When the famous guru sat down to worship each evening, the house cat would get in the way and distract the worshippers. So he ordered that the cat be tied up during the evening worship.

After the guru died, the cat continued to be tied during evening worship. And, when the cat expired, another cat was acquired so that it could be duly tied during evening worship.

Centuries later, learned treatises were written by the guru's scholarly disciples on the liturgical significance of tying up a cat while worship is performed.

Welcome by: Pastor Daniel

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Ah yes… the First Sunday of the new year 2007.

Let the Celebrations of New Hope Begin!

In reflecting upon this recently past spell of celebrations, and what and why we celebrate the things that we do, I was reminded of how differently different people celebrate things.

There are Cultural differences, of Course… There are Religious differences, Indeed… There are Continental, National, Regional, State, City, and even Neighborhood differences in the way that people celebrate things, Truly.

Individual Families (both nuclear and chosen), tend to celebrate differently than other families even though they celebrate the same event… sometimes just in little ways and sometimes in striking ways.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #533, is Tradition…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Some traditions are certainly fun and enjoyable, are they not? They can truly be Occasions for Celebration! Traditions can bring people together, and they can Hold people together. In Celebration, Traditions can even Grow and Evolve right along with the people who celebrate them.

I think it is when traditions start to become rigid and inflexible that they begin to lose their allure, their Charm, their fun and their Joy… their True Sacredness.

Traditions that Bind… that disempower, imprison or enslave, I feel have lost their Universal Value, their ability to reach Everyone. They become restrictive to individual spiritual growth and progress rather than opening new doors unto it… they become controlling rather than continuously illuminating… boundaries rather than avenues… limitations rather than opportunities.

When one has a heartfelt reason for Celebrating a tradition, the traditional value is immeasurable and well worth preserving. When one has lost sight of a good reason for Celebrating a tradition, perhaps it is time to either discard it, or perhaps… even… heck… why not… start a New Tradition worth Celebrating. Keep as much or as little as you want of the old one.

Opportunities for Celebration are a Good thing!

Quotes
*******
(From: Teacher Daniel - 5/7/2000– the S.E. Idaho TeaM)
Always there is the desire in human nature to preserve the past in the form of tradition and custom. Always is there a resistance to change and evolution. This desire to retain the past has many benefits and is not in itself a negative reality. Indeed is life the delicate balance between the preservation of past good and the evolution of future good. Sometimes the tide seems to turn towards the preservation of the past, towards the conservative side of reality, and then the tide swings in the other direction and reverses itself so that forward momentum seems about to take the day. Always in mortal life there is movement back and forth between these poles, the pole of conserving the past and the pole of evolving the future. This is part of the reason that your lives cannot be fairly described as balanced and certainly not placid for long.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-66 Section-6)
Slavery to tradition produces stability and co-operation by sentimentally linking the past with the present, but it likewise stifles initiative and enslaves the creative powers of the personality.

(From: Teacher Daniel - 5/7/2000– the S.E. Idaho TeaM)
It is not just a perversity of human nature to desire to continue that which one is comfortable with, for in many cases or much of the time, there is value in continuing those traditions, mores, ways of doing things. They are the tried and tested results of previous experimentations with change. The problem that occurs however, is when an individual or a group reaches the conclusion that all desirable ways of doing things have been exhausted, and only traditional ones retain any value. This precludes the possibility of new and better ways of doing things, of thinking, of acting, of being.

(From: W. Somerset Maugham (1874 - 1965)
Tradition is a guide and not a jailer.

(From: Admiral Hyman G. Rickover)
The untrodden path is choked by the weeds of tradition. Be not afraid to cut through.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-180 Section-5)
Neither tradition nor a ceremonial system of formal worship can atone for the lack of genuine compassion for one's fellows.

(From: The Buddha)
Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-195 Section-10)
The praiseworthy desire to preserve traditions of past achievement often leads to the defense of outgrown systems of worship. The well-meant desire to foster ancient thought systems effectually prevents the sponsoring of new and adequate means and methods designed to satisfy the spiritual longings of the expanding and advancing minds of modern men.

(From: Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965)
A love of tradition has never weakened a nation, indeed it has strengthened nations in their hour of peril; but the new view must come, the world must roll forward.

(From: D. H. Lawrence (1885 - 1930)
It is a fine thing to establish one's own religion in one's heart, not to be dependent on tradition and second-hand ideals. Life will seem to you, later, not a lesser, but a greater thing.

