Welcome by: Pastor Daniel

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

A Happy New Year we wish to you All! Did you make a New Years Resolution?

The topic of today's New Years Service and Sunday Service, #741, is Change…

The Sermon
***********
Ahhh… a Fresh New Year is upon us! It is the time when so many people's minds turn to thoughts of New Years Resolutions… a resolution to do “This” finally or, more likely it is a resolution to stop doing “That” finally.

Resolutions are a simple thing to make really. You've probably heard the saying, “If it were easy, Everyone would do it.” Well… resolutions fall into that category don't you think? So Incredibly easy to Make, yet… so very difficult to follow through with, wouldn't you say? Who among us has not made a resolution in this life? Who among us has not failed in the final accomplishment of some resolution or another? In fact those times when a person holds True to a resolution are so special, so Rare, that they are often worn openly like a Badge of Honor. Far more resolutions fall to the way-side than don't though… do they not? Why is that do you think?

Why do people Make resolutions then when they so often are unsuccessful? What is it that people are truly Wanting when they make a resolution? Why… it is Change of course that they desire… people make a resolution because they want something or other to Change about their life or their situation or their environment. But Change is Difficult! Change takes a long Time! Who wants to go through all the struggles and expend all the effort that Change requires when it is so much easier to make a nice, neat, simple little resolution once a year when no one really expects to succeed at it Anyway?

At least with resolutions we are on the right track. Resolutions are inevitably about a modification or alteration of the self in some way. Funny though when people talk about Change… it often (usually?), is about others doing the changing. Change becomes much simpler when it is others that must make it. Almost as simple as… Making a Resolution.

Is there something about yourself that you would like to Change this year?

Dan Millman, The Way of the Peaceful Warrior)
Your mind is your predicament. It wants to be free of change. Free of pain, free of the obligations of life and death. But change is a law, and no amount of pretending will alter that reality.

(From: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 - 1882)
All things must change to something new, to something strange.

(From: William James (1842 - 1910)
Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-146 Section-2)
The cry of the righteous is the faith act of the child of God which opens the door of the Father's storehouse of goodness, truth, and mercy, and these good gifts have long been in waiting for the son's approach and personal appropriation. Prayer does not change the divine attitude toward man, but it does change man's attitude toward the changeless Father.

(From: Soren Kierkegaard (1813 - 1855)
Prayer does not change God, but changes him who prays.

(From: Norman Vincent Peale (1898 - 1993)

It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not.

(From: Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987)
They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.

(From: Oprah Winfrey)
If you want your life to be more rewarding, you have to change the way you think.

(From: Katherine Mansfield (1888 - 1923)
Could we change our attitude, we should not only see life differently, but life itself would come to be different. Life would undergo a change of appearance because we ourselves had undergone a change in attitude.

(From: Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742 - 1799)
I cannot say whether things will get better if we change; what I can say is they must change if they are to get better.
