(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-34 Section-7)
Having started out on the way of life everlasting, having accepted the assignment and received your orders to advance, do not fear the dangers of human forgetfulness and mortal inconstancy, do not be troubled with doubts of failure or by perplexing confusion, do not falter and question your status and standing, for in every dark hour, at every crossroad in the forward struggle, the Spirit of Truth will always speak, saying, “This is the way.”

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #64 )
Prevent trouble before it arises. Put things in order before they exist. The giant pine tree grows from a tiny sprout. The journey of a thousand miles starts from beneath your feet.

(From: The ASB Bible - Matthew 6:34)
"So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

(From: Ann Landers (1918 - 2002)
Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life, and when it comes, hold your head high, look it squarely in the eye and say, 'I will be bigger than you. You cannot defeat me.'

(From: Thomas Paine (1737 - 1809 )
I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-149 Section-4)
“Let your hearts be so dominated by love that your spirit guide will have little trouble in delivering you from the tendency to give vent to those outbursts of animal anger which are inconsistent with the status of divine sonship.”

(From: Angela L. Wozniak )
I have come to realize that all my trouble with living has come from fear and smallness within me.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #52 )
If you close your mind in judgments and traffic with desires, your heart will be troubled. If you keep your mind from judging and aren't led by the senses, your heart will find peace.

(From: The RSV Bible - John 14:27)
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-149 Section-5)
All too many of man's troubles take origin in the fear soil of his own natural heart.

(From: Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790 )
Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-111 Section-6)
Many of the temporal troubles of mortal man grow out of his twofold relation to the cosmos. Man is a part of nature — he exists in nature — and yet he is able to transcend nature. Man is finite, but he is indwelt by a spark of infinity.

(From: Carl Jung (1875 - 1961 )
Nobody, as long as he moves about among the chaotic currents of life, is without trouble.

(From: Calvin Coolidge (1872 - 1933 )
Never go out to meet trouble. If you will just sit still, nine cases out of ten someone will intercept it before it reaches you.

(From: Dinah Shore (1917 - 1994 )
Trouble is part of your life, and if you don't share it, you don't give the person who loves you a chance to love you enough.

(From: Edgar Watson Howe (1853 - 1937 )
When a friend is in trouble, don't annoy him by asking if there is any thing you can do. Think up something appropriate and do it.

(From: Elizabeth Aston, The True Darcy Spirit, 2006)
Concern for someone else was a good remedy for taking the mind off one's own troubles.

(From: Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926 )
Do not believe that he who seeks to comfort you lives untroubled among the simple and quiet words that sometimes do you good. His life has much difficulty... Were it otherwise he would never have been able to find those words.

(From: Marcus Aurelius )
Nowhere can a man find a quieter or more untroubled retreat than in his own soul.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-130 Section-)8
“If you truly want to find God, that desire is in itself evidence that you have already found him. Your trouble is not that you cannot find God, for the Father has already found you; your trouble is simply that you do not know God.

(From: Titus Maccius Plautus (254 BC - 184 BC), Rudens )
Patience is the best remedy for every trouble.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-130 Section-6)
This day, my son, you are to be reborn, re-established as a man of faith, courage, and devoted service to man, for God's sake. And when you become so readjusted to life within yourself, you become likewise readjusted to the universe; you have been born again — born of the spirit — and henceforth will your whole life become one of victorious accomplishment. Trouble will invigorate you; disappointment will spur you on; difficulties will challenge you; and obstacles will stimulate you.

(From: John R. Miller)
If you will call your troubles experiences, and remember that every experience develops some latent force within you, you will grow vigorous and happy, however adverse your circumstances may seem to be.

The Sermon
***********
Trouble
It is amazing how much one can avoid by good planning... by paying attention... by choosing wisely. Many of life's ordinary Troubles can be avoided when maturity and wisdom are used... but as we all know quite well, Trouble can not be passed by completely.

Trouble avoids no one. Trouble finds all. The prepared and the unprepared... the good and the bad... the intelligent and the ignorant... the wise and the foolish. Trouble is such a universal experience, it's almost as if it has a vital purpose in life. Could it be that Trouble is not as much a curse as it appears... or as it feels like when you re in it? Perhaps, but I surmise that it is only the unavoidable Troubles that provide an opportunity for true personal value... and that value is wholly dependent upon how one handles and copes with and finds a solution to the Trouble. Seeking or ignoring it is a sure method of attracting unnecessary and painful Trouble.

When you have Troubles, invite God to help you to solve them. It is the one Certain way to find resolution, gain value, and attain wisdom from them.

Help me to avoid Trouble when it is possible and to learn from it when it is not.

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

(From: Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941 )
“Death is not extinguishing the light; it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.”

(From: Buddha (563 BC - 483 BC )
Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue.

(From: The Book of Runes -#14 - Opening / Fire/Torch )
the more light you have, the better you can see what is trivial and outmoded in your conditioning.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-176 Section-3)
Truth is living; the Spirit of Truth is ever leading the children of light into new realms of spiritual reality and divine service. You are not given truth to crystallize into settled, safe, and honored forms. Your revelation of truth must be so enhanced by passing through your personal experience that new beauty and actual spiritual gains will be disclosed to all who behold your spiritual fruits and in consequence thereof are led to glorify the Father who is in heaven.

