Welcome by: Pastor Daniel

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within. You are the Temple. You are the Congregation. Any and All Truth is the Gospel. The Divine Spirit within you is your True Minister.

It is the exact beginning of Saturday Morning May 4
th, 2013 (12am), as I sit here to compose this week's Sunday Service... My wife Jill and I are leaving at some point this morning to begin our Long anticipated Vacation with two of our Dearest Friends at a Beach House in Gleneden, Oregon (between Depoe Bay and Lincoln City). We are going to spend Saturday evening in a hotel in The Dalles, OR and then make a leisurely drive to Gleneden on Sunday. We won't be returning home until Saturday the 11th of May.

It is likely that I will do an adequate amount of Ocean Fishing both from the beach, near our beachhouse, and Wednesday (weather cooperating) or Thursday, I will be going out sport fishing with the Tradewinds fleet out of Depoe Bay, OR. God willing, I will catch limits on good sized Lingcod and Northern Pacific Rockfish (i.e.: Cabazon, Black Sea Bass, Tiger Fish, etc... ), which we and our friends will expertly prepare and consume together. I Love Ocean Fishing/Fish!!!

Most early mornings will be devoted to visually scanning the beach for Agates and surf stones that compel us to pick them up. This is an activity that myself and my dear friend since high school have a certain passion for... Our Spouses fortunately, though they may not personally Share our compulsion for “Rocking” do in fact allow us to enjoy our own pursuit of that thoroughly enjoyable activity.

What exactly does any of that have to do with the topic for Sunday's Sunday Service?
Well let's just See, shall we?

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #683, is Enjoyment…

Quotes

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-2)
The goal of human self-realization should be spiritual, not material. The only realities worth striving for are divine, spiritual, and eternal. Mortal man is entitled to the enjoyment of physical pleasures and to the satisfaction of human affections; he is benefited by loyalty to human associations and temporal institutions; but these are not the eternal foundations upon which to build the immortal personality which must transcend space, vanquish time, and achieve the eternal destiny of divine perfection and finaliter service.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-84 Section-5)
Let man enjoy himself; let the human race find pleasure in a thousand and one ways; let evolutionary mankind explore all forms of legitimate self-gratification, the fruits of the long upward biologic struggle. Man has well earned some of his present-day joys and pleasures. But look you well to the goal of destiny!

(From: Bertrand Russell (1872 - 1970 )
The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.

(From: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832 )
Enjoy when you can, and endure when you must.

(From: The ASB Bible - Timothy I 6:17-19)
Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-111 Section-4)
Happiness and joy take origin in the inner life. You cannot experience real joy all by yourself. A solitary life is fatal to happiness. Even families and nations will enjoy life more if they share it with others.

(From: Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719 )
From social intercourse are derived some of the highest enjoyments of life; where there is a free interchange of sentiments the mind acquires new ideas, and by frequent exercise of its powers, the understanding gains fresh vigor.

(From: Paul Goodman (1911 - 1972 )
Enjoyment is not a goal, it is a feeling that accompanies important ongoing activity.

(From: Rita Mae Brown )
I finally figured out the only reason to be alive is to enjoy it.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-138 Section-6)
“My children, go for a day of play. Rest yourselves from the arduous labors of the kingdom and enjoy the refreshment that comes from reverting to your former vocations or from discovering new sorts of recreational activity.”

(From: Eddie Cantor (1892 - 1964 )
Slow down and enjoy life. It's not only the scenery you miss by going too fast - you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.

(From: Anthony J. D'Angelo, The College Blue Book )
Life is meant to be enjoyed, not endured.

(From: Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862), Journal, February 11, 1840 )
He enjoys true leisure who has time to improve his soul's estate.

(From: Voltaire (1694 - 1778 )
Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too.

(From: Storm Jameson )
Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed.

(From: Robert Brault )
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

(From: James Taylor )
The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Let us allow ourselves to Enjoy those things that we Enjoy, and let us allow others to Enjoy those things that They Enjoy. In those times when we actually do Enjoy the same thing, let us not hesitate to Enjoy them together.

Let us Enjoy one another... because of what we may have in common And also because of how we are different!

There is a Soul for every Enjoyment and there is an Enjoyment for every Soul

If God did not want us to Enjoy Life, why would he create so many different ways for us to do so?
*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
Teach us how to enjoy more.

You ALL are Within the Infinitely Loving Embrace of our Universal Parent,

The Creator's Infinite Love to all of You,

(From:
Ralph Waldo Emerson )
So much of our time is spent in preparation, so much in routine, and so much in retrospect, that the amount of each person's genius is confined to a very few hours.”

(From: Henry Van Dyke )
“As long as habit and routine dictate the pattern of living, new dimensions of the soul will not emerge.”

(From: Ben Nicholas )
“Most of life is routine - dull and grubby, but routine is the momentum that keeps a man going. If you wait for inspiration you'll be standing on the corner after the parade is a mile down the street.”

