Humor of the Week

Two priests decided to go to Hawaii on vacation. They were determined to make this a real vacation by not wearing anything that would identify them as clergy. As soon as the plane landed, they headed for a store and bought some really outrageous shorts, shirts, sandals, sunglasses, etc. The next morning they went to the beach dressed in their "tourist" garb.

They were sitting on beach chairs, enjoying a drink, the sunshine, and the scenery when a drop dead gorgeous blonde in a tiny bikini came walking straight towards them. They couldn't help but stare. As the blonde passed them, she smiled and said, "Good morning, Father, Good morning, Father," nodding and addressing each of them individually, then passed on by.

They were both stunned. How in the world did she know they were priests? The next day, they went back to the store, bought even more outrageous outfits. These were so loud, you could hear them before you even saw them. Once again, they settled on the beach in their chairs to enjoy the sunshine.

After a while, the same gorgeous blonde-wearing a string bikini this time came walking toward them. Again she approached them and greeted them individually: "Good morning, Father, Good morning, Father," and started to walk away. One of the priests couldn't stand it and said, "Just a minute, young lady."

"Yes," she replied. "We are priests, and proud of it, but I have to know: how in the world did you know?"

"Father," she replied, "it's me! Sister Margaret!"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Since my computer keeps freezin' up on me this morning, I will just say a quick Heartfelt Thank You to everyone for your support, and for just Being here!!!

Are you ever worried about Success?

Does the prospect of Failure loom ever present in your consciousness?

Quotes
*******
(From: The RSV Bible - Psalm 73:26)
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-1 Section-7)
Of Jesus it was truly said, "He trusted God." As a man among men he most sublimely trusted the Father in heaven. He trusted his Father as a little child trusts his earthly parent. His faith was perfect but never presumptuous. No matter how cruel nature might appear to be or how indifferent to man's welfare on earth, Jesus never faltered in his faith. He was immune to disappointment and impervious to persecution. He was untouched by apparent failure.

(From: John Keats)
Don't be discouraged by a failure. It can be a positive experience. Failure is, in a sense, the highway to success, inasmuch as every discovery of what is false leads us to seek earnestly after what is true, and every fresh experience points out some form of error which we shall afterwards carefully avoid.

(From: Thomas J. Watson)
Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It's quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn't as all. You can be discouraged by failure - or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because, remember that's where you will find success.

(From: George Eliot (1819 - 1880)
I'm proof against that word failure. I've seen behind it. The only failure a man ought to fear is failure of cleaving to the purpose he sees to be best.

(From: Sir Winston Churchill)
Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.

(Florence Scovel Shinn)
Every great work, every great accomplishment, has been brought into manifestation through holding to the vision, and often just before the big achievement, comes apparent failure and discouragement.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-160 Section-4)
The career of a God-seeking man may prove to be a great success in the light of eternity, even though the whole temporal-life enterprise may appear as an overwhelming failure, provided each life failure yielded the culture of wisdom and spirit achievement.

(From: Thomas A. Edison)
Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

(From: Abraham Lincoln)
The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just.

(From: Mickey Rooney)
You always pass failure on the way to success.

(From: Anthony J. D'Angelo)
The only real failure in life is one not learned from.

(From: Robert Browning)
A minute's success pays the failure of years.

The Sermon
***********
Have you ever felt like a Failure?
What IS a failure Anyway?

Today's "Society" would be happy to tell you what "failure" is.
Societal convention would have us believe that Failure is not having what everyone Else has, and not Being what everyone else Is. Society doesn't want to control so much what you Do, as what Direction you go, how you think, your Loyalties. Shame and Guilt are the Penalties for not living up to Societies Standards! This is Ego's Arena.

What if "failure" was just an Indicator… not of all the ways one has failed along the path of Life, but an indicator of direction? Like God saying, "OK now… This way." That's the way it has become for me… a Redirection of sorts. Find the Gift in the experience and continue on… or in very difficult circumstances, continue on, and the Gift will reveal itself later. God places a Gift in every experience… seemingly Good, or seemingly Bad. Success is Finding it… Success if Finding God in your life… Success is Having God in your life! Years of Apparent failure may all turn into the Greatest Success with the addition of just One More Key Experience… just One More Gift Discovered.

Devoting ones self to Discovering God's Will for You… IS Success. Knowing that God wants Only the Best for YOU, and then Daily discovering what that Is for you… That is Success. When one thing fails, you try Another. You Listen for the "still small voice" that says: "Walk This Way." You make adjustments… you look for the Gift.

