The universe may not always play fair, but at least it's got a hell of a sense of humor.

Not only does God play dice with the Universe - he sometimes casts them where they can't be seen.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-123 Section-4)
The play life of Jewish children in the times of Jesus was rather circumscribed; all too often the children played at the more serious things they observed their elders doing. They played much at weddings and funerals, ceremonies which they so frequently saw and which were so spectacular. They danced and sang but had few organized games, such as children of later days so much enjoy.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #68 )
The best athlete
wants his opponent at his best.
The best general
enters the mind of his enemy.
The best businessman
serves the communal good.
The best leader
follows the will of the people.

All of them embody
the virtue of non-competition.
Not that they don't love to compete,
but they do it in the spirit of play.
In this they are like children
and in harmony with the Tao.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-140 Section-5)
Children can easily be taught to function as peacemakers. They enjoy team activities; they like to play together.

(From: Margaret Lowenfeld )
Play is an essential function of the passage from immaturity to emotional maturity. Any individual without the opportunities for adequate play in early life will go on seeking them in the stuff of adult life.

(From: Plato (427 BC - 347 BC)
You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.

(From: Kahlil Gibran (1883 - 1931 )
And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.

(From: Henry Van Dyke )
Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love, and to work, and to play and to look up at the stars.

(From: Louis Armstrong (1900 - 1971 )
What we play is life.

(From: Robert Altman (1925 - 2007 )
To play it safe is not to play.

The Sermon

Let's make this simple...

We must work but also we must Play.
Don't forget the Play... it doesn't work.
We Play that we may enjoy life.
Let us Play...

Quite often it is considered a matter of questioning.
Today though, it's more about a Feeling...

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #873, is Wonder…

Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-1)
The soil essential for religious growth presupposes a progressive life of self-realization, the co-ordination of natural propensities, the exercise of curiosity and the enjoyment of reasonable adventure, the experiencing of feelings of satisfaction, the functioning of the fear stimulus of attention and awareness, the wonder-lure, and a normal consciousness of smallness, humility.

(From: Dorothea Brande )
The author of genius does keep till his last breath the spontaneity, the ready sensitiveness, of a child, the "innocence of eye" that means so much to the painter, the ability to respond freshly and quickly to new scenes, and to old scenes as though they were new; to see traits and characteristics as though each were new-minted from the hand of God instead of sorting them quickly into dusty categories and pigeon-holing them without wonder or surprise;

(From: Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955 )
My sense of God is my sense of wonder about the Universe.

(From: The ASB Bible - Habakkuk 1:5)
"Look among the nations! Observe! Be astonished! Wonder! Because I am doing something in your days -- You would not believe if you were told.

(From: Gerry Spence, 'How to Argue and Win Every Time')
I would rather have a mind opened by wonder than one closed by belief.

(From: Herbert W. Boyer )
Wonder is what sets us apart from other life forms. No other species wonders about the meaning of existence or the complexity of the universe or themselves.

(From: C. S. Lewis (1898 - 1963), Mere Christianity )
If we discover a desire within us that nothing in this world can satisfy, also we should begin to wonder if perhaps we were created for another world.

(From: William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616), A Midsummer Night's Dream)
But wonder on, till truth makes all things plain.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-171 Section-7)
Jesus spread good cheer everywhere he went. He was full of grace and truth. His associates never ceased to wonder at the gracious words that proceeded out of his mouth. You can cultivate gracefulness, but graciousness is the aroma of friendliness which emanates from a love-saturated soul.

(From: St. Augustine )
Men go abroad to wonder the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars; and they pass by themselves without wondering.

(From: Herman Melville (1819 - 1891 )
From without, no wonderful effect is wrought within ourselves, unless some interior, responding wonder meets it.

(From: Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955 )
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #16 )
If you don't realize the source,
you stumble in confusion and sorrow.
When you realize where you come from,
you naturally become tolerant,
disinterested, amused,
kindhearted as a grandmother,
dignified as a king.
Immersed in the wonder of the Tao,
you can deal with whatever life brings you,
and when death comes, you are ready.

(From: Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955 )
Each of us visits this Earth involuntarily, and without an invitation. For me, it is enough to wonder at the secrets.

