The Light and Life Sanctuary
**************************
We still have a few patches of snow on the ground after our latest snows, but it is warming up and looks to be in the 50's for the next week. The Spring Busy Time in the Gardens will be upon us relatively Soon now! The buds on the fruit trees and the lilacs seem to be readying for the burst into new growth and I'm anticipating some pretty incredible differences in the look and feel of the property compared to last year at this time. Most of the Fruits we have planted in the past years are nearly doubled in size from what they were a year ago. Our “2004 Tree Drive” has already provided a Walnut Tree, a grafted Four Variety Plum tree (all different from the two previously established), and three “Ebony King” Blackberries! The Blackberries and the Plum tree will likely grace the new Zen Garden, and the Walnuts will be in a newly evolving expansion of the Faith Garden. Thank you All! The First Fruits of the Season should begin ripening sometime in June for those of you who would like to come visit and share in their bounty!

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

This morning's Service by Minister Jill is about something I'm sure we all could use a lot More of… I know I could! May it Inspire you the way it did Me…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #388, is Inner Peace.

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: The KJC Bible – John 16:33)

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

(From: Daniel - 12/31/2002– the SE Idaho TeaM)
I wish to talk about “inner peace” this evening. Peace has often been construed and understood as the absence of conflict, but inner peace can exist at the same time as conflict is occurring in one's mind and heart. This is difficult of explanation for it appears that such a statement as I have just made is inherently contradictory. At the animal level it is. Setting aside the spiritual dimension and focusing only on the physical and mental level, there cannot be tranquility of mind or body when there is conflict. But if you add the third dimension, the spiritual dimension, then it is possible to have inner peace, spiritual peace, while you are in the midst of stress, strain, confusion of the mind and uncertainty as to the future.

(From: The RSV Bible - John 14:27 )
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

(From: Peter Minard)
Not merely an absence of noise, Real Silence begins when a reasonable being withdraws from the noise in order to find peace and order in his inner sanctuary.

(From: Olfana 2/12/94 – the Half Moon Bay TeaM-California)
Inner peace comes from contemplation of goodness--the love sent to you by God, the blessings that come to you in life, the love you give and receive, the beauty of the world surrounding you, the experience of growth. Inner peace is the by-product of contemplation on these things. Your soul perceives truth, beauty, and goodness, and from this derives satisfaction. Consider the concept of satisfaction in connection with the concept of inner peace. When one is satisfied, one has no further expectations of more. One rests content in the moment. This is the experience of inner peace--resting in the moment, satisfied that all God provides to you is sufficient. Here your faith sustains itself. You are all that you need to be in these moments, in your eyes, and the eyes of the Father. You know this with your heart, at these moments.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-3 Section-4)
Mortal man cannot possibly know the infinitude of the heavenly Father. Finite mind cannot think through such an absolute truth or fact. But this same finite human being can actually feel--literally experience--the full and undiminished impact of such an infinite Father's LOVE. Such a love can be truly experienced, albeit while quality of experience is unlimited, quantity of such an experience is strictly limited by the human capacity for spiritual receptivity and by the associated capacity to love the Father in return.

(From: Footprints in the Sand – 1/17/2002 – Cuenca, Ecuador TeaM)
…we have to learn that happiness depends on our inner peace, a peace that we can only obtain with God's help, through His Love.

The Sermon
***********
I wonder how many of you have seen the repeated ads on TV for the new “natural” diet pill that affects how much cortisol the body produces. The ad says that “stress” causes us to produce more cortisol and it creates fat around our middle… and other Obvious parts! After seeing it for about the 50th time in the past few months, I turned to Pastor Daniel last night and said something like, “It seems like it would be better to seek ways to reduce the stress, rather than mess with our body's metabolism.”

What do you think? Hmmm. It was that thought that has led to the topic of today's service… Inner Peace.

Inner Peace, what Is that?

Perhaps it is…
First and foremost, Discovering that You are a beloved child of God,

and Then…
Beginning to Believe it!

and Finally…
Feeling His Love for you every moment of your life and Accepting it!

Hmmm. Could it Really be That simple?

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,

Feeling Your Love gives our lives peace in the throes of adversity.
Thank you.

We ALL are Within the Infinitely Loving Embrace of our Universal Parent.
Feel it. Accept it… and Rejoice.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Do you ever feel scattered, like you are going in many different directions all at once? Don't ya hate it when that happens?

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #389 , is Focus and Attention (or Focusing Attention)…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-152 Section-6)
Jesus taught the appeal to the emotions as the technique of arresting and focusing the intellectual attention. He designated the mind thus aroused and quickened as the gateway to the soul, where there resides that spiritual nature of man which must recognize truth and respond to the spiritual appeal of the gospel in order to afford the permanent results of true character transformations.

