The wise old Mother Superior from County Tipperary was dying.

The nuns gathered around her bed trying to make her comfortable. They gave her some warm milk to drink, but she refused it. Then one nun took the glass back to the kitchen. Remembering a bottle of Irish whiskey received as a gift the previous Christmas, she opened and poured a generous amount into the warm milk. Back at Mother Superior's bed, she held the glass to her lips. Mother drank a little, then a little more. Before they knew it, she had drunk the whole glass down to the last drop.
Mother," the nuns asked with earnest, "Please give us some wisdom before you die."
She raised herself up in bed with a pious look on her face and said, "Don't sell that cow."

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-150 Section-5)
"You cannot buy salvation; you cannot earn righteousness. Salvation is the gift of God, and righteousness is the natural fruit of the spirit-born life of sonship in the kingdom. You are not to be saved because you live a righteous life; rather is it that you live a righteous life because you have already been saved, have recognized sonship as the gift of God and service in the kingdom as the supreme delight of life on earth.”

(From: Abraham Lincoln)
I have always found that mercy bears richer fruits than strict justice.

(From: Sathya Sai Baba)
Having come upon the world stage as 'man', one should act the role effectively. The tree is known by the fruit. The human body is the temple of God. He is installed there. Yearn for the realization of this Truth, seek to discover it and derive bliss therefrom - that is bhakthi (devotion, the path of love of God).

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-142 Section-6)
Jesus answered: "Already does the spirit of the Father in heaven indwell you. If you would be led by this spirit from above, very soon would you begin to see with the eyes of the spirit, and then by the wholehearted choice of spirit guidance would you be born of the spirit since your only purpose in living would be to do the will of your Father who is in heaven. And so finding yourself born of the spirit and happily in the kingdom of God, you would begin to bear in your daily life the abundant fruits of the spirit."

(From: Sir Winston Churchill)
Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.

(From: Aristotle)
Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-148 Section-6)
Sometimes the planting of a seed necessitates its death, the death of your fondest hopes, before it can be reborn to bear the fruits of new life and new opportunity. And from them you will learn to suffer less through sorrow and disappointment, first, by making fewer personal plans concerning other personalities, and then, by accepting your lot when you have faithfully performed your duty.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-143 Section-2)
"If, then, my children, you are born of the spirit, you are forever delivered from the self-conscious bondage of a life of self-denial and watchcare over the desires of the flesh, and you are translated into the joyous kingdom of the spirit, whence you spontaneously show forth the fruits of the spirit in your daily lives; and the fruits of the spirit are the essence of the highest type of enjoyable and ennobling self-control, even the heights of terrestrial mortal attainment--true self-mastery."

(From: The RSV Bible - Luke 8:15)
And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-34 Section-6)
The consciousness of the spirit domination of a human life is presently attended by an increasing exhibition of the characteristics of the Spirit in the life reactions of such a spirit-led mortal, "for the fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance."

There was this gracious lady mailing an old family Bible to her brother in another part of the country.
"Is there anything breakable in here?" asked the postal clerk.
"Only the Ten Commandments," answered the lady.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Last Sunday was the first (and hopefully Only), time that we missed sending out a Church Within Sunday Service since we began doing the Sunday Services on September 29
th, 1996. It was due to our computer dieing (all but the hard-drive “Thank You God!”). The New Computer is now fully in service, and so also once again is The Church Within.
(Now all we have to do is Pay for the new computer. -sigh- “There's Gotta be a Horsy in here Someplace!” ;-)

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #320, is Excellence…

Quotes
*******
(From: Abraham 11/10/2002 - the Woods Cross TeaM)
There are many techniques to live the mortal life. Those that stay spiritually connected are open to new techniques and solutions. Life becomes a work of art. There is beauty found in the repetitive old daily chores--the average becomes a work of art. In your attempts to see the beauty in all things, and live an artistic life, you really are living fully in each moment, definitely appreciative of Father's hand in all things. This is certainly improvement for the attitude and a strengthening of your ability to fully appreciate, even in times of difficulty.

(From: Voltaire (1694 - 1778)
Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.

(From: Vincent T. Lombardi)
The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.

(From: The RSV Bible - Corinthians II 8:7-12)
Now as you excel in everything--in faith, in utterance, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in your love for us--see that you excel in this gracious work also. I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. And in this matter I give my advice: it is best for you now to complete what a year ago you began not only to do but to desire, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a man has, not according to what he has not.

(From: Janet Jackson)
Dreams can become a reality when we possess a vision that is characterized by the willingness to work hard, a desire for excellence and a belief in our right and our responsibility to be equal members of society.

(From: Publilius Syrus (~100 BC)
It takes a long time to bring excellence to maturity.

(From: Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC)
The superior man is modest in his speech, but excels in his actions.