(From: Colby Dorr Dam )
Each person has an ideal, a hope, a dream which represents the soul. We must give to it the warmth of love, the light of understanding and the essence of encouragement.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-191 Section-5)
“Let faith reveal your light to the world; let the revelation of truth open the eyes blinded by tradition; let your loving service effectually destroy the prejudice engendered by ignorance. By so drawing close to your fellow men in understanding sympathy and with unselfish devotion, you will lead them into a saving knowledge of the Father's love.”

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #52 )
Seeing into darkness is clarity.
Knowing how to yield is strength.
Use your own light
and return to the source of light.
This is called practicing eternity.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-101 Section-0)
There really is a true and genuine inner voice, that "true light which lights every man who comes into the world." And this spirit leading is distinct from the ethical prompting of human conscience. The feeling of religious assurance is more than an emotional feeling. The assurance of religion transcends the reason of the mind, even the logic of philosophy. Religion is faith, trust, and assurance.

(From: Plato (427 BC - 347 BC )
We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-191 Section-4)
“You are all the children of light; therefore stumble not into the misunderstanding entanglements of mortal suspicion and human intolerance. If you are ennobled, by the grace of faith, to love unbelievers, should you not also equally love those who are your fellow believers in the far-spreading household of faith? Remember, as you love one another, all men will know that you are my disciples.”

(From: Og Mandino (1923 - 1996 )
I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness for it shows me the stars.

(From: John Marsden, The Journey )
When there's a lot of light, you don't notice the dark. When there's a lot of dark you always notice the light.

(From: Sri Madhava )
Freedom, then, lies only in our innate human capacity to choose between different sorts of bondage, bondage to desire or self esteem, or bondage to the light that lightens all our lives.

(From: The ASB Bible - Matthew 5:14-16)
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; "nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

(From: Saint Francis of Assisi (1181 - 1226)
All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.

Never find your delight in another's misfortune.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-180 Section-1)
“You well know the commandment which directs that you love one another; that you love your neighbor even as yourself. But I am not wholly satisfied with even that sincere devotion on the part of my children. I would have you perform still greater acts of love in the kingdom of the believing brotherhood. And so I give you this new commandment: That you love one another even as I have loved you. And by this will all men know that you are my disciples if you thus love one another.

“When I give you this new commandment, I do not place any new burden upon your souls; rather do I bring you new joy and make it possible for you to experience new pleasure in knowing the delights of the bestowal of your heart's affection upon your fellow men.”

(From: Alexander Smith (1830 - 1867 )
Love is but the discovery of ourselves in others, and the delight in the recognition.

(From: e e cummings (1894 - 1962 )
Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.

(From: George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950 )
Life is not meant to be easy, my child; but take courage -- it can be delightful.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-132 Section-3)
Revealed truth, personally discovered truth, is the supreme delight of the human soul; it is the joint creation of the material mind and the indwelling spirit. The eternal salvation of this truth-discerning and beauty-loving soul is assured by that hunger and thirst for goodness which leads this mortal to develop a singleness of purpose to do the Father's will, to find God and to become like him. There is never conflict between true knowledge and truth. There may be conflict between knowledge and human beliefs, beliefs colored with prejudice, distorted by fear, and dominated by the dread of facing new facts of material discovery or spiritual progress.

(From: Carl Sagan (1934 - 1996 )
Personally, I would be delighted if there were a life after death, especially if it permitted me to continue to learn about this world and others, if it gave me a chance to discover how history turns out.

(From: Paul Claudel)
Intelligence is nothing without delight.

(From: The RSV Bible - Psalm 37:4+)
Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

(From: Rose Kennedy (1890 - 1995 )
Birds sing after a storm; why shouldn't people feel as free to delight in whatever sunlight remains to them?

(From: W. Somerset Maugham (1874 - 1965), The Razor's Edge )
Nothing in the world is permanent, and we're foolish when we ask anything to last, but surely we're still more foolish not to take delight in it while we have it.

(From: Desiderius Erasmus (1466 - 1536)
The pleasures which we most rarely experience give us the greatest delight.

(From: Fritjof Capra, physicist )
During periods of relaxation after concentrated intellectual activity, the intuitive mind seems to take over and can produce the sudden clarifying insights which give so much joy and delight.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-150 Section-5)
You are not to be saved because you live a righteous life; rather is it that you live a righteous life because you have already been saved, have recognized sonship as the gift of God and service in the kingdom as the supreme delight of life on earth.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-102 Section-7)
The God-knowing individual is not one who is blind to the difficulties or unmindful of the obstacles which stand in the way of finding God in the maze of superstition, tradition, and materialistic tendencies of modern times. He has encountered all these deterrents and triumphed over them, surmounted them by living faith, and attained the highlands of spiritual experience in spite of them.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-130 Section-6)
And when you become so readjusted to life within yourself, you become likewise readjusted to the universe; you have been born again--born of the spirit--and henceforth will your whole life become one of victorious accomplishment. Trouble will invigorate you; disappointment will spur you on; difficulties will challenge you; and obstacles will stimulate you.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - # 63)
Act without doing;
work without effort.
Think of the small as large
and the few as many.
Confront the difficult
while it is still easy;
accomplish the great task
by a series of small acts.