(From: Jiddu Krishnamurti)
When we talk about understanding, surely it takes place only when the mind listens completely-- the mind being your heart, your nerves, your ears - when you give your whole attention to it.

(From: Norson 1/5/93 – the Kona HI TeaM)
The heart is an important place to focus attention. The words are not as important as the vibrational quality of your love. To create this vibration, focus your attention on the Father. This is how Christ was able to love everyone and set Himself aside. This is not sacrifice, this is giving of the Father's love, it is quite a simple matter. The practices are important to adjust yourself. Practice daily and know yourself through the Father's love. As time goes on this becomes easier.

(From: Isaac Newton (1642 - 1727)
If I have ever made any valuable discoveries, it has been owing more to patient attention, than to any other talent.

(From: Jiddu Krishnamurti)
So when you are listening to somebody, completely, attentively, then you are listening not only to the words, but also to the feeling of what is being conveyed, to the whole of it, not part of it.

(From: Samuel Butler (1835 - 1902)
If we attend continually and promptly to the little that we can do, we shall ere long be surprised to find how little remains that we cannot do.

(From: Robert J. Shiller, Irrational Exuberance)
The ability to focus attention on important things is a defining characteristic of intelligence.

(From: Solonia - 3/13/04 The Faith Garden TeaM)
Whatever your hand finds to do, give it your full attention. Whomever you chance to be with, give them your full focus. When you practice the Stillness, this attentive focus is what you seek with our Father.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-143 Section-7)
Prayer is self-reminding--sublime thinking; worship is self-forgetting--superthinking. Worship is effortless attention, true and ideal soul rest, a form of restful spiritual exertion.

(From: The RSV Bible - Proverbs 2:2-5)
…making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you cry out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-4)
You cannot truly love your fellows by a mere act of the will. Love is only born of thoroughgoing understanding of your neighbor's motives and sentiments. It is not so important to love all men today as it is that each day you learn to love one more human being. If each day or each week you achieve an understanding of one more of your fellows, and if this is the limit of your ability, then you are certainly socializing and truly spiritualizing your personality. Love is infectious, and when human devotion is intelligent and wise, love is more catching than hate. But only genuine and unselfish love is truly contagious. If each mortal could only become a focus of dynamic affection, this benign virus of love would soon pervade the sentimental emotion-stream of humanity to such an extent that all civilization would be encompassed by love, and that would be the realization of the brotherhood of man.

(From: Anthony J. D'Angelo, The College Blue Book)
Focus 90% of your time on solutions and only 10% of your time on problems.

(From: Saint Benedict)
Listen and attend with the ear of your heart.

(From: The RSV Bible - Proverbs 4:20-22)
My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to him who finds them, and healing to all his flesh.

(From: Solonia - 3/13/04 The Faith Garden TeaM)
Where you focus and place your attention, is where your heart and soul will undoubtedly follow. Let it be upon Truth, Beauty, Goodness and Love.

(From: The RSV Bible - Isaiah 42:23)
Who among you will give ear to this, will attend and listen for the time to come?

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #90, is Attitude…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-2 Section-5)
"God is love"; therefore his only personal attitude towards the affairs of the universe is always a reaction of divine affection. The Father loves us sufficiently to bestow his life upon us.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-4)
In the mind's eye conjure up a picture of one of your primitive ancestors of cave-dwelling times--a short, misshapen, filthy, snarling hulk of a man standing, legs spread, club upraised, breathing hate and animosity as he looks fiercely just ahead. Such a picture hardly depicts the divine dignity of man. But allow us to enlarge the picture. In front of this animated human crouches a saber-toothed tiger. Behind him, a woman and two children. Immediately you recognize that such a picture stands for the beginnings of much that is fine and noble in the human race, but the man is the same in both pictures. Only in the second sketch you are favored with a widened horizon. You therein discern the motivation of this evolving mortal. His attitude becomes praiseworthy because you understand him. If you could only fathom the motives of your associates, how much better you would understand them. If you could only know your fellows, you would eventually fall in love with them.

(From: a Song by Mary Rogers)
Life's a Challenge…
to your Attitude.

(From: Tomas 6/2/02 – the Rio Rancho, NM TeaM)
Usually if you look for good, if you have a positive attitude, you will find good reflected back to you, and this indeed augments human happiness all the way around.

(From: Patricia Neal)
A strong positive mental attitude will create more miracles than any wonder drug.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-99 Section-3)
The religionist is not unsympathetic with social suffering, not unmindful of civil injustice, not insulated from economic thinking, neither insensible to political tyranny. Religion influences social reconstruction directly because it spiritualizes and idealizes the individual citizen. Indirectly, cultural civilization is influenced by the attitude of these individual religionists as they become active and influential members of various social, moral, economic, and political groups.