Seek Truth, Appreciate Beauty, Emulate Goodness. See Failure for the Illusion that it Is.

Be the Best Child of God you can Be, and Success is Assured!

Failure? It's just a Roadmap.

(From: Sidney Madwed)
Poor is the man who does not know his own intrinsic worth and tends to measure everything by relative value. A man of financial wealth who values himself by his financial net worth is poorer than a poor man who values himself by his intrinsic self worth.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 6:26)
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

(From: Albert Einstein)
Try not to become a man of success but rather to become a man of value.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-2 Section-7)
Truth is coherent, beauty attractive, goodness stabilizing. And when these values of that which is real are co-ordinated in personality experience, the result is a high order of love conditioned by wisdom and qualified by loyalty.

(From: Ayn Rand)
Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds from the achievement of one's values.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-4)
In physical life the senses tell of the existence of things; mind discovers the reality of meanings; but the spiritual experience reveals to the individual the true values of life. These high levels of human living are attained in the supreme love of God and in the unselfish love of man. If you love your fellow men, you must have discovered their values. Jesus loved men so much because he placed such a high value upon them. You can best discover values in your associates by discovering their motivation. If some one irritates you, causes feelings of resentment, you should sympathetically seek to discern his viewpoint, his reasons for such objectionable conduct. If once you understand your neighbor, you will become tolerant, and this tolerance will grow into friendship and ripen into love.

(From: Ignazio Silone)
On a group of theories one can found a school; but on a group of values one can found a culture, a civilization, a new way of living together among men.

(From: Ham 6/23/2002 - the Nashville TeaM)
People tend not to question the reality that is taught, the world view that is passed from one generation to the next. But every so often, there is a generation of original thinkers born into this world and these people are instrumental in changing the course of history in actual fact. You, my friends, are so absorbed in your immediate problems and your immediate struggles that you fail to see that you are truly part of something much larger and much more important, far reaching, and noble. For as you work and worry and struggle with life, you are actualizing higher values than those who have gone before you. You are bringing forth the fruit of a growing tree, a tree with roots deep in the human soil, but with branches reaching up to heaven receiving life from the greater spiritual realms.

The Sermon
***********
You are Supremely Valued by God.
How well do your Personal Values Reflect that?

As our Values Grow,
So Grows our Value.

What do you Value above All?

Life… What's it worth to you?

Just a little something to ponder…

Dear God,
It is only through Your Eyes that I may recognize True Value. Show me Father.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

In Next weeks Service I will be doing another Update on the Progress going on here at the property. It's been a Busy, Busy Summer so far.

This morning, Minister Jill and I are doing another "Tag-TeaM" Sunday Service. I will be doing the Humor of the Week, this very Welcome, and the Quotes, and Jill will be following up and finishing with Today's Sermon and the Prayer. (I was carving a small head out of a very hard little ivory nut this week for a carving contest and slipped with the chisel, puncturing my left index finger… so it being rather stiff and sore yet, typing is still somewhat of a chore for me. :-o)

Anyways… Hope you find it of some use in your daily life… your Church Within!

Quotes
*******
(From: Ham 7/14/2002 - the Nashville TeaM)
When the Master said, you will know them by their fruits, he spoke with great seriousness about how love dominates, transforms, and makes useful the lives of his followers. He asked Peter the simple question, do you love me, three times. And each time, Peter responded yes, then the Master followed with instruction about what that love should do. And each person who loves God finds then in their hearts some instruction about how to live, how to be with the other children on this world.

(From: Martin Luther King Jr.)
I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.

(From: Deepak Chopra)
The spiritual meaning of love is measured by what it can do. Love is meant to heal. Love is meant to renew. Love is meant to bring us closer to God.

(From: Abraham 7/15/02 - Woods Cross TeaM )
Everyday many individuals struggle to attain some sort of acceptance or love. Poor self-esteem seems to drive some individuals toward various activities that would bring self-worth. Much of this, however, is fleeting. Much of this searching for love and acceptance is even more damaging to individuals, who already feel very little worth, love and acceptance. I am in awe at the influence mortals have over one another. It really is a living energy, bad or good, nonetheless a living energy. There are many who know not their status in Father's Kingdom, and so much rely upon their fellows to reflect to them their true being.