Welcome by: Pastor Daniel

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

While doing this morning's hot-tub meditation trying to get a topic for today's service I “heard” the word 'Listen'. As I silently rolled the word around in my mind searching for a direction to go with it, I heard it again. “Listen.” Yes, I got it… 'Listen' is an Excellent topic, thank you so Much! …and then I heard it yet once again. “What?” s an Excellent topic, thank you so Much! …and then I heard it yet once again.

“What?”
“You mean Me?”
“Oh… Yeah… OK.”

So I did…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #534, is listen…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
I'm pretty sure that most people are personally somewhat familiar with the following methods used when applying the word 'listen'… at least as a second person experience if not first person (sometimes as the receiver…sometimes as the giver).

“LISTEN” - shouted/yelled/screamed---often producing just the opposite results.

“Listen” - spoken with particular emphasis---produces rather less than the desired results around 2/3'rds to 3/4's of the time.

“listen” - spoken softly/gently/in a whisper---usually (but not always), gets others to want to hear what it is that you have to say.

(listen) - silently/attentively/genuinely---results in more information, deeper understanding and greater insight.

listen---Maybe I should do it more and say it less.

Am I alone in this?

Quotes
*******
(From: Robert C. Murphy)
To be listened to is, generally speaking, a nearly unique experience for most people. It is enormously stimulating. It is small wonder that people who have been demanding all their lives to be heard so often fall speechless when confronted with one who gravely agrees to lend an ear. Man clamors for the freedom to express himself and for knowing that he counts.

(From: Epictetus (55 AD - 135 AD)
We have two ears and one mouth so we may listen more and talk the less.

(From: Robert Frost (1874 - 1963)

Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence.

(From: T. T. Munger)
A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but after a while he gets to know something.

(From: Plutarch (46 AD - 120 AD)
Know how to listen, and you will profit even from those who talk badly.

(From: Albert Guinon (1863 - 1923)
There are people who, instead of listening to what is being said to them, are already listening to what they are going to say themselves.

(From: M. Scott Peck)
You cannot truly listen to anyone and do anything else at the same time.

(From: Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809 - 1894)
It is the province of knowledge to speak and it is the privilege of wisdom to listen.

(From: Dorothy Sarnoff)
Make sure you have finished speaking before your audience has finished listening.

(From: Dr. Joyce Brothers)
Listening, not imitation, may be the sincerest form of flattery.

(From: Paul Tillich (1886 - 1965)
The first duty of love is to listen.

(From: Rebecca West (1892 - 1983)
There was a definite process by which one made people into friends, and it involved talking to them and listening to them for hours at a time.

(From: Karl Menninger)
Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. The friends who listen to us are the ones we move toward. When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand.

(From: Roy Moody)
The greatest motivational act one person can do for another is to listen.

(From: Jiddu Krishnamurti)
So when you are listening to somebody, completely, attentively, then you are listening not only to the words, but also to the feeling of what is being conveyed, to the whole of it, not part of it.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-148 Section-6)
While the speech of God spoken from the whirlwind was a majestic concept for the day of its utterance, you have already learned that the Father does not thus reveal himself, but rather that he speaks within the human heart as a still, small voice, saying, `This is the way; walk therein.' Do you not comprehend that God dwells within you, that he has become what you are that he may make you what he is!"

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
None of us will ever accomplish anything excellent or commanding except when he listens to this whisper which is heard by him alone.

Dear God,
Help me to learn to Listen better. To myself, that I may the better say what I truly mean… to others, that I may the better understand and love them… and to You that I may the better experience what is True, Beautiful, Good and Loving.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

It has been a while since I have used “Brotherhood” as the topic for a Sunday Service.
Today it just felt like it was time again.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #535, is Brotherhood…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-50 Section-5)
When mortals learn to think and begin to profit by experience, they become philosophical--they start out to reason within themselves and to exercise discriminative judgment. The society of this age becomes ethical, and the mortals of such an era are truly becoming moral beings. Wise moral beings are capable of establishing human brotherhood on such a progressing world. Ethical and moral beings can learn how to live in accordance with the golden rule.

(From: Jane Wyman)
The opportunity for brotherhood presents itself every time you meet a human being.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-52 Section-6)
Mutual understanding and fraternal love are transcendent civilizers and mighty factors in the world-wide realization of the brotherhood of man.

(From: Arthur Powell Davies)
The world is now too small for anything but brotherhood.

(From: Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 - 1968), "Strength to Love")
The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood.