The Master never reaches for the great;
thus she achieves greatness.
When she runs into a difficulty,
she stops and gives herself to it.
She doesn't cling to her own comfort;
thus problems are no problem for her.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-48 Section-7)
Difficulties may challenge mediocrity and defeat the fearful, but they only stimulate the true children of the Most Highs.

(From: William Ellery Channing (1780 - 1842 )
Difficulties are meant to rouse, not discourage. The human spirit is to grow strong by conflict.

(From: Seneca (5 BC - 65 AD )
Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body.

(From: Saint Francis de Sales (1567 - 1622 )
When you encounter difficulties and contradictions, do not try to break them, but bend them with gentleness and time.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-91 Section-6)
Do not be so slothful as to ask God to solve your difficulties, but never hesitate to ask him for wisdom and spiritual strength to guide and sustain you while you yourself resolutely and courageously attack the problems at hand.

(From: Dr. Thomas Fuller (1654 - 1734 )
All things are difficult before they are easy.

(From: The Book of Runes -#21 - Gateway / Place Of Non-Action )
If you are undergoing difficulties, remember: the quality of your passage depends upon your attitude and upon the clarity of your intention.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-154 Section-2)
Universe difficulties must be met and planetary obstacles must be encountered as a part of the experience training provided for the growth and development, the progressive perfection, of the evolving souls of mortal creatures. The spiritualization of the human soul requires intimate experience with the educational solving of a wide range of real universe problems. The animal nature and the lower forms of will creatures do not progress favorably in environmental ease. Problematic situations, coupled with exertion stimuli, conspire to produce those activities of mind, soul, and spirit which contribute mightily to the achievement of worthy goals of mortal progression and to the attainment of higher levels of spirit destiny.

(From: Epictetus (55 AD - 135 AD )
Difficulties show men what they are. In case of any difficulty remember that God has pitted you against a rough antagonist that you may be a conqueror, and this cannot be without toil.

(From: Kathleen Norris )
Before you begin a thing, remind yourself that difficulties and delays quite impossible to foresee are ahead. If you could see them clearly, naturally you could do a great deal to get rid of them but you can't. You can only see one thing clearly and that is your goal. Form a mental vision of that and cling to it through thick and thin.

(From: Eric Hoffer (1902 - 1983 )
At the core of every true talent there is an awareness of the difficulties inherent in any achievement, and the confidence that by persistence and patience something worthwhile will be realized. Thus talent is a species of vigor.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-160 Section-1)
The first step in the solution of any problem is to locate the difficulty, to isolate the problem, and frankly to recognize its nature and gravity. The great mistake is that, when life problems excite our profound fears, we refuse to recognize them. Likewise, when the acknowledgment of our difficulties entails the reduction of our long-cherished conceit, the admission of envy, or the abandonment of deep-seated prejudices, the average person prefers to cling to the old illusions of safety and to the long-cherished false feelings of security. Only a brave person is willing honestly to admit, and fearlessly to face, what a sincere and logical mind discovers.

(From: Titus Livius (59 BC - 17 AD )
Many difficulties which nature throws in our way, may be smoothed away by the exercise of intelligence.

(From: Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784 )
Life affords no higher pleasure than that of summoning difficulties, passing from one step of success to another, forming new wishes and seeing them gratified.

(From: Phyllis Battone )
There are two ways of meeting difficulties. You alter the difficulties or you alter yourself to meet them.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-196 Section-3)
Personal, spiritual religious experience is an efficient solvent for most mortal difficulties; it is an effective sorter, evaluator, and adjuster of all human problems. Religion does not remove or destroy human troubles, but it does dissolve, absorb, illuminate, and transcend them. True religion unifies the personality for effective adjustment to all mortal requirements.

The Sermon

Difficulties

Many will find you on their own without any conscious effort on your part. Usually these types of Difficulties are not ones that we would knowingly choose for ourselves, but quite often they are vital to our personal growth. These are the Difficulties that will keep coming back to us over and over again when we neglect to or are unable to solve or overcome them.

There are also Difficulties that we cause ourselves unnecessarily... the result of refusing to learn from past mistakes or of making other unwise choices. For the most part, these are the avoidable Difficulties.

Then there are the Difficulties we knowingly and purposefully choose. They are the ones that are intrinsically a part of the process of pursuing our goals and our dreams. They can be daunting, demanding, challenging... they are not necessarily enjoyable and often less than amusing and yet, when conquered, they can be Most Rewarding! The conquest of these Difficulties brings us a step or even Many steps closer to the attainment of our cherished inner hopes and desires. Overcoming Difficulties of this sort will Often serve to teach us many of life's fundamental and essential lessons as a result of our own better choices rather than having them show up in our experience unannounced or without warning.

Which are the difficulties You most often face in your life?
Do they just happen to you or do you choose them wisdom and forethought?

*******************************************
