Welcome

Greetings my Dearest Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to The Church that is Within.

I think I'll start today by drawing a single Rune. Why? Oh, I don't know... let's just call it an "Angel Bump", or... Intuition if you prefer that terminology.

Shall we see where it takes us?

(from: A CDA TeaM transcript - 10/25/98)
The techniques of meditation are many, and they all focus to that single experience of communion with God. It is often taught that the silence of the mind is the goal of meditation. This is not the complete and final goal; it is the end goal of mind meditation. Spiritual communion may be attained whether or not there is mental activity. If, for instance, you are not inclined to silence of mind, then directed thinking will better bring you into that fellowship than struggle with a technique more fitting to another personality with a differing mental endowment.

(from: The Book of Runes - #22)
Here is the final Rune belonging to the Cycle of Initiation. Drawing Dagaz marks a major shift or breakthrough in the process of self-change, a complete transformation in attitude---a 180-degree turn. For some, the transition is so radical that they no longer continue to live the ordinary life in the ordinary way.

Because the timing is right, the outcome is assured although not, from the present vantage point, predictable. In each life there comes at least one moment which, if recognized and seized, transforms the course of that life forever. Rely, therefore, on radical trust, even though the moment may call for you to leap, empty-handed into the void. With this Rune your Warrior Nature reveals itself.

A major period of achievement and prosperity is often introduced by this Rune. The darkness is behind you; daylight has come. However, as always, you are reminded not to collapse yourself into the future or to behave recklessly in your new situation. A lot of hard work can be involved in a time of transformation. Undertake to do it Joyfully.

(The Urantia Papers - Paper-99 Section-4)
True religion is a meaningful way of living dynamically face to face with the commonplace realities of everyday life. But if religion is to stimulate individual development of character and augment integration of personality, it must not be standardized. If it is to stimulate evaluation of experience and serve as a value-lure, it must not be stereotyped. If religion is to promote supreme loyalties, it must not be formalized.
No matter what upheavals may attend the social and economic growth of civilization, religion is genuine and worth while if it fosters in the individual an experience in which the sovereignty of truth, beauty, and goodness prevails, for such is the true spiritual concept of supreme reality. And through love and worship this becomes meaningful as fellowship with man and sonship with God.
After all, it is what one believes rather than what one knows that determines conduct and dominates personal performances. Purely factual knowledge exerts very little influence upon the average man unless it becomes emotionally activated. But the activation of religion is super-emotional, unifying the entire human experience on transcendent levels through contact with, and release of, spiritual energies in the mortal life.
During the psychologically unsettled times of the twentieth century, amid the economic upheavals, the moral crosscurrents, and the sociologic rip tides of the cyclonic transitions of a scientific era, thousands upon thousands of men and women have become humanly dislocated; they are anxious, restless, fearful, uncertain, and unsettled; as never before in the world's history they need the consolation and stabilization of sound religion.

(from: The RSV Bible - James 1:27 - 2:8)
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
My brethren, show no partiality as you hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man with gold rings and in fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, "Have a seat here, please," while you say to the poor man, "Stand there," or, "Sit at my feet," have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brethren. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you, is it not they who drag you into court? Is it not they who blaspheme that honorable name which was invoked over you? If you really fulfill the royal law, according to the scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well.

(A Zen Parable Encore)
Word spread across the countryside about the wise Holy Man who lived in a small house atop the mountain. A man from the village decided to make the long and difficult journey to visit him. When he arrived at the house, he saw an old servant inside who greeting him at the door. "I would like to see the wise Holy Man," he said to the servant. The servant smiled and led him inside. As they walked through the house, the man from the village looked eagerly around the house, anticipating his encounter with the Holy Man. Before he knew it, he had been led to the back door and escorted outside. He stopped and turned to the servant, "But I want to see the Holy Man!"
"You already have," said the old man. "Everyone you may meet in life, even if they appear plain and insignificant... see each of them as a wise Holy Man. If you do this, then whatever problem you brought here today will be solved."

(from: The Tao Te Ching - #53)
The great Way is easy,
yet people prefer the side paths.
Be aware when things are out of balance.
Stay centered within the Tao.

When rich speculators prosper
While farmers lose their land;
when government officials spend money
on weapons instead of cures;
when the upper class is extravagant and irresponsible
while the poor have nowhere to turn-
all this is robbery and chaos.
It is not in keeping with the Tao.

