“The Tortoise, and the Tortoise, and the Tortoise”

Three tortoises, Joe, Steve, and Raymond, go on a picnic. The trouble is, the picnic site is 10 miles away, so the tortoises take 10 whole days to get there.
When they arrive, Joe takes out the sodas and says, 'Alright, Raymond, gimme the bottle opener.' But Raymond doesn't have it, so the tortoises convince him to go back for it, swearing they won't touch the food.
Twenty days pass. Joe and Steve are hungry and puzzled. After three more days pass without Raymond in sight, Steve starts getting restless. 'I NEED FOOD!' he says. 'NO!' Joe retorts. 'We promised.' Five more days pass. Joe realizes that Raymond probably skipped out, so the two tortoises weakly get a sandwich, and open their mouths to eat.
Right at that instant, Raymond pops out from behind a rock, and says, 'I knew it! I'm not going!

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Those of you who have been following the Church Within Sunday Services for a number of years may remember a few past Services where I drew a “Rune” at the beginning and then followed with the Quotes and the Sermon. It's been a Long time since I have done that, so I decided it might be interesting to start This Week's Service that way and see where it takes us.

Well… I drew “The Blank Rune” #25 (out of 25)…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: The Book of Runes - The Blank Rune #25)
Blank is the end, blank the beginning. This is the Rune of total trust and should be taken as exciting evidence of your most immediate contact with your own true destiny which, time and again, rises like the phoenix from the ashes of what we call fate.
The Blank Rune can portend a death. But that death is usually symbolic, and may relate to any part of your life as you are living it now. Relinquishing control is the ultimate challenge for the Spiritual Warrior.
Here the Unknowable informs you that it is in motion in your life. In that blankness is held undiluted potential. At the same time both pregnant and empty, it comprehends the totality of being, all that is to be actualized. And if, indeed, there are “matters hidden by the gods,” you need only remember: what beckons is the creative power of the unknown.
Drawing the Blank Rune brings to the surface your deepest fears: Will I fail? Will I be abandoned? Will it all be taken away? And yet your highest good, your truest possibilities and all your fertile dreams are held within that blankness.
Willingness and permitting are what this Rune requires, for how can you exercise control over what is not yet in form? The Blank Rune often calls for no less an act of courage than the empty-handed leap into the void. Drawing it is a direct test of Faith.
The Blank Rune represents the path of Karma---the sum total of your actions and of their consequences. At the same time, this Rune teaches that the very debts of old Karma shift and evolve as you shift and evolve. Nothing is predestined: The obstacles of your past can become the gateways that lead to new beginnings.
Whenever you draw the Blank Rune, take heart: Know that the work of self-change is progressing in your life.

(From: The Nashville TeaM - Ham 9/30/01)
Times of transition are very often those times of starting over. Time when your adjustment is so great that it requires a complete rethinking or new understanding of your situation and perhaps a renewed commitment to living the righteous life that the Father desires. You have, within your hearts, a direct connection to the Master's spirit, also known as the comforter, but human beings have trouble with their overwhelming emotions and it is hard to quiet the mind and the soul to receive this comfort. This is understood. But you must all know that when you are ready, when you can open your hearts to this comfort like a little child opens its arms to a parent, that that comfort will flood into your soul and renew your confidence, renew your spirit.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-34 Section-6)
The Spirit never drives, only leads. If you are a willing learner, if you want to attain spirit levels and reach divine heights, if you sincerely desire to reach the eternal goal, then the divine Spirit will gently and lovingly lead you along the pathway of sonship and spiritual progress. Every step you take must be one of willingness, intelligent and cheerful co-operation. The domination of the Spirit is never tainted with coercion nor compromised by compulsion.

(From: Ed Parker, Grandmaster - American Kenpo)
The intelligent man is one who has successfully fulfilled many accomplishments, and is yet willing to learn more.

(From: The RSV Bible - Psalm 51:10-12)
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-102 Section-8)
The highest evidence of the reality and efficacy of religion consists in the fact of human experience; namely, that man, naturally fearful and suspicious, innately endowed with a strong instinct of self-preservation and craving survival after death, is willing fully to trust the deepest interests of his present and future to the keeping and direction of that power and person designated by his faith as God. That is the one central truth of all religion. As to what that power or person requires of man in return for this watchcare and final salvation, no two religions agree; in fact, they all more or less disagree.

(From: The Dictionary - at Dictionary.com)
Willing \Will"ing\, a. 1. Free to do or to grant; having the mind inclined; not opposed in mind; not choosing to refuse; disposed; not averse; desirous; consenting; complying; ready.
Willingness \Will"ing*ness\, n. The quality or state of being willing; free choice or consent of the will; freedom from reluctance; readiness of the mind to do or forbear.

