A parish priest was being honored at a dinner on the twenty-fifth anniversary of his arrival in that parish. A leading local politician, who was a member of the congregation, was chosen to make the presentation and give a little speech at the dinner, but he was delayed in traffic, so the priest decided to say his own few words while they waited. "You will understand," he said, "the seal of the confessional, can never be broken. However, I got my first impressions of the parish from the first confession I heard here. I can only hint vaguely about this, but when I came here twenty-five years ago I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place. The very first chap who entered my confessional told me how he had stolen a television set, and when stopped by the police, had almost murdered the officer. Further, he told me he had embezzled money from his place of business and had an affair with his boss's wife. I was appalled. But as the days went on I knew that my people were not all like that, and I had, indeed come to, a fine parish full of understanding and loving people."
Just as the priest finished his talk, the politician arrived full of apologies at being late. He immediately began to make the presentation and give his talk. "I'll never forget the first day our parish priest arrived in this parish," said the politician. "In fact, I had the honor of being the first one to go to him in confession…"

(From: Alfred Korzybski (1879 - 1950)
There are two ways to slide easily through life; to believe everything or to doubt everything. Both ways save us from thinking.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 5:10)
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

(From: Lois McMaster Bujold)
If the truth doesn't save us, what does that say about us?

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-150 Section-5)
It is forever true, `the just shall live by faith.' Entrance into the Father's kingdom is wholly free, but progress--growth in grace--is essential to continuance therein.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 24:13)
But he who endures to the end will be saved.

(From: Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900 - 1944)
What saves a man is to take a step. Then another step. It is always the same step, but you have to take it.

(From: Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (121 AD - 180 AD)
How much time he saves who does not look to see what his neighbor says or does or thinks.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-150 Section-5)
“You are not to be saved because you live a righteous life; rather is it that you live a righteous life because you have already been saved, have recognized sonship as the gift of God and service in the kingdom as the supreme delight of life on earth.

(From: Ham 12/16/91 – the Woods Cross TeaM)
All who desire to know God and find their way in His bountiful Kingdom are welcome. No man may close the door my Father has opened. Abundant is His knowing, understanding and merciful forgiveness, and indeed, His joy at finding His lost children. Many of His children feel that they must hide a part, a secret part, from His loving gaze. This is not true. Our Father knows your hearts, and by your willingness to open your secret places to Him are you increasingly strengthened and indeed, SAVED. His love is ever ready to respond to every opening of His children. By His power have you truly power. By His strength have you strength. By His love have you love. It is by increasing to the opening of your innermost being that you increase your God-knowingness and God-likeness, and by this you become a living channel for His light and love. Fear has no place between our Father and His children. Knowing His love is all that is required.

(From: The KJV Bible - Luke 7:50)
"Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."

Humor of the Week

It rained for days and days and there was a terrific flood. The water rose so high that one man was forced to climb on top of his roof and sit in the rain.
As the waters came up higher a man in a rowboat came up to the house and told him to get in.         "No thank you, the Lord will save me!" he said, and the man in the rowboat rowed away.         The waters rose to the edge of the roof and still the man sat on the roof until a motorboat came by and another man told him to get in. "No thank you, the Lord will save me!" he said again, and the second man also went his way.
The waters covered the house and the man was forced to sit on his chimney. As the rain poured down, a helicopter came by and another man urged him to get in or he'd drown. "No thank you," the man said again, "The Lord will save me!" After much begging and pleading the man in the helicopter gave up and flew away.
The waters rose above the chimney and the man drowned and went to heaven where he met God. "Lord, I don't understand," he told Him, frustrated, "The waters rose higher and higher and I waited hours for you to save me but you didn't! Why?"
The Lord just shook his head and said, "What are you talking about my child? I sent for you two boats and a helicopter?!"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #336, is Priority/Priorities…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: Victor Kiam)
What's really important in life? Sitting on a beach? Looking at television eight hours a day? I think we have to appreciate that we're alive for only a limited period of time, and we'll spend most of our lives working. That being the case, I believe one of the most important priorities is to do whatever we do as well as we can. We should take pride in that.

