Welcome by: Pastor Daniel

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to The Church that is Within.

I was going to do another service about co-operation today, but when I sat down to begin, it didn't happen in the way I had thought it would. I was going to talk about co-operation with God as a part of daily life, but that's not what came out of my fingers on the keyboard... or Is it?

"To be, or not to be. That is the question. Can something be done about it? Of course. Of course."

(From: the Urantia Papers - Paper-12 Section-7)
It is a mystery that God is a highly personal self-conscious being with residential headquarters, and at the same time personally present in such a vast universe and personally in contact with such a well-nigh infinite number of beings. That such a phenomenon is a mystery beyond human comprehension should not in the least lessen your faith. Do not allow the magnitude of the infinity, the immensity of the eternity, and the grandeur and glory of the matchless character of God to overawe, stagger, or discourage you; for the Father is not very far from any one of you; he dwells within you, and in him do we all literally move, actually live, and veritably have our being.
Even though the Paradise Father functions through his divine creators and his creature children, he also enjoys the most intimate inner contact with you, so sublime, so highly personal, that it is even beyond my comprehension--that mysterious communion of the Father fragment with the human soul and with the mortal mind of its actual indwelling. Knowing what you do of these gifts of God, you therefore know that the Father is in intimate touch, not only with his divine associates, but also with his evolutionary mortal children of time. The Father indeed abides on Paradise, but his divine presence also dwells in the minds of men.
Even though the spirit of a Son be poured out upon all flesh, even though a Son once dwelt with you in the likeness of mortal flesh, even though the seraphim personally guard and guide you, how can any of these divine beings of the Second and Third Centers ever hope to come as near to you or to understand you as fully as the Father, who has given a part of himself to be in you, to be your real and divine, even your eternal, self?

(from: the RSV Bible - Romans 12:6-18)
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; never be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-103 Section-5)
This idea-ideal of doing good to others---the impulse to deny the ego something for the benefit of one's neighbor---is very circumscribed at first. Primitive man regards as neighbor only those very close to him, those who treat him neighborly; as religious civilization advances, one's neighbor expands in concept to embrace the clan, the tribe, the nation. And then Jesus enlarged the neighbor scope to embrace the whole of humanity, even that we should love our enemies. And there is something inside of every normal human being that tells him this teaching is moral---right. Even those who practice this ideal least, admit that it is right in theory.

(from: the RSV Bible - Matthew 12:50)
For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.

(From: the Urantia Papers - Paper-12 Section-7)
Brotherhood constitutes a fact of relationship between every personality in universal existence. No person can escape the benefits or the penalties that may come as a result of relationship to other persons. The part profits or suffers in measure with the whole. The good effort of each man benefits all men; the error or evil of each man augments the tribulation of all men. As moves the part, so moves the whole. As the progress of the whole, so the progress of the part. The relative velocities of part and whole determine whether the part is retarded by the inertia of the whole or is carried forward by the momentum of the cosmic brotherhood.

(from: the Tao Te Ching - #68)
The best athlete wants his opponent at his best.
The best general enters the mind of his enemy.
The best businessman serves the communal good.
The best leader follows the will of the people.

All of them embody the virtue of non-competition.
Not that they don't love to compete, but they do it in the spirit of play. In this they are like children and in harmony with the Tao.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-140 Section-10)
That evening while teaching in the house, for it had begun to rain, Jesus talked at great length, trying to show the twelve what they must be, not what they must do. They knew only a religion that imposed the doing of certain things as the means of attaining righteousness--salvation. But Jesus would reiterate, "In the kingdom you must be righteous in order to do the work." Many times did he repeat, "Be you therefore perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect." All the while was the Master explaining to his bewildered apostles that the salvation which he had come to bring to the world was to be had only by believing, by simple and sincere faith. Said Jesus: "John preached a baptism of repentance, sorrow for the old way of living. You are to proclaim the baptism of fellowship with God. Preach repentance to those who stand in need of such teaching, but to those already seeking sincere entrance to the kingdom, open the doors wide and bid them enter into the joyous fellowship of the sons of God." But it was a difficult task to persuade these Galilean fishermen that, in the kingdom, being righteous, by faith, must precede doing righteousness in the daily life of the mortals of earth.