The Sermon
***********
Are you willing to believe that God wants Only the Best for You… and for All of His Children?

If you Truly have Faith in an All Loving God, then you'd pretty much Have to be willing to believe that, Wouldn't You? Do you?

Do You truly want Only what is Best for you? If so, then wouldn't it follow that You would want exactly what God wants for you… and for others?

That would have quite a few rather significant implications… don't ya Think?

Think about it.

“What do You want God? That's what I want Too!”

How much time do we spend trying to change God's mind about things when rather we should be trying to change our Own minds about things?

Silly Humans… Aren't we?

Your Will be Done! That pretty much covers All the Bases, Doesn't it?

Quotes

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 6:9-10)
Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-178 Section-1)
The consciousness of sonship with God should quicken the entire life service of every man, woman, and child who has become the possessor of such a mighty stimulus to all the inherent powers of a human personality.

(From: The KJV Bible - Mark 8:35-37)
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-178 Section-1)
This gospel of the kingdom is a living truth. I have told you it is like the leaven in the dough, like the grain of mustard seed; and now I declare that it is like the seed of the living being, which, from generation to generation, while it remains the same living seed, unfailingly unfolds itself in new manifestations and grows acceptably in channels of new adaptation to the peculiar needs and conditions of each successive generation. The revelation I have made to you is a living revelation, and I desire that it shall bear appropriate fruits in each individual and in each generation in accordance with the laws of spiritual growth, increase, and adaptative development. From generation to generation this gospel must show increasing vitality and exhibit greater depth of spiritual power. It must not be permitted to become merely a sacred memory, a mere tradition about me and the times in which we now live.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 5:16)
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

The Sermon
***********
Ya' know… I've read about many, and heard a Lot of, different definitions/doctrines/interpretations/understandings of what Really Is “The Gospel of the Kingdom.” They all, at one time or another in my life, have helped me through, or helped me along to the next phase in my life's journey.

But Now… to Me… “The Gospel of the Kingdom” is simply that: We are All God's Cherished Children and Life itself is about learning to Live like one… with All.

In a “perfect” scenario, what would “living like God's Child” be like to you? What would You act like if in every single moment you Knew for a Certainty that You were God's Own Child? Would you act any differently? Would you act the Same? Some different, some same?

KNOW, in every single moment, and for a Certainty, that You ARE God's Own Child!

Recognize it…
Believe it…
Have Faith in it…
Know it…
Live it…
Be it…
Remember it…

Nothing in the World Feels better… and That's the Truth!

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
Could You maybe help me with my memory a little bit? The Privilege and Responsibility of being Your Child is something I Never Again want to forget! And if or when I Do… be just as patient with me as You always Have been, OK? Thanks God! I Really Love You, ya Know?!!

You ALL are Within the Infinitely Loving Embrace of our Universal
Parent,

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Have you ever had one of those dreams where you suddenly have this Incredible, Life Transforming Realization… one you've been waiting for All your Life… so Simple, yet so Profound… and then you wake up and Knew you had it but now it's Gone from your memory Completely… the harder you try to remember, the further it slips away?

I have.

Don't ya Hate when that happens?

Quotes

(From: The RSV Bible - Luke 21:34-36)
"But take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a snare; for it will come upon all who dwell upon the face of the whole earth. But watch at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of man."

(From: Mahatma Gandhi)
You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 6:22-23)
"The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. "But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-155 Section-6)
Now, mistake not, my Father will ever respond to the faintest flicker of faith. He takes note of the physical and superstitious emotions of the primitive man. And with those honest but fearful souls whose faith is so weak that it amounts to little more than an intellectual conformity to a passive attitude of assent to religions of authority, the Father is ever alert to honor and foster even all such feeble attempts to reach out for him. But you who have been called out of darkness into the light are expected to believe with a whole heart; your faith shall dominate the combined attitudes of body, mind, and spirit.

(From: Jackie Mason)
By these things examine thyself. By whose rules am I acting; in whose name; in whose strength; in whose glory? What faith, humility, self-denial, and love of God and to man have there been in all my actions?

(From: Olfana - Half Moon Bay, CA TeaM)
To try again, to open yourself to the possibility of a further attempt to express yourself in ways which have previously not met with success, is great soul growth in this life!

