THE SENILITY PRAYER

God grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones that I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

I don't think I have ever done a Sunday Service about today's topic.
I think it is about time I did…

(From: Ham 12/30/01 - The Nashville TeaM)
Are you more loving, more tolerant, more accepting of yourselves and others this day than you were a year ago? Are you more peaceful in your hearts? Is the stress of living less a burden and more a joy each day? Is your happiness level rising? Are you more humble and secure in your place in the vast universe?

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-34 Section-6)
The consciousness of the spirit domination of a human life is presently attended by an increasing exhibition of the characteristics of the Spirit in the life reactions of such a spirit-led mortal, "for the fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance." Such spirit-guided and divinely illuminated mortals, while they yet tread the lowly paths of toil and in human faithfulness perform the duties of their earthly assignments, have already begun to discern the lights of eternal life as they glimmer on the faraway shores of another world; already have they begun to comprehend the reality of that inspiring and comforting truth, "The kingdom of God is not meat and drink but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit." And throughout every trial and in the presence of every hardship, spirit-born souls are sustained by that hope which transcends all fear because the love of God is shed abroad in all hearts by the presence of the divine Spirit.

(From: "The Merchant of Venice” - William Shakespeare)
The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
'T is mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown;
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway,
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God's,
When mercy seasons justice.

(From: Smiles)
For want of self-restraint many men are engaged all their lives in fighting with difficulties of their own making, and rendering success impossible by their own cross-grained un-gentleness; whilst others, make their way and achieve success by simple patience, equanimity, and self-control.

(From: Homer)
Do thou restrain the haughty spirit in thy breast, for better far is gentle courtesy.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-141 Section-3)
The Master displayed great wisdom and manifested perfect fairness in all of his dealings with his apostles and with all of his disciples. Jesus was truly a master of men; he exercised great influence over his fellow men because of the combined charm and force of his personality. There was a subtle commanding influence in his rugged, nomadic, and homeless life. There was intellectual attractiveness and spiritual drawing power in his authoritative manner of teaching, in his lucid logic, his strength of reasoning, his sagacious insight, his alertness of mind, his matchless poise, and his sublime tolerance. He was simple, manly, honest, and fearless. With all of this physical and intellectual influence manifest in the Master's presence, there were also all those spiritual charms of being which have become associated with his personality--patience, tenderness, meekness, gentleness, and humility.

(From: The RSV Bible - Proverbs 15:4)
A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

(From: Francois Fenelon)
It is only imperfection that complains of what is imperfect. The more perfect we are, the more gentle and quiet we become toward the defects of others.

(From: Saint Francis de Sales)
When you encounter difficulties and contradictions, do not try to break them, but bend them with gentleness and time.

(From: The RSV Bible - Corinthians I 4:21)
What do you wish? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love in a spirit of gentleness?

(From: Ham 12/30/01 - The Nashville TeaM)
There is nothing more valuable than love and all life experience will lead you to greater and greater love if you are truly seeking spiritual advancement. When you are rich in love, it is a possession, it is part of you, something which cannot be taken. It is something which colors all your life and transforms the most mundane reality into a beautiful, fantastic adventure full of charm and holiness.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 11:29)
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

(From: Han Suyin)
There is nothing stronger in the world than gentleness.

The Sermon
***********
There is no greater power than the Power of Genuine Gentleness.

Gentleness…
        …Commands without commanding.
        …Leads without controlling.
        …Comforts without Words.
        …Accomplishes without stress.
        …Enables Growth without fear.

Gentleness…
        …Attracts cooperation.
        …Radiates Kindness.
        …Emanates Comfort.
        …Reveals Inner Strength.
        …Betokens Assurance.

I wonder why it is that Gentleness ever got misinterpreted as being synonymous with weakness?

Must be an EGO thing… ya Think?

Gentleness…
        Is Worth Cultivating.

Let's… Shall we?

A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5, and Ryan, 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake.
Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. “If Jesus were sitting here, He would say 'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.'”
Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, "OK Ryan, you be Jesus!"

(From: Helen Keller)
Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.

(From: Thomas Troward)
Our repeated failure to fully act as we would wish must not discourage us. It is the sincere intention that is the essential thing, and this will in time release us from the bondage of habits which at present seem almost insuperable.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-140 Section-3)
In gaining an entrance into the kingdom of heaven, it is the motive that counts. My Father looks into the hearts of men and judges by their inner longings and their sincere intentions.

