The trouble with lies was that once started, the fiction had to be continued, and it was hard always to be remembering details that you had made up upon the spur of the moment.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within. You are the Temple. You are the Congregation. Any and All Truth is the Gospel. The Divine Spirit within you is your True Minister.

So much of our personal world is all about our own individual perception.
No part more so than our perception of…

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-152 Section-6)
Jesus taught the appeal to the emotions as the technique of arresting and focusing the intellectual attention. He designated the mind thus aroused and quickened as the gateway to the soul, where there resides that spiritual nature of man which must recognize truth and respond to the spiritual appeal of the gospel in order to afford the permanent results of true character transformations.

(From: Charles Victor Cherbuliez)
What helps luck is a habit of watching for opportunities, of having a patient, but restless mind, of sacrificing one's ease or vanity, of uniting a love of detail to foresight, and of passing through hard times bravely and cheerfully.

(From: Alfred North Whitehead (1861 - 1947)
We think in generalities, but we live in detail.

(From: Eric Schmidt, University of Pennsylvania Commencement Address, 2009)
Success is really about being ready for the good opportunities that come before you. It's not to have a detailed plan of everything that you're going to do. You can't plan innovation or inspiration, but you can be ready for it, and when you see it, you can jump on it.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-2 Section-7)
Philosophers commit their gravest error when they are misled into the fallacy of abstraction, the practice of focusing the attention upon one aspect of reality and then of pronouncing such an isolated aspect to be the whole truth.

(From: Krishnamurti)
When we talk about understanding, surely it takes place only when the mind listens completely-- the mind being your heart, your nerves, your ears- when you give your whole attention to it.

(From:
Honore De Balzac (1799 - 1850)

Imagination helps bring out the realism of every detail and only sees the beauties of the work.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-1)
The soil essential for religious growth presupposes a progressive life of self-realization, the co-ordination of natural propensities, the exercise of curiosity and the enjoyment of reasonable adventure, the experiencing of feelings of satisfaction, the functioning of the fear stimulus of attention and awareness, the wonder-lure, and a normal consciousness of smallness, humility. Growth is also predicated on the discovery of selfhood accompanied by self-criticism — conscience, for conscience is really the criticism of oneself by one's own value-habits, personal ideals.

(From: Anthony J. D'Angelo, The College Blue Book)
The greatest gift that you can give yourself is a little bit of your own attention.

(From: Paulo Cuelho, The Alchemist)
If you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it. And if you improve on the present, what comes later will also be better.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-112 Section-2)
Parts of the self may function in numerous ways — thinking, feeling, wishing — but only the co-ordinated attributes of the whole personality are focused in intelligent action; and all of these powers are associated with the spiritual endowment of the mortal mind when a human being sincerely and unselfishly loves another being, human or divine.

(From: Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)
My religion consists of a humble admiration of the unlimitable superior who reveals Himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble minds. That deeply emotional conviction of the presence of a superior reasoning power, which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe, forms my idea of God

(From: Mies van der Rohe)
God is in the details.

(From: Isaac Newton (1642 - 1727)
If I have ever made any valuable discoveries, it has been owing more to patient attention, than to any other talent.

(From: Tryon Edwards (1809 - 1894)
The secret of a good memory is attention, and attention to a subject depends upon our interest in it. We rarely forget that which has made a deep impression on our minds.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-4)
Love is infectious, and when human devotion is intelligent and wise, love is more catching than hate. But only genuine and unselfish love is truly contagious. If each mortal could only become a focus of dynamic affection, this benign virus of love would soon pervade the sentimental emotion-stream of humanity to such an extent that all civilization would be encompassed by love, and that would be the realization of the brotherhood of man.

(From: John F. Kennedy (1917 - 1963)
So, let us not be blind to our differences - but let us also direct attention to our common interests and to the means by which those differences can be resolved.

The Sermon
***********
We each have our own particular, peculiar, unique, set of Details that we give our Attention to… that we Focus on. To say that someone pays no Attention to Detail in actuality means that they do not pay Attention to the same Details that We ourselves happen Focus upon.

One should not necessarily expect, for example, the Scientist to Focus upon the same Details as say… the Artist. …or the Athlete and the Farmer. …or the Minister and the Politician, to name but a very few. Nor would you expect the Child to pay Attention to the same Details as the Teen or the Adult or the Senior… Would you? Males and Females… They inherently Focus on different Details… not by choice so much as by their very nature. Combine any two or three or four or more personal characteristics and the focus upon Details becomes increasingly more and more different.