(From: Teacher Daniel - 12/10/93– the S.E.Idaho TeaM)
As you are very much aware, your attitude in any given situation colors your thoughts, colors your actions, and colors your perception. When you maintain a daily connection with the Indwelling Spirit and the First Source and Center, when this communication is daily met, you will find that your attitude will take on more of the fruits of the Spirit. When there is breakdown in this communication there is the risk that your attitude will also find a more narrow perspective.

(From: Mahatma Gandhi)
In the attitude of silence the soul finds the path in a clearer light, and what is elusive and deceptive resolves itself into crystal clearness. Our life is a long and arduous quest after Truth.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-146 Section-2)
The cry of the righteous is the faith act of the child of God which opens the door of the Father's storehouse of goodness, truth, and mercy, and these good gifts have long been in waiting for the son's approach and personal appropriation. Prayer does not change the divine attitude toward man, but it does change man's attitude toward the changeless Father. The motive of the prayer gives it right of way to the divine ear, not the social, economic, or outward religious status of the one who prays.

(From: Ham - 1992 – the Early Woods Cross TeaM)
Humility is the true attitude of the soul in its open and receptive form. Humility is becoming to all, for it shows the willingness of each person to be God-led, God-directed, and God-revealing.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-155 Section-6)
Many of your brethren have minds which accept the theory of God while they spiritually fail to realize the presence of God. And that is just the reason why I have so often taught you that the kingdom of heaven can best be realized by acquiring the spiritual attitude of a sincere child. It is not the mental immaturity of the child that I commend to you but rather the spiritual simplicity of such an easy-believing and fully-trusting little one. It is not so important that you should know about the fact of God as that you should increasingly grow in the ability to feel the presence of God.

(From: William James (1842 - 1910)
Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.

(From: Bertram - 11/16/98 the Cambridge, Ontario, Canada TeaM)
All must realize that the past mistakes cannot be changed. Present acts can. Present attitudes regarding the past can be changed, now. With that change in attitude, a change in understanding can become a turning point towards the healing of the pains of the past that still haunts and hurts him.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-7)
Jesus was an unusually cheerful person, but he was not a blind and unreasoning optimist. His constant word of exhortation was, "Be of good cheer." He could maintain this confident attitude because of his unswerving trust in God and his unshakable confidence in man. He was always touchingly considerate of all men because he loved them and believed in them.

(From: Linda Dillow, "Calm My Anxious Heart")
Ultimately, contentment is more a shift in attitude than a change in circumstances.

(From: Sue Patton Thoele)
Abundance is, in large part, an attitude.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Today, let's discuss the crucial role that attitude plays in life. Attitude may compel one to the heights of Spiritual Growth and increased Wisdom. Attitude also has the ability to lower you into the deepest pits of despair and depression.

Attitude is one part of life that we always have a moderate level of control over, and it would behoove us all to exercise this control for the betterment of our own lives, and of those around us. Attitude is a state of mind, an expression of Personality, and a vehicle to take us through the challenges of life. How we use that vehicle is up to us.

Look upon those things that negatively challenge you the most, and consider whether or not a mere change of attitude could relieve much of the personal struggle. Also look at those things in your life that give you higher levels of personal satisfaction and renewed energy. How is your attitude different toward these things?

There are many challenges to our attitude in times such as we happen to live in. There is so much that stimulates the ego to want to control the attitude---War, Ignorance, Politics, Inconsiderateness, Fear, Prejudice, and outright Hatred---all of the things that ego feels it has the best control over. For in fact those Are the attitudes of ego, are they not? And yet look about you. You will see people helping people, caring for others, people who Enjoy Life and Serve unselfishly, working as if they work for God Himself (as if they don't). You can detect an attitude of Joy, of Excitement for Life. Somehow they have discovered an attitude of Inner Peace and intelligent optimism. For them, challenges stimulate action, stimulate their resolve for Goodness, Truth and Beauty.

Remembering that you are first and foremost a Child of the Creator, a Much Loved Child of God, has a huge impact upon your attitude (as does forgetting). Knowing that You Personally, are Loved by your Infinite Parent can stimulate those Soul Attitudes of Universal Brotherhood and Unconditional Love that are indicative of an Intimate Relationship with the Universal Father.

We often think that we are so mature, so grown up, and yet are we not better served by the attitude of a trusting and inquisitive and adventurous, always hopeful little child?

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Lord,
Help me with my Attitude. Help me to make it more like Yours!