(From: Elyon 1/5/997 – the North Idaho TeaM)
Do not waste any energy on guilt or sorrow for not having devoted enough time in your minds to the mission, as all things go in cycles. Simply address yourself to picking up where you have left off and to moving forward. It is helpful in your move forward to reestablish your practice patterns. As a good musical student knows, you simply must devote and allocate the time to the practice of the making of the music before the music can easily flow. Likewise with learning, and attuning your spirit to higher lessons. This involves a practice, a return to helpful learning habits. The change of the year is a perfect time to examine your priorities. Recommit to those priorities that you feel are worthy, perhaps even shake loose those priorities you deem no longer worthy. I would encourage you to do a self-exam and go over in your mind those aspects of your lifestyle and your habits that you deem worth spending and allocating the time on, and those habits and lifestyles which no longer seem as important as they once may have been. Take this opportunity to adopt your highest ideal and to let go your lowest ideal. You will see the positive effects if you do this.

(From: Robert J. McKain)
Set priorities for your goals. A major part of successful living lies in the ability to put first things first. Indeed, the reason most major goals are not achieved is that we spend our time doing second things first.

(From: Tom Hopkins)
Getting in touch with your true self must be your first priority.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-174 Section-1)
"A part of every father lives in the child. The father enjoys priority and superiority of understanding in all matters connected with the child-parent relationship. The parent is able to view the immaturity of the child in the light of the more advanced parental maturity, the riper experience of the older partner. With the earthly child and the heavenly Father, the divine parent possesses infinity and divinity of sympathy and capacity for loving understanding. Divine forgiveness is inevitable; it is inherent and inalienable in God's infinite understanding, in his perfect knowledge of all that concerns the mistaken judgment and erroneous choosing of the child. Divine justice is so eternally fair that it unfailingly embodies understanding mercy.
"When a wise man understands the inner impulses of his fellows, he will love them. And when you love your brother, you have already forgiven him. This capacity to understand man's nature and forgive his apparent wrongdoing is Godlike. If you are wise parents, this is the way you will love and understand your children, even forgive them when transient misunderstanding has apparently separated you. The child, being immature and lacking in the fuller understanding of the depth of the child-father relationship, must frequently feel a sense of guilty separation from a father's full approval, but the true father is never conscious of any such separation.”

(From: H. L. Hunt)
Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. Establish your priorities and go to work.

(From: Muriel 9/14/99 - http://tmarchives.com)
"Always must you remember to set time for being with the Father in the stillness. This is your anchor, your root, your starting point each day. From there you flow upward and outward in love and service. When your priorities are in order, then is your life in order and in harmony. Everything flows smoother and in harmony with the will of the Father, when you ask that he be an integral part of each moment of your day. Then shall you walk with God in the awareness of his presence with you and he shall direct your path in your service for him among his little ones brought into your sphere of influence. He is indeed the vine and you are his branches. You have been pruned and nurtured and fed and now must you produce fruits of His spirit in your life. His spirit essence will flow through you, his mind, his nature will become a part of you. Thus do you experience soul growth in your struggles in life, in your nurturing process. It is for you to be a "willing branch," naturally yielding to the flow of love coming into your very nature, into your own personality, from your First Source and Center. Thus are you on your way to "becoming perfect as he is perfect."

The Sermon
***********
If I can Genuinely say, that my Relationship with… that my desire to Be like… that my Awareness of… that my utter childlike Faith and Trust in God---is my “Number One Priority” in any one moment, then have I indeed tasted of True Success. For when God is my “Number One Priority,” then is Unreserved Love my Mode of Operation… my Method of Acting… my Way of Being… my Personal Experience… in that very moment. Truly it is a moment worthy of Savoring for Eternity.

Ahh… but one moment is not Enough, Is it? It is like going to a lavish Banquet and eating only a single Potato Chip… There is so much More on the Table to be experienced… to be Appreciated. Think Not, that you are an unwelcome guest at this “Affair” for truly You are the Guest of Honor, it has been Prepared for you and Offered To you by your All-Loving Creator Parent. It is your birthright and your Inheritance as a dearly beloved Child of God. It laid out before you… awaiting only your present choices.

I can do nothing of the Past moments which, in my Spiritual immaturity, I failed or chose not to Share with God… but I can allow those moments that I Did enjoy in unison and in unity with God to modify my choices… if I so will.

And, I can do nothing of my Future moments with God but to faithfully “Plan For” them, until those moments come into being… I should waste no time in regrets nor in self-pity lest those future moments pass me by unawares, unshared, as have far too many in the past.

Only can I consciously share THIS moment with my Divine Parent. Only can I spend time “Right Now” in the Nourishing Presence of Gods Unconditional Love. Only Then am I partaking of the entire Feast prepared for me.