Wouldn't it be boring if we all Focused on and paid Attention to all the same Details and no others? Think about it…

Life… it's All in the Details!

Stubbornness is also determination. It's simply a matter of shifting from "won't power" to "will power."

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within. You are the Temple. You are the Congregation. Any and All Truth is the Gospel. The Divine Spirit within you is your True Minister.

Sometimes it is the hardest thing in the world to find…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #820, is Determination…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Is there something that you would Really like to accomplish… or something you feel you really Need to do for yourself? Maybe it is to become involved in something Important to you… or maybe it is something that is important to your physical health, or personal well-being?

It's usually not very difficult to identify at least one or two of those things hanging about our personal to-do list. Can't You think of a few?

One of those for me was quitting smoking Tobacco… it was a Big one. I was pretty much a smoke whenever I'm awake sorta' person for 35 years. 4 years ago June 3
rd I finally found the Determination I needed to quit. The Determination was for the longest time, Impossible to find! It didn't matter how much I wanted or thought I needed to quit, it just was Not Happening. I had prayed for it often enough I thought, but still it eluded me… And then all of a sudden like, it was just There. Though many tried, no one gave it to me… no one else Could give it to me. It Had to come from within. Only there may Determination be discovered and embraced and nurtured.

There was of course a reciprocal repercussion that happened when I gave up smoking… eating, drinking and gaining weight to be specific. But hey! What's 80 to 100 extra pounds? I won the personal battle against Tobacco! For some time now I have been trying to find that ever elusive Determination to lose the weight I gained since the time I quit smoking. The Determination to change my eating habits was for the longest time, Impossible to find! It didn't matter how much I wanted or thought I needed to quit eating unhealthily, it just was Not Happening. Though my health issues were multiplying at an alarming rate, the Determination to take that first, then second, then third step Would Not appear. I had prayed for it often enough I thought, but still it eluded me.

Then… All of a Sudden… there it was again. Again many advised, but Still no one Could give it to me… nor could I artificially create the Determination. It Had to come from within… and it could only be found there if I did not stop looking and praying. Prayers aren't always answered right away it seems… and sometimes we just aren't ready enough. But when we Are, the tools will be available. In almost 4 weeks I have now lost over 25 lbs of the 80-100 that I am Determined to lose.

Determination… it's one of those “Seek and You shall find” things… but often it turns up while you aren't Looking. Never will it turn up though if you Quit looking.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-155 Section-5)
The acceptance of the traditional religions of authority presents the easy way out for man's urge to seek satisfaction for the longings of his spiritual nature. The settled, crystallized, and established religions of authority afford a ready refuge to which the distracted and distraught soul of man may flee when harassed by fear and tormented by uncertainty. Such a religion requires of its devotees, as the price to be paid for its satisfactions and assurances, only a passive and purely intellectual assent.
And for a long time there will live on earth those timid, fearful, and hesitant individuals who will prefer thus to secure their religious consolations, even though, in so casting their lot with the religions of authority, they compromise the sovereignty of personality, debase the dignity of self-respect, and utterly surrender the right to participate in that most thrilling and inspiring of all possible human experiences: the personal quest for truth, the exhilaration of facing the perils of intellectual discovery, the determination to explore the realities of personal religious experience, the supreme satisfaction of experiencing the personal triumph of the actual realization of the victory of spiritual faith over intellectual doubt as it is honestly won in the supreme adventure of all human existence—man seeking God, for himself and as himself, and finding him.

(From: Richard M. DeVos)
If I had to select one quality, one personal characteristic that I regard as being most highly correlated with success, whatever the field, I would pick the trait of persistence. Determination. The will to endure to the end, to get knocked down seventy times and get up off the floor saying, "Here comes number seventy-one!"

(From: Buddha)
“Those who really seek the path to Enlightenment dictate terms to their mind. Then they proceed with strong determination.”

(From: Tommy Lasorda)
The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in determination.

(From: Og Mandino (1923 - 1996)
Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-144 Section-4)
Prayer will lead the mortals of earth up to the communion of true worship. The soul's spiritual capacity for receptivity determines the quantity of heavenly blessings which can be personally appropriated and consciously realized as an answer to prayer.