The Sermon
***********
"Hey God?"

        Yes dear child?

"Well, this is a day I'd like to dedicate to you, and I just wanted to ask you what you would like me to Do?"

What would you Like to do?

"Well God, That's not the Point. I wanted to know specifically what YOU would like me to do today."

It IS the point, my child, and what is it that makes you think that what You would like to do isn't exactly what I would like you to do?

"'Cause then I wouldn't be doing YOUR will, I would be doing Mine. Don't you see what I mean?"

Actually, I see quite well. I have Perfect Vision you know.

"Oh, yeah."

And it is My will that you Be Loving, Be Truthful, Be Good in whatever it is that you choose to Do in this world I have given you to work and play and grow up in.

"Yeah, I know, but shouldn't I be doing something... ya know, like... specific?"

Was that not specific enough for you? Do you not yet know that life isn't about what I want you to do so much as it is about, what I want you to Be while you are doing what it is that You choose to do?

"Oh. You mean...?"

Do what is in your heart, in your Soul to do. Do things difficult, do things easy, do things exciting, do things just for fun. Just Be Loving, Be Truthful, Be Good while you are doing them. That is My will for you... don't YOU see?

"It's THAT easy?"

        It's that easy.

"Hmmm... then why does it always seem so difficult?"

You just need more and more practice dear one. It will become much easier when you grow up.

"Well... OK God. I'll do my Best."

I would ask you to do no more than your best. Your Best will grow as You grow.

"So then... Just do what is in my Heart to do?"

And while you are doing it, Be Loving, Be Truthful, Be Good. That is all.

"But isn't there EVER anything specifically You would like me to do?"

If ever there is anything in particular that I would like you to do, you won't know about it until the moment I want it done. In that moment will you be given the choice of participating in it or not. You will know exactly what it is, and When it is when you are Being Loving, Being Truthful, and Being Good. It will always involve Participating with, Cooperating with, or being in Service To, your sisters and brothers.

"Hey God?"

        Yes beloved?

"I'm glad we had this talk."

        Yes. I am Too child.

"And... Thanks!"

        You are Always Welcome.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to The Church that is Within.

For the most part, people seem to be attracted to the concept of cooperation/co-operation. Cooperation is the act of working together towards a common goal or ideal... a worthy and ennobling objective. Co-operation with the hyphen, to me represents more an aspiration toward Harmony... individual and unique expressions performed together in unity, rather than uniformity, in quest of greater value.

(from: the Tao Te Ching #67)
Some say that my teaching is nonsense. Others call it lofty but impractical. But to those who have looked inside themselves, this nonsense makes perfect sense. And to those who put it into practice, this loftiness has roots that go deep.

I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures. Simple in actions and in thoughts, you return to the source of being. Patient with both friends and enemies, you accord with the way things are. Compassionate toward yourself, you reconcile all beings in the world.

(from: the Urantia Papers - Paper-44 Section-1)
Harmony, the music of the seven levels of melodious association, is the one universal code of spirit communication.

(from: the Urantia Papers - Paper-133 Section-5)
Mathematics asserts that, if one person stands for a certain unit of intellectual and moral value, ten persons would stand for ten times this value. But in dealing with human personality it would be nearer the truth to say that such a personality association is a sum equal to the square of the number of personalities concerned in the equation rather than the simple arithmetical sum. A social group of human beings in co-ordinated working harmony stands for a force far greater than the simple sum of its parts.

(from: the RSV Bible - Romans 12:16-18)
Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; never be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.

