Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

This morning I was thinking it would be fun to take the negative commands of The Ten Commandments and make Positive suggestions/statements that say the same thing… but then I remembered that Jesus had already done that quite satisfactorily with his Two Greatest Commandments:
And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets."
(Matthew 22:37-40)

So instead…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #467, is “by any other name”…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
When I was very, very young, I needed to be told what not to do. Heck, I was very, very young… I had no experience to speak of, so I didn't Know what not to do.

When I was a little older, I had a somewhat better concept of “what not to do” (not… that I had yet attained the experiential wisdom to always not do them), so, it was somewhat more valuable for me to be told what kind of things were good To do.

In my teen years I knew everything already, so I hated being told “what To do” just about equally as much as being told “what Not to do.” It was also about this time that I first came to the conclusion that unasked for advice was seemingly inevitable and entirely repugnant… often the inspiration for a certain rebelliousness.

In early adulthood I began learning that it was OK to Ask for advice and, to make up my own mind regarding whether or not to apply the advice.

Around a decade later, I wanted to be the one giving advice (asked for or not)… truly a difficult addiction to overcome.

At some point later in life it came to me that logically if I didn't like Getting unasked for advice, then in all consistency I shouldn't Give it Either.

Now when it comes to advice, I try very hard not to give it unasked for… and try even harder not to Resent it as much when it is given to Me unasked for. After all… advice isn't a command, it's only an alternate suggestion, Right?

The Most Reliable Advice comes from God, and you know what? God Never gives me advice about what You should do… Only about what I should do. Go Figure!

The key to every man is his thought. Sturdy and defying though he look, he has a helm which he obeys, which is the idea after which all his facts are classified. He can only be reformed by showing him a new idea which commands his own.

(From: John Fletcher (1579 - 1625)
Man is his own star and the soul that can render an honest and perfect man commands all light, all influence, all fate.

(From: George Washington Carver)
When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.

The great masses of the people... will more easily fall victims to a great lie than to a small one.

(From: Alexander Pope (1688 - 1744)
He who tells a lie is not sensible of how great a task he undertakes; for he must be forced to invent twenty more to maintain that one.

(From: Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 - 1945)
Repetition does not transform a lie into a truth.

(From: Duchess de Abrantes)
Prejudice squints when it looks, and lies when it talks.

(From: Carl G. Jung)
Observance of customs and laws can very easily be a cloak for a lie so subtle that our fellow human beings are unable to detect it. It may help us to escape all criticism, we may even be able to deceive ourselves in the belief of our obvious righteousness. But deep down, below the surface of the average man's conscience, he hears a voice whispering, "There is something not right," no matter how much his rightness is supported by public opinion or by the moral code.

(From: Karl Kraus (1874 - 1936)
How is the world ruled and how do wars start? Diplomats tell lies to journalists and then believe what they read.

(From: George Orwell (1903 - 1950)
Political language. . . is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.

(From: The RSV Bible - Psalm 4:2)
O men, how long shall my honor suffer shame? How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies?

(From: Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (1841 - 1935)
Sin has many tools, but a lie is the handle which fits them all.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-194 Section-3)
Many things which happen in the course of a human life are hard to understand, difficult to reconcile with the idea that this is a universe in which truth prevails and in which righteousness triumphs. It so often appears that slander, lies, dishonesty, and unrighteousness--sin--prevail. Does faith, after all, triumph over evil, sin, and iniquity? It does.

(From: Sovereign)
I must stand up in search of the truth, if I don't I only roll with the flow of the lie and make it stronger.

(From: Arthur Calwell)
It is better to be defeated on principle than to win on lies.

(From: Alfred Alder)
A lie would have no sense unless the truth were felt as dangerous.

(From: J. D. Higgins)
'Tis better to hear a truth which brings a tear, than a lie which brings a smile.

(From: Dag Hammarskjold (1905 - 1961)
A successful lie is doubly a lie; an error which has to be corrected is a heavier burden than the truth.