(From: Emulan 12-23-01 - The Woods Cross TeaM)
When we live intentionally we practice being fully present and aware in each moment. We experience spiritual poisons, but also do we experience spiritual fruits. We challenge loneliness with a hopeful attitude. We challenge hate with the belief in prevailing love. We challenge prejudice with actions toward justice. We challenge depression with faith. We challenge our self-loathing with our belief in a divine parentage that loves us with the power of eternity.

(From: The RSV Bible - Hebrews 4:12)
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

(From: Abraham 1/6/02 - The Woods Cross TeaM)
You definitely have control in how you perceive this mortal life and your place in it. You have control over your actions, over your own spiritual destiny. You have control over how you influenced others lives. You really do have great responsibility in this life. Do not live as though you must conform to the divine plan or suffer the consequences. Live as though you are part of a magnificent spiritual team, who is planning and experiencing destiny.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-1)
Habits which favor religious growth embrace cultivated sensitivity to divine values, recognition of religious living in others, reflective meditation on cosmic meanings, worshipful problem solving, sharing one's spiritual life with one's fellows, avoidance of selfishness, refusal to presume on divine mercy, living as in the presence of God. The factors of religious growth may be intentional, but the growth itself is unvaryingly unconscious.

(From: Abraham 12-30-01 - The Woods Cross TeaM)
When you focus on living intentionally, living on purpose, you are committed to having any experience that comes your way, good or bad. You are committed to being willing to experience and learn and grow from it.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-133 Section-8)
"Whatsoever your hand finds to do, do that with all your might."

(From: William A. Foster)
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

The Sermon
***********
Have you ever found that, Life is most Satisfying, most Gratifying, and most Rewarding, when lived With Purpose, For a Purpose, and On Purpose?

But then, it kinda' depends on what that purpose Is, doesn't it? I mean, it Is possible to live life for wrong purposes, wouldn't you say? Heck, That's rather obvious, otherwise we'd be living in a more perfect world. Material Wealth and Power can be totally Useless… depending upon what it is one Does with them… what Purpose they serve.

“Why am I Here? What the Heck (or other appropriate expletive) is my Purpose?”

I used to ask myself that All the Time! I'd think it was One thing and then it would turn out looking like it was something else entirely. So then I would think “AHA! So THAT'S my purpose!” only to discover that That wasn't it Either. This can seem a fairly repetitive Process, can't it? At some point I remember realizing that, as I grew, so did my Purpose. What I Think my purpose is Today, is likely to be rather different from what I might think it is say… five years from now. Of course, I could always stop learning and growing and then I'd have a solid grasp on what my purpose was, but… what purpose would That serve? Not much really.

Maybe our Purpose is to continually, With Purpose, For a Purpose, and On Purpose---Discover our true Purpose. Ya Think? But then we could even go one step further than that and say that, Our True Purpose is to continually, With Purpose, For a Purpose, and On Purpose---Discover God's Perfect Purpose for us.

I've been Trying, but… I really can't Think of a better Purpose than that.

Can You?

A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year old daughter and said, "Would you like to say the blessing?"
"I wouldn't know what to say," the girl replied.
"Just say what you hear Mommy say," the wife answered.
The daughter bowed her head and said, "Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Just last Sunday as I looked out of the window here at “The Garden”, while doing the Sunday Service, it almost looked as if Spring was already in the process of happening. The ground was bare and damp and I got to thinking that it wouldn't be too long before the Spring chores would be calling for attention.

But as I look out the window this Morning, the 10+ new inches of glistening Snow that hangs upon the trees and blankets the ground seems to tell me that I still may have a little time to finish up the Winter projects that are in the works presently. Go Figure!

I guess in this world we can only Really be Sure of, our own level of devotion to God and his Will.

How Sure are we? Sure enough?

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-176 Section-3)
"When you have by faith once established yourself as a son of God, nothing else matters as regards the surety of survival. But make no mistake! this survival faith is a living faith, and it increasingly manifests the fruits of that divine spirit which first inspired it in the human heart.”

(From: Sathya Sai Baba)
Having come upon the world stage as 'man', one should act the role effectively. The tree is known by the fruit. The human body is the temple of God. He is installed there. Yearn for the realization of this Truth, seek to discover it and derive bliss therefrom - that is bhakthi (devotion, the path of love of God).