The Sermon
**********
Ahh... Sunday! Only two more days that we must put up with the name calling, the falsehoods, the incessant clamoring of overindulgent egos assaulting each other and us on television, the radio, in the Newspapers, and in our snail mail... well... at least as regards US political representation and special interest issues anyways. Won't it be Grand? ;-)

Don't ya hate it when you get all caught up in ego stuff 'cause you're surrounded by it on all sides... no matter where you seem to turn? But, where can you go to get away from it? There is only One place. The place where you can get more fully in touch with your Soul... and with God... Within. I'm Way over due for some Good Peaceful stillness and meditation... how about you?

Can't WAIT 'till that New Day gets here. Seems like I been sittin' here forever, waitin' for it! Yeah... Then I'll Really be able to do something with my life... Then... Huh? Ya say, Today's a New day? It's Here? Stop Waiting? I can do something with my life Today? Right Now?

Ya Think?

(from: "Forgotten Truth" - by Huston Smith)
"Hope is indispensable to human health---to psychological health most immediately, but because man is a psychosomatic whole, to physical health as well… Ascending a sheer-faced cliff, a mountaineer can lodge his pick in an overhead crevice and, chinning himself on it, advance. Hope is the psyche's pick."

(from: "The Tao of Pooh" - by Benjamin Hoff)
"As Pooh found out with the North Pole, once we see what the situation is and what we can do about it, we need to utilize everything we find along the way in order to accomplish whatever is required. More often than not, the things we need are there already; all we have to do is make use of them."

(from: "The Observing Self" - by Arthur J. Deikman, MD)
"Religions, while they prescribe the virtuous life, have a strong tendency to emphasize reward and punishment… the accumulation of heavenly credit… The ability to receive Knowledge is a functional matter, having nothing to do with reward or punishment in the usual sense. Thus, one does not "earn" enlightenment, one becomes capable of receiving it."

(from: The RSV Bible - Romans 5:2-5)
Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-159 Section-3 - quoting Jesus)
Teach all believers that those who enter the kingdom are not thereby rendered immune to the accidents of time or to the ordinary catastrophes of nature. Believing the gospel will not prevent getting into trouble, but it will insure that you shall be unafraid when trouble does overtake you. If you dare to believe in me and wholeheartedly proceed to follow after me, you shall most certainly by so doing enter upon the sure pathway to trouble. I do not promise to deliver you from the waters of adversity, but I do promise to go with you through all of them.

The Sermon
**********
Where is God when we need Him?

Why did you let this happen, God? How could you be so cruel, God? Why didn't you answer my prayer, God? I prayed with all the faith I have within me that you would heal my child, my wife, my husband… Why didn't you answer, God? Why didn't you hear me and respond by giving me what I expected should be your "gift"?…what I WANTED!

Have you ever been in that space mentally, emotionally? Most people I have known have experienced a major crisis in their lives at which time they turned to God, and many felt God didn't hear them. Some have disowned Jesus and God for the rest of their lives. Some have been able to look back, after adequate grieving, and see God's gifts after the fact.

Have you lost a dearly loved one? Have you been rejected by one whom you gave all your love to? Have you given birth to a child who was less than perfect? Has your child or loved one been maimed or killed in a horrid accident? All these experiences leave us truly devastated, and seeking answers.

I watched the Maury Povich show this Friday. It was about courageous children. One teen had been horribly burned in a house fire at 6 months of age. She has lived her life being rejected, taunted, and friendless because of her truly horrid appearance. Another teen had her jeans pant leg caught in a lawnmower and it cut off both her feet. She yearned to dance. Two teens had been horribly attacked by dogs and suffered severe trauma and/or disfigurement. Another teen had his arm completely severed in half in a tractor accident. When asked how the now crippled arm had affected his life, he said, "Well, I've had to adjust my golf swing!"

God didn't cause these horrid accidents. Due to the imperfect state of our human bodies, He can't always perform the miracle we yearn for, or He may choose not to give the miracle because He sees a greater miracle for all involved in surviving the experience. But was God there? Did he respond? Well…

Where did these kids find the courage to face each day? Who did God bring to them to help them find the courage to fight for life, to bear the cruelties of peers? How did they find hope? Do they want to be forever pitied? Or do they want to be seen for who they are inside---their human spirit? Where did the parents find the courage to encourage their children to want to live, to make it through another painful day? What transformed the parents from pitying to inspiring? Did those parents discover love for their children that went far beyond the love they might have experienced had the accident not happened? Did they inspire abilities in their child in the face of their limitations that otherwise would have lain dormant their entire lives? How has the accident changed their perspective on life for their entire lifetime; like what is truly valuable in the life experience. How many have become role models for others of what is truly important in life, BECAUSE they survived their experience?