(from: the Urantia Papers - Paper-2 Section-7)
The discernment of supreme beauty is the discovery and integration of reality: The discernment of the divine goodness in the eternal truth, that is ultimate beauty. Even the charm of human art consists in the harmony of its unity.

(from: the Urantia Papers - Paper-28 Section-6)
While the spirit techniques of mercy ministry are beyond your concept, you should even now understand that mercy is a quality of growth. You should realize that there is a great reward of personal satisfaction in being first just, next fair, then patient, then kind. And then, on that foundation, if you choose and have it in your heart, you can take the next step and really show mercy; but you cannot exhibit mercy in and of itself. These steps must be traversed; otherwise there can be no genuine mercy. There may be patronage, condescension, or charity--even pity--but not mercy. True mercy comes only as the beautiful climax to these preceding adjuncts to group understanding, mutual appreciation, fraternal fellowship, spiritual communion, and divine harmony.

(from: the Urantia Papers - Paper-111 Section-6)
Science is the source of facts, and mind cannot operate without facts. They are the building blocks in the construction of wisdom which are cemented together by life experience. Man can find the love of God without facts, and man can discover the laws of God without love, but man can never begin to appreciate the infinite symmetry, the supernal harmony, the exquisite repleteness of the all-inclusive nature of the First Source and Center until he has found divine law and divine love and has experientially unified these in his own evolving cosmic philosophy.

(from: the Urantia Papers - Paper-140 Section-8)
The Master came to create in man a new spirit, a new will--to impart a new capacity for knowing the truth, experiencing compassion, and choosing goodness-- the will to be in harmony with God's will, coupled with the eternal urge to become perfect, even as the Father in heaven is perfect.

(from: the RSV Bible - Colossians 3:12-14)
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, and patience, forbearing one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

(from: the Tao Te Ching #32)
If powerful men and women could remain centered in the Tao, all things would be in harmony. The world would become a paradise. All people would be at peace, and the law would be written in their hearts.

The Sermon
***********
I grew up in a family of singers. We sang together at church, at home, almost Always while driving in the car, and collectively or individually at functions.

Dad was a great natural tenor who sang with his choir book upside-down because he instinctively 'knew' what sounded right for the tenor's harmony. He did not always sing the part exactly as written, but always was his voice in near-perfect harmony with the entire choir.

Mom always sang Soprano. Her voice was, and still is at 79, Angelic. Had it so been her desire, I have no doubt whatsoever that she could have had quite a successful career singing professionally. I guess life with Dad and 'us kids' was more appealing to her than a life of fame and fortune. "Thank you God!" It was always my interpretation that the rest of the family 7 pretty much sang 'around' mom although there was no lack of quality in any of our voices. My sister sings an excellent Alto, my three brothers voices were respectively: tenor, baritone/base, tenor/baritone/base [as needed ;-)]. I the youngest, and wanting to sing a different part like everyone else was doing, would try to sing a harmony that no one else in my family was singing at the moment. For some reason, I was usually able to find and sing a new harmony.

I learned a Lot about harmony from my family. Our Vocal Harmony extended into family harmony. We were valued for our uniqueness and learned to integrate it into loving relationship.

I know from experience that harmony is possible. I know that it is also peaceful and desirable.

The day when the whole Human Family lives in Harmony, I know is yet far from accomplishment. But that day comes progressively closer as each of us adds the co-operative uniqueness of our own voice to the Universal Chorus.

Your Voice of Love makes a Difference.

Let us Sing!

Today's Service is offered by: Minister Sheila Jean Burgher

Welcome by: Pastor Daniel

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to The Church that is Within.

This weekend, Thursday through Sunday, Ministers Jill, Sheila, Tom and I attended the '99 NWTeaM Conference near Joseph, Oregon at Lake Wallowa. It was a Beautiful weekend of Love and Sharing and Growth, held in an Awe Inspiring Location.