You ALL are Within the Infinitely Loving Embrace of our Universal
Parent,

The Creator's Infinite Love to all of You,

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #391, is Ego/Self…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: “The Angel Stones Oracle”
Ó 1999 - #1)
The ego acts in and from fear. The Soul acts in and from Love. Now is an optimum time for you to make progress on your Spiritual Path. If you choose to act in Love, you will succeed in learning this lesson. If instead you choose again to act in fear, you will be given another, possibly more difficult and more painful opportunity, to make the choice all over again.

(From: Abraham – 12/1/03 – the Woods Cross TeaM)
To learn one has to be teachable and the soul is naturally that. Mortal conditioning, animal nature, possibly up-bringing would have the ego believe it is already with all knowledge. The soul within is a child and with eyes that are anxious for adventure. To serve Father, to understand His will, there is personal cost. There is that surrendering child who is driven to absorb, to live out to the best of ability the understanding of Father's will.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 18:3-5)
"Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. "Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-103 Section-2)
Man tends to identify the urge to be self-serving with his ego--himself. In contrast he is inclined to identify the will to be altruistic with some influence outside himself--God. And indeed is such a judgment right, for all such nonself desires do actually have their origin in the leadings of the indwelling Thought Adjuster, and this Adjuster is a fragment of God.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 23:11-12)
He who is greatest among you shall be your servant; whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-103 Section-5)
Human happiness is achieved only when the ego desire of the self and the altruistic urge of the higher self (divine spirit) are co-ordinated and reconciled by the unified will of the integrating and supervising personality. The mind of evolutionary man is ever confronted with the intricate problem of refereeing the contest between the natural expansion of emotional impulses and the moral growth of unselfish urges predicated on spiritual insight--genuine religious reflection.

(From: Colin Powell)
Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-48 Section-6)
When you feel important, you lose energy to the wear and tear of ego dignity so that there is little energy left to do the work. Self-importance, not work-importance, exhausts immature creatures; it is the self element that exhausts, not the effort to achieve. You can do important work if you do not become self-important; you can do several things as easily as one if you leave yourself out.

(From: Tomas 6/30/02 – the Rio Rancho, NM TeaM)
No, ego is not the automatic enemy. It is when the ego interferes with the drive to be Godlike and grow in God's likeness, that the ego can be obstructionistic to growth, and it can help you turn a blind eye to that which is in your true best interest.

(From: The RSV Bible - Luke 10:27)
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."

(From: George Santayana (1863 - 1952), Winds of Doctrine)
Intolerance itself is a form of egoism, and to condemn egoism intolerantly is to share it.

(From: Levona - 1/21/2000– the Garden TeaM)
Expectations are a human concept. They are tied to ego consciousness. Your ego wants “things” to feel secure. It wants to feel loved. You set yourself up for disappointments with these longings when it is not God you look to, to give them to you.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-48 Section-4)
When we are tempted to magnify our self-importance, if we stop to contemplate the infinity of the greatness and grandeur of our Makers, our own self-glorification becomes sublimely ridiculous, even verging on the humorous. One of the functions of humor is to help all of us take ourselves less seriously. Humor is the divine antidote for exaltation of ego.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 6:34)
"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-178 Section-1)
Throughout the vicissitudes of life, remember always to love one another. Do not strive with men, even with unbelievers. Show mercy even to those who despitefully abuse you. Show yourselves to be loyal citizens, upright artisans, praiseworthy neighbors, devoted kinsmen, understanding parents, and sincere believers in the brotherhood of the Father's kingdom. And my spirit shall be upon you, now and even to the end of the world.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
It isn't very difficult really, to identify those human actions/reactions that demonstrate Ego involvement. I'm quite sure each of us could list close to a hundred… just for example---anxiety, fear, jealousy, regret, self importance---those kinds of things. The incessant drive for power, control, money, importance… why is it that ego so craves these?

Do you ever wonder what it is that triggers these ego reactions? It almost seems as if just about Anything is capable of initiating ego's aggression… doesn't it? But is there something more deeply imbedded at the core… some common denominator that is the Root Cause of all egoistic behavior? I believe there is… I Really believe that it is a direct result of “Feeling a Lack of Love” or sometimes even more negatively powerful---just the “Fear of” Feeling a Lack of Love.

If you really think about it, the Ego (the Human Self) just wants to Love and be Loved.

Can't really say that I Blame it…
…can You?

If Only it Knew with the Certainty of a Spirit Filled Soul Child of God…
If Only it Knew how Deeply and Unconditionally it was Cherished by it's Infinite Parent…
If Only it Knew God Personally as a constant Friend and Companion and Guide…

…Perhaps it would not be so Unruly so often.

Take the time to Experience God's Love for you today and Every day. It is the Source from which all other Love Flows.

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
I pray that All may come to know Your Infinite and Unconditional Love… how much better would we then be prepared and willing to Love one Another.

Parent,

The Creator's Infinite Love to all of You,
Pastor Daniel