God is always with us. He dwells within each one of us and hears each and every soulful cry. He may not give us the outward miracle we desire---the perfected body, the perfected mind. But the gifts of courage, new ways to be "all we can be" in the face of limitations and loss (the gift of inspired creative thought), the gift of unconditional love, compassion for all God's children, the desire to be a role model for others who have suffered, who are discouraged---these are some of God's gifts. Through our most challenging experiences, those of us who look for the gift, can find it many fold once we have grieved our loss. Are not these gifts of the human spirit to persevere in the face of grievous losses the greatest growth we could ever hope to attain as humans? Do we not then pass on this inspired way of living to others?

So many of us wish we could leave a legacy of ourself when we depart this world. Perhaps we would all benefit from asking ourself what that truly means. What is the greatest gift you can give daily that will be YOUR legacy? A living legacy instead of a material one? Hmmm.

(from: "The Varieties of Religious Experience" by William James 1901-1902)
The highest flights of charity, devotion, trust, patience, bravery to which the wings of human nature have spread themselves have been flown for religious ideals. I can do no more than quote, as to this, some remarks which Sainte-Beuve in his history of Port-Royal makes on the results of conversion or the state of grace.
"Even from the purely human point of view," Sainte-Beuve says, "the phenomenon of grace must still appear sufficiently extraordinary, eminent, and rare, both in its nature and in its effects, to deserve a closer study. For the soul arrives thereby at a certain fixed and invincible state, a state which is genuinely heroic, and from out of which the greatest of deeds which it ever performs are executed. Through all the different forms of communion, and all the diversity of the means which help to produce this state, whether it be reached by a jubilee, by a general confession, by a solitary prayer and effusion, whatever in short to be the place and the occasion, it is easy to recognize that it is fundamentally one state in spirit and fruits. Penetrate a little beneath the diversity of circumstances, and it becomes evident that in modification by which they are affected: there is veritably a single fundamental and identical spirit of piety and charity, common to those who have received grace; an inner state which before all things is one of love and humility, of infinite confidence in God, and of severity for one's self, accompanied with tenderness for others."

(The Urantia Papers - Paper-34 Section-6)
Those who have received and recognized the indwelling of God have been born of the Spirit. "You are the temple of God, and the spirit of God dwells in you." It is not enough that this spirit be poured out upon you; the divine Spirit must dominate and control every phase of human experience.
It is the presence of the divine Spirit, the water of life, that prevents the consuming thirst of mortal discontent and that indescribable hunger of the unspiritualized human mind. Spirit-motivated beings "never thirst, for this spiritual water shall be in them a well of satisfaction springing up into life everlasting." Such divinely watered souls are all but independent of material environment as regards the joys of living and the satisfactions of earthly existence. They are spiritually illuminated and refreshed, morally strengthened and endowed.

(from: The KJV Bible - Psalms 51:11-15)
Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall show forth thy praise.

(The Urantia Papers - Paper-34 Section-6)
The consciousness of the spirit domination of a human life is presently attended by an increasing exhibition of the characteristics of the Spirit in the life reactions of such a spirit-led mortal, "for the fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance." Such spirit-guided and divinely illuminated mortals, while they yet tread the lowly paths of toil and in human faithfulness perform the duties of their earthly assignments, have already begun to discern the lights of eternal life as they glimmer on the faraway shores of another world; already have they begun to comprehend the reality of that inspiring and comforting truth, "The kingdom of God is not meat and drink but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit." And throughout every trial and in the presence of every hardship, spirit-born souls are sustained by that hope which transcends all fear because the love of God is shed abroad in all hearts by the presence of the divine Spirit.

The Sermon
**********
Once upon a time there was a little boy. He had a fairly average childhood, at least so he thought. His parents loved him and he loved them. His brothers and sisters loved him and he dearly loved them also. He was never given cause to fear for his survival, for in all ways he was cared for and protected from the inherent hazards of mortal existence.

Love, laughter and sharing dominated his family life... anger, intolerance and selfishness had little room to grow in his home environment. God was an accepted fact of everyday life and the boy early learned the effectiveness of communication with the Divine. Not that all of his immature prayers were unfailingly answered to his complete satisfaction, but rather that his sincere inner longings were always provided some avenue for attainment. God loved and cared for him personally and he knew it... he felt it.

Theological indoctrination which portrayed the Creator as an angry, jealous, intolerant dictator who demanded atonement before his mercy and forgiveness could be bestowed, were unthinkable and unacceptable to the lad. Even his earthly parents never resorted to such base human emotions and injustices. So how could an Infinitely Loving and Merciful Divine Parent be less compassionate than his own human parents? He refused to believe it.