(From: Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809 - 1892) , Ulysses )
For I dipped into the future, as far as human eye could see, saw a vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
What is it that gives you a sense of Wonder?
What is Exciting and Wondrous to you?
Do you find that there are more and more Wonder-Full things as you get older?
or...
Does age seem to diminish the number of things that Inspire you with Wonder?

To the little child, nearly Everything is filled with Wonder.
Wonder is the Default Attitude for the little child.
Everything is unfamiliar, everything is New.
The more they discover, the more Wondrous it all seems.

It is this Wonder attitude of the little child and their willingness to Trust that I believe Jesus was talking about when he said, “Unless you become as a little child, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” I wonder if it is that you can't, or perhaps rather that you won't? Could it be that Wonder is the Lure that entices us to Seek the Kingdom?

I Wonder... Don't You?

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
Your Love fills me with Wonder... I never have to Wonder if it is there.

You ALL are Within the Infinitely Loving Embrace of our Universal Parent,

The Creator's Infinite Love to all of You,

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-1 Section-5)
Even though material mortals cannot see the person of God, they should rejoice in the assurance that he is a person; by faith accept the truth which portrays that the Universal Father so loved the world as to provide for the eternal spiritual progression of its lowly inhabitants; that he “delights in his children.” God is lacking in none of those superhuman and divine attributes which constitute a perfect, eternal, loving, and infinite Creator personality.

(From: The ASB Bible - Psalm 32:11)
Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous ones; And shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart.

(From: Epictetus (55 AD - 135 AD )
A wise man is he who does not grieve for the thing which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.

(From: Tom Wilson, from comic strip "Ziggy" )
You can complain because roses have thorns, or you can rejoice because thorns have roses.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-143 Section-2)
In the old order you fasted and prayed; as the new creature of the rebirth of the spirit, you are taught to believe and rejoice. In the Father's kingdom you are to become new creatures; old things are to pass away; behold I show you how all things are to become new. And by your love for one another you are to convince the world that you have passed from bondage to liberty, from death into life everlasting.

(From: Thomas a Kempis (1380 - 1471 )
Love flies, runs, and rejoices; it is free and nothing can hold it back.

(From: The ASB Bible - Corinthians I 13:4-7)
Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(From: George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950 )
This is the true joy in life, being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one. Being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as I live it is my privilege - my *privilege* to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I love. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle to me; it is a sort of splendid torch which I've got a hold of for the moment and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.

(From: The ASB Bible - Philippians 4:4-5)
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!
Let your gentle spirit be known to all men.

(From: Martin Luther (1483 - 1546 )
It is pleasing to God whenever you rejoice or laugh from the bottom of your heart.

(From: The RSV Bible - Psalm 118:24)
This is the day which the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-142 Section-2)
Then Jesus went on to say: “When your children are very young and immature, and when you must chastise them, they may reflect that their father is angry and filled with resentful wrath. Their immaturity cannot penetrate beyond the punishment to discern the father's farseeing and corrective affection. But when these same children become grown-up men and women, would it not be folly for them to cling to these earlier and misconceived notions regarding their father? As men and women they should now discern their father's love in all these early disciplines. And should not mankind, as the centuries pass, come the better to understand the true nature and loving character of the Father in heaven? What profit have you from successive generations of spiritual illumination if you persist in viewing God as Moses and the prophets saw him? I say to you, Jacob, under the bright light of this hour you should see the Father as none of those who have gone before ever beheld him. And thus seeing him, you should rejoice to enter the kingdom wherein such a merciful Father rules, and you should seek to have his will of love dominate your life henceforth.”

(From: Walter Scott )
If you have no friends to share or rejoice in your success in life - if you cannot look back to those whom you owe gratitude, or forward to those to whom you ought to afford protection, still it is no less incumbent on you to move steadily in the path of duty; for your active excretions are due not only to society; but in humble gratitude to the Being who made you a member of it, with powers to save yourself and others.

(From: Old Native American saying )
When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice.

I am staying with Very Dear Friends this weekend in South Western Washington near Portland OR. I am helping them learn how to make Fruit Wine like my dearly departed friend Rick Giles did for me some 20 years ago.

