If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

********************************************
Welcome by: Pastor Daniel
************************
Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

When I was a teen (late 60's & early 70's), the term “Righteous” was reserved for things like Girls, Bands, and Muscle Cars. It was then a fairly common expletive that was used rather interchangeably with the term “Awesome” to describe something when “Really, Really Good” just wasn't adequate. Quite frequently these terms were preceded by an exclamation amplifier such as “Truly” or “Totally.”
The term “Self Righteous” however, was most likely associated with (and followed, rather than preceded by), another type of “exclamation amplifier” typically questioning a persons parental genealogy.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #489, is True Righteousness…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Self Righteousness is an attitude entirely interconnected with the Ego self.

To be Self Righteous is to be Sanctimonious, Arrogant, Smug, Holier-than-thou, Egotistical. Self Righteousness is Imitation Righteousness… Fake Righteousness… False Righteousness. Self Righteousness is often used to dazzle the uninformed into believing a lie for purposes of selfish gain or unearned reputation or manipulative power over the innocent and unaware.

Self Righteousness appears rampant in today's society, most especially in the arena of politics and “so-called” religion… does it not?

Self Righteousness really Bothers me. Does it you? When I detect it, it makes me feel a need to add that “exclamation amplifier” I mentioned earlier (the one that follows rather than precedes <g>).

So… I was watching the “National News” yesterday and repeatedly I had this almost uncontrollable urge to exclaim, “Why you Self Righteous…” Afterward, feeling frustrated and discouraged about the state of society, I realized (with the help of a loved one), that I can do absolutely Nothing about Self Righteousness except try to avoid it in myself.

True Righteousness on the other hand, I can do something about… by doing my best to BE Righteous rather than trying to merely “appear” Righteous.

Anyway… that little episode turned out to be the initial inspiration for today's Sunday Service…

So what is True Righteousness?

Is it Beneficial?
Is it Desirable?
Is it even Attainable?

I believe yes.

Being Truly Righteous is being, Honorable – Respectable – Good – Decent – Just – Moral – Trustworthy.

Being Truly Righteous requires determination though, and dedication. It comes not without honest effort. Righteousness must be desired, craved, yearned for.

Being Truly Righteous also requires an Unselfishness of Intent and a Humbleness of Spirit.

True Righteousness inherently manifests Love and the desire to be in Service to others.

True Righteousness must evolve and grow through personal experience and practice and perseverance.

True Righteousness is never received as a gift, nor is it acquired through obedience to some external compulsory obligation. True Inner Righteousness must be Earned… Continually and by successive Personal Choices.

True Righteousness…

Ya Gotta Love It! Ya Gotta Want It!

Quotes
*******
(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 25:37-40)
Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.'

(From: John Foster Dulles )
The world will never have lasting peace so long as men reserve for war the finest human qualities. Peace, no less than war, requires idealism and self-sacrifice and a righteous and dynamic faith.

(From: Anthony J. D'Angelo, The College Blue Book)

Transcend political correctness and strive for human righteousness.

(From: Ham 4/3/2004 – the Nashville TeaM)
Gradually in your experience, you will find yourself given ever greater vision or conception of the truth, some bit of the true nature of reality. Be at peace, and yet do not cease to hunger after increased righteousness. You must allow yourselves the freedom to move ever toward a righteous nature through righteous action.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-103 Section-3)
The righteousness of any act must be measured by the motive; the highest forms of good are therefore unconscious. Jesus was never concerned with morals or ethics as such. He was wholly concerned with that inward and spiritual fellowship with God the Father which so certainly and directly manifests itself as outward and loving service for man. He taught that the religion of the kingdom is a genuine personal experience which no man can contain within himself; that the consciousness of being a member of the family of believers leads inevitably to the practice of the precepts of the family conduct, the service of one's brothers and sisters in the effort to enhance and enlarge the brotherhood.

(From: The RSV Bible - Isaiah 32:17)
And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust for ever.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-196 Section-3)
Some men's lives are too great and noble to descend to the low level of being merely successful. The animal must adapt itself to the environment, but the religious man transcends his environment and in this way escapes the limitations of the present material world through this insight of divine love. This concept of love generates in the soul of man that superanimal effort to find truth, beauty, and goodness; and when he does find them, he is glorified in their embrace; he is consumed with the desire to live them, to do righteousness.

(From: Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC)
The man who in view of gain thinks of righteousness; who in the view of danger is prepared to give up his life; and who does not forget an old agreement however far back it extends - such a man may be reckoned a complete man.

(From: Euripides (484 BC - 406 BC), Aegeus )
The company of just and righteous men is better than wealth and a rich estate.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 6:33)
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.