(From: Unknown)
“Spontaneity is the quality of being able to do something just because you feel like it at the moment, of trusting your instincts, of taking yourself by surprise and snatching from the clutches of your well-organized routine, a bit of unscheduled pleasure”

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-155 Section-6)
When you once begin to find God in your soul, presently you will begin to discover him in other men's souls and eventually in all the creatures and creations of a mighty universe. But what chance does the Father have to appear as a God of supreme loyalties and divine ideals in the souls of men who give little or no time to the thoughtful contemplation of such eternal realities? While the mind is not the seat of the spiritual nature, it is indeed the gateway thereto.

But do not make the mistake of trying to prove to other men that you have found God; you cannot consciously produce such valid proof, albeit there are two positive and powerful demonstrations of the fact that you are God-knowing, and they are:

1. The fruits of the spirit of God showing forth in your daily routine life.

2. The fact that your entire life plan furnishes positive proof that you have unreservedly risked everything you are and have on the adventure of survival after death in the pursuit of the hope of finding the God of eternity, whose presence you have foretasted in time.

(From: Andre Maurois )
“All of us, from time to time, need a plunge into freedom and novelty, after which routine and discipline will seem delightful by contrast”

(From: Amos Bronson Alcott )
“The less routine the more life.”

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Routines can be helpful...
...for remembering to do certain necessary things.
...for getting things done in the correct order.
...for budgeting your time so there is enough of it to get everything done.
...as long as you are the master of your Routines....

But when Life Becomes Routine...
...when you have become a slave to Routine...
...when you cannot function adequately without a Routine...
...when spontaneity, and creativity, and inspiration and originality are forsaken for the safety and predictability of Routine...

Then Life becomes mere existence, a habit, each day no more special than the last...

When Routine rules relationships, the enjoyment of relationship suffers.
This is just as true in your relationship with God.
Is your Relationship with God Routine... repetitive... predictable?
If so, how Soul Energizing can That be?
Loving Service to your fellow human beings is a sure fire way to bring newness and excitement into your relationship with your Creator...

Change happens.
There is no Growth without change.
Those who fear change and try to thwart it will merely succeed in prohibiting Growth.
Change will inevitably come despite their best efforts to eradicate it.

Growth may be unconscious...
Growth may well be purposeful...
but...
One cannot force Growth...
They must allow it...
Though they Can create an environment that Encourages it.

Growth is in no way inevitable...
Growth can be inhibited...
Growth can be avoided.
Growth can be prevented

Growth...
Seek it out Willingly and it will find you.

(From: The Book of Runes -#6 - Initiation / Something Hidden (Perth)

A counsel against expecting too much, or expecting in the ordinary way, for the old way has come to an end. You simply cannot repeat the old and not suffer. Call in your scattered energies, concentrate on your own life at this moment, your own requirements for growth. More important, Perth counsels you not to focus on outcomes, nor to bind yourself with the memory of past achievement. In so doing, you rob yourself of a true present, which is the only time in which self-change can be realized.

(From: Carl Jung (1875 - 1961 )
In studying the history of the human mind one is impressed again and again by the fact that the growth of the mind is the widening of the range of consciousness, and that each step forward has been a most painful and laborious achievement.

(From: Susan Taylor )
Seeds of faith are always within us; sometimes it takes a crisis to nourish and encourage their growth.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-5 Section-3)
The spiritual growth of the soul takes place wholly independently of the intellectual self-consciousness.

(From: R. A. Salvatore, Sojourn )
There is a wide world out there, my friend, full of pain, but filled with joy as well. The former keeps you on the path of growth, and the latter makes the journey tolerable.

(From: The Book of Runes -#5 - Strength / Manhood / Womanhood/ A Wild Ox (Uruz)
Learn to adapt yourself to the demands of such a creative time. Firm principles attach to this Rune, and at the same time humility is called for, since in order to rule you must learn how to serve. This Rune puts you on notice that your Soul and the Universe support the new growth.

(From: Joanne Field )
The growth of understanding follows an ascending spiral rather than a straight line.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-1)
Growth is not truly indicated by mere products but rather by progress. Real educational growth is indicated by enhancement of ideals, increased appreciation of values, new meanings of values, and augmented loyalty to supreme values.

(From: John F. Kennedy (1917 - 1963 )
Conformity is the jailer of freedom, and the enemy of growth.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-1)
The chief inhibitors of growth are prejudice and ignorance.

(From: George Eliot (1819 - 1880 )
The strongest principle of growth lies in human choice.

(From: M. Scott Peck )
Everything that happens in life is there to aid our spiritual growth.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-0)
Love supplies the soil for religious growth

(From: The ASB Bible - Ephesians 4:15)
but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-91 Section-8)
Genuine prayer adds to spiritual growth, modifies attitudes, and yields that satisfaction which comes from communion with divinity. It is a spontaneous outburst of God-consciousness.

(From: Henry Miller (1891 - 1980 )
All growth is a leap in the dark, a spontaneous unpremeditated act without the benefit of experience.

(From: Gail Sheehy)
Growth demands a temporary surrender of security.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-1)
There are present in all normal mortals certain innate drives toward growth and self-realization which function if they are not specifically inhibited. The certain technique of fostering this constitutive endowment of the potential of spiritual growth is to maintain an attitude of wholehearted devotion to supreme values.