(From: Adlai E. Stevenson Jr. (1900 - 1965)
I believe that if we really want human brotherhood to spread and increase until it makes life safe and sane, we must also be certain that there is no one true faith or path by which it may spread

(From: Mark Twain (1835 - 1910), Following the Equator)
The universal brotherhood of man is our most precious possession, what there is of it.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-84 Section-7)
The family is the fundamental unit of fraternity in which parents and children learn those lessons of patience, altruism, tolerance, and forbearance which are so essential to the realization of brotherhood among all men.

(From: Tyron Edwards)
Whoever in prayer can say, "Our Father," acknowledges and should feel the brotherhood of the whole race of mankind.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-103 Section-5)
It lifts man out of himself and beyond himself when he once fully realizes that there lives and strives within him something which is eternal and divine. And so it is that a living faith in the superhuman origin of our ideals validates our belief that we are the sons of God and makes real our altruistic convictions, the feelings of the brotherhood of man.

(From: The RSV Bible - Peter I 2:17 )
Honor all men. Love the brotherhood.

The Sermon

[Note: In the following offerings, the word “brother” is intended to be inclusive of both the words, brother and sister.]
[But then… You'd have known what I had meant, wouldn't you? ;-)]

Many speak of friendship… and show it not.
Be a friend.

Many speak of brotherhood… and live it not.
Be a Brother.

Many talk of Love… and give it not.
Simply Love.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

It seems like just about every day there is a Lesson to be learned.
Do I learn it? Or do I not?

The topic of today's Sunday Service, # 536, is “the Test”…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-133 Section-6)
"The human soul, when matured, ennobled, and spiritualized, approaches the heavenly status in that it comes near to being an entity intervening between the material and the spiritual, the material self and the divine spirit. The evolving soul of a human being is difficult of description and more difficult of demonstration because it is not discoverable by the methods of either material investigation or spiritual proving. Material science cannot demonstrate the existence of a soul, neither can pure spirit-testing. Notwithstanding the failure of both material science and spiritual standards to discover the existence of the human soul, every morally conscious mortal knows of the existence of his soul as a real and actual personal experience."

(From: Walt Whitman (1819 - 1892)
Wisdom is not finally tested in the schools, Wisdom cannot be pass'd from one having it to another not having it, Wisdom is of the soul, is not susceptible of proof, is its own proof.

(From: John Ruskin (1819 - 1900)
I believe that the first test of a truly great man is his humility. I don't mean by humility, doubt of his power. But really great men have a curious feeling that the greatness is not of them, but through them. And they see something divine in every other man and are endlessly, foolishly, incredibly merciful.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-28 Section-6)
When the spiritual tests of greatness are applied, the moral elements are not disregarded, but the quality of unselfishness revealed in disinterested labor for the welfare of one's earthly fellows, particularly worthy beings in need and in distress, that is the real measure of planetary greatness.

(From: Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 - 1945)
The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.

(From: Lantarnek - 1/07/07 – The North Idaho TeaM)
It is recorded many centuries ago by the one named Paul that one is never tempted beyond their means to withstand, that the testing of God is never to cause you to fail, but rather to strengthen your abilities as you are at the time.

(From: Lois McMaster Bujold, Shards of Honor)
...tests are a gift. And great tests are a great gift. To fail the test is a misfortune. But to refuse the test is to refuse the gift, and something worse, more irrevocable, than misfortune.

(From: Robert J. Sawyer (1960 - ), "Calculating God", 2000)
You can't choose the ways in which you'll be tested.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-165 Section-6)
"In the time of testing, a man's soul is revealed; trial discloses what really is in the heart.

(From: Agnes Macphail)

Do not rely completely on any other human being, however dear. We meet all life's greatest tests alone.

(From: Walter Pater (1839 - 1894)
What we have to do is to be forever curiously testing new opinions and courting new impressions.

(From: Vernon Suanders Law)
Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the tests first, the lessons afterwards.

(From: John Dewey (1859 - 1952)
There is no discipline in the world so severe as the discipline of experience subjected to the tests of intelligent development and direction.

(From: Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)
Truth is what stands the test of experience.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-28 Section-6)
Trust is the crucial test of will creatures. Trustworthiness is the true measure of self-mastery, character.

(From: Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926)
For one human being to love another; that is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation.

(From: Richard Bach)
Here is the test to find whether your mission on earth is finished. If you're alive, it isn't.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
The Purpose of “The Test” is to show us the progress of our own personal growth in Love, Understanding, Maturity and Wisdom.

There is no Pass or Fail, only progress or postponement thereof.

The Good news is…
You get to grade your own test.

The bad news is…
You are the only one who Can grade Your Test.

Are you Growing?