We scheduled to do the Sunday Morning Worship Service at the conference, and that is why Today's service is coming to you as a Sunday Evening Service. I recorded the Service which Minister Sheila gave today in the form of a Prayer. Minister Jill Transcribed the tape as soon as we got home from the trip, and we present it to you as it was done this morning 'live'.

[Note: Since it was a conference of Urantia Paper readers, the name Michael is used in the Service. Since most of you may not have read the Urantia Papers yet, there may be some confusion as to whom Michael might be. From the Urantia reader perspective, Michael would be the Son of God we know as Jesus... as in, Jesus would be his human name. You may insert the name Jesus wherever "Michael" is used in the Service if you prefer. The meaning will be the same as the 'presenter' intended.]

And Now.... without further adooo.... Minister 'She'....

Dear Grand and Loving Father,

We wish you today, the greatest of all moments, a grand Father's Day.
Father, I looked up at the mountains today, so beautiful and majestic, and in that moment I felt so small. And in the next moment I thought of you, and I felt so big.

We gather here as your children to send you praise, and the deepest of our love, which is you. And we look forward to each graduation of our eternal journey, knowing that each step we take, we will understand and be able to embrace you more fully. We thank you for your son, our Brother/Father Michael.

Michael, we pray that we continue to discover the true meaning of your example here, that we can just forget about that which does not serve our purpose or your purpose, or our Father's purpose. We pray that we can continue to find ways to treat this beautiful planet the way you would have us treat it. And we pray that we continue to love each other more like you love us--unconditionally with no judgment.

Michael, I pray that you save us from ourselves, from our limitations, from our fears. I pray that when we look in the mirror, we see you as a reminder of how to conduct our day. I pray that we gain the courage every day to surrender one more part of that which we think we have to control so that we can become the servants that we know we are.

Michael, I pray for all the inventors. I pray for their freedom that they can create with the foundation of love to heal this planet, to heal our bodies. I pray that we listen and can discern that which is done in the foundation of your love.

Mother, I pray that each and every one of us, all of your children, will take just a moment each day to receive your ever so loving and nurturing qualities to provide strength and understanding so that we may nurture one another, so that we may nurture the animals and this planet, so that we nurture our bodies and our minds.

We pray for all of the fathers, and their fathers, and their fathers before them, that they may be released of all burdens and be drenched in a love that is truly who they are that is within. We pray for the future fathers, all the fathers here. They're just God's little boys.

May we look into each other's faces and giggle and embrace the child within us, the happy-go-lucky child of God.

Thank you guides and angels for being with us, for sharing this weekend.

Amen.

Love, Sheila

(From: the RSV Bible - Matthew 18:1-4)
At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

(From: the Urantia Papers - Paper-131 Section-1)
At all times call upon his name, and as you believe in his name, so shall your prayer be heard. What a great honor it is to worship the Most High! All the worlds and the universes worship the Most High. And with all your prayers give thanks--ascend to worship. Prayerful worship shuns evil and forbids sin. At all times let us praise the name of the Most High. The man who takes shelter in the Most High conceals his defects from the universe. When you stand before God with a clean heart, you become fearless of all creation. The Most High is like a loving father and mother; he really loves us, his children on earth. Our God will forgive us and guide our footsteps into the ways of salvation. He will take us by the hand and lead us to himself. God saves those who trust him; he does not compel man to serve his name.

(From: the RSV Bible - Psalms 46:10)
"Be still, and know that I am God."

The Sermon
***********
Recently, my granddaughter, Kassidy, turned two. I have been reflecting on what I have seen in her these last two years. When she was first born I saw her almost every day. I found spending time with this precious newborn child was a way for me to center myself. Suddenly it was easier to meditate and spend time in silence. The work I do is sometimes very stressful and very frustrating. I would often stop by her house after work and just hold her in silence. That put everything in perspective. I was able to be very calm and still. I was able to sense and appreciate what was important in life and to realize that the chaos and confusion in people's life is not what is meant to be.