(From: Rabbi Julius Gordon)
Love is not blind - it sees more, not less. But because it sees more, it is willing to see less.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 5:43-48)
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-143 Section-2)
"Verily, verily, I say to you, he who rules his own self is greater than he who captures a city. Self-mastery is the measure of man's moral nature and the indicator of his spiritual development. In the old order you fasted and prayed; as the new creature of the rebirth of the spirit, you are taught to believe and rejoice. In the Father's kingdom you are to become new creatures; old things are to pass away; behold I show you how all things are to become new. And by your love for one another you are to convince the world that you have passed from bondage to liberty, from death into life everlasting.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 22:37)
And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets."

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-112 Section-2)
The universe fact of God's becoming man has forever changed all meanings and altered all values of human personality. In the true meaning of the word, love connotes mutual regard of whole personalities, whether human or divine or human and divine. Parts of the self may function in numerous ways--thinking, feeling, wishing--but only the co-ordinated attributes of the whole personality are focused in intelligent action; and all of these powers are associated with the spiritual endowment of the mortal mind when a human being sincerely and unselfishly loves another being, human or divine.

(From: Jean Anouilh)
Love is, above all, the gift of oneself.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-143 Section-2)
You are destined to live a narrow and mean life if you learn to love only those who love you. Human love may indeed be reciprocal, but divine love is outgoing in all its satisfaction-seeking. The less of love in any creature's nature, the greater the love need, and the more does divine love seek to satisfy such need. Love is never self-seeking, and it cannot be self-bestowed. Divine love cannot be self-contained; it must be unselfishly bestowed.

(From: Henry David Thoreau)
There is no remedy for love but to love more.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Ya know, after reading the quotes for today's service, I sat here and thought about love as it is "marketed" in our society… a commodity, a real Need. How many songs talk about love and how we just can't live without a certain person's love; can't go on without it; how devastated we are because someone abandoned us?

Have you ever listened to one of those songs yearning for love, and changed it in your mind to a song you sing to your Heavenly Father? Try it some time. It makes one realize that we have the right idea about love but we have turned our yearning to the wrong individual. Sing along with your favorite love song, only sing it to God instead of the human your heart aches for. What happens? Do you end up feeling sadder and sadder, or do you end up feeling filled with a new sense of Being loved? I encourage you to try this little exercise for yourself. Experience God's love in answer to your yearning for love. It is There immediately as you sing your song of desire to be loved.

Now think back to the past week. Did you have to interact with someone at work whom you "just can't stand" or some idiot on the road who nearly caused you an accident? Or…? Is there someone you Kinda like, but in other ways you envy them or resent them?

How can we apply the lessons in today's quotes to those situations? Their "behaviors" may be irritating, but have you ever stopped at those moments of irritation and asked yourself Who they are? Have you "walked in their shoes"? Do you know how much or how little genuine, unconditional love they received growing up and in their adult life? Do you know what Really makes them so negative… or so successful that you envy them?

Let us try this next week to give them what they yearn for, by reflecting on what we All yearn for…DIVINE LOVE. Let us see those individuals through God's eyes. If we do, He will guide us to give them words of compassionate understanding, words of Genuine encouragement. And as we let His love flow through us to them, we too will receive His gift of unconditional love to fill our own void.

Let us also take time to look at our own feelings of envy, jealousy, or resentment in our reactions to some individuals. When we have those types of reactions to another, it often reflects that we are too critical of ourselves and do not love ourselves as God loves us. Let us not only love our brothers and sisters this next week with God's merciful and unconditional love, but let us Also love ourselves with the same Divine forgiveness and nurturing.

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
Guide my thoughts, words, and deeds to express your Divine Love to all my brothers and sisters, and to myself, each and every day. I want my will to be your will in each moment.

May we all discover His Divine Love and Live it this next week more perfectly.

Humor of the Week
*****************
A man is stumbling through the woods totally drunk when he comes upon a preacher baptizing people in the river. He proceeds to walk into the water and subsequently bumps into the preacher.
The preacher turns around and is almost overcome by the smell of alcohol, whereupon he asks the drunk, "Are you ready to find Jesus?"
The drunk answers, "Yes, I am."

So the preacher grabs him and dunks him in the water. He pulls him up and asks the drunk, "Brother, have you found Jesus?"
The drunk replies, "No, I haven't found Jesus."