Humor of the Week

[A few of you may have seen this joke recently… Oh Well… here it is again for those who haven't]

A man is in bed with his wife when there is a rat-a-tat-tat on the door. He rolls over and looks at his clock, and it's half past three in the morning.
"I'm not getting out of bed at this time," he thinks, and rolls over. Then, a louder knock follows.
"Aren't you going to answer that?" says his wife.
So he drags himself out of bed and goes downstairs. He opens the door and there is man standing at the door. It didn't take the homeowner long to realize the man was drunk.
"Hi there," slurs the stranger. "Can you give me a push?"
"No, get lost. It's half past three. I was in bed," says the man and he slams the door. He goes back up to bed and tells his wife what happened.
"Dave, that wasn't very nice of you," she says. "Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick the kids up from the babysitter, and you had to knock on that man's house to get us started again? What would have happened if he'd told us to get lost?"
"But the guy was drunk," says the husband.
"It doesn't matter," says the wife. "He needs our help and it would be the Christian thing to help him."
So the husband gets out of bed again, gets dressed, and goes downstairs.
He opens the door, and not being able to see the stranger anywhere, he shouts, "Hey, do you still want a push?"
And he hears a voice cry out, "Yeah, please."
So, still being unable to see the stranger, he shouts, "Where are you?"
"I'm over here," the stranger replies, "on your swing."

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

My Friend/Brother Rick and I write and produce music together on Thursday evenings over at his place (we are in the process of putting a new CD together). It has been our custom over the past few years to “flip a card” when taking breaks to the restroom (ie: there is a little wooden cradle there with over a hundred different Spiritual word/concept cards in it which we flip.) More often than not, there is an underlying “message” that the flipped word cards reveal as the evening progresses. This last Thursday, the words that came up hit me as rather Significant, so I am sharing them here.
The 4 words, in order, were: Endearing, Gift, Deliberate, Goodness…

Quotes

(From: Albert Einstein)
The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me with the joy of living are goodness, beauty, and truth.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-150 Section-5)
“Salvation is the gift of God, and righteousness is the natural fruit of the spirit-born life of sonship in the kingdom. You are not to be saved because you live a righteous life; rather is it that you live a righteous life because you have already been saved, have recognized sonship as the gift of God and service in the kingdom as the supreme delight of life on earth.”

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 7:17-21)
So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will know them by their fruits.

(From: Solonia - North Idaho TeaM 10/14/01)
Your best approach is to be the initiator, the promoter, of goodness and beauty and truth.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 5:16)
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-193 Section-2)
Salvation is the free gift of God, but those who are born of the spirit will immediately begin to show forth the fruits of the spirit in loving service to their fellow creatures. And the fruits of the divine spirit which are yielded in the lives of spirit-born and God-knowing mortals are: loving service, unselfish devotion, courageous loyalty, sincere fairness, enlightened honesty, undying hope, confiding trust, merciful ministry, unfailing goodness, forgiving tolerance, and enduring peace.

(From: Euripides [485BC - 406BC])
When good men die their goodness does not perish, but lives though they are gone. As for the bad, all that was theirs dies and is buried with them.

(From: Henry David Thoreau)
Goodness is the only investment that never fails.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
“Deliberate Goodness” is an “Endearing Gift.”

Do you ever wonder what it was that so endeared the common people to Jesus… why they Loved him so much? I believe it was because he walked with them… because he talked with them… because he laughed with them… because he Lived with them. Jesus was a Friend to them. He Loved Them for who they were. He Cared about them. He was Good to them. He always gave each individual the Endearing Gift of his Deliberate Goodness. Jesus didn't REACT to situations or to people, he Acted… Deliberately… and Always out of Love. The common person Loved Jesus for his Goodness.

When I was young, I used to confuse being Good with being Pious/Sanctimonious. I thought being Good all the time meant I had to be Pious all the time. Silly youth. It took me a long time to realize that being Good meant being Loving, Caring, Compassionate… being a Friend.

I hate it when I react without thinking, don't you? I'm not talking about reflex actions here, those can be valuable to our individual safety. No, I'm talking about reactions to people… reacting without even thinking about it. The reaction is practically unconscious and typically negative. Don't ya Hate that? It's So Easy for those situations to get out of control, to get caught up in them, and to go places that you had No Intention of going in the first place. Reaction leads to reaction to reaction to reaction and so on. They can get rather difficult to resolve, can't they? It takes a Conscious Act of Deliberate Goodness to defuse such a situation. It probably would have been better with a Conscious Act of Deliberate Goodness in the First place, don't ya think?

Be Deliberately Good.
Do Good On purpose and For a Purpose.
Do it for Yourself; Do it for Others; Do it for God.
Don't do it because you Should… do it because you Want to… Do it because it Feels Good.

Talk to you later… Be Good now.
