“A Tale of Woe”
(Author Unknown)

Three aspiring psychiatrists from three leading universities were attending their first class on
emotional extremes.

"Just to establish some parameters," said the professor to the student from UCLA, "what is the opposite of joy"?

"Sadness," said the student.

"And the opposite of depression"? he asked the young lady from Clemson.

"Elation," she said.

"And you, sir," he said to the student from Texas A&M. "How about the opposite of woe"?

The Aggie student replied, "Sir, I believe that would be giddy up!"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Hi Everyone! I got quite a few favorable comments on last week's Sunday Service topic, “The First Voice You Hear…” so I thought maybe if you all didn't mind, I'd do a follow up this week… [since I already did it, those who minded should stop reading now. ;-)]

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #554, is “The First voice you Listen to…

(From: Robert Frost (1874 - 1963)
Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-146 Section-2)
Jesus taught his followers that, when they had made their prayers to the Father, they should remain for a time in silent receptivity to afford the indwelling spirit the better opportunity to speak to the listening soul. The spirit of the Father speaks best to man when the human mind is in an attitude of true worship. We worship God by the aid of the Father's indwelling spirit and by the illumination of the human mind through the ministry of truth. Worship, taught Jesus, makes one increasingly like the being who is worshiped. Worship is a transforming experience whereby the finite gradually approaches and ultimately attains the presence of the Infinite.

(From: Nike advertisement)
The only one who can tell you "you can't" is you. And you don't have to listen.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
None of us will ever accomplish anything excellent or commanding except when he listens to this whisper which is heard by him alone.

(From: James Carroll, O Magazine, October 2002)
We spend most of our time and energy in a kind of horizontal thinking. We move along the surface of things…[but] there are times when we stop. We sit sill. We lose ourselves in a pile of leaves or its memory. We listen and breezes from a whole other world begin to whisper.

(From: Anthony J. D'Angelo, The College Blue Book)
Listen to your intuition. It will tell you everything you need to know.

(From: The Land Before Time)
Let your heart guide you. It whispers, so listen closely.

(From: Paul Tillich (1886 - 1965)
The first duty of love is to listen.

(From: Pastor Daniel Megow - Church Within Sunday Service #553)
the pattern…
1.] Self recognizes that there is a choice to be made between right and wrong…
2.] “the still small voice” (“God Prompting”) suggests the Right choice…
3.] Soul identifies why it is the “Right” choice…
4.] Ego argues and justifies all of the other choice options it can think of…
5.] The combined “Self” enacts the choice, sometimes ego wins out, sometimes Soul does…

(From: Plutarch (46 AD - 120 AD)
Know how to listen, and you will profit even from those who talk badly.

(From: Saint Benedict)
Listen and attend with the ear of your heart.

The Sermon
***********
Well… last week's Sunday Service topic was “The First Voice You Hear…” so… did anyone besides me have an experience during this past week that made them aware of that “First Voice” and the “pattern” of thinking that seems to follow it? [It was in the above quotes if you want to refer back to it. ;-)]

It Is Interesting to me how much better I feel about myself when I follow the suggestion of that “First Voice” though it's not always easy in the moment to remember that initial proposal of goodness. Ego's alternate justifications are Swift and Loud and Convincing… doing their utmost to help a person not remember the initial proposition.

So… that kind of got me to thinkin' a little bit more about how well I actually Listen to that First Voice that I hear.

Today's topic, “The First voice you Listen to…” came to me when I realized how Virtually Instantaneously the ego tries to take charge of any situation. It made me recognize that in fact the First voice I actually Listen to is ego's voice (how easily one gets caught up in the arguments ;-).

“Yeah but…”
“What if…”
“Not enough time…”
“You deserve…”
“I don't feel like it…”
[the list is varied and almost endless…]

No Wonder it is so difficult sometimes to make the Right decisions… the Right choices!

But you know what? I'll bet if you are Truly Honest with yourself, you'll discover that you make the Right Choice, the Good Choice, More often than you do the wrong one… the lesser one. Sure… it doesn't seem like it at times, because it is far easier to remember our failures than it is our successes… the ego makes sure of that! [I find that ego very often gets confused with “conscience” in these instances.]

Doing the Right Thing goes almost unnoticed. Why is that? Because our Souls don't make a big thing about it… the Soul takes it right in stride and moves on to the next thing. Soul may feel gratification and joy at doing the right thing, but it is not the one that says, “Look at Me! I did something Good!” or, “Hey You! Look what I did!” …those proclamations belong to “that Other part” of ourselves. Don't ya Think?

“The First voice you Listen to…”

Maybe it's Not the Loud and Persistent one… maybe it Is “the still small voice” that I really listened to First. I Want to be Good, I try to be… I Want to do the Right thing, I intend to… I Value Love… I Value Peace…

Maybe, just Maybe…

Humor of the Week

On the first day, God created the dog and said:

"Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years."