When the boy grew into young manhood, he left home to experience his own life's path. His desire for a loving relationship such as his parents had exemplified was unquenchable, and to his utter bewilderment and disappointment, seemingly unattainable.

The boy loved easily, so also the young man. But nowhere it seemed could he find the kind of love he had come to know with his parents and siblings. Always would relationships with potential life partners seem to start out that way, then become fearful and dissipate rather than grow, when his love for them deepened and his attachment grew stronger. His sincerest prayers for his own happy family remained frustratingly unanswered... seemingly ignored. Honesty produced far fewer favorable results than did dishonesty... or so it seemed.

At some point, he unceremoniously stopped asking for God's help and began compromising his ideals in an attempt at fabricating a lasting relationship. Shortly thereafter he was married... ready to begin following in his parents' footsteps, so he thought. It was not to be. The same honesty and affection that had worked in his family proved ineffective in his own marriage. His way of loving was frequently misinterpreted... increasingly rejected. Often he would think, "Is my love not obvious? Why can she not see that my motives are innocent and sincere?" It was as if his wife couldn't comprehend his love, his motivations. She couldn't. Her childhood had not been so loving and empowering as had his. He became fearful and possessive... terrified of losing what he did have. This made things only worse for him and eventually his wife left him. At first he despaired and openly mourned his loss, but also he felt relief of a sort, and this confused him for a time. Eventually, freedom from the stress of idealistic compromise began renewing his spirit... his zest for love and life. He vowed to be more discerning the next time.

And indeed he was. Unfortunately his second wife also did not fully understand his way of love, his understanding of family. She had learned from her family that manipulation and subterfuge were the way to get what was wanted... needed. Although his second marriage proved far more satisfying and long lasting than his first, at the midpoint of his life, it too ended in divorce.

It began to dawn him that, in all of his post birth-family experience, he had yet to encounter another who had experienced the same kind of love and self empowerment in their youth as he. Were it not for the fact that he had firsthand knowledge that it was indeed possible, he would have succumbed to the insistence of countless others that that kind of family just doesn't exist in today's world.

The now middle aged man resolved to never again settle for less than his highest ideals. Never again would he try to pretend to be anything different than what he was for anybody... even if it meant living the rest of his life alone. And then, while he wasn't looking, she found him. She loved him because of who he was, not in spite of it. She did not ask that he change to suit her desires, but that he grow to suit his own. She asked only the same kind of respect in return. They discovered together that God had finally answered their individual prayers of so very long ago, by bringing them together only after they were ready to fully appreciate the answer to their youthful, idealistic petitions.

The little boy turned man decided to devote the rest of his life to sharing his experiences of God and his experiences of marriage and family love.

He does so even today.

Perhaps it will one day help another. The idealistic little boy within the man certainly hopes so. He understands that if God so wills, then it will indeed be so.

Quotes

(from: the NASB Bible - James 1:26-27)
If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless. Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-99 Section-2)
Modern religion finds it difficult to adjust its attitude toward the rapidly shifting social changes only because it has permitted itself to become so thoroughly traditionalized, dogmatized, and institutionalized. The religion of living experience finds no difficulty in keeping ahead of all these social developments and economic upheavals, amid which it ever functions as a moral stabilizer, social guide, and spiritual pilot. True religion carries over from one age to another the worth-while culture and that wisdom which is born of the experience of knowing God and striving to be like him.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-99 Section-5)
Someday religionists will get together and actually effect co-operation on the basis of unity of ideals and purposes rather than attempting to do so on the basis of psychological opinions and theological beliefs. Goals rather than creeds should unify religionists. Since true religion is a matter of personal spiritual experience, it is inevitable that each individual religionist must have his own and personal interpretation of the realization of that spiritual experience. Let the term "faith" stand for the individual's relation to God rather than for the creedal formulation of what some group of mortals have been able to agree upon as a common religious attitude.

(from: "Joshua" - by Joseph F. Girzone)
pg.73 - "Jesus came to earth to try to free people from that kind of regimented religion where people are threatened if they don't obey rules and rituals invented by the clergy. Jesus came to teach people that they are God's children and, as God's children, they are free, free to grow as human beings, to become beautiful people as God intended."
pg.75 - "True religion comes from the heart. It is a deep relationship with God, and should bring peace and joy and love to people, not fear and guilt and meanness. And worship has meaning only when it is free. God is not honored by worship that is forced under threat of sin or penalty. Nor is God honored by subservient obedience to religious laws devoid of love. God is pleased only by the free expression of the soul that truly loves him."

The Sermon

Go for a moment, if you will, to that private and special place within you... where truth is an experience rather than an idea... where God is with you, encouraging you onward with the urge: "Wouldn't you Really like to..." where your heartfelt dreams take origin... your Soul. You know the place, don't ya?

