I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #327, is …Certainty

Quotes
*******
(From: Mark Twain)
Religion consists in a set of things which the average man thinks he believes and wishes he was certain of.

(From: Frank Hughes)
I will say this about being an optimist-- even when things don't turn out well, you are certain they will get better.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-146 Section-3)
“True and genuine inward certainty does not in the least fear outward analysis, nor does truth resent honest criticism. You should never forget that intolerance is the mask covering up the entertainment of secret doubts as to the trueness of one's belief. No man is at any time disturbed by his neighbor's attitude when he has perfect confidence in the truth of that which he wholeheartedly believes. Courage is the confidence of thoroughgoing honesty about those things which one professes to believe. Sincere men are unafraid of the critical examination of their true convictions and noble ideals."

(From: Sir Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626)
If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts; but if he will be content to begin with doubts he shall end in certainties.

(From: King Stanislas I of Poland)
To believe with certainty we must begin by doubting.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-102 Section-7)
The God-knowing individual is not one who is blind to the difficulties or unmindful of the obstacles which stand in the way of finding God in the maze of superstition, tradition, and materialistic tendencies of modern times. He has encountered all these deterrents and triumphed over them, surmounted them by living faith, and attained the highlands of spiritual experience in spite of them. But it is true that many who are inwardly sure about God fear to assert such feelings of certainty because of the multiplicity and cleverness of those who assemble objections and magnify difficulties about believing in God. It requires no great depth of intellect to pick flaws, ask questions, or raise objections. But it does require brilliance of mind to answer these questions and solve these difficulties; faith certainty is the greatest technique for dealing with all such superficial contentions.

(From: Ham 2/8/1998 - the Nashvillee TeaM)
Most humans experience fear in association with uncertainty. Certainty is a valuable, repeating lesson. Uncertainty and the fear associated with it will continue to reoccur until you can set aside uncertainty for certainty.
Faith is certain. Faith is sure of the future. When you have strength of faith, truly strong faith, uncertainty is just a temporary fleeting emotion. Like going down a roller coaster ride, uncertainty is a thrill rather than a stress producing, anxiety ridden chronic-disease promoting problem. When you ascend the roller coaster, you are certain that you will arrive safely at the end, so the fear is removed. And so it is with life, you know for certain that you will get to the next level of spiritual attainment. How you will get there is uncertain, and so it is thrilling to experience. But, there is never a fear that you will not attain your next level.
So it is with life's attainments. If you are certain that you are on the right path, then you are certain of success. This certainty is only found in your heart, only you can be sure of the path you are taking. Once you have settled on your path, then indeed success is assured and you should have no fear or anxiety about it. The uncertainties along the way should just be a roller coaster ride, thrilling but not fearful.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-103 Section-8)
The certainty of the God-knowing religionist should not be disturbed by the uncertainty of the doubting materialist; rather should the uncertainty of the unbeliever be mightily challenged by the profound faith and unshakable certainty of the experiential believer.

(From: The RSV Bible - James 3:17-18)
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity. And the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-102 Section-6)
Convictions about God may be arrived at through wise reasoning, but the individual becomes God-knowing only by faith, through personal experience. In much that pertains to life, probability must be reckoned with, but when contacting with cosmic reality, certainty may be experienced when such meanings and values are approached by living faith. The God-knowing soul dares to say, "I know," even when this knowledge of God is questioned by the unbeliever who denies such certitude because it is not wholly supported by intellectual logic. To every such doubter the believer only replies, "How do you know that I do not know?"

(From: Aaron 2/15/1994 - the Spokane TeaM)
Know always that as you step forward into uncertainty and break free from the confines of settledness that you are upheld ever so lovingly by Him Who Upholds All. When you extend beyond your human levels you have all of everything within you to make the leap into a new phase, another realm, a larger arena of personality expression.

(From: Stella Terrill Mann)
Whatever God's dream about man may be, it seems certain it cannot come true unless man cooperates.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
You can:
…Be Certain of God's Love for You.
…Be Certain of Your Love and Devotion to God.
…Be Certain that God's Will, will come to pass whether or not you choose to take part in it.
…Be Certain that just about everything Else in life… is relatively Uncertain.