(From: Plato (427 BC - 347 BC)
Those who are able to see beyond the shadows and lies of their culture will never be understood, let alone believed, by the masses.

(From: Mark Twain)
You can't pray a lie.

(From: John F. Kennedy (1917 - 1963)
The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie -- deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.

(From: Thomas Carlyle (1795 - 1881)
Popular opinion is the greatest lie in the world.

(From: Austin O'Malley)
Those that think it permissible to tell white lies soon grow color blind.

(From: Carolyn Wells)
Actions lie louder than words.

(From: Ham 3/7/2004 – the Nashville TeaM)
When you begin to believe the distortion, you are willingly putting yourself in bondage to that lie. And so gradually the whole personality comes to be in service to that lie.
The only way to break free of these kinds of spiritual bondage is to seek after truth no matter what the consequences are to one's own ego. Human beings are usually looking for anything that will bolster the lie rather than taking the courageous step toward truth.

(From: Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (1841 - 1935)
I have a higher and grander standard of principle than George Washington. He could not lie; I can, but I won't.

(From: The RSV Bible - Colossians 3:9-10)
Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

(From: Ham 3/10/2002 – the Nashville TeaM)
Fear is vanquished by facing that thing which creates fear and seeing it for the lie that it is. Fear is vanquished by truth. It is truth that must be embraced and then fear has no power. When you embrace reality then unreality has no power. But, should you in moments of weakness embrace unreality, you give fear power. Fear has no power but that which you give it.

(From: Lyman Beecher (1775 - 1863)
Never chase a lie. Let it alone, and it will run itself to death.

I'd like to end today's Sermon with an old church song that's familiar to many. Sing along if you know the melody…

Let… there… be Truth on Earth,
and let it begin, with me.

(OK… ok… so that's not the real words to the song… but they Are equally appropriate. Don't you think?)

A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a Harley when he spotted a well-known heart surgeon in his shop. The surgeon was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey Doc, can I ask you a question?"

The surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I get such a small salary and you get the really big bucks, when you and I are doing basically the same work?"

The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over, and whispered to the mechanic, "Try doing it with the engine running."

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-11 3 Section-2)
The angels really find it hard to understand why you will so persistently allow your higher intellectual powers, even your religious faith, to be so dominated by fear, so thoroughly demoralized by the thoughtless panic of dread and anxiety.

(From: Herodotus (484 BC - 430 BC)
If a man insisted always on being serious, and never allowed himself a bit of fun and relaxation, he would go mad or become unstable without knowing it.

(From: H. G. Wells (1866 – 1946)
We must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind us to the fact that each moment of life is a miracle and mystery.

(From: John C. Maxwell)
Never allow others to put obstacles in the pathway of your dreams.

(From: Aldous Huxley (1894 - 1963)
From their experience or from the recorded experience of others (history), men learn only what their passions and their metaphysical prejudices allow them to learn.

(From: Oprah Winfrey)
I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.

(From: Shakti Gawain)
We will discover the nature of our particular genius when we stop trying to conform to our own or to other peoples' models, learn to be ourselves, and allow our natural channel to open.

(From: Maude (Ruth Gordon), from the movie "Harold & Maude")
I believe that much of the world's sorrow is caused by people who are this, but allow themselves to be treated like that.

(From: Og Mandino)
I will not allow yesterday's success to lull me into today's complacency, for this is the great foundation of failure.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-157 Section-2)
Be only concerned with the spirit of living truth and the power of true religion. It is not the fear of a dead religion that will save you but rather your faith in a living experience in the spiritual realities of the kingdom. Do not allow yourselves to become blinded by prejudice and paralyzed by fear. Neither permit reverence for the traditions so to pervert your understanding that your eyes see not and your ears hear not. It is not the purpose of true religion merely to bring peace but rather to insure progress. And there can be no peace in the heart or progress in the mind unless you fall wholeheartedly in love with truth, the ideals of eternal realities.

