All By Yourself with God.”

“fear not, for I will help you.”

With God Helping you, what on Earth is there to Fear?

*******************************************
