Welcome by: Pastor Daniel

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Jill and I were watching a TV show last Monday and one particular line caused us both to want to write it down…

(From: the TV show “24” – 4/26/2010)
Some people are so invested in their fear and hatred that peace is the most threatening thing they can imagine.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #706, is Inner Peace…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Things that prevent or destroy Inner Peace:

fear
hatred
judgment
prejudice
control
revenge
injustice
unfairness
discrimination
intolerance
unfairness
etc…
…but especially fear because it is both the cause and effect of all the others.

Things that Promote and Sustain and Nourish Inner Peace:

Love
Truth
Beauty
Goodness
Friendship
Service
Honesty
Respect
Acceptance
Forgiveness
Self Control
Stillness
Meditation
Knowing the Love of God
…did I mention Love?

OK… so you got fear and you got Love…
The more you unconditionally Trust the Care of your Divine Parent, the less fear you experience.
Love fills all voids that fear leaves at it's departure. Trust that God Loves you.

Love ~ Peace.
Fear ~ no peace.

You choose…

Quotes
*******
(From:
Jawaharlal Nehru (1889 - 1964)

Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #16)
Empty your mind of all thoughts.
Let your heart be at peace.
Watch the turmoil of beings,
but contemplate their return.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 15:13)
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

(From: C. S. Lewis (1898 – 1963)
God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-6)
One of the most amazing earmarks of religious living is that dynamic and sublime peace, that peace which passes all human understanding, that cosmic poise which betokens the absence of all doubt and turmoil. Such levels of spiritual stability are immune to disappointment.

(From: Henry Miller (1891 - 1980)
Living apart and at peace with myself, I came to realize more vividly the meaning of the doctrine of acceptance. To refrain from giving advice, to refrain from meddling in the affairs of others, to refrain, even though the motives be the highest, from tampering with another's way of life - so simple, yet so difficult for an active spirit.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #52)
If you close your mind in judgments
and traffic with desires,
your heart will be troubled.
If you keep your mind from judging
and aren't led by the senses,
your heart will find peace.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 8:6)
To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

(From: Peter McWilliams, Life 101, 1991)
If you want peace, stop fighting. If you want peace of mind, stop fighting with your thoughts.

(From: Thomas a Kempis (1380 - 1471)
First keep the peace within yourself, then you can also bring peace to others.

(From:
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)

Nothing can bring you peace but yourself.

(From: John Lennon (1940 - 1980)
All we are saying is give peace a chance.

(From: William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616)
I feel within me a peace above all earthly dignities, a still and quiet conscience.

(From: Seneca (5 BC - 65 AD)
Let tears flow of their own accord: their flowing is not inconsistent with inward peace and harmony.

(From: Oprah Winfrey, O Magazine)
I define joy as a sustained sense of well-being and internal peace - a connection to what matters.

(From: Catherine de Hueck Doherty)
Acquire inner peace and a multitude will find their salvation near you.

(From: Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948)
There is no path to peace. Peace is the path.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-157 Section-2)
And there can be no peace in the heart or progress in the mind unless you fall wholeheartedly in love with truth, the ideals of eternal realities.

(From: Dalai Lama, (in exile) Associated Press, 5/14/01)
World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not just the absence of violence but the manifestation of human compassion.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-131 Section-3)
"Cheerfulness and gladness are the rewards of deeds well done and to the glory of the Immortal. No man can rob you of the liberty of your own mind. When the faith of your religion has emancipated your heart, when the mind, like a mountain, is settled and immovable, then shall the peace of the soul flow tranquilly like a river of waters.

(From: Martin Luther King, Jr.)
We must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal we seek, but it is a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 12:18 )
If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.

(From: Helen Hayes (1900 - 1993)
My mother drew a distinction between achievement and success. She said that 'achievement is the knowledge that you have studied and worked hard and done the best that is in you. Success is being praised by others, and that's nice, too, but not as important or satisfying. Always aim for achievement and forget about success.'

The most important thing she'd learned over the years was that there was no way to be a perfect mother and a million ways to be a good one.

Quotes
*******
(From: Ham 7/13/97 – the Nashville TeaM)

The Father desires to approach his children, he can reveal himself to you, as a person and this is the ultimate experience of God to understand, to know him, as a personal friend. Many humans deal with God as an abstraction, as an hypothesis. But, the understanding that you need to achieve is that God is your personal friend. When you undertake to pray, think not that the Father is far away and that your prayers will fall short of his ear. He is the closest friend you will ever have. He is a constant presence within you, whether or not you open your heart and your mind to his presence. He is the supreme upholder, unifier and creator of all the vast universes, and yet at the same time, he is your own personal best friend.

When you are resolved to know God, and have opened your mind and your heart to his presence, you will know him as infinite gentleness, and infinite strength. It will occur to you that you can partake of his being at all times, in all circumstances, in each moment of every day. You will know the meaning of a door that has been opened which no man can shut. Indeed, the truth will be upon you and you will have no doubts, no nagging feeling that something doesn't fit, no worry that you placed your hopes and you dreams in something that may not be real. All that is washed away.