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-165 Section-5)
The welfare of the soul is more than food and drink; the progress in the spirit is far above the need of raiment. When you are tempted to doubt the sureness of your bread, consider the ravens; they sow not neither reap, they have no storehouses or barns, and yet the Father provides food for every one of them that seeks it. And of how much more value are you than many birds! Besides, all of your anxiety or fretting doubts can do nothing to supply your material needs. Which of you by anxiety can add a handbreadth to your stature or a day to your life? Since such matters are not in your hands, why do you give anxious thought to any of these problems?

(From: Brian Adams)
Learn the art of patience. Apply discipline to your thoughts when they become anxious over the outcome of a goal. Impatience breeds anxiety, fear, discouragement and failure. Patience creates confidence, decisiveness, and a rational outlook, which eventually leads to success.

(From: Ham 1/13/02 - The Nashville TeaM)
When your heart is constantly being fed with spiritual energy, it is not wanting for other humans to gratify it. When one's heart is connected to the spiritual source of all the universe, the people surrounding one may be subject to their human foibles and problems just as you yourself are, but this does not change your charitable heart.

(From: The RSV Bible - Luke 12:27-32)
Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass which is alive in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O men of little faith! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be of anxious mind. For all the nations of the world seek these things; and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things shall be yours as well. "Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-5 Section-4)
The religions of revelation allure men to seek for a God of love because they crave to become like him. But religion is not merely a passive feeling of "absolute dependence" and "surety of survival"; it is a living and dynamic experience of divinity attainment predicated on humanity service.

(From: Sathya Sai Baba)
Practice silence. Then, you can more easily recognize the galloping of the mind behind worldly happiness. Restrain its movements; turn it inside, into the calm lake of bliss that lies deep in the heart! Get over fear by establishing your mind in the One, for fear can arise only when there is another.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-2)
Jesus portrayed the profound surety of the God-knowing mortal when he said: "To a God-knowing kingdom believer, what does it matter if all things earthly crash?" Temporal securities are vulnerable, but spiritual sureties are impregnable. When the flood tides of human adversity, selfishness, cruelty, hate, malice, and jealousy beat about the mortal soul, you may rest in the assurance that there is one inner bastion, the citadel of the spirit, which is absolutely unassailable; at least this is true of every human being who has dedicated the keeping of his soul to the indwelling spirit of the eternal God.

(From: Mark Twain)
I admire the serene assurance of those who have religious faith. It is wonderful to observe the calm confidence of a Christian with four aces.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-176 Section-3)
“You who are God-knowing and gospel-believing have already received the assurances of eternal life. Since your lives have been lived in the spirit and for the Father, nothing can be of serious concern to you. Kingdom builders, the accredited citizens of the heavenly worlds, are not to be disturbed by temporal upheavals or perturbed by terrestrial cataclysms. What does it matter to you who believe this gospel of the kingdom if nations overturn, the age ends, or all things visible crash, since you know that your life is the gift of the Son, and that it is eternally secure in the Father? Having lived the temporal life by faith and having yielded the fruits of the spirit as the righteousness of loving service for your fellows, you can confidently look forward to the next step in the eternal career with the same survival faith that has carried you through your first and earthly adventure in sonship with God.”

The Sermon
***********
One's Sureness about something usually reflects in the results of that Surety. Do you ever notice that? You know, like when you are just Sure something is going to happen and then … it really Does?

You've heard the term “Self fulfilling Prophecy” haven't you? Kinda like That…

Unfortunately in this world, it is all too much the Easier to feel sure of the negatives rather than the Positives. Yeah!… ya Think? Do you ever catch yourself with a negative sureness? “Catching” oneself is Good, Actually… because Then a person has the opportunity of making a Choice.
“Should I choose Negatively or Positively?”
“Should I let my ego choose or let my Soul choose?”

It's a Tough Choice, but Someone's gotta make it.
In spite of the obvious answer, for some reason it seems just So much the Simpler Choice to let the ego choose. Why Is that do you think? I mean, it should be rather Apparent which is the better choice… wouldn't you say? That “Simpler Choice” always seems to hide it's inherent negative complexities until After the fact though… and then, the inevitabilities start surfacing. Don't you hate when that happens? ;-)

Positive Sureness (Assurance), is Equally Effective at bringing about Positive results. At least this is true, I've found, when expectations are not placed upon others to bring About the positive results… only upon one's Self.