(From: Rosalind Sussman Yalow)
We must believe in ourselves or no one else will believe in us; we must match our aspirations with the competence, courage, and determination to succeed.

(From:
Thomas Fuller)

“An invincible determination can accomplish almost anything and in this lies the great distinction between great men and little men.”

(From: Samuel Johnson)
“If your determination is fixed, I do not counsel you to despair. Few things are impossible to diligence and skill. Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance.”

(From: Anthony Robbins)
“Determination is the wake-up call to the human will”

(From: Denis James Whitcomb Riley)
“Continuous, unflagging effort, persistence and determination will win. Let not the man be discouraged who has these.”

(From: Daisaku Ikeda)
“The determination to win is the better part of winning.”

(From: Ralph Marston)
“You've done it before and you can do it now. See the positive possibilities. Redirect the substantial energy of your frustration and turn it into positive, effective, unstoppable determination.”

(From: George Sheehan)
“Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be”

(From: Les Brown)
“If you set goals and go after them with all the determination you can muster, your gifts will take you places that will amaze you.”

(From: Mahatma Gandhi)
“Exercise of faith will be the safest where there is a clear determination summarily to reject all that is contrary to truth and love”

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-196 Section-3)
Religious insight possesses the power of turning defeat into higher desires and new determinations. Love is the highest motivation which man may utilize in his universe ascent. But love, divested of truth, beauty, and goodness, is only a sentiment, a philosophic distortion, a psychic illusion, a spiritual deception.

A young man and a priest are playing together. At a short par-3 the priest asks, "What are you going to use on this hole, my son?"
The young man says, "An 8-iron, father. How about you?"
The priest says, "I'm going to hit a soft seven and pray."
The young man hits his 8-iron and puts the ball on the green.
The priest tops his 7-iron and dribbles the ball out a few yards.
The young man says, "I don't know about you, father, but in my church when we pray, we keep our head down."

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #25)
There was something formless and perfect
before the universe was born.
It is serene. Empty.
Solitary. Unchanging.
Infinite. Eternally present.
It is the mother of the universe.
For lack of a better name,
I call it the Tao.

It flows through all things,
inside and outside, and returns
to the origin of all things.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-117 Section-4 )
If mortal man proceeds upon the Paradise adventure, he is following the motions of time, which flow as currents within the stream of eternity; if mortal man rejects the eternal career, he is moving counter to the stream of events in the finite universes.

(From: Frank Herbert (1920 - 1986), Dune (First Law of Mentat)
A process cannot be understood by stopping it. Understanding must move with the flow of the process, must join it and flow with it.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-130 Section-7)
Time is the stream of flowing temporal events perceived by creature consciousness. Time is a name given to the succession-arrangement whereby events are recognized and segregated.

(From: John Muir (1838 - 1914)
We all flow from one fountain Soul. All are expressions of one Love. God does not appear, and flow out, only from narrow chinks and round bored wells here and there in favored races and places, but He flows in grand undivided currents, shoreless and boundless over creeds and forms and all kinds of civilizations and peoples and beasts, saturating all and fountainizing all.

(From: The Book of Runes - #24 – Wholeness / Life Forces / The Sun's Energy)
Practice the art of “Doing without doing.” Aim yourself truly and then maintain your aim without manipulative effort, for by our own power we do nothing. Even in loving, it is Love that loves through us. This way of thinking and being integrates new energies and permits you to flow into Wholeness, which is the ultimate goal of the Spiritual Warrior.

(From: Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815 - 1902), 1890)
The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls.

(From: The Book of Runes - #1 – The Self )
Being in the world but not of it, that is implicit here. And yet do not be closed, narrow, or judging, but remain receptive to impulses flowing from the Divine within and without. Strive to live the ordinary life in a non-ordinary way. Remember at all times what is coming to be and passing away, and focus on that which abides. Nothing less is called for from you now.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-162 Section-6)
“If any man thirst, let him come to me and drink. From the Father above I bring to this world the water of life. He who believes me shall be filled with the spirit which this water represents, for even the Scriptures have said, 'Out of him shall flow rivers of living waters.' When the Son of Man has finished his work on earth, there shall be poured out upon all flesh the living Spirit of Truth. Those who receive this spirit shall never know spiritual thirst.”