When God is my Number One Priority… then Love Also is my Number One Priority and All other priorities important to me and to my spiritual wellbeing seem to miraculously organize themselves into the most appropriate and Love Yielding order.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Have you ever noticed how when you are in the act of unselfish service to someone, the majority of your worries and pains seem to disappear during the time while you are so engaged? It's Amazing, but I find it to be the case almost invariably. Why Is that do you think?

The topic of today's Sunday Service #337 is, once again, Service…

(From: Somerset Maugham)
The ability to quote is a serviceable substitute for wit. ;-)

(From: Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936), The Elephant's Child (1902))
I keep six honest serving-men (They taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When And How and Where and Who.

(From: Sir Wilfred T. Grenfell)
The service we render to others is really the rent we pay for our room on this earth. It is obvious that man is himself a traveler; that the purpose of this world is not "to have and to hold" but "to give and serve." There can be no other meaning.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-140 Section-4)
The highest levels of self-realization are attained by worship and service. The happy and effective person is motivated, not by fear of wrongdoing, but by love of right doing.

(From: The RSV Bible - Mark 9:35)
And he sat down and called the twelve; and he said to them, "If any one would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all."

(From: 5/24/92 – the South Idaho TeaM)
Service is that action that you do in the line of your duty to the Father's will. If you truly love the First Source and Center, if you truly desire to follow His path, then your next step is that of service. And this service means that you must give help, be a part of others lives and do so in the spirit of love. Be mindful that if ever you are feeling you are being of service for another, and you do so without full love, without full consent, then you are not in true service, true fellowship. That which you do for one another should never require sacrifice, but rather should be done with open arms, with complete understanding, without judgment, with no hypocrisy involved. This is service.

(From: The RSV Bible - Galatians 5:13-14)
For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants of one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-156 Section-5)
Spiritual living mightily increases true self-respect. But self-respect is not self-admiration. Self-respect is always co-ordinate with the love and service of one's fellows. It is not possible to respect yourself more than you love your neighbor; the one is the measure of the capacity for the other.

(From: Woodrow Wilson (1856 - 1924)
There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed.

(From: '92 transcripts - the Kona HI TeaM)
Let us be ever in the moment. It is our destiny to love one another. What else could be important? All things follow the way of love. Reach out to your fellows. They need you and you need them. The way is clear, crystal clear. Delight in the simple pleasures of knowing one another, and service. Bear the fruits of the spirit, patience and tolerance. Love is the flower which grows from fertile soil. Water the garden of your soul. Drink in the beauty.

(From: Elbert Hubbard (1856 - 1915)
Men are rich only as they give. He who gives great service gets great rewards.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-157 Section-2)
And when the feelings of service for your fellow men arise within your soul, do not stifle them; when the emotions of love for your neighbor well up within your heart, give expression to such urges of affection in intelligent ministry to the real needs of your fellows."

(From: 01/13/92 – the Talahassee TeaM)
By service, then, shall you each show your love and respect for the Father, one to the other. Because of your simple dedication to loving service, you are on the high road -- even, the highest.

(From: Hannah More)
One kernel is felt in a hogshead; one drop of water helps to swell the ocean; a spark of fire helps to give light to the world. None are too small, too feeble, too poor to be of service. Think of this and act.

The Sermon
***********
-Service-
Work done by one person or group that benefits another. An act of help or assistance.

The differing levels of Being in Service can be likened to a story of three guests who arrived too early to the Party…

A couple was hosting a large cocktail and dinner party for their friends and acquaintances. Though they had been preparing now for a number of days, they still found that they had a number of tasks to accomplish before they were ready for guests. There was still an hour and a half until the specified get together time, but if they hurried and were efficient, they might make it.

        The doorbell rang.

“Lord NO!” the Hostess cried. “Not Yet!” She went to the front door and sheepishly opened it to see who was there. It was an acquaintance of her husbands who said, “Is This where the Party is?” then proceeded to step inside. A little flustered she said the only thing that came to her, “Yes it is. But it's a little early and we aren't quite ready yet.” “Don't mind me,” he returned, “I'll just sit and wait here on the couch… would you mind getting me something to drink and munch on while I wait?”
“Dear Father in Heaven,” she thought to herself as she headed for the kitchen, “I'll Never get ready in time at This rate!” Her husband (who was also extremely busy with the preparations), after his wife apprized him of what had just happened said, “I'll take care of it. I'll see if he could help us maybe.” Only a bit relieved, our Hostess went frantically back to her tasks.
The Host went out to greet his guest, and asked him if he wouldn't mind helping them a bit to get ready. “What. You need me to help?” the acquaintance said reluctantly, “Well yeah… I guess… if you really Need me to I could help you out.” Begrudgingly, he rose from the sofa and followed the Host into the preparation area. “Well, what do you want me to do?” he said unenthusiastically.
He did help, somewhat, but he also got in the way equally as much… the couple were getting further behind. And then…