The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
You are my Security through all uncertainty!

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

My Favorite T.V. Show Inspired Today's Service… well… it didn't really Inspire it, but it Did get me to Thinking about it…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #328 , is …Being a Survivor.

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: The RSV Bible - Isaiah 45:20)
"Assemble yourselves and come, draw near together, you survivors of the nations! They have no knowledge who carry about their wooden idols, and keep on praying to a god that cannot save.

(From: John F. Kennedy)
Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and success of liberty.

(From: Elyon 9/19/1999 - the North Idaho TeaM)
As you progress both as a culture and individually, you begin to go beyond physical survival to the survival of your soul, of your personality. That is when the spiritual element infuses you, when you begin to grasp the importance of the survival of your personality. Then you begin to see relationship as more than fighting for possession of things, more than the survival of your ego, more than greed. You go beyond those things to the things that matter for your personality survival and your personality development.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson)
It is very easy in the world to live by the opinion of the world. It is very easy in solitude to be self-centered. But the finished man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude. I knew a man of simple habits and earnest character who never put out his hands nor opened his lips to court the public, and having survived several rotten reputations of younger men, honor came at last and sat down with him upon his private bench from which he had never stirred.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-28 Section-6)
Time is the one universal endowment of all will creatures; it is the "one talent" intrusted to all intelligent beings. You all have time in which to insure your survival; and time is fatally squandered only when it is buried in neglect, when you fail so to utilize it as to make certain the survival of your soul. Failure to improve one's time to the fullest extent possible does not impose fatal penalties; it merely retards the pilgrim of time in his journey of ascent. If survival is gained, all other losses can be retrieved.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-133 Section-7)
But the survival character of a soul is not fostered by attempting to secure peace of mind at any price, by the surrender of noble aspirations, and by the compromise of spiritual ideals; rather is such peace attained by the stalwart assertion of the triumph of that which is true, and this victory is achieved in the overcoming of evil with the potent force of good.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-5 Section-5)
Eternal survival of personality is wholly dependent on the choosing of the mortal mind, whose decisions determine the survival potential of the immortal soul. When the mind believes God and the soul knows God, and when, with the fostering Adjuster, they all desire God, then is survival assured.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-1 Section-3)
The technique of survival is embraced in those adjustments of the human will and those transformations in the mortal mind whereby such a God-conscious intellect gradually becomes spirit taught and eventually spirit led.

(From: Teacher Tenare 3/22/98 Northern California Coast TeaM)
As you live in the world, you know that you have many choices before you. There will always be a choice; there will always be a decision to make; there will always be a moral issue; and there will always be a value to choose. And, as you make the choices that bring you pain, in your pain you are humbled, your pride is broken, and your heart is opened up. As you age and reach the level of full maturity, you can view yourself as a ship that has borne many storms, that has borne many scars, that has entered many dangerous, reef-ridden harbors...and has survived. This is encouraging, for you can take great comfort in the fact that you can survive. Survival is your goal, survival in this world and survival beyond this world. This is the task.

(From: The Lockhorns)
My goal in life is to survive. Everything else is just a bonus.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
The word Survival means different things to different people.

To some it may mean having enough Food to allow them to live yet one more day…
To some it may mean having a place of Shelter…
To some it may mean having a source of Income…
To some it may mean being able to pay the bills…
To some it may mean having the things that everyone else has…

These are some concerns of Material Survival and seem somewhat unavoidable if not inevitable in the material life of a human being. Material Survival is Obviously a very important part of existence, but it needn't be an All Consuming Obsession … not at the expense of Soul Survival, Spirit Survival, Personality Survival. But all too often Material Survival Does become an All Consuming Obsession, and then it is Always at the expense of the other, the Greater, the Truer Survival… Eternal Survival.

Certainly, both Material And Eternal Survival are important aspects of Life as we may experience it, but if I had ever to choose between them, I should hope that I would have the Wisdom to choose the latter over the former.