(From:
Thomas Calyle)

The work an unknown good man has done is like a vein of water flowing hidden underground, secretly making the ground green.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-146 Section-20)
By opening the human end of the channel of the God-man communication, mortals make immediately available the ever-flowing stream of divine ministry to the creatures of the worlds. When man hears God's spirit speak within the human heart, inherent in such an experience is the fact that God simultaneously hears that man's prayer

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-194 Section-3)
Prayer does not move the divine heart to liberality of bestowal, but it does so often dig out larger and deeper channels wherein the divine bestowals may flow to the hearts and souls of those who thus remember to maintain unbroken communion with their Maker through sincere prayer and true worship.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #66)
All streams flow to the sea because it is lower than they are.
Humility gives it its power.

(From: William James (1842 - 1910)
The stream of thought flows on; but most of its segments fall into the bottomless abyss of oblivion. Of some, no memory survives the instant of their passage. Of others, it is confined to a few moments, hours or days. Others, again, leave vestiges which are indestructible, and by means of which they may be recalled as long as life endures.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-20 Section-4)
God is inherently kind, naturally compassionate, and everlastingly merciful. And never is it necessary that any influence be brought to bear upon the Father to call forth his loving-kindness. The creature's need is wholly sufficient to insure the full flow of the Father's tender mercies and his saving grace. Since God knows all about his children, it is easy for him to forgive. The better man understands his neighbor, the easier it will be to forgive him, even to love him.

The Sermon
***********
Life is like swimming in the flowing river. When you try to swim back upstream to where you were previously, not only do you make no progress, but you exhaust yourself trying to go counter to the flow. Still the river carries you in it's flow, but adventures and opportunities and beauty are passed by and missed since you are struggling to go the wrong way and see them only after they have already passed. Turning around and going With the flow, you can see what is coming… swim from side to side… to avoid obstructions or to step out onto the shore for rest or reflection or exploration.

The River is God's Will. Do you go With the Flow or do you struggle against it?

There is a feeling you get when, far beyond your normal expectations, you accomplish something significantly superior to what you thought you could do… You ever felt that feeling? Most of us have to a degree at one time or another… some feel it rather more often than just once in a great while… more than a few experience it somewhat frequently.

To witness someone perform in such a way is an Inspiring thing. The look on their face is often a mixture of Joy and Disbelief. You can't help but to think, “Wow… That was Inspired!!” We may notice it more often in the work of various types of Artists, Performers or Athletes (each artists in their own right) because we see them through media coverage, but people in all walks of life are equivalently Inspired every day.

Wouldn't it be great if we could each be Inspired in the things that we do All the time? Some would say that that is impossible… is it? Or do you think that it Might be possible under the right circumstances? At the very least, we could each be a little more Inspired than we are at present… right? Is there a way to facilitate that Inspired state in our lives? Perhaps Prayer might help… Certainly Awareness and Dedication would aid Inspiration! Don't you think? They are worth a try, right?

Anything else you can think of that would help to get you Inspired more often?
If so, try That too!
When You are Inspired, you Inspire Others as well…

(From:
H. L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)

Theology is the effort to explain the unknowable in terms of the not worth knowing.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-103 Section-9)
When theology masters religion, religion dies; it becomes a doctrine instead of a life. The mission of theology is merely to facilitate the self-consciousness of personal spiritual experience. Theology constitutes the religious effort to define, clarify, expound, and justify the experiential claims of religion, which, in the last analysis, can be validated only by living faith. In the higher philosophy of the universe, wisdom, like reason, becomes allied to faith. Reason, wisdom, and faith are man's highest human attainments. Reason introduces man to the world of facts, to things; wisdom introduces him to a world of truth, to relationships; faith initiates him into a world of divinity, spiritual experience.

(From: The RSV Bible - Peter II 1:5-7)
For this very reason make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #63)
Act without doing;
work without effort.
Think of the small as large
and the few as many.
Confront the difficult
while it is still easy;
accomplish the great task
by a series of small acts.

(From:
Og Mandino (1923 - 1996)

Realize that true happiness lies within you. Waste no time and effort searching for peace and contentment and joy in the world outside. Remember that there is no happiness in having or in getting, but only in giving. Reach out. Share. Smile. Hug.