Again the front doorbell rang. Now even more frustrated, the Hostess answered the door to discover one of her card playing friends who entered the doorway and said, “Hi, I'm not too Early am I?” “A little,” the Hostess said, “but come on in anyway.” The friend replied, “Take me to where the Action is!” Mistaking this response from her friend as volunteering to help, the Hostess led the way into the kitchen where the friend sat down in a chair and began to chatter about their last card game together. The Hostess knew she couldn't converse and work at the same time with all she had to keep organized in her mind, so she asked her friend to help out with a few things in the other room. “Well, Yes! Of Course! I'd be Glad to,” the friend remarked, “Just tell me what to Do!” Her friend worked willingly… in-between conversations… and was actually being a help to them when…

The doorbell rang yet a Third time…

The stress really hit her this time. Visibly frazzled, the Hostess opened the front with a little extra gusto and looked glaringly into the face of the newest “Early Guest.” It was her Neighbor, a kindly and Spiritual man who somehow always seemed to be in the Right Place at the Right Time.
He looked into her eyes and realizing her disquiet… he felt compassion and immediately offered, “I came a little early to see if maybe there is something I can do to assist you in getting ready for the Party. Show me to where I can be the most help?”
He seemed to be able to “Sense” what needed to be accomplished and immediately began to help. Though he worked enthusiastically, he never got in the way and even managed to elicit a hardier and more focused cooperation from the other two “early guests.”

Everything was Finally Ready! They all heaved a Sigh of Relief… and as they raised their glasses in Toast…

        The doorbell rang…

…and the Party Began.

Quotes

(From: David Riesman)
The idea that men are created free and equal is both true and misleading: men are created different; they lose their social freedom and their individual autonomy in seeking to become like each other.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-178 Section-1)
Sonship in the kingdom, from the standpoint of advancing civilization, should assist you in becoming the ideal citizens of the kingdoms of this world since brotherhood and service are the cornerstones of the gospel of the kingdom. The love call of the spiritual kingdom should prove to be the effective destroyer of the hate urge of the unbelieving and war-minded citizens of the earthly kingdoms. But these material-minded sons in darkness will never know of your spiritual light of truth unless you draw very near them with that unselfish social service which is the natural outgrowth of the bearing of the fruits of the spirit in the life experience of each individual believer.

(From: Ham 1991 – the Woods Cross TeaM)
Loving service is the basis of the social fruits of all true religious experience. The more you serve your fellows, the more increased level of awareness of them and understanding of them, comes increasing love and devotion to God. The more you understand your fellows, the more you love them. The more you serve your fellows, the more you love them. These three aspects of life: understanding, spiritual awareness, and service are love based and love dominated.

(From: Lillian Eichler Watson)
Don't reserve your best behavior for special occasions. You can't have two sets of manners, two social codes - one for those you admire and want to impress, another for those whom you consider unimportant. You must be the same to all people.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-99 Section-3)
Religionists, as a group, must never concern themselves with anything but religion, albeit any one such religionist, as an individual citizen, may become the outstanding leader of some social, economic, or political reconstruction movement.
It is the business of religion to create, sustain, and inspire such a cosmic loyalty in the individual citizen as will direct him to the achievement of success in the advancement of all these difficult but desirable social services.

(From: Benjamin Disraeli (1804 - 1881)
It is knowledge that influences and equalizes the social condition of man; that gives to all, however different their political position, passions which are in common, and enjoyments which are universal.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-99 Section-3)
The religionist is not unsympathetic with social suffering, not unmindful of civil injustice, not insulated from economic thinking, neither insensible to political tyranny. Religion influences social reconstruction directly because it spiritualizes and idealizes the individual citizen. Indirectly, cultural civilization is influenced by the attitude of these individual religionists as they become active and influential members of various social, moral, economic, and political groups.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-56 Section-10)
To finite man truth, beauty, and goodness embrace the full revelation of divinity reality. As this love-comprehension of Deity finds spiritual expression in the lives of God-knowing mortals, there are yielded the fruits of divinity: intellectual peace, social progress, moral satisfaction, spiritual joy, and cosmic wisdom. The advanced mortals on a world in the seventh stage of light and life have learned that love is the greatest thing in the universe--and they know that God is love.