(From: Mortimer Adler )
The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we live.

(From: Peter McWilliams, Life 101 )
Acceptance is such an important commodity, some have called it "the first law of personal growth."

(From: Joanna Field)
I began to have an idea of my life, not as the slow shaping of achievement to fit my preconceived purposes, but as the gradual discovery and growth of a purpose which I did not know.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-1)
Loyal persons are growing persons, and growth is an impressive and inspiring reality. Live loyally today — grow — and tomorrow will attend to itself. The quickest way for a tadpole to become a frog is to live loyally each moment as a tadpole.

(From: The RSV Bible - Mark 4:8-9 )
...And other seeds fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold." And he said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

Quotes
*******
(From:
Jean de la Bruyere (1645 - 1696 )
It is fortunate to be of high birth, but it is no less so to be of such character that people do not care to know whether you are or are not.

(From: Abigail van Buren (1918 - )
The best index to a person's character is
(a) how he treats people who can't do him any good, and
(b) how he treats people who can't fight back.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-184 Section-2)
It requires a great and noble character, having started out wrong, to turn about and go right. All too often one's own mind tends to justify continuance in the path of error when once it is entered upon.

(From: The Book of Runes - #15 - Teiwaz)
Always the battle of the Spiritual Warrior is with the self. Funding a will through action, yet unattached to outcomes, remaining mindful that all you can really do is stay out of your own way and let the Will of Heaven flow through you---these are among the hallmarks of the Spiritual Warrior.
Embodied in this Rune is the sword of discrimination that enables you to cut away the old, the dead, the extraneous. And yet, with Teiwaz comes certain knowledge that the universe always has the first move. Patience is the virtue of this Rune, and it recalls the words of St. Augustine that “the reward of patience is patience.”
Here you are asked to look within, to delve down to the foundations of your life itself. Only in so doing can you hope to deal with the deepest needs of your nature and to tap into your most profound resources. The molding of character is at issue when Teiwaz appears in your spread.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882 )
Character is higher than intellect... A great soul will be strong to live, as well as to think.

(From: Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC )
Everyone has the obligation to ponder well his own specific traits of character. He must also regulate them adequately and not wonder whether someone else's traits might suit him better. The more definitely his own a man's character is, the better it fits him.

(From: Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 - 1962), My Day )
People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-3 Section-5)
Is courage — strength of character — desirable? Then must man be reared in an environment which necessitates grappling with hardships and reacting to disappointments.

(From: Evan Esar (1899 - 1995 )
Character is what you have left when you've lost everything you can lose.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-118 Section-10)
the apparent cruelty of a perverse fate that heaps tribulation upon some suffering mortal may in reality be the tempering fire that is transmuting the soft iron of immature personality into the tempered steel of real character.

(From: Samuel Smiles )
It is possible that the scrupulously honest man may not grow rich so fast as the unscrupulous and dishonest one; but success will be of a truer kind, earned without fraud or injustice. And even though a man should for a time be unsuccessful, still he must be honest; better to lose all and save character. For character is itself a fortune.

(From: Og Mandino (1923 - 1996 )
Sound character provides the power with which a person may ride the emergencies of life instead of being overwhelmed by them.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-140 Section-4)
Strong characters are not derived from not doing wrong but rather from actually doing right. Unselfishness is the badge of human greatness. The highest levels of self-realization are attained by worship and service. The happy and effective person is motivated, not by fear of wrongdoing, but by love of right doing.

(From: Elmer G. Letterman )
Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open.

(From: Joan Didion (1934 - ), "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" )
Character - the willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life - is the source from which self respect springs.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-160 Section-2)
Many noble human impulses die because there is no one to hear their expression. Truly, it is not good for man to be alone. Some degree of recognition and a certain amount of appreciation are essential to the development of human character. Without the genuine love of a home, no child can achieve the full development of normal character. Character is something more than mere mind and morals.

(From: George Matthew Adams )
There is no such thing as a 'self-made' man. We are made up of thousands of others. Everyone who has ever done a kind deed for us, or spoken one word of encouragement to us, has entered into the make-up of our character and of our thoughts, as well as our success.

(From: Phillips Brooks (1835 - 1893 )
Character may be manifested in the great moments, but it is made in the small ones.

(From: James Mechener )
Character consists of what you do on the third and forth tries.

(From: H. Jackson Browne, P. S. I Love You )
Our character is what we do when we think no one is looking.

(From: Horace Mann (1796 - 1859 )
Character is what God and the angels know of us; reputation is what men and women think of us.

(From: John Ballantine Gough )
A man is what he is, not what men say he is. His character no man can touch. His character is what he is before his God and his Judge; and only he himself can damage that. His reputations what men say he is. That can be damaged; but reputation is for time, character is for eternity

(From: George Washington (1732 - 1799 )
I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.

The Sermon

Our thoughts often determine the things that we say.

Our Character reliably determines those things that we Do without giving it much of a thought.