(From: Dr. Thomas Dooley)
Dedicate some of your life to others. Your dedication will not be a sacrifice. It will be an exhilarating experience because it is an intense effort applied toward a meaningful end.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-12 Section-7)
Brotherhood constitutes a fact of relationship between every personality in universal existence. No person can escape the benefits or the penalties that may come as a result of relationship to other persons. The part profits or suffers in measure with the whole. The good effort of each man benefits all men; the error or evil of each man augments the tribulation of all men. As moves the part, so moves the whole. As the progress of the whole, so the progress of the part.

(From: Peter McWilliams)
In reality, serendipity accounts for one percent of the blessings we receive in life, work and love. The other 99 percent is due to our efforts.

(From: Sharon Salzberg)
By prizing heartfulness above faultlessness, we may reap more from our effort because we're more likely to be changed by it.

(From: Mohandas K. Gandhi)
It is for us to make the effort. The result is always in God's hands.

(From: Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 - 1945)
Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort.

(From: George Eliot (1819 - 1880)
Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music.

(From: Zig Ziglar)
Regardless of what you are doing, if you pump long enough, hard enough and enthusiastically enough, sooner or later the effort will bring forth the reward.

(From: Elbert Hubbard (1856 - 1915)
How many a man has thrown up his hands at a time when a little more effort, a little more patience would have achieved success?

(From: Calvin Coolidge (1872 - 1933)
All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work.

(From: R. A. Salvatore, Sojourn)
It is better, I think, to grab at the stars than to sit flustered because you know you cannot reach them... At least he who reaches will get a good stretch, a good view, and perhaps even a low-hanging apple for his efforts.

(From: Daisaku Ikeda)
You must not for one instant give up the effort to build new lives for yourselves. Creativity means to push open the heavy, groaning doorway to life. This is not an easy struggle. Indeed, it may be the most difficult task in the world, for opening the door to your own life is, in the end, more difficult than opening the doors to the mysteries of the universe.

(From: Fritjof Capra, physicist)
The essence of living is discovering. Indeed, it is the joy of discovering that makes life worth the effort.

(From: Claude M Bristol)
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of intelligent effort.

(From: Charles H. Spurgeon)
The repetition of small efforts will accomplish more than the occasional use of great talents.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-160 Section-3)
The effort toward maturity necessitates work, and work requires energy. Whence the power to accomplish all this? The physical things can be taken for granted, but the Master has well said, “Man cannot live by bread alone.” Granted the possession of a normal body and reasonably good health, we must next look for those lures which will act as a stimulus to call forth man's slumbering spiritual forces. Jesus has taught us that God lives in man; then how can we induce man to release these soul-bound powers of divinity and infinity? How shall we induce men to let go of God that he may spring forth to the refreshment of our own souls while in transit outward and then to serve the purpose of enlightening, uplifting, and blessing countless other souls? How best can I awaken these latent powers for good which lie dormant in your souls? One thing I am sure of: Emotional excitement is not the ideal spiritual stimulus. Excitement does not augment energy; it rather exhausts the powers of both mind and body. Whence then comes the energy to do these great things? Look to your Master. Even now he is out in the hills taking in power while we are here giving out energy. The secret of all this problem is wrapped up in spiritual communion, in worship. From the human standpoint it is a question of combined meditation and relaxation. Meditation makes the contact of mind with spirit; relaxation determines the capacity for spiritual receptivity. And this interchange of strength for weakness, courage for fear, the will of God for the mind of self, constitutes worship.

The Sermon
***********
The greater the personal Effort, the greater the personal reward…do you not agree? Without Effort, rewards tend to lose their significance after a very short time. Winning without Effort gives no lasting satisfaction… it feels hollow, empty. But Effort does not always produce a win, and often your best Efforts go unnoticed or unacknowledged by others.

Don't you Love it when your genuine Efforts are rewarded, are celebrated, are appreciated? Of course, Everyone does. Is your best Effort at anything of any less value because it seems to go unrecognized or un-rewarded? You feel good about yourself when you give anything your best Effort, don't you? Is that not enough reward? Shouldn't it be? In theory yes… in practice, perhaps it does not feel like quite enough.

But forget not… God Always recognizes our best Efforts, and God Always Rewards our best Efforts… though often we must wait for it… sometimes even until after this present life. Did Jesus not tell us often enough that our greatest reward is in Heaven?

In regards to personal inner satisfaction, Effort can be it's own reward…