(From: Ham 4/25/2004 – the Nashville TeaM)
Love is the catalyst for change and true spiritual progress is attained through and measured by love. Love is the yardstick by which you may measure your growth. Growth is created first by forming the intention to grow, then by allowing spiritual change to take place within you, and thirdly by manifesting that love toward others. Spiritual growth and increasing portions of love are one and the same.

A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it closely. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages.

"Momma, look what I found," the boy called out.

"What have you got there, dear?" his mother asked.

With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered: "I think it's Adam's suit!"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Today, October 23rd 2005, is the 10th Anniversary of the Incorporation of The Church Within as a 501C3 Non-Profit Corporation. Sometimes it seems like a Lot less time has passed than that... other times it seems like a lot More. Man, are we Lucky to still Be here? (Or is it something else?)

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #470, is “Luck” and “The Gift of Grace”…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
It is Truly said that, in every problem, difficulty, tribulation, there is waiting to be discovered, a Gift… a Gift of Grace.

Have you ever said, “Boy, was I ever Lucky to get out of That one!”?

Yeah… me Neither!
But if I Had… I might look back upon it now in retrospect and realize, “Now That… was a providential Gift of Grace!”

Or perhaps you've said something like… “That was the Luckiest thing that has ever Happened to me!” Sure… sure… we All have Right? <g>

So… when you Say something like that… do you ever consider that maybe… just perhaps now… that it may possibly have been “The Gift of Grace” (rather than “luck”), that you had inadvertently found amidst the thorny brambles of a “problem/difficulty/tribulation” that you once thought you had???

In my own life experiences so far---well, at least in the last 13-14 years or so---I have more consistently found that when something seems Irritating/Frustrating/Unbearable to me, it is essentially (invariably?), because of some one or more vital aspects of a “Life Lesson” that I am in need of learning (or perhaps grasping on another level---in another area of my life that I haven't fully dealt with yet). [It Sucks while it's in the process of happening, doesn't it?]

I've often wondered, “Why do old problems, that I Know I've already solved, come back up to haunt me in seemingly different situations?” “What do you MEAN I've only solved Part of the problem?” Just being able to Laugh at myself when I catch myself saying, “Oh, I've already learned THAT One!” or “I Finally GOT it!” often is in itself, a “Gift of Grace” if not also of Wisdom.

That being said… discovery/acceptance of “The Gift” has essentially turned out to be a Solution to my Problem… or more accurately… that Part of the problem that I am capable of solving at my current stage of personal Spiritual growth. At times, the Gift turns out to be nothing more than a previously unseen pathway that leads to what look as if it may be another problem altogether. I've experienced that likely it is just another part of the same problem… but a Crucial Part to solve if I really desire true Resolution The Gift in these instances is always substantial if I persevere long enough to discover it.

What appears to be “Good Luck” doesn't always turn out to be good luck after all, and what might appear to be “Bad Luck” sometimes turns out to be “Good Luck.” Go Figure! A Gift of Grace though… is always just that. You know it when you Feel it. You've heard it said, “It's better to be Lucky than Good.”? Well… I disagree… when you're Good, there's a Lot more opportunities for being Lucky (translate: for receiving Grace).

Though there is truly a “Gift of Grace” in every problem, it doesn't mean that a “Gift of Grace” is Only found in problems and adversity. The “Gift of Grace” is Always available to the receptive Soul…. in Every Moment of Every Day. Goodness reveals it. Goodness gives access to it. Goodness Attracts it. Goodness is a “Grace” magnet.

Grace always seems to me to be “Food for the Soul.” I've heard it said that “God feeds all the birds of the air… but He doesn't throw it into their nest for them.” I Like that one. It's a lot like Grace I think. It's out there ready to find, but God's not going to throw it into my Soul for me… I've got to make the personal effort to go out and find it…. and I've Got to be Good.

