President Calvin Coolidge once invited friends from his hometown to dine at the White House. Worried about their table manners, the guests decided to do everything that Coolidge did. This strategy succeeded, until coffee was served. The president poured his coffee into the saucer. The guests did the same. Coolidge added sugar and cream. His guests did, too. Then Coolidge bent over and put his saucer on the floor for the cat.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Portions of Today's Service have been shared previously

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #541, is: Your Religion…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
What is it that most attracts you toward the One whom you recognize as your Creator ?

What is Your religion? Do you see it as: a place to go or as something to be... as an idea or as an ideal... as a responsibility or as a wholehearted desire... as insurance against eternal suffering or as a means of attaining everlasting happiness... as an obligation or as a Supreme privilege? Is your life motivated more by: the fear of punishment or by the lure of reward, the resistance of evil or by an inner yearning for Good, an escape from a devil or by an insatiable quest for God?

As a young child in Parochial School, I had a lot of ideas about religion. I thought that I had to go to church to get it and that it was my responsibility, my obligation to do so. I was afraid that if I didn't go to church... or say all the right words and say them the "right" way, that I was destined for hell... an eternity of demonic torture and suffering. I believed that God was just waiting "up there" with a score sheet ready to catch me doing something wrong so He could punish me. And the Devil... why, he was just looking and waiting for every single opportunity he could find to "make" me do bad things against my will.
All of these things were sufficient to keep me as a slave to theology and doctrine until I grew up, and they kept me feeding the collection basket each week. In retrospect, I can now realize that they DID keep me on a religious path of sorts, so I can't really deny that they had a certain measure of value for that time in my life. I tried to be good... I wanted to be... but I felt destined for failure. It all seemed so unjust to me, but who was I to question the "religious" teachers? Why... they talked to God personally and I was but an evil sinner… They Told me so.

One day as a young adult I got extremely angry at God and yelled at Him. "Here I want to be good, and You are making it a next to impossible task for me." I was furious at the injustice of it all. "What do You want from me God? I demand an answer!" I sat there impudently and waited. "I'm not going anywhere 'till You tell me, so You might as well get started!" I said. After a few moments which seemed like an eternity, my rage began to subside and I calmed down. Then something happened. I "felt" God smile at me. It wasn't a vengeful smile at all but a Loving one like my parents gave me. I felt like I was being held and embraced in loving arms. I began to cry and then laugh for joy. I began at that moment to recognize God as a Parent rather than a scorekeeper... as a guide rather than a jailer... I began to Love rather than fear God. I began growing up that day.

I started to realize that the most important thing wasn't so much what I felt God wanted me to do, as what God wanted me to BE. Doing is the Result of Being... not the other way around. I realized that I wasn't being tested to see how badly I had failed, but to see how much I had learned. Being good was no longer the obligation of a slave but the supreme privilege of a child of God. I stopped looking over my shoulder while running frantically from the devil, all the time tripping and falling over the stones in my path... and began running gleefully towards the Loving open arms of my Divine Parent, skipping and jumping over the rocks... going around the obstacles rather than blindly crashing into them. And when I do stumble and fall down, my Parent is always there to help me up and to brush off the dirt and to soothe my ow-ies.

Whatever ideas or beliefs bring you closer to God, follow them. If it is Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Shamanism, Wicca, the Tao... if it's Islam, or Bahai, or Confucius or Mysticism... The Urantia Papers, the Bible, the Koran, the Torah, the Baghavad Gita, the Book of Mormon or whatever calls to your Soul... Live The Truth That You Have Learned, and God will show you more. Be willing to grow in your understanding of the Creator, and you will. "Seek, and you shall find."

With Religion it is Especially True that…
Actions speak louder than words.

Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-99 Section-5)
Just as certainly as men share their religious beliefs, they create a religious group of some sort which eventually creates common goals. Someday religionists will get together and actually effect co-operation on the basis of unity of ideals and purposes rather than attempting to do so on the basis of psychological opinions and theological beliefs. Goals rather than creeds should unify religionists. Since true religion is a matter of personal spiritual experience, it is inevitable that each individual religionist must have his own and personal interpretation of the realization of that spiritual experience. Let the term "faith" stand for the individual's relation to God rather than for the creedal formulation of what some group of mortals have been able to agree upon as a common religious attitude.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-103 Section-1)
The unity of religious experience among a social or racial group derives from the identical nature of the God fragment indwelling the individual. It is this divine in man that gives origin to his unselfish interest in the welfare of other men. But since personality is unique--no two mortals being alike--it inevitably follows that no two human beings can similarly interpret the leadings and urges of the spirit of divinity which lives within their minds. A group of mortals can experience spiritual unity, but they can never attain philosophic uniformity. And this diversity of the interpretation of religious thought and experience is shown by the fact that twentieth-century theologians and philosophers have formulated upward of five hundred different definitions of religion. In reality, every human being defines religion in the terms of his own experiential interpretation of the divine impulses emanating from the God spirit that indwells him, and therefore must such an interpretation be unique and wholly different from the religious philosophy of all other human beings.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-160 Section-5)
If something has become a religion in your experience, it is self-evident that you already have become an active evangel of that religion since you deem the supreme concept of your religion as being worthy of the worship of all mankind, all universe intelligences. If you are not a positive and missionary evangel of your religion, you are self-deceived in that what you call a religion is only a traditional belief or a mere system of intellectual philosophy. If your religion is a spiritual experience, your object of worship must be the universal spirit reality and ideal of all your spiritualized concepts.

I was shopping at Wal-Mart and noticed a little old lady following me around.

I stopped, she stopped. Furthermore she kept staring at me.

She finally overtook me at the checkout, and she turned to me and said, "I hope I haven't made you feel ill at ease;   it's just that you look so much like my late son."

I answered, "That's okay."

"I know it's silly, but if you'd call out 'Good bye, Mom,' as I leave the store, it would make me feel so happy."

She then went through the checkout, and as she was on her way out of the store, I called out, "Goodbye, Mom."

The little old lady waved, and smiled back at me.

Pleased that I had brought a little sunshine into someone's day, I went to pay for my groceries.

"That comes to $121.85," said the clerk.
"How come so much!? I only bought 5 items.."

The clerk replied,    "Yeah, but your Mother said  you'd be paying for her things, too."

Quotes
*******
(From: Viktor Frankl, Man's Search For Meaning)
Don't aim at success - the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue... as the unintended side-effect of one's personal dedication to a course greater than oneself.

(From: the Teachers 2/24/93 – the Kona, HI TeaM)
Nothing is ever achieved, nothing comes into being, there is no creation of anything whatsoever, without deliberate, determined and dedicated action. Think upon this. Yes, thinking and examining are semi-actions which bring understanding. These help you see the wisdom therein contained. Yet, when you have completed the thinking process, even that will have been for naught if you do not ACT upon your new knowledge.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-130 Section-6)
"This day, my son, you are to be reborn, re-established as a man of faith, courage, and devoted service to man, for God's sake. And when you become so readjusted to life within yourself, you become likewise readjusted to the universe; you have been born again--born of the spirit--and henceforth will your whole life become one of victorious accomplishment. Trouble will invigorate you; disappointment will spur you on; difficulties will challenge you; and obstacles will stimulate you. Arise, young man! Say farewell to the life of cringing fear and fleeing cowardice. Hasten back to duty and live your life in the flesh as a son of God, a mortal dedicated to the ennobling service of man on earth and destined to the superb and eternal service of God in eternity."

(From: Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 - 1968), "Strength to Love")
The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-99 Section-5)
Modern men have thought out many creeds and created many tests of religious faith. Future religionists must live out their religion, dedicate themselves to the wholehearted service of the brotherhood of man. It is high time that man had a religious experience so personal and so sublime that it could be realized and expressed only by "feelings that lie too deep for words."

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-132 Section-7)
That which the enlightened and reflective human imagination of spiritual teaching and leading wholeheartedly and unselfishly wants to do and be, becomes measurably creative in accordance with the degree of mortal dedication to the divine doing of the Father's will. When man goes in partnership with God, great things may, and do, happen.

(From: Dr. Thomas Dooley)
Dedicate some of your life to others. Your dedication will not be a sacrifice. It will be an exhilarating experience because it is an intense effort applied toward a meaningful end.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-165 Section-5)
You have dedicated your lives to the ministry of the kingdom; therefore be not anxious or worried about the things of the temporal life, what you shall eat, nor yet for your body, what you shall wear. The welfare of the soul is more than food and drink; the progress in the spirit is far above the need of raiment.

(From: Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982), The Fountianhead)
Morality is judgment to distinguish right and wrong, vision to see the truth, courage to act upon it, dedication to that which is good, and integrity to stand by it at any price.