Two good questions to ask one's self from time to time are…
“What am I doing to assure my Eternal Survival?” and…
“What might I still cling to that could allow my Eternal Survival to be Vulnerable?”

(Luke 12:29-34)
And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be of anxious mind. For all the nations of the world seek these things; and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things shall be yours as well. "Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms; provide yourselves with purses that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
May Your Supreme Gift of Survival be one day accepted and embraced by All of Your Children.

You ALL are Within the Infinitely Loving Embrace of our Universal
Parent,

The Creator's Infinite Love to all of You,

To me, Personal Destiny isn't a thing that an individual is “Inevitably Stuck With” in Spite of what they may choose.

Rather, I see Individual Destiny as something Altogether Dependent upon personal choice…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, # 329, is …Destiny

Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-156 Section-5)

“Let every man make sure that the intellectual and moral foundations of character are such as will adequately support the superstructure of the enlarging and ennobling spiritual nature, which is thus to transform the mortal mind and then, in association with that re-created mind, is to achieve the evolvement of the soul of immortal destiny. Your spirit nature--the jointly created soul--is a living growth, but the mind and morals of the individual are the soil from which these higher manifestations of human development and divine destiny must spring. The soil of the evolving soul is human and material, but the destiny of this combined creature of mind and spirit is spiritual and divine."

(From: William Jennings Bryan)
Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.

(From: Abraham 6/12/2000 - the Woods Cross TeaM)
Think not your eternal destiny is mapped out and you are only to run the course. You are a co-creator in your divine destiny and the efforts and choices you make most definitely influence that destiny.

(From: Alexis Carrel (1873 - 1944)
To accomplish our destiny it is not enough to merely guard prudently against road accidents. We must also cover before nightfall the distance assigned to each of us.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-48 Section-7)
24. The destiny of eternity is determined moment by moment by the achievements of the day by day living. The acts of today are the destiny of tomorrow.
25. Greatness lies not so much in possessing strength as in making a wise and divine use of such strength.

(From: Daniel 6/27/93 - S. E. Idaho TeaM)
As you work through life, there are many paths that you can take. As you work each day to know your being, to know the First Source and Center, you are creating within yourselves, and your path, an overall picture of who and what you are. And this is what I mean by saying you are creating your own destiny. If you should decide to sit like a rock on the side of the road, that is creating your own destiny of never growing. If, however, you decide to be that pebble that rolls down the hill and continues on the journey, then you are creating that destiny for ascension and for growth.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-156 Section-5)
Spiritual destiny is dependent on faith, love, and devotion to truth--hunger and thirst for righteousness--the wholehearted desire to find God and to be like him.
Do not become discouraged by the discovery that you are human. Human nature may tend toward evil, but it is not inherently sinful. Be not downcast by your failure wholly to forget some of your regrettable experiences. The mistakes which you fail to forget in time will be forgotten in eternity. Lighten your burdens of soul by speedily acquiring a long-distance view of your destiny, a universe expansion of your career.
Make not the mistake of estimating the soul's worth by the imperfections of the mind or by the appetites of the body. Judge not the soul nor evaluate its destiny by the standard of a single unfortunate human episode. Your spiritual destiny is conditioned only by your spiritual longings and purposes.

(From: Sir Winston Churchill)
It is a mistake to try to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-143 Section-2)
"Verily, verily, I say to you, he who rules his own self is greater than he who captures a city. Self-mastery is the measure of man's moral nature and the indicator of his spiritual development. In the old order you fasted and prayed; as the new creature of the rebirth of the spirit, you are taught to believe and rejoice. In the Father's kingdom you are to become new creatures; old things are to pass away; behold I show you how all things are to become new. And by your love for one another you are to convince the world that you have passed from bondage to liberty, from death into life everlasting.

(From: Albert Schweitzer)
I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.

The Sermon
***********
After searching for “Destiny” Quotes for Today's Service, and then organizing them in such a way as to provide a certain amount of Theme continuity, and then after reading them all together for the first time… I came to the conclusion that anything else I might add in the form of a Sermon would do little to improve upon the “Message” already delivered by the “Quotes.”