Along with a bit of fruit and a few other necessary ingredients, we are literally “turning Water into Wine.” It's a Miracle!!!! Granted it is not one of the instantaneous kind made so famous by JC 2000 years ago, but nevertheless...

It is truly a Joy to share this experience with them!

Today, let us just let the quotes speak for themselves

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-34 Section-6)
It is the presence of the divine Spirit, the water of life, that prevents the consuming thirst of mortal discontent and that indescribable hunger of the unspiritualized human mind. Spirit-motivated beings “never thirst, for this spiritual water shall be in them a well of satisfaction springing up into life everlasting.” Such divinely watered souls are all but independent of material environment as regards the joys of living and the satisfactions of earthly existence. They are spiritually illuminated and refreshed, morally strengthened and endowed.

(From: Alexandra Stoddard, Gracious Living in a New World )
The world is extremely interesting to a joyful soul.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-111 Section-4)
Happiness and joy take origin in the inner life. You cannot experience real joy all by yourself. A solitary life is fatal to happiness.

(From: Mark Twain (1835 - 1910 )
Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of a joy you must have somebody to divide it with.

(From: Sir Hugh Walpole )
The most wonderful of all things in life, I believe, is the discovery of another human being with whom one's relationship has a glowing depth, beauty, and joy as the years increase. This inner progressiveness of love between two human beings is a most marvelous thing, it cannot be found by looking for it or by passionately wishing for it. It is a sort of Divine accident.

(From: Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719 )
Friendship improves happiness, and abates misery, by doubling our joys, and dividing our grief.

(From: Richard Bach, Illusions [1977 )
The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life.

(From: Sister Mary Rose McGeady )
There is no greater joy nor greater reward than to make a fundamental difference in someone's life.

(From: The ASB Bible - John 15:1112)
"These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-34 Section-6)
“The kingdom of God is not meat and drink but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.”

(From: Ecclesiastes )
Give not over thy soul to sorrow; and afflict not thyself in thy own counsel. Gladness of heart is the life of man and the joyfulness of man is length of days.

(From: Louise Bogan )
I cannot believe that the inscrutable universe turns on an axis of suffering; surely the strange beauty of the world must somewhere rest on pure joy!

(From: Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965 )
Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-32 Section-3)
When the heights of perfection and eternity are attained, all the more honor to those who began at the bottom and joyfully climbed the ladder of life, round by round, and who, when they do reach the heights of glory, will have gained a personal experience which embodies an actual knowledge of every phase of life from the bottom to the top.

(From: George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950 )
This is the true joy in life -- being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one...

(From: Sir Wilfred Grenfell (1865 - 1940 )
Real joy comes not from ease or riches or from the praise of men, but from doing something worthwhile.

(From:
Pearl Buck (1892 - 1973), The Joy of Children, 1964 )
The secret of joy in work is contained in one word - excellence. To know how to do something well is to enjoy it.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-48 Section-7)
Effort does not always produce joy, but there is no happiness without intelligent effort.

(From: Maryanne Radmacher-Hershey, 1995 )
May your walls know joy; May every room hold laughter and every window open to great possibility.

(From: Fritjof Capra, physicist )
During periods of relaxation after concentrated intellectual activity, the intuitive mind seems to take over and can produce the sudden clarifying insights which give so much joy and delight.

(From: The ASB Bible - Romans 15:13)
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

(From: Mother Teresa (1910 - 1997 )
Joy is prayer - Joy is strength - Joy is love - Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls.

(From: Sarah Ban Breathnach )
Learning to live in the present moment is part of the path of joy.

(From: Oprah Winfrey (1954 - )
I define joy as a sustained sense of well-being and internal peace - a connection to what matters.

(From: Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955 )
The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me with the joy of living are goodness, beauty, and truth.

(From: Saint Francis of Assisi (1181 - 1226 )
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace!
Where there is hatred let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

(From: Alfred A. Montapert )
Happy is the person who not only sings, but feels God's eye is on the sparrow, and knows He watches over me. To be simply ensconced in God is true joy.

(From: The ASB Bible - Psalm 16:11)
You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

(From: Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC), The Confucian Analects )
With coarse rice to eat, with water to drink, and my bended arm for a pillow - I have still joy in the midst of these things.