Have a Good Week!

It's hard to detect good luck - it looks so much like something you've earned.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-150 Section-9)
The transformations of grace are wrought in response to the living faith of those who are the beneficiaries."

(From: Garrison Keillor)
Some luck lies in not getting what you thought you wanted but getting what you have, which once you have got it you may be smart enough to see, is what you would have wanted had you known.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-118 Section-10)
Most of what a mortal would call providential is not; his judgment of such matters is very handicapped by lack of farsighted vision into the true meanings of the circumstances of life. Much of what a mortal would call good luck might really be bad luck; the smile of fortune that bestows unearned leisure and undeserved wealth may be the greatest of human afflictions; the apparent cruelty of a perverse fate that heaps tribulation upon some suffering mortal may in reality be the tempering fire that is transmuting the soft iron of immature personality into the tempered steel of real character.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 12:6-18)
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; never be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.

(From: Machiventa - 10/16/05 – The North Idaho TeaM)
This is our opportunity to manifest the grace that we have been given at this time. This is our chance to unfold what the miracle of faith can provide. This is our opportunity to prove that even through the darkness or the fog of this existence we may find our way.

(From: Frederick Buechner)
The grace of God means something like: Here is your life. You might never have been, but you are because the party wouldn't have been complete without you. Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid. I am with you. Nothing can ever separate us. It's for you I created the universe. I love you. There's only one catch. Like any other gift, the gift of grace can be yours only if you'll reach out and take it. Maybe being able to reach out and take it is a gift too.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-144 Section-4)
No child has aught to do with earning the status of son or daughter. The earth child comes into being by the will of its parents. Even so, the child of God comes into grace and the new life of the spirit by the will of the Father in heaven. Therefore must the kingdom of heaven--divine sonship--be received as by a little child. You earn righteousness--progressive character development--but you receive sonship by grace and through faith.

(From: Machiventa - 10/16/05 – The North Idaho TeaM)
You have witnessed in your own lives that you are experiencing an uncertainty and instability about your footing in your lives, being forced to retreat from some of your comfort zones and advance to islands of stability that make themselves present around you.

(From: Machiventa - 10/16/05 – The North Idaho TeaM)
The patterns that you are so accustomed to and used to in your lives may come into question, indeed, will come into question, and your more traditional methods must be reexamined in light of your new understanding and as a result of this pressure from outside. In fact, this pressure is from inside, and it is filling your vessel and squeezing out that which does not serve you in your upcoming ascension.

(From: Reinhold Niebuhr (1892 - 1971), from a sermon in 1943)
God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things which should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.

(From: Denis Waitley)
Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Well, well, well… just after I hit the dreaded “Send” button last Sunday, I realized that it was the 10
th Anniversary of The Church Within. That's right, October 23rd 1995, The Church Within officially became a 501c3 Non-Profit Church. It's hard to believe that our Church is 10 years old already… though sometimes it's difficult for me to grasp that it's Only been 10 years (seems like the better part of a lifetime).

I remember back then, so wanting to re-define the meaning of the word “Church” as “not a place to Go once a week” but, rather, that place in the Soul that defines and molds how one acts Every day of the week. Funny… I Still want to do that ten years later (I guess it's not one of those overnight ventures. ;-) I was So frustrated with how so Many “Churches” had become places of “Theology” and “Doctrine” built upon a foundation of Fear and Separatism… rather than places of Personal Religious Experience and Wholehearted Worship built upon a foundation of Love and Universal Brotherhood.

My frustrations about that haven't abated all that much in 10 years… but then… neither have my Hopes or my personal Determination. We shall just have to wait and see what the Next 10 years has in store for us.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #471, is Renewal…

Quotes
*******

(From: Shana Alexander)
We strain to renew our capacity for wonder, to shock ourselves into astonishment once again.