Love is the desire to do good to others.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Early in my career as a Woodsculptor, I carved the figure of a pregnant woman in her 8
th month of pregnancy---left hand on her belly, with her face looking upward in obvious pain and her right hand cradling the side of her head. I was very pleased with the results of my carving, but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out what I should title the piece. I decided to ask 10 different women with children to look at the sculpture and tell me what it reminded them of. Eight of them gave me the same answer. The Title of the Sculpture is: “The Waiting”

Oftentimes the most Difficult thing about being a Human Being is…

Quotes
*******
(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 8:18-26)
I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in travail together until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words.

(From: Abraham 11/12/2000 – the Woods Cross TeaM)
Ponder this if you will, how many beings do you consider when you make plans to complete a project? How can you know how everyone will be affected? Can you find the inner discipline to wait, be patient and allow Father to coordinate destiny? Can you be still and await your instructions?

(From: Isaac Newton)
I keep the subject of my inquiry constantly before me, and wait till the first dawning opens gradually, by little and little, into a full and clear light.

(From: Ham 5/31/01 – the Nashville TeaM)
Learn to trust the Father's spirit who lives within, trust him to guide your thoughts and to give you back new ideas and new perspectives. You don't have to work those things out. Give it to the Father, then let him give back in his time. Everyone wants answers now. No one wants to wait for anything in this culture. The spiritual life requires waiting. Waiting is a good part of wisdom. Trust your mind to the Father. Remember that you don't need to control it and control your thoughts all the time. Realize that every single person on your planet has problems and struggles and worries. But, as Jesus said, worrying can not add a fraction of an inch to your height, or change anything about you.

(From: Alexander Dumas - from: “The Count of Monte Cristo”)
The sum of all human wisdom is contained in these two words: Wait and Hope.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-130 Section-5)
"My son, everything must await the coming of its time. You are born into the world, but no amount of anxiety and no manifestation of impatience will help you to grow up. You must, in all such matters, wait upon time. Time alone will ripen the green fruit upon the tree. Season follows season and sundown follows sunrise only with the passing of time.

(From: The RSV Bible - Galatians 5:5)
For through the Spirit, by faith, we wait for the hope of righteousness.

(From: Welmek - 10/3/02)
My friends, you are all growing in your capacity to trust. Each time you make a decision, whether it is the right one and you have a positive outcome, or whether it is one whose positive outcome will need to await upon time, you are gaining a greater appreciation for the lure towards your own perfection.

(From: Lois McMaster Bujold)
We're not giving up. We're waiting for a better opportunity to win.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-137 Section-4)
“We must in all things wait upon the will of the Father in heaven."

(From: Thomas A. Edison)
Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits.

(From: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)
Let us, then, be up and doing, with a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, learn to labor and to wait.

The Sermon

Waiting upon the Will of the Father is like Growing Tomatoes.

The Wise Gardener, after the planting of the seed, waits for it to sprout. But he waits not idly, for still he must water the soil and pull out the weeds.

When the seed sprouts and pushes its head above the ground, the Gardener must wait for it to grow and develop. But he waits not idly, for still must he water the soil and soon thin out the seedlings lest the plants become overcrowded and stifle their vigorous growth.

After the plants have grown leafy and strong, the Gardener awaits the development of the flowers. He does not pluck them because he knows that they are what develop into the Fruit… and so he waits. But he waits not idly, for still there is work to be done. Still he must water the plants, and he must fertilize them, and remove the insects that endanger the plants wellbeing.

The Tomato plants thrive and little green fruits appear, but they must still grow in size, so still must the Gardener wait. But he waits not idly, for still must he water and provide the proper nutrients and keep the plants pest free so that the fruits may mature.

The Tomatoes on the plants are now large and numerous, but as yet they have not turned the rich red color of ripeness… they still have a bitterness to them… still he waits. But he waits not idly, for still the Gardener must water and cultivate and protect his investment.

His waiting now over, the Gardener plucks a Luscious Ripe Red Tomato. He takes delight in its enticing fragrance as he bites into its Succulent Flavor. The Gardener Savors his Harvest and reminisces on the Supreme Value of his seemingly interminable Waiting.

And then the Gardner saves some seeds for the next seasons wait.

Those with ears to hear, let them hear.