I look at her now: a 30 pound bundle of energy who walks (or rather runs) and who talks in sentences in two languages. Watching her learn is one of the most fascinating and rewarding experiences I have ever had. Everything is a new and awesome experience for her. Her delight in the little things in life is truly amazing to watch. She can't pass a flower or a bird without stopping to see it, smell it, touch it--or even sometimes to taste it. She savors everything about life. The other thing about young children is, in spite of their energy levels, they are not in a hurry about anything. Kassidy is content to stroll along, which gives her time to see the birds and the flowers and the bugs. She reminds me always, by her presence, to slow down. If I am in a hurry, I should be in a hurry to explore all of life's possibilities. There is no need to hurry to appointments and through stop lights and to finish one thing merely to go on to the next. Stopping to smell the flowers, or watch a nest full of baby birds, or to pick up dirt, or watch a caterpillar, IS important.

And then I look at what has happened these last two years.

In the very beginning of our lives, we are beings with no ears, noses, eyes or mouth. We are quiet. We are not aware of color, creed, gender or economic status. We do not judge our size nor physical beauty. We do not work; in fact, we depend on another for everything. Yet we do not judge ourselves as being lazy. We know nothing, but we do not judge ourselves as lacking in any ability. If fact, we do not know that we know so little. We do not think of ourselves as being inadequate in any way. We are content little human beings, growing into ourselves; growing into life itself.

Those around us are generally tolerant to let us be. To let us grow as we need to; to unfold gently like the spring flowers coming into bloom. If we are fortunate, we live in an atmosphere where those around us not only understand our state of relative nothingness, but support us in that. Even if we are surrounded by people who are less than patient with us; we will continue to grow. There is a universal life force, surrounding all of us, calling us into being, helping us to become who we are. The help is free; no strings attached. It is a loving force of life, at first nourishing us in the womb of our mothers, and later sustaining us as more independent little people. This energy is the Source of all Life; The Supreme; The Higher Power; The Divine; God. The energy is not seen, nor heard. In a literal sense it is not tasted nor smelled.

Kassidy is content with her life. She doesn't know what she doesn't know. She makes few judgments about people with regard to their color or race or creed. Her only reactions seem to be a reflection of her internal self. She still trusts what she senses and acts on that. Sometimes I wonder how long it will be before Kassidy forgets this. How long before she is no longer in touch with her life force or willing to trust what she senses? How long before her sense of awe and wonder disappears? How long before she has to make a conscious effort, like we do, to be connected to God? I even watch her with regard to her naps. That afternoon nap is like a recharge for her. Almost like she goes and gets plugged in. I wonder if that's what meditation and prayer time is supposed to be like for us?

Go back to the beginning. No eyes, no voice, no ears. Do nothing. Hear nothing. Know nothing. Floating in a sea of nothingness. Totally dependent. Suspended.

It is little wonder that holding Kassidy as a tiny infant was such a meditative process. I can think of no better description. Entering into a state of nothingness, dependent on a Higher Life Source, non-judgmental, fearless, not responsible for anyone or anything. We spent nine months like that and survived! And yet today, we find it difficult to spend five or ten minutes a day quietly reflecting on life. It is difficult for us to imagine turning our whole being over to the care of someone else.

How to meditate? Be still. "Be still and know." "Be still and know God." Nowhere in there does it talk about a need for formal prayer or even training. Nowhere does it talk about the frenzied lifestyles we have created. Nowhere are there rules about who can and who can't. It's simple.....Be still. Perhaps this is part of what Jesus had in mind when he said we must become like little children to enter the kingdom of heaven.

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
Everything I need is to be found in the stillness of life. Sitting in stillness and darkness lets there be enough space so that I can be filled up with light and love and the wisdom of knowing my heavenly Father. Thank you for providing me the time and the space. Allow me the wisdom to take the time to BE STILL.

Amen.