Personal Dedication

It is not nearly so much about what one thinks or believes or says…

When we are tempted to magnify our self-importance, if we stop to contemplate the infinity of the greatness and grandeur of our Makers, our own self-glorification becomes sublimely ridiculous, even verging on the humorous. One of the functions of humor is to help all of us take ourselves less seriously. Humor is the divine antidote for exaltation of ego.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, # 543, is Importance…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
I was talking to God last night… wondering what today's Sunday Service should be about and… it was suggested that I tell you that, “There is not another created being in the vast Universe of Universes that is more important than You!”

“Why would You want me to tell them that?” I asked.

“Because it is the Truth.” I was told.

So I came back with, “But there are So Many that have done such incredible and memorable things in their lives… and the Angels who you created much higher than us mortals… surely They are more important.”

And God said, “No. They are equally As important, but they are not more important.”

“I'm not going to be able to make them believe That.” I said.

Whereupon I was told, “I did not Ask you to make them believe it. I'll take care of that. I only asked you to Tell them.”

“Sure, but…”

“Look. I never have, nor will I Ever, create another exactly like them… or like you. Every single one of My children are unique and one of a kind,” said God. “Each has a significant and irreplaceable part to contribute to the whole of My Creation. No one else can ever Be You. It is the same with All of My Children. That is Supremely Important to remember… All are Equally Important to Me.”

“Is that True,” I asked?

“You don't think I would Lie, do you?”

“Well, no,” I said.

“So Tell them then.”

“Ok… if You say so.”

“I Do.” Was the last I heard.

Ok, so here it is then…

“There is not another created being in the vast Universe of Universes that is more important than You!”

Quotes
*******
(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Papers - Paper-155 Section-6)
“Divine truth must not be discounted because the channel of its bestowal is apparently human. Many of your brethren have minds which accept the theory of God while they spiritually fail to realize the presence of God. And that is just the reason why I have so often taught you that the kingdom of heaven can best be realized by acquiring the spiritual attitude of a sincere child. It is not the mental immaturity of the child that I commend to you but rather the spiritual simplicity of such an easy-believing and fully-trusting little one. It is not so important that you should know about the fact of God as that you should increasingly grow in the ability to feel the presence of God.”

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #44)
Fame or integrity: which is more important?
Money or happiness: which is more valuable?
Success of failure: which is more destructive?

If you look to others for fulfillment,
you will never truly be fulfilled.
If your happiness depends on money,
you will never be happy with yourself.

Be content with what you have;
rejoice in the way things are.
When you realize there is nothing lacking,
the whole world belongs to you.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-111 Section-1)
What you are today is not so important as what you are becoming day by day and in eternity.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-48 Section-6)
You can do important work if you do not become self-important; you can do several things as easily as one if you leave yourself out. Variety is restful; monotony is what wears and exhausts.

(From: Thomas H. Huxley (1825 - 1895)
It is not who is right, but what is right, that is of importance.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-147 Section-5)
Said Jesus: "My children, if there exists a true and living connection between the child and the Father, the child is certain to progress continuously toward the Father's ideals. True, the child may at first make slow progress, but the progress is none the less sure. The important thing is not the rapidity of your progress but rather its certainty. Your actual achievement is not so important as the fact that the direction of your progress is Godward. What you are becoming day by day is of infinitely more importance than what you are today.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-4)
It is not so important to love all men today as it is that each day you learn to love one more human being. If each day or each week you achieve an understanding of one more of your fellows, and if this is the limit of your ability, then you are certainly socializing and truly spiritualizing your personality. Love is infectious, and when human devotion is intelligent and wise, love is more catching than hate. But only genuine and unselfish love is truly contagious. If each mortal could only become a focus of dynamic affection, this benign virus of love would soon pervade the sentimental emotion-stream of humanity to such an extent that all civilization would be encompassed by love, and that would be the realization of the brotherhood of man.

(From: Henry Ford (1863 - 1947)
Every new life is a new thing under the sun; there has never been anything just like it before, never will be again. A young man ought to get that idea about himself; he should look for the single spark of individuality that makes him different from other folks, and develop that for all he is worth. Society and schools may try to iron it out of him; their tendency is to put it all in the same mold, but I say don't let that spark be lost; it is your only real claim to importance.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

I've done many Services here on Truth and many on Love, but I don't think I have ever done one before on Truth And Love.
Today I decided to put the two together (as if they were ever really separated ;-)

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #544, is: Truth, “For the Love of God…

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-159 Section-4)
“…nothing which human nature has touched can be regarded as infallible. Through the mind of man divine truth may indeed shine forth, but always of relative purity and partial divinity. The creature may crave infallibility, but only the Creators possess it.”