(From: Susan Taylor)
We need quiet time to examine our lives openly and honestly. . . spending quiet time alone gives your mind an opportunity to renew itself and create order.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-156 Section-5)
Kingdom believers should possess an implicit faith, a whole-souled belief, in the certain triumph of righteousness. Kingdom builders must be undoubting of the truth of the gospel of eternal salvation. Believers must increasingly learn how to step aside from the rush of life--escape the harassments of material existence--while they refresh the soul, inspire the mind, and renew the spirit by worshipful communion.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 12:2)
Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

(From: Pearl Buck (1892 - 1973)
Inside myself is a place where I live all alone and that's where you renew your springs that never dry up.

(From: The RSV Bible - Corinthians II 4:16-18)
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed every day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, because we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-160 Section-2)
Isolation tends to exhaust the energy charge of the soul. Association with one's fellows is essential to the renewal of the zest for life and is indispensable to the maintenance of the courage to fight those battles consequent upon the ascent to the higher levels of human living. Friendship enhances the joys and glorifies the triumphs of life. Loving and intimate human associations tend to rob suffering of its sorrow and hardship of much of its bitterness. The presence of a friend enhances all beauty and exalts every goodness. By intelligent symbols man is able to quicken and enlarge the appreciative capacities of his friends. One of the crowning glories of human friendship is this power and possibility of the mutual stimulation of the imagination. Great spiritual power is inherent in the consciousness of wholehearted devotion to a common cause, mutual loyalty to a cosmic Deity.

(From: Audrey Hepburn)
People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-147 Section-8)
The Father rather desires that you draw out your heart to the hungry, and that you minister to the afflicted souls; then shall your light shine in obscurity, and even your darkness shall be as the noonday. Then shall the Lord guide you continually, satisfying your soul and renewing your strength. You shall become like a watered garden, like a spring whose waters fail not. And they who do these things shall restore the wasted glories; they shall raise up the foundations of many generations; they shall be called the rebuilders of broken walls, the restorers of safe paths in which to dwell.'"

(From: Jane E. Brody)
Turn your midlife crisis to your own advantage by making it a time for renewal of your body and mind, rather than stand by helplessly and watch them decline.

(From: Deepak Chopra, The Path to Love)
The spiritual meaning of love is measured by what it can do. Love is meant to heal. Love is meant to renew. Love is meant to bring us closer to God.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-34 Section-6)
The divine Spirit is the source of continual ministry and encouragement to the children of men. Your power and achievement is "according to his mercy, through the renewing of the Spirit." Spiritual life, like physical energy, is consumed. Spiritual effort results in relative spiritual exhaustion. The whole ascendant experience is real as well as spiritual; therefore, it is truly written, "It is the Spirit that quickens." "The Spirit gives life."

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #39)
In harmony with the Tao,
the sky is clear and spacious,
the earth is solid and full,
all creature flourish together,
content with the way they are,
endlessly repeating themselves,
endlessly renewed.

The Sermon
***********
The opposite of Renewal is Decay.
Renewal allows one to…

Reactivate,
Readjust,
Realign,
Readjust,
Reaffirm,
Rearrange,
Reassign,
Reassure,
Reawaken,
Recapture,
Recharge,
Reconnect,
Recuperate,
Rededicate,
Redefine,
Rediscover,
Refine,
Reform,
Regenerate,
Reinforce,
Reinterpret,
Rejuvenate,
Rekindle,
Relearn,
Remake,
Remotivate,
Reorganize,
Restore,
Revitalize,
Revive…

…their Attitude, Beliefs, Dedication, Determination, Hope, Faith, Relationship, Friendship, Love… Everything in fact, that has Real Lasting Value in Life.

We never really have to radically “Change” anything about ourselves… if we are willing to consciously Allow Renewal. Change is a replacement… Renewal is an adjustment.

Renewal of Perspective is the Fertile Soil for the Growth of Wisdom.

Allow Renewal.