(From: Ham 4/3/2004 – the Nashville TeaM)
Hold on then to righteousness and do not pull away from it. Uphold the best you know and do this in all areas of life so that you can learn to respect yourselves and your actions completely.

The local bar was so sure its bartender was the strongest man around that they offered a standing $1000 bet. The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and hand the lemon to a patron. Anyone who could squeeze one more drop of juice out would win the money.

Many people had tried over time, including the professional wrestlers and bodybuilders, but nobody could do it. One day a scrawny little man came in, wearing a tie and a pair of pants hiked up past his belly button.  He said in a squeaky annoying voice, "I'd like to try the bet" Even the hillbilly chicks burst into laughter.

After the laughter had died down, the bartender said, "Ok," grabbed a lemon, and squeezed away. He then handed the wrinkled remains of the rind to the little man. But the crowd's laughter turned to total silence as the man clenched his fist around the lemon and six drops fell into the glass.

As the crowd cheered, the bartender paid the $1000, and asked the little man, "What do you do for a living? Are you a lumberjack, weight lifter, or what?"

The man replied, "I work for the IRS."

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #490, is Trust…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: Norman Douglas)

How hard it is, sometimes, to trust the evidence of one's senses! How reluctantly the mind consents to reality.

(From: Tyron Edwards)
Anxiety is the rust of life, destroying its brightness and weakening its power. A childlike and abiding trust in Providence is its best preventive and remedy.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-102 Section-8)
The highest evidence of the reality and efficacy of religion consists in the fact of human experience; namely, that man, naturally fearful and suspicious, innately endowed with a strong instinct of self-preservation and craving survival after death, is willing fully to trust the deepest interests of his present and future to the keeping and direction of that power and person designated by his faith as God. That is the one central truth of all religion. As to what that power or person requires of man in return for this watchcare and final salvation, no two religions agree; in fact, they all more or less disagree.

(From: Solon (638 BC - 559 BC)
Put more trust in nobility of character than in an oath.

(From: Frank Crane)
You may be deceived if you trust too much, but you will live in torment if you do not trust enough.

(From: Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC), Prometheus Bound)
For somehow this is tyranny's disease, to trust no friends.

(From: H. L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)
For it is mutual trust, even more than mutual interest that holds human associations together. Our friends seldom profit us but they make us feel safe...

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him.

(From: Peter Farquharson )
Relationships of trust depend on our willingness to look not only to our own interests, but also the interests of others.

(From: George Eliot (1819 - 1880)
No soul is desolate as long as there is a human being for whom it can feel trust and reverence.

(From: Robert Jordan, The Wheel of Time )
A man without trust is a man without life.

(From: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832), Faust)
As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live.

(From: Olga Ilyin)
It had only been my repeated experience that when you said to life calmly and firmly... 'I trust you; do what you must,' life had an uncanny way of responding to your need.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-2 Section-6)
In its true essence, religion is a faith-trust in the goodness of God. God could be great and absolute, somehow even intelligent and personal, in philosophy, but in religion God must also be moral; he must be good. Man might fear a great God, but he trusts and loves only a good God.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen.

(From: Shakti Gawain)
When I'm trusting and being myself... everything in my life reflects this by falling into place easily, often miraculously.

(From: Vicomte de Valmont, Les Liaisons Dangereuses )
What then have I done? What, except yield to a natural feeling, inspired by beauty, sanctioned by virtue and kept at all times within the bounds of respect. It's innocent expression prompted not by hope but by trust.

(From: Rita Mae Brown)
Creativity comes from trust. Trust your instincts.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #12)
The Master observes the world
but trusts his inner vision.
He allows things to come and go.
His heart is open as the sky.

(From: Sharon Salzberg, O Magazine, The Power of Intention, January 2004 )
Any ordinary favor we do for someone or any compassionate reaching out may seem to be going nowhere at first, but may be planting a seed we can't see right now. Sometimes we need to just do the best we can and then trust in an unfolding we can't design or ordain.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Every so often, someone will ask me where I get the ideas for these weekly Sunday Services. From Scriptures… From Books… From Quotes? Actually, no… not directly… not initially…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #491, is From Within…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Where does true Art come from?
        Where is it truly Appreciated?

Where does Music come from? (no… not the radio, or music store, or from on-line ;-)
        Where is it Experienced?

Where does Heroism or Courage come from?
        Where are they Recognized?

Where does Determination and Conviction come from?
        Where are they Felt?

Where does Goodness come from?
        Where is it Perceived?

Where does Personal Love come from?
        Where is it Cherished?