(From: Hugh Blair)
True gentleness is founded on a sense of what we owe to him who made us and to the common nature which we all share. It arises from reflection on our own failings and wants, and from just views of the condition and duty of man. It is native feeling heightened and improved by principle.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-34 Section-6)
The consciousness of the spirit domination of a human life is presently attended by an increasing exhibition of the characteristics of the Spirit in the life reactions of such a spirit-led mortal, “for the fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance.” Such spirit-guided and divinely illuminated mortals, while they yet tread the lowly paths of toil and in human faithfulness perform the duties of their earthly assignments, have already begun to discern the lights of eternal life as they glimmer on the faraway shores of another world; already have they begun to comprehend the reality of that inspiring and comforting truth, “The kingdom of God is not meat and drink but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.” And throughout every trial and in the presence of every hardship, spirit-born souls are sustained by that hope which transcends all fear because the love of God is shed abroad in all hearts by the presence of the divine Spirit.

(From: The RSV Bible - Galatians 5:22-23)
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things, there is no law.

(From: Homer (800 BC - 700 BC)
Do thou restrain the haughty spirit in thy breast, for better far is gentle courtesy.

(From: Saint Francis de Sales (1567 - 1622)
When you encounter difficulties and contradictions, do not try to break them, but bend them with gentleness and time.

(From: Francois de Fenelon (1651 - 1715)
It is only imperfection that complains of what is imperfect. The more perfect we are, the more gentle and quiet we become toward the defects of others.

(From: Leo Rosten (1908 -)
I learned that it is the weak who are cruel, and that gentleness is to be expected only from the strong.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-140 Section-6)
And Jesus answered: “You shall return good for evil. My messengers must not strive with men, but be gentle toward all. Measure for measure shall not be your rule. The rulers of men may have such laws, but not so in the kingdom; mercy always shall determine your judgments and love your conduct.

(From: Saint Francis de Sales (1567 - 1622)
Nothing is so strong as gentleness. Nothing so gentle as real strength.

The Sermon
***********
True Gentleness is the evidence of Inner Strength, Self Confidence, Wholehearted Respect and most especially, of an Active Personal Connection with the Divine Parent.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

I don't think I have ever used this as a specific topic for a Sunday Service before…

…and if I have, it was not in this particular way…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #709, is Results…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-2 Section-7)
Truth is coherent, beauty attractive, goodness stabilizing. And when these values of that which is real are co-ordinated in personality experience, the result is a high order of love conditioned by wisdom and qualified by loyalty.

(From: Sidney Madwed)
What we continually think about eventually will manifest in our lives. Unfortunately most of us are completely unaware of this fact and we do not monitor our thoughts with the care needed so that we can create in our lives the results we say we want.

(From: Steve Jobs (1955 -)
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

(From: Sidney Madwed)
The first order of business of anyone who wants to enjoy success in all areas of his or her life is to take charge of the internal dialogue they have and only think, say and behave in a manner consistent with the results they truly desire.

(From: The Book of Runes - #23 - Standstill / That Which Impedes / Ice)
Submit and be still, for what you are experiencing is not necessarily the result of your actions or habits, but of the conditions of the time against which you can do nothing. What has been full must empty; what has increased must decrease. This is the way of Heaven and Earth. To surrender is to display courage and wisdom.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-101 Section-1)
The experience of religion eventually results in the certain consciousness of God and in the undoubted assurance of the survival of the believing personality.
Thus it may be seen that religious longings and spiritual urges are not of such a nature as would merely lead men to want to believe in God, but rather are they of such nature and power that men are profoundly impressed with the conviction that they ought to believe in God.

(From: Alfred A. Montapert)
In life, the first thing you must do is decide what you really want. Weigh the costs and the results. Are the results worthy of the costs? Then make up your mind completely and go after your goal with all your might.

(From: Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955), quoted in New York Times, March 19, 1940)
Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices, but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence and fulfills the duty to express the results of his thought in clear form.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #55)
The Master's power is like this.
He lets all things come and go
effortlessly, without desire.
He never expects results;
thus he is never disappointed.
He is never disappointed;
thus his spirit never grows old.

(From: Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965)
However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.

(From: Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC)
Advice is judged by results, not by intentions.

(From: Benjamin Disraeli (1804 - 1881)
Self-knowledge is the property of that man whose passions have their full play, but who ponders over their results.

(From: Susan Laurson Willig)
Limited expectations yield only limited results.

(From: Willie Nelson)
Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you'll start having positive results.

(From: The RSV Bible – Isaia 32:17)
And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever.

(From: John Quincy Adams (1767 - 1848)
Duty is ours, results are God's.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-111 Section-1)
And it is not so much what mind comprehends as what mind desires to comprehend that insures survival; it is not so much what mind is like as what mind is striving to be like that constitutes spirit identification. It is not so much that man is conscious of God as that man yearns for God that results in universe ascension. What you are today is not so important as what you are becoming day by day and in eternity.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
The Results we desire are not always the Results we acquire…
To achieve the Results for which we yearn, it is Wisdom truly that we require.