The preacher shocked at the answer, dunks him into the water again for a little longer this time. He again pulls him out of the water and asks again, "Have you found Jesus, my brother?"
The drunk again answers, "No, I haven't found Jesus."

By this time the preacher is at his wits end and dunks the drunk in the water again---but this time holds him down for about 30 seconds and when he begins kicking his arms and legs he pulls him up. The preacher again asks the drunk, "For the love of God, have you found Jesus?"
The drunk wipes his eyes and catches his breath and says to the preacher, "Are you sure this is where he fell in?"

The Light and Life Sanctuary - Update
**********************************
Last week I promised an update on what's been going here since the last update. Here it is.

First off… you might have noticed that we changed the name from the "Light and Life Garden" or "The Light and Life Retreat Center" or "______"… to "The Light and Life Sanctuary." I think the word Sanctuary, in All of it's definitions, more fully fits the Purpose of what we are doing here than any of the others. We Want it to be a Place of Peaceful and Loving Sanctuary. The series of Gardens we are gradually but surely building, will be "The Fruits of the Spirit Gardens"; the first of which is, as you know, "The Faith Garden."

Speaking of The Faith Garden, it is Doing Very Well this year. The raspberries have been producing as much as 2 lbs of fruit per day since early July and still have a week or two before they are finished for the season. The 7 Blueberry bushes, although no where's Near full grown, are filled with choice berries. And the Italian Plum tree, only planted last fall, has an ample quantity of fruits getting plumper and awaiting their ripening time. The birds benefited mostly by the few Cherries that ripened this season, and All the other trees---pears, plums, cherries, apples---have almost doubled in size since last year. The new Kiwi Plant is adapting well and we just picked up another one on close-out to keep it company.

The additional Raspberry Bed I mentioned previously is completed and the transplanted raspberry plants are surviving ad should begin producing next year. In the process of building the new bed, I put in a stairway and made the whole upper two-thirds of the garden more easily accessible and walkable. I'm now in the process of finishing up the Grading of the lower third of the Faith Garden (Yards and Yards of added topsoil and Logs to keep it in the right places). I have also started clearing and grading the areas adjacent to the Faith Garden so that we may begin the Next Garden.

In September or October, we will be having a professional Logger come in to clear all but the best Pine trees on the property. This will make it Much easier to develop the rest of the property and will open up the incredible View we have here. I had originally thought that I would do all of the logging myself as I went, but I discovered that it would probably take me Way Too Long and I wouldn't have time, or energy, to do anything Else. The lumber isn't worth all that much in today's market, but we may get enough for it to help replace the roof on the main building before it's too late.

All is Well and the Labor Continues…

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Some years ago I did a Sunday Service about an optimistic little boy who was put in a room filled with Horse manure and a shovel to see what he would do in an hour's time. After a short time, the boy was observed methodically and with Vigor, digging gleefully in the manure with the shovel. When asked what he was doing, the little boy said, "With all this manure, there's Gotta be a Horsey in here Someplace!!!"

Today's Service is somewhat along that line…

Quotes
*******
(From: Ham 7/21/2002 - the Nashville TeaM)
This evening, let us speak of spiritual progress. What is it, how do you gauge your progress? How do you know you are growing truly in the spirit?
You who experience this growth actually feel the difference and acknowledge the changes taking place within you. You see your love expanding and being refined at the same time. It is easier to love and to be loved every day. You know you are growing when you feel the pain of inner change occur and then become comfortable and part of who you are.
There are only two roads, one is forward one is a stagnation that leads to gradual deterioration of faith. Some people are too afraid to grow. They are afraid to admit fault, afraid to be wrong, they are afraid to change as though by changing it would belittle their status now. These people hold on to life as if it were some kind of stage filled with props, never changing and their role is replayed day after day, night after night.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-131 Section-10)
The mind of man is human, mortal, but the spirit of man is divine, immortal. God is not only all-powerful but also all-wise. If our earth parents, being of evil tendency, know how to love their children and bestow good gifts on them, how much more must the good Father in heaven know how wisely to love his children on earth and to bestow suitable blessings upon them.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-146 Section-2)
        7. The cry of the righteous is the faith act of the child of God which opens the door of the Father's storehouse of goodness, truth, and mercy, and these good gifts have long been in waiting for the son's approach and personal appropriation. Prayer does not change the divine attitude toward man, but it does change man's attitude toward the changeless Father. The motive of the prayer gives it right of way to the divine ear, not the social, economic, or outward religious status of the one who prays.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 12:6-18)
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; never be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-117 Section-4)
God's gifts--his bestowal of reality--are not divorcements from himself; he does not alienate creation from himself, but he has set up tensions in the creations circling Paradise. God first loves man and confers upon him the potential of immortality--eternal reality. And as man loves God, so does man become eternal in actuality. And here is mystery: The more closely man approaches God through love, the greater the reality--actuality--of that man. The more man withdraws from God, the more nearly he approaches nonreality--cessation of existence. When man consecrates his will to the doing of the Father's will, when man gives God all that he has, then does God make that man more than he is.