From Within Others? Of Course!
From Within Ourselves? Truly!

Then why do so many look everywhere else But within?

Yeah… it doesn't make any sense to Me Either.

(From: The KJV Bible - Luke 17:21)
Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-103 Section-7)
Logic is the technique of philosophy, its method of expression. Within the domain of true science, reason is always amenable to genuine logic; within the domain of true religion, faith is always logical from the basis of an inner viewpoint, even though such faith may appear to be quite unfounded from the inlooking viewpoint of the scientific approach. From outward, looking within, the universe may appear to be material; from within, looking out, the same universe appears to be wholly spiritual.

(From: Charles de Gaulle (1890 - 1970)
We may go to the moon, but that's not very far. The greatest distance we have to cover still lies within us.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Papers - Paper-133 Section-4)
“Know you not that the mystery of eternal salvation dwells within your own soul? Do you not know that the God of heaven has sent his spirit to live within you, and that this spirit will lead all truth-loving and God-serving mortals out of this life and through the portals of death up to the eternal heights of light where God waits to receive his children?”

(From: Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948)
The outward freedom that we shall attain will only be in exact proportion to the inward freedom to which we may have grown at a given moment. And if this is a correct view of freedom, our chief energy must be concentrated on achieving reform from within.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

(From: Epictetus (55 AD - 135 AD)
The good or ill of a man lies within his own will.

(From: Charlotte Bronte (1816 - 1855 )
Cheerfulness, it would appear, is a matter which depends fully as much on the state of things within, as on the state of things without and around us.

(From: Francois de La Rochefoucauld (1613 - 1680)
When we are unable to find tranquility within ourselves, it is useless to seek it elsewhere.

(From: George Sand (1804 - 1876)

Guard well within yourself that treasure, kindness. Know how to give without hesitation, how to lose without regret, how to acquire without meanness.

(From: Epictetus (55 AD - 135 AD), Discourses)
When you close your doors, and make darkness within, remember never to say that you are alone, for you are not alone; nay, God is within, and your genius is within.

(From: Thomas a Kempis (1380 - 1471), 1420)

First keep the peace within yourself, then you can also bring peace to others.

(From: Solonia 5/2/04 – the Faith Garden TeaM)
The Word of God is Love. The Enactment of The Word of God, is Service to your brothers and sisters. Truly if the Word of God is actively resident within your life, the Fruits of the Spirit are being produced in your life through a Service of Love.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-157 Section-2)
And when the feelings of service for your fellow men arise within your soul, do not stifle them; when the emotions of love for your neighbor well up within your heart, give expression to such urges of affection in intelligent ministry to the real needs of your fellows."

(From: Joseph Chilton Pearce)
We must accept that this creative pulse within us is God's creative pulse itself.

(From: Belle Livingstone)
I looked always outside of myself to see what I could make the world give me instead of looking within myself to see what was there.

(From: Anna Freud (1895 - 1982)
I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence, but it comes from within. It is there all the time.

(From: Tina Turner (1938 - ), O Magazine, December 2003 )
The real power behind whatever success I have now was something I found within myself - something that's in all of us, I think, a little piece of God just waiting to be discovered.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-3 Section-1)
The creature not only exists in God, but God also lives in the creature. "We know we dwell in him because he lives in us; he has given us his spirit. This gift from the Paradise Father is man's inseparable companion." "He is the ever-present and all-pervading God." "The spirit of the everlasting Father is concealed in the mind of every mortal child." "Man goes forth searching for a friend while that very friend lives within his own heart." Anything that has real and lasting value is always a gift from within.

(From: Sheldon Kopp)
All of the significant battles are waged within the self.

Spirit growth springs from within the evolving soul.

(From: Galileo Galilei (1564 - 1642)
You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself.

(From: Chuang-tzu (369 BC - 286 BC), On Tolerance)
Cherish that which is within you, and shut off that which is without.

(From: Helen Keller (1880 - 1968)
The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt within the heart.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-148 Section-6)
While the speech of God spoken from the whirlwind was a majestic concept for the day of its utterance, you have already learned that the Father does not thus reveal himself, but rather that he speaks within the human heart as a still, small voice, saying, `This is the way; walk therein.' Do you not comprehend that God dwells within you, that he has become what you are that he may make you what he is!"

(From: Jean Houston )
We all have the extraordinary coded within us, waiting to be released.

(From: Louis L'Amour (1908 - 1988)

A woman goes to the doctor for her yearly physical. The nurse starts with certain basic items:

"How much do you weigh?" the nurse asks.
“115,” she says.
The nurse puts her on the scale and it turns out her weight is 140.