Now... ask yourself, "What would be my idea of the Perfect world?", "What would I really like to see the world someday become?" Did ya do that? What were your answers to yourself? Do you think God would like to see the same thing? Is there anything YOU would like to do to help the world become that place... if only you could, or would?

What is it really that stands in your way?

WITH God... All things are possible!

"Wouldn't you Really like to... ?"

Quotes
******
(from: "Joey" - by Joseph F. Girzone)
"No, Joe, you are not a black sheep. Everyone of us falls miserably. Some falls are open for everyone to see. The worst sins are the sins of meanness and cruelty that quietly and secretly destroy others. Your weakness hurts no one, Joe, but yourself, and knowing you since you were a baby, I know how easily you are wounded by the meanness around you, and I cry because I see how deeply that meanness has hurt you. No, you are not a black sheep, Joe. You are a beautiful soul whom God is using in His own strange way to deliver messages to others through your life."

(The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-2 Para-4)
Spirituality becomes at once the indicator of one's nearness to God and the measure of one's usefulness to fellow beings. Spirituality enhances the ability to discover beauty in things, recognize truth in meanings, and discover goodness in values. Spiritual development is determined by capacity therefor and is directly proportional to the elimination of the selfish qualities of love.

(The Urantia Papers - Paper-196 Section-3 Para-18)
God is not the mere invention of man's idealism; he is the very source of all such superanimal insights and values. God is not a hypothesis formulated to unify the human concepts of truth, beauty, and goodness; he is the personality of love from whom all of these universe manifestations are derived. The truth, beauty, and goodness of man's world are unified by the increasing spirituality of the experience of mortals ascending toward Paradise realities. The unity of truth, beauty, and goodness can only be realized in the spiritual experience of the God-knowing personality.

(from: The NASB Bible - Romans 12:2)
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

The Sermon
**********
Awakening to the realization of our own individual spirituality is a momentous occasion in our lives. It is such a profound change from what we are used to experiencing that often times it may throw us into a state of profound confusion. There is tendency, to become addicted to the feeling it gives us and, to stop the forward progress, searching to repeat the exact same feeling.

Many people get stuck in this mode for so long that they begin to doubt that they ever really had the experience because they can't seem to experience it again. Many turn to thrill seeking to try to bring back that feeling, but it never satisfies the same way. So, they look for newer and greater thrills until they realize that it doesn't satisfy the soul's hunger. Eventually they may begin to realize that That particular instant is in the past and will never be repeated.

The only way to avoid this quicksand search for the past is to allow our spirit to learn and mature. This requires a certain honesty with ourselves... acceptance of the fact that we don't and won't know all the answers!!! Because, as soon as we feel that we do, we stop looking for more complete and better answers.

You are correct in believing that no one, including yourself, can fully understand what you are going through... that is, of course excepting the source of your spirit; that source which lives within each and every one of us whether we recognize the fact or not. We all have similar experiences... but No one can have exactly the same experience.

Many people spend their entire lives searching for the same feeling they got when their spirituality first awakened. Rather than going forward and using the spirit leadings they have right there inside of them to mature more fully and to continue on, they search for thrills, for money, for power, for the old remembered feelings. They most often search blindly and without purpose.

To be satisfied, one needs continuing spiritual feelings and experiences... from growth, from feelings of accomplishment, from getting to a point where they really learn to know and identify with the spirit. It is possible to call upon the Spirit guidance at will, rather than searching externally for those things which ultimately do not satisfy the soul's longings. But you must search within to go onward... to mature and find your Own Creator. Because only God Within has all the tools and knowledge to take You further, to take You beyond where you are. God is the source of you... the source of your spirit and knows how far Your spirit can go. God is who one must contact for help... No one else can provide guidance and assurance in the Loving, understanding way that The Divine Parent can.

We cannot progress to a new and greater experience by surrounding ourselves only with others who are at the same or at a lesser stage of spiritual growth than we are. We must also be in constant contact with God and with those who have gone beyond just the "fact" of realization, into the Maturity of spiritual experience. Only in this way can we move forward in our growth and be available to feel the exhilaration of enhanced concept growth. This, many times, requires a reassessment of long held beliefs; beliefs which were needed in their time as scaffolding to build what we now have, but which currently hide the beauty of the structure we have built. We should not forget that the scaffolding was necessary to get us to where we are. But when it is no longer needed, as long as we continue to use it, we are still only on the outside looking in.

Is it time to do a little dismantling?

Is it time to go Within?

Ya Think?