So instead of writing a Sermon, I decided to just borrow a line that Jesus would use from time to time when He taught…

Said Jesus, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of his own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

On Tuesday of this past week, a Dear and Loving Friend and Supporter, Susan Kimsey, Graduated from this “Vale of Tears” that we live upon. This Beautiful and Sincere Soul departed this world and on the third day resumed her Journey of Love and Unselfish Service in the “Mansions” of Our Divine Parent. Susan's Generosity made possible so Much of what we have been able to accomplish here at “The Light and Life Sanctuary” and it was in Memory of her mother, Faith, that we dedicated our First “Fruits of the Spirit Garden” as the “Faith Garden.” We will Miss You Here Dear Sister! Bon Voyage until we meet again!!

Also this week I would like to express a special Thanks to our brother Ron Besser for his incredible amount of unselfish work in the making available of an excellent Search Engine at the “tmarchives” website. It is now the source I use to get the “TeaM” quotes for the weekly Sunday Services. Thank You Ron!!!

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #330, is …Adversity

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: Ham 1991 - the Woods Cross TeaM)
Adversity requires reaction. This reaction builds strength and stamina in character. Each person experiences adversity for this purpose. If life were easy and blissful, decisions, hard decisions, would not be forced to be made. These essential decisions must be made in order for there to be soul strengthening.

(From: Seneca (5 BC - 65 AD), Epistles)
Fire is the test of gold; adversity, of strong men.

(From: Henry Fielding (1707 - 1754)
Adversity is the trial of principle. Without it a man hardly knows whether he is honest or not.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-48 Section-7)
16. You cannot perceive spiritual truth until you feelingly experience it, and many truths are not really felt except in adversity.

(From: Horace (65 BC - 8 BC)
Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents, which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.

(From: Abraham 12/3/99 - S. E. Idaho TeaM)
Without adversity you would not be able to test your faith, your hope, your courage.

(From: The RSV Bible - Job 36:15)
He delivers the afflicted by their affliction, and opens their ear by adversity

(From: Seneca (5 BC - 65 AD)
To see a man fearless in dangers. untainted with lusts, happy in adversity, composed in a tumult, and laughing at all those things which are generally either coveted or feared, all men must acknowledge that this can be from nothing else but a beam of divinity that influences a mortal body.

(From: The RSV Bible - Isaiah 30:20-21)
And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself any more, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-159 Section-3 (quoting Jesus)
“ I do not promise to deliver you from the waters of adversity, but I do promise to go with you through all of them.”

(From: The RSV Bible - Proverbs 17:17)

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

(From: Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC)
Friendship makes prosperity more shining and lessens adversity by dividing and sharing it.

(From: The KJV Bible - Hebrews 13:1-3)
Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

(From: Socrates (469 BC - 399 BC)
Remember that there is nothing stable in human affairs; therefore avoid undue elation in prosperity, or undue depression in adversity.

(From: Anne Bradstreet (1612 - 1672)
If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-2)
Jesus portrayed the profound surety of the God-knowing mortal when he said: "To a God-knowing kingdom believer, what does it matter if all things earthly crash?" Temporal securities are vulnerable, but spiritual sureties are impregnable. When the flood tides of human adversity, selfishness, cruelty, hate, malice, and jealousy beat about the mortal soul, you may rest in the assurance that there is one inner bastion, the citadel of the spirit, which is absolutely unassailable; at least this is true of every human being who has dedicated the keeping of his soul to the indwelling spirit of the eternal God.

(From: Andronason 9/15/2000 - S. E. Idaho TeaM)
…when you understand at a deep and profound level that the will of God for your life is without question the most joyful, the most satisfying, the most easy, flowing choice which you can make; then, although you may experience adversity, you will never lack for that perfect peace which turns the bitterness of adversity into the sweetness of spiritual growth.

(From: Leighton)
Adversity is the diamond dust Heaven polishes its jewels with.