(From: Whitney Young (1921 - 1971)
The truth is that there is nothing noble in being superior to somebody else. The only real nobility is in being superior to your former self.

(From: Rene Descartes (1596 - 1650)
If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.

(From: The ASB Bible - John 3:21)
"But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God."

(From: Isaac Newton (1642 - 1727)
I do not know what I may appear to the world; but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-132 Section-2)
Goodness is living, relative, always progressing, invariably a personal experience, and everlastingly correlated with the discernment of truth and beauty.

(From: Galileo Galilei (1564 - 1642)
All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.

(From: Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948)

In the attitude of silence the soul finds the path in a clearer light, and what is elusive and deceptive resolves itself into crystal clearness. Our life is a long and arduous quest after Truth.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-2 Section-7)
The religious challenge of this age is to those farseeing and forward-looking men and women of spiritual insight who will dare to construct a new and appealing philosophy of living out of the enlarged and exquisitely integrated modern concepts of cosmic truth, universe beauty, and divine goodness. Such a new and righteous vision of morality will attract all that is good in the mind of man and challenge that which is best in the human soul. Truth, beauty, and goodness are divine realities, and as man ascends the scale of spiritual living, these supreme qualities of the Eternal become increasingly co-ordinated and unified in God, who is love.

(From: Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815 - 1902), 1890)
The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls.

(From: Tyron Edwards)
The truth is more important than the facts.

(From: Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 - 1968)
I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-195 Section-5)
In religion, Jesus advocated and followed the method of experience, even as modern science pursues the technique of experiment. We find God through the leadings of spiritual insight, but we approach this insight of the soul through the love of the beautiful, the pursuit of truth, loyalty to duty, and the worship of divine goodness. But of all these values, love is the true guide to real insight.

(From: Blaise Pascal (1623 - 1662)
We know truth, not only by reason, but also by the heart.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-79 Section-8)
Truth is relative and expanding; it lives always in the present, achieving new expression in each generation of men--even in each human life.

(From: Kahlil Gibran (1883 - 1931)
Say not, 'I have found the truth,' but rather, 'I have found a truth.'

(From: Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)
Truth is what stands the test of experience.

(From: Quintus Septimius Tertullianus (160 AD - 230 AD)
Truth persuades by teaching, but does not teach by persuading.

(From: A Friend - Author Unknown)
TRUTH *
A Jewel so precious it must be guarded,
So rare it must be preserved,
So essential it must be dispersed,
So indispensable it is The Path to God, for
Truth with love is God in Action.

(From: The ASB Bible - John 8:32 )
“…and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

The Sermon
***********
When I was a kid growing up, I remember hearing the phrase, “Oh, for the Love of God!” a lot. In my family, it usually came forth with a certain element of pleasant surprise and wonder associated with it. My mom and dad seemed to me to say it rather frequently. Like if my mom couldn't find something, and was looking and searching all over for it, if I heard, “Oh, for the Love of God!” then I knew she had found it. Then would follow something like, “I Never would have looked There!” or, “I can't believe it was right there in front of me all the time!” Mom would always openly pray for help with finding things, practically in the very moment she realized that they were missing. She was so consistent about it that I could only perceive with my young mind that it was consistently Effective for her. She'd pretty much always find what she was looking for… sooner or later. Praying for… and Finding.

I'm in my 50's and Mom and dad have both graduated to the next level of existence now. Their “Praying for… and Finding” thing has always stuck with me. But it has always, for me, been Most Effective when I use it to find Truth. Pray for it… Find it… sooner or later… and then… “Oh, for the Love of God!” and “I Never would have looked There!” or, “I can't believe it was right there in front of me all the time!” SurPrise!

I think that whenever we find that piece of significant Truth we are truly looking for, it is always Because of “the Love of God” that we find it… even though we may not be fully, or even partially aware of it at the time.

I think that Love and Truth go hand in hand really…
What Good does Truth do for me without Love?
What Good does Love do for me without Truth?

“Oh, for the Love of God… it was right there in front of me all the time!”

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
Thank You for Truth and Love. When I add to them Faith, the Potentials are truly Unlimited.

You ALL are Within the Infinitely Loving Embrace of our Universal
Parent,

The Creator's Infinite Love to all of You,
Pastor Daniel