The Sermon
***********
Why is it so hard for me to remember to look for the Gift in the Problem?

Do you Look for the Gift in the Problem?

There Is one ya' know. Always. Without exception. It is an Invariable Truth.

Sure… it never seems like it at the Time… sometimes Years go by without being able to recognize what the Gift Was. In fact, one may Miss the fact that they received a Gift at All, unless they are willing to look back and reevaluate any painful or frightening past experiences.

How many times have you thought about your Worst Past Experience… now I'm not talking about one you may be going through at the moment ;-), rather… a Distant or Semi-distant experience… you know the one, the one that seemed to just ruin Everything… the---if only That hadn't happened, then everything else would have turned out Perfect---one? Have you ever considered what your life would have been like if that circumstance had turned out differently? Sure, they do Movies with Angels about things like that… but have you applied it to Yours?

If you Have, then try looking at it from a Different perspective as Well. Look at the Path it actually Put you upon. Struggle, Indeed! Pain… Suffering… perhaps. What experiences have you Cherished Since then that you wouldn't give up for the World? Any? You know… Love… Children… Any old thing. ;-) They would not have happened.

Exceptional experiences in the Present, are an indirect but Certain result of everything that Ever happened, good And bad, in the past… yes, even of those Worst experiences.

But… on the same token… if you are struggling with something right Now… then it is also a result of All Past Experiences as Well. Well… unless you have already discovered the Gift from them, then they only contribute to the Excellent Experiences. Today's problems come from missing the Gift in a Past Problem. You are being given another opportunity to get that Gift. It's an Important one!

Do you Trust God… or do you think He's just looking for any opportunity to play tricks on you? If you Know God, like I'm Sure you Do… then of Course you know in your Soul that He wants Only what is the very Best for you, Right? Well… DUHH! Do you think God would really let you experience things Awful if there was not Value of some sort available in the experience? I don't.

Sure… I Used to. I used to say, "God, Why are You Doing this to me?" (every once in a while I still catch myself saying that… how silly of me <g>) More often now though… I remember to say, "Father, why are You Doing this *For* me?" "What opportunity are You giving me… once again?" "What did I miss the Last time that You would still like me to have?" "What is the Gift in this seemingly insurmountable difficulty?" I Know it's Here. [There's Gotta be a Horsey in here Someplace! ;-)]

Look for the Gift. Because it is the Gifts found in adversity, that lead to and make possible the most Cherished Inner Dreams… the Fondest Longings… the Most Fulfilling Purpose. If you don't think you can trust Your own relationship with God, then Trust God's Relationship with You… the Beloved Child… God's Beloved Child. (and work on Your relationship with God).

If you DO Trust Your relationship with God, then… What's to Worry?
Just start Looking for the Gift! You Know it's There… why put it Off?

As soon as ya' start looking intently for the "BIG Gift" you begin finding all the little inconspicuous gifts that God has inevitably Strewn along your Path. The Little ones often grow up to be Momentous Gifts with time and use.

Of course… one must Also stay on their OWN Path to find the Gifts of God most Rewarding for Themselves. Ya' get on someone Else's path---even if only with one foot ;-)---and Your Personal Gifts are unavailable to you. More Likely you'll Trip over them and curse them for being in the way. They cannot be found with only partial or shared concentration… it takes your Full and Undivided Attention on your own path.

Look for Your Gifts! Follow your Dreams! Learn Your Lessons! Trust Your Heavenly Parent!

Have Faith in God's Benevolence… and especially in God's Love for YOU!

Walk the Walk…

Find the Gifts!

The Prayer

Dear God,
Is it time for me to get my Prescription checked? My Vision doesn't seem to be as clear as it could be.

You ALL are Within the Infinitely Loving Embrace of our Universal
Parent,

The Creator's Infinite Love to all of You,
Pastor Daniel