The dog said: "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?"

So God agreed.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said:

"Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span."

The monkey said: "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?"

And God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow and said:

"You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family . For this, I will give you a life span of sixty
Years."

The cow said: "That's kind of a tough life you wan t me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?"

And God agreed again.

On the fourth day, God created man and said:

"Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years."

But man said: "Only twenty years ? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?"

"Okay," said God, "You asked for it."

So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you...

(From: Jesus - The Urantia Papers - Paper-192 Section-2)
Have faith in God to the end of your days on earth. Never forget that, when you are a faith son of God, all upright work of the realm is sacred. Nothing which a son of God does can be common. Do your work, therefore, from this time on, as for God. And when you are through on this world, I have other and better worlds where you shall likewise work for me. And in all of this work, on this world and on other worlds, I will work with you, and my spirit shall dwell within you."

The Sermon
***********
A Friend of mine sent me an e-mail with the subject line, “Divine Image.” The message read, “Stare at this image - then put your head back & close your eyes. What do you see?” Under it was an empty gray box (I have my e-mail program set so that no pictures or attachments may be shown without my authorization… meaning that I have to right-click in the gray box and choose “show picture” in order to see it).

Well… I of course decided to see the picture, and when I did, I remembered that I had seen this one before some few years back. The actual picture looked like a large black spot with an irregular white shape in the middle with a number of irregular black shapes on the white shape… and when I had stared at it all for a while and put my head back and closed my eyes, I saw a pretty good image of Jesus.

I decided to try it again to refresh my memory…

“Stare at this image - then put your head back & close your eyes. What do you see?”

This time…
…I saw You, and I saw me, and I saw People that were happy, sad, loving, angry, hopeful, fearful, excited, depressed, free and oppressed.
…I saw everyone that I have ever: Loved, wanted to hate, cared about, was indifferent to, met, passed by, had Soul to Soul contact with and even with whom I have had ego to ego battle with.

And…
…I saw Jesus again… every time I saw you, or me, or any of the others, I also saw Jesus… I saw God's Child… I saw the Family Resemblance… I saw the Spirit that All have common Within them. In some, the Spirit was “Soul Free” to, Love and Express and Share without question or compromise. In others, the Spirit seemed to be Pleading for even that briefest moment of release from it's ego bound captivity. Most of course fell somewhere between those two.

Was I surprised to see Jesus image superimposed within the image of you and me and all the others? No… not anymore… but in days not so long gone by, it would have caused me many various levels of confusion.

Pick an Image… Pick any Image.

“Stare at this image - then put your head back & close your eyes. What do you see?”

Quotes

(From: Kevin Smith)
My Father taught me how to be a man – and not by instilling in me a sense of machismo or an agenda of dominance. He taught me that a real man doesn't take, he gives; he doesn't use force, he uses logic; doesn't play the role of trouble-maker, but rather, trouble-shooter; and most importantly, a real man is defined by what's in his heart, not his pants.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-174 Section-1)
"When a wise man understands the inner impulses of his fellows, he will love them. And when you love your brother, you have already forgiven him. This capacity to understand man's nature and forgive his apparent wrongdoing is Godlike. If you are wise parents, this is the way you will love and understand your children, even forgive them when transient misunderstanding has apparently separated you. The child, being immature and lacking in the fuller understanding of the depth of the child-father relationship, must frequently feel a sense of guilty separation from a father's full approval, but the true father is never conscious of any such separation.

(From: Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790)
I cannot conceive otherwise than that He, the Infinite Father, expects or requires no worship or praise from us, but that He is even infinitely above it.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-146 Section-3)
"While you cannot observe the divine spirit at work in your minds, there is a practical method of discovering the degree to which you have yielded the control of your soul powers to the teaching and guidance of this indwelling spirit of the heavenly Father, and that is the degree of your love for your fellow men. This spirit of the Father partakes of the love of the Father, and as it dominates man, it unfailingly leads in the directions of divine worship and loving regard for one's fellows.

(From: Austin L. Sorensen)
A child is not likely to find a father in God unless he finds something of God in his father.