(From: The RSV Bible - Corinthians I 12:31-13:10)
But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect; but when the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-99 Section-5)
Since true religion is a matter of personal spiritual experience, it is inevitable that each individual religionist must have his own and personal interpretation of the realization of that spiritual experience.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-6)
Religion is not a specific function of life; rather is it a mode of living. True religion is a wholehearted devotion to some reality which the religionist deems to be of supreme value to himself and for all mankind. And the outstanding characteristics of all religions are: unquestioning loyalty and wholehearted devotion to supreme values.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-101 Section-4)
In the last analysis, religion is to be judged by its fruits, according to the manner and the extent to which it exhibits its own inherent and divine excellence.

Quotes
*******
(From: Dag Hammarskjold)
Pray that your loneliness may spur you into finding something to live for, great enough to die for.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-91 Section-8)
Modern man is perplexed by the thought of talking things over with God in a purely personal way. Many have abandoned regular praying; they only pray when under unusual pressure--in emergencies. Man should be unafraid to talk to God, but only a spiritual child would undertake to persuade, or presume to change, God.

But real praying does attain reality. Even when the air currents are ascending, no bird can soar except by outstretched wings. Prayer elevates man because it is a technique of progressing by the utilization of the ascending spiritual currents of the universe.
Genuine prayer adds to spiritual growth, modifies attitudes, and yields that satisfaction which comes from communion with divinity. It is a spontaneous outburst of God-consciousness.
God answers man's prayer by giving him an increased revelation of truth, an enhanced appreciation of beauty, and an augmented concept of goodness. Prayer is a subjective gesture, but it contacts with mighty objective realities on the spiritual levels of human experience; it is a meaningful reach by the human for superhuman values. It is the most potent spiritual-growth stimulus.
Words are irrelevant to prayer; they are merely the intellectual channel in which the river of spiritual supplication may chance to flow. The word value of a prayer is purely autosuggestive in private devotions and sociosuggestive in group devotions. God answers the soul's attitude, not the words.
Prayer is not a technique of escape from conflict but rather a stimulus to growth in the very face of conflict. Pray only for values, not things; for growth, not for gratification.

(From: Hippocrates (460 BC - 377 BC)
Prayer indeed is good, but while calling on the gods a man should himself lend a hand.

(From: Francis Cardinal Spellman)
Pray as if everything depended upon God and work as if everything depended upon man.

(From: Phillips Brooks)
Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be the miracle.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 6:6)
"But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

(From: Thomas a Kempis (1380 - 1471)
Never be entirely idle; but either be reading, or writing, or praying or meditating or endeavoring something for the public good.

(From: Soren Kierkegaard)
Prayer does not change God, but changes him who prays.

(From: Tyron Edwards)
Whoever in prayer can say, "Our Father," acknowledges and should feel the brotherhood of the whole race of mankind.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-91 Section-8)
To some individuals prayer is the calm expression of gratitude; to others, a group expression of praise, social devotions; sometimes it is the imitation of another's religion, while in true praying it is the sincere and trusting communication of the spiritual nature of the creature with the anywhere presence of the spirit of the Creator.

(From: Kahlil Gibran)
You pray in your distress and in your need; would that you might also pray in the fullness of your joy and in your days of abundance.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-91 Section-6)
But the efficacy of prayer in the personal spiritual experience of the one who prays is in no way dependent on such a worshiper's intellectual understanding, philosophic acumen, social level, cultural status, or other mortal acquirements. The psychic and spiritual concomitants of the prayer of faith are immediate, personal, and experiential. There is no other technique whereby every man, regardless of all other mortal accomplishments, can so effectively and immediately approach the threshold of that realm wherein he can communicate with his Maker, where the creature contacts with the reality of the Creator, with the indwelling Thought Adjuster.

(From: The RSV Bible - Mark 11:24-25)
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against any one; so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses."

(From: William Shakespeare)
Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
That in the course of justice none of us
Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy.

The Sermon
***********
Have you ever had one of those “Dear God Please Help Me!” experiences where you were seemingly at the “end of your rope” and then… someone “out of the blue” showed up to help you? …and then you thought, or maybe even Said, “You were the Answer to my Prayers!”? If you think about it, I'll bet you can come up with at least Several… can't you? “Sure… Sure you can. I Knew you Could.” Didn't it feel Great to know that someone Cared enough to help you out?

And “on the other side of the coin”…

Have you ever been seemingly just “doing your own thing” and then happen to notice someone in a distressful situation and stop to “lend a hand”? …you didn't really think about it, you just Did it? “No big deal” right? But then… the look of Relief you saw on their face, in their eyes as if they were astonished “to know that someone Cared enough to help”… they might have even said to you, or at least thought, “You were the Answer to my Prayers!” I'll bet you've had at least one, perhaps Several of those experiences as Well… haven't you? “Sure… Sure you have. I Knew you Did.” Didn't it feel Great to know that someone appreciated your sincere desire to help?

God so often touches the Souls of others that they may take part (when they are willing), in the answering of your Prayers.

How often are You God's Willing and unselfish partner in the answering of the Prayers of Others?

It's Worth being Aware of, isn't it?