The Personal Assurance of God's Love and Parental Watchcare gives one a certain Surety of Positive Results… with Patience, of Course, And, with the understanding that the most Positive Results are Not necessarily going to look like the ones we may have originally expected, but they will be at Least as Good and Likely Better than we had Hoped for. God WANTS us to have all that is True, Beautiful and Good. God WANTS us to experience Love in Every Way possible.

Some people persistently evangelize that “You Can't be Sure of Anything except death and paying taxes.” I am Sure of my experience that that is not entirely True. You can be Sure of God's Love and Mercy. Of That you CAN be sure… doubt Not!

An unquestioned Surety of your Divine Parent's Unconditional Love for you will also carry with it a Certainty of Survival… not only On this world, but After this world as Well. That understanding can and Does change Everything about Life and the Way one lives it. It is Immortality, with mortal death being nothing more than going to sleep Here, and waking up There without the handicaps of mortal existence.

Is it Really Possible to be so Sure of God's Loving Involvement in one's life? Sure! Just Make Sure.

Be Sure.

Humor of the Week

At Sunday School they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny, a child in the kindergarten class, seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs.
Later in the week his mother noticed him lying as though he were ill, and said, "Johnny what is the matter?"
Little Johnny responded, "I have a pain in my side. I think I'm going to have a wife!"

Quotes

(From: Albert Einstein)
The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.

(From: The American Standard Bible - Hebrews 6:11and 12)
And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

(From: M.C. Escher)
"So let us then try to climb the mountain, not by stepping on what is below us, but to
pull us up at what is above us, for my part at the stars; amen"

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-5 Section-1)
If mortal man is wholeheartedly spiritually motivated, unreservedly consecrated to the doing of the Father's will, then, since he is so certainly and so effectively spiritually endowed by the indwelling and divine Adjuster, there cannot fail to materialize in that individual's experience the sublime consciousness of knowing God and the supernal assurance of surviving for the purpose of finding God by the progressive experience of becoming more and more like him.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-34 Section-6)
The Spirit never drives, only leads. If you are a willing learner, if you want to attain spirit levels and reach divine heights, if you sincerely desire to reach the eternal goal, then the divine Spirit will gently and lovingly lead you along the pathway of sonship and spiritual progress. Every step you take must be one of willingness, intelligent and cheerful co-operation. The domination of the Spirit is never tainted with coercion nor compromised by compulsion.
And when such a life of spirit guidance is freely and intelligently accepted, there gradually develops within the human mind a positive consciousness of divine contact and assurance of spirit communion; sooner or later "the Spirit bears witness with your spirit (the Adjuster) that you are a child of God."

(From: Albert Einstein)
The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me with the joy of living are goodness, beauty, and truth. To make a goal of comfort or happiness has never appealed to me; a system of ethics built on this basis would be sufficient only for a herd of cattle.

(From: Albert Einstein)
Try not to become a man of success but rather to become a man of value.

(From: The RSV Bible - Hebrews 10:22-25)
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

(From: Mack R. Douglas)
The achievement of your goal is assured the moment you commit yourself to it.

The Sermon
***********
Last week's Sunday Service had as it's subject: “Sureness.”

Human Sureness is a State of Mind and of Conviction.

Divine Assurance (this week's theme), is an Experience of Soul; a Personal Experience of Certainty. Not Assurance as in a pledge, or declaration, or guarantee… as, “You have my assurance…” but rather the Assurance of being Loved, Accepted, of being Cared for, that God is holding your Hand and will guide and teach you whenever you remember to ask.

Sureness may be Validated, but it is Divine Assurance that provides, that bestows, True Validation.

There can be Sureness without Love, but Divine Assurance Depends upon Love.

A child with loving parent(s) feels Secure, feels assured that they will survive in this world… One who also recognizes and accepts God as their Loving Parent Is Secure, senses the Divine Assurance that they will survive also Beyond this world.

Ignorance restricts Sureness, Knowledge enables and stimulates it.

Doubt inhibits Divine Assurance, Trust and Living Faith in God's Love Assure it.

Put your hand in God's… walk with Divine Assurance.

It's a Good thing.