(From: David B. Haight)
Love is this divine ingredient. It alone describes what can be our perfect relationship to our Heavenly Father and our family and neighbors, and the means by which we accomplish His work.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-117 Section-6)
All true love is from God, and man receives the divine affection as he himself bestows this love upon his fellows. Love is dynamic. It can never be captured; it is alive, free, thrilling, and always moving. Man can never take the love of the Father and imprison it within his heart. The Father's love can become real to mortal man only by passing through that man's personality as he in turn bestows this love upon his fellows.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-148 Section-6)
No more shall suffering mortals be denied the comfort of knowing the love of God and understanding the mercy of the Father in heaven. While the speech of God spoken from the whirlwind was a majestic concept for the day of its utterance, you have already learned that the Father does not thus reveal himself, but rather that he speaks within the human heart as a still, small voice, saying, `This is the way; walk therein.' Do you not comprehend that God dwells within you, that he has become what you are that he may make you what he is!"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Saturday morning while I was searching through the “piles” in the office for something, I discovered something else. I found our little bag of “Runes” that had been missing for many months. I sometimes enjoy drawing a single rune from the bag and letting it's message identify the topic for the Service. [If you are unfamiliar with “Runes” try a Google search on the word.] I remember thinking… “Hey… maybe I can use it for a topic for Sunday's Service!”

Well… that's just what I did. While in Stillness, I asked for God's guidance and felt through the bag of stones until one in particular seemed like it wanted to be the one (so to speak ;-). It turned out to be the stone with the symbol for “Raido” on it. I went to the book to see the “reading” for that particular stone and, “Oh my Gosh! What a great Topic!” Rather than just using the whole thing as a single quote though, I broke it into separate paragraphs and used quotes from other sources in front of, in between, and after them.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #557, is The Journey…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: Francois De La Rochefoucauld (1613 - 1680)

Hope is the last thing that dies in man; and though it be exceedingly deceitful, yet it is of this good use to us, that while we are traveling through life it conducts us in an easier and more pleasant way to our journey's end.

(From: The Book of Runes - #20 A Journey… (Raido) …first part of the quote)
This Rune is concerned with communication, with the attunement of something that has two sides, two elements, and with the ultimate reunion that comes at the end of the journey, when what is above and what is below are united and of one mind.

(From: Lao-tzu (604 BC - 531 BC), The Way of Lao-tzu)
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

(From: Marcus Terentius Varro (116 BC - 27 BC)
The longest part of the journey is said to be the passing of the gate.

(From: Dag Hammarskjold (1905 - 1961)
The longest journey is the journey inward.

(From: The Book of Runes - #20 A Journey… (Raido) …quote continued)
Inner worth mounts here, and at such a time you must remember that you are not intended to rely entirely upon your own power, but rather to ask what constitutes right action. Ask through prayer, through addressing your own knowing, the Witness Self, the Teacher Within. Not intent on movement, be content to wait; while you wait, keep on removing resistances. As the obstructions give way, all remorse arising from “trying to make it happen” disappears.

(From: Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965)
Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.

(From: The Book of Runes - #20 A Journey… (Raido) …quote continued)
The journey is toward self-healing, self-change and union. You are concerned here with nothing less than unobstructed, perfect union. But the Union of Heaven and Earth cannot be forced. Regulate any excesses in your life. Material advantages must not weigh heavily on this Journey of the self toward the Self.

(From: Stephen Covey)
We are not human beings on a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings on a human journey.

(From: Ursula K. LeGuin)

It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end.

(From: The Book of Runes - #20 A Journey… (Raido) …quote concluded)
Another of the Cycle Runes, Raido represents the Soul's journey and has within it the element of Joy, for the end is in sight. No longer burdened by what you've left behind. Heaven above you and the Earth below you unite within you and support you on your way. A simple prayer for the Soul's journey is: I will to will Your Will.

(From: The ASB Bible - Romans 12:2 )
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-118 Section-8)
A personality who knows God and desires to do his will, who has spirit insight, is divinely stable and eternally existent. Man's great universe adventure consists in the transit of his mortal mind from the stability of mechanical statics to the divinity of spiritual dynamics, and he achieves this transformation by the force and constancy of his own personality decisions, in each of life's situations declaring, "It is my will that your will be done."

(From: Marcel Proust (1871 - 1922)
We don't receive wisdom; we must discover it for ourselves after a journey that no one can take for us or spare us.

(From: Cynthia Ozick)
Nothing is so awesomely unfamiliar as the familiar that discloses itself at the end of a journey.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Life is Indeed a Journey and we each are upon it's Path.

No two Paths are the same and yet we Journey side by side.

No two Journeys are identical, and yet Journey's End is much the same.

Stumbling occurs when one foot is upon our own Path, and our other foot strays to try and walk the Path of another.

Each Path is composed of many different side trails, each seemingly a Journey unto itself… each seemingly with it's own unique and final goal… and it is these journeys within the Journey that we share with one another along the way.

We Journey together into Eternity seeking Truth and Beauty and Goodness… seeking reunion with our Maker… Love holding us together and drawing us Forward.

It is our Own will that keeps us Moving, and the Creator's Will that keeps us going in the right direction.

When one sincerely desires it within their own Soul, and can honestly say, "It is my will that Your will be done." then it is that their Own will is Truly freed to Soar.