Consequences are relatively immediate.
Results are more long term.

Consequences are indeed Results…
…but Results may be far more than simple consequences.

Consequences may be Joyful or they may be Painful.
Results can Enhance the Joyful… Results can Transcend the painful.

Awareness of consequences can produce more pleasurable Results.
Ignoring consequences will most often generate unfavorable Results.

Results are not static… they do not stand still…
Results continually adjust… they ever evolve.

Ego must grapple with consequences…
Results are the province of Soul.

Does your personal religion---not what you believe but rather, what you live---provide you with more consequences, or with more Results?

Knowing God is a Result of Personally Experiencing God…
God is the Cause, Love is the Result.

*******************************************
The Prayer

Dear God,
You are the ultimate Result that I crave. Guide me in choosing wisely those experiences that will lead me ever toward that goal.

Quotes
*******
(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-155 Section-6)
I have called upon you to be born again, to be born of the spirit. I have called you out of the darkness of authority and the lethargy of tradition into the transcendent light of the realization of the possibility of making for yourselves the greatest discovery possible for the human soul to make--the supernal experience of finding God for yourself, in yourself, and of yourself, and of doing all this as a fact in your own personal experience. And so may you pass from death to life, from the authority of tradition to the experience of knowing God; thus will you pass from darkness to light, from a racial faith inherited to a personal faith achieved by actual experience; and thereby will you progress from a theology of mind handed down by your ancestors to a true religion of spirit which shall be built up in your souls as an eternal endowment.

(From: The ASB Bible - Matthew 5:14-16)
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;
"nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

(From: The Book of Runes - #4 - Separation / Retreat / Inheritance - reversed)
This is not a time to be bound by old conditioning, old authority. Consider not only what will benefit you, but what will benefit others, and act according to the Light you possess now in your life. Because you may be called upon to undertake a radical departure from old ways, total honesty is required. Otherwise, through negligence or refusal to see clearly, you may cause pain to others and damage to yourself.
Adaptability and skillful means are the methods to cultivate at this time. Yet, you must wait for the universe to act.

(From: Buddha (563 BC - 483 BC)
To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue.

(From: Henry George (1839 - 1897)
Let no man imagine that he has no influence. Whoever he may be, and wherever he may be placed, the man who thinks becomes a light and a power.

(From: Colby Dorr Dam)
Each person has an ideal, a hope, a dream which represents the soul. We must give to it the warmth of love, the light of understanding and the essence of encouragement.

(From: Elisabeth Kubler-Ross)
People are like stained glass windows, they sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when darkness sets in, their true beauty is only seen if there is a light within.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #10)
Can you coax your mind from its wandering
and keep to the original oneness?
Can you let your body become
supple as a newborn child's?
Can you cleanse your inner vision
until you see nothing but the light?
Can you love people and lead them
without imposing your will?
Can you deal with the most vital matters
by letting events take their course?
Can you step back from you own mind
and thus understand all things?

Giving birth and nourishing,
having without possessing,
acting with no expectations,
leading and not trying to control:
this is the supreme virtue.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-149 Section-6)
"Your forebears feared God because he was mighty and mysterious. You shall adore him because he is magnificent in love, plenteous in mercy, and glorious in truth. The power of God engenders fear in the heart of man, but the nobility and righteousness of his personality beget reverence, love, and willing worship. A dutiful and affectionate son does not fear or dread even a mighty and noble father. I have come into the world to put love in the place of fear, joy in the place of sorrow, confidence in the place of dread, loving service and appreciative worship in the place of slavish bondage and meaningless ceremonies. But it is still true of those who sit in darkness that `the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.' But when the light has more fully come, the sons of God are led to praise the Infinite for what he is rather than to fear him for what he does.

(From: Og Mandino (1923 - 1996)
I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness for it shows me the stars.

(From: Robert Hunter, Scarlet Begonias (The Grateful Dead)
Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

(From: The ASB Bible - John 3:21)
"But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God."

(From:
Marianne Williamson, "A Return to Love," 1992)

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

(From: Saint Francis of Assisi (1181 - 1226)
All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.

(From: Bertrand Russell (1872 - 1970)
Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man.

(From: Marion Zimmer Bradley)
Without a dream to light your way, the world is a very dark place.

(From: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr)
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-101 Section-0)
There really is a true and genuine inner voice, that "true light which lights every man who comes into the world." And this spirit leading is distinct from the ethical prompting of human conscience. The feeling of religious assurance is more than an emotional feeling. The assurance of religion transcends the reason of the mind, even the logic of philosophy. Religion is faith, trust, and assurance.

(From: The ASB Bible - Mark 4:22-23)
"For nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been secret, but that it would come to light.
"If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."

*******************************************
The Sermon

The Light is Truth but Truth alone is not The Light.
The Light is Beauty but Beauty alone is not The Light.
The Light is Goodness but Goodness alone is not The Light.