The nurse asks, "Your height?"
"5 foot 8," she says.
The nurse checks and sees that she only measures 5' 5".

The nurse then takes her blood pressure and tells the woman it is very high.

"Of course it's high!" the woman screams, "When I came in here I was tall and slender! Now I'm short and fat!"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #492, is “Dedication/Devotion to a Cause…

Quotes

(From: Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948)
I am prepared to die, but there is no cause for which I am prepared to kill.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-160 Section-1)
Prejudice blinds the soul to the recognition of truth, and prejudice can be removed only by the sincere devotion of the soul to the adoration of a cause that is all-embracing and all-inclusive of one's fellow men. Prejudice is inseparably linked to selfishness. Prejudice can be eliminated only by the abandonment of self-seeking and by substituting therefor the quest of the satisfaction of the service of a cause that is not only greater than self, but one that is even greater than all humanity…

(From: Solon (638 BC - 559 BC)
The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just.

(From: Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797)
A man who works beyond the surface of things, though he may be wrong himself, yet he clears the way for others and may make even his errors subservient to the cause of truth.

(From: Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)
The individual must not merely wait and criticize, he must defend the cause the best he can. The fate of the world will be such as the world deserves.

(From: Edward Kennedy )
The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-159 Section-3)
Never should a righteous cause be promoted by force; spiritual victories can be won only by spiritual power.

(From: Vince Lombardi (1913 - 1970)
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-- victorious.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
“I Have a Cause that will Change the World! No, Really! You just Gotta Listen… I Know it will Work… it's what Everybody's been Waiting for! If Only Everybody will…”

How many times have you heard That? How many times have you Said that? How many times have you Thought that?

Never?
Once…
Twice…
Three times?
WAY more times than I could possibly Remember?

For all to many of our brothers and sisters of this world, basic human survival is of necessity… the Only “Cause” that can have any tangible meaning. For them, it takes Dedication and Devotion just to survive from one week to the next, from one Day to the next. The Survival of themselves and their Family is their “Cause” and a Worthy one it is Indeed! And yet… who of them hasn't a Higher “Cause” that they Hunger for? Something to Hope for, something to Believe in when the overwhelming slavery to drudgery subsides if only momentarily?
What of they to whom Basic Survival is only a Struggle (to a greater or lesser degree), not an Imperative? This segment of the population includes you and I and pretty much everyone else regardless of Income, Status, Sex, Age, Persuasion… What of Our “Causes”?

Inevitably there will be a few who could not care Less about a “Cause” ahead of their own personal pleasure. How truly Sad that must be!

Some are unknowing Slaves to Convention. Their Higher “Cause” (beyond the Noble “Cause” of family that is…), is whatever their various “Authorities” tell them it is. Fear (real, imagined, or artificially imposed) dominates and dictates a fair percentage of their personal choices. Whatever their government or church says is pretty much “Cause” enough for them.

Been there… done that… didn't much Like it… though it gave the impression of being somewhat adequate at the time (safe anyway). I guess it Was a “Stepping Stone” of a sort though…

The Vast Majority are at least Relatively comfortable there it seems, staying there throughout their entire human existence… an attractive, but temporary, outside “Cause” here and there on occasion perhaps, “for good measure” as the mood dictates…

Then there are the “Seekers” who step out… want More… Need more… Searching for a Greater “Cause” to satisfy the inner Yearning that they feel. Every “Cause” is (or seems at first), worth investigating, perhaps pursuing… occasionally getting “Burned” or “Taken” but… it's a part of learning Wisdom, Right? Still Seeking. Seeking for…

“I Have a Cause that will Change the World! No, Really! You just Gotta Listen to me… I Know it will Work… it's what Everybody's been Waiting for! If Only Everybody will…”

“What? You have it Too?”
“Oh… but that's not 'it' exactly… not quite the Same as Mine.”
“Listen, mine worked for Me… it Must work for Everyone!”
“What? You Will? OK, Here it Is…”

“What do you Mean you tried that already and it didn't work for you… it Has to… maybe you didn't Do it right…”

“Sure I'm glad that Yours worked for you, but…”

Eventually it may become possible to realize that “Your Cause” is every bit as Real… as Valuable… as Important… as Essential to the Growth of the Whole… as Mine is.

Go Figure, Huh? Who'd of Thought?

(From: Aleister Crowley)
It is the mark of the untrained mind to take its own processes as valid for all men, and its own judgments for absolute truth.

I Have a Cause that will Change the World! Really! I Know it will Work… It's what I've Waited for! …what I've always been Searching for! If Only 'I' will…

*******************************************
