Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I'd bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time!

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within. You are the Temple. You are the Congregation. Any and All Truth is the Gospel. The Divine Spirit within you is your True Minister.

Does it ever feel like you have no options…
like everything seems to be decided for you already…
and you weren't even asked?
Me neither…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #780, is Choosing…

Quotes

(From:
J. Martin Kohe)
The greatest power that a person possesses is the power to choose.

(From: Stephenie Meyer, Twilight, 2005)
Just because we've been dealt a certain hand, it doesn't mean that we can't choose to rise above - to conquer the boundaries of a destiny that none of us wanted. To try to retain whatever essential humanity we can.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-163 Section-2)
Men must arrive at their own decisions. There is a certain range of the freedom of choice which mortals may exercise. The forces of the spiritual world will not coerce man; they allow him to go the way of his own choosing.

(From: Hunter S. Thompson (1939 - 2005), The Proud Highway)
A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance.

(From: John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873), On Liberty, 1859)
He who lets the world, or his own portion of it, choose his plan of life for him, has no need of any other faculty than the ape-like one of imitation. He who chooses his plan for himself, employs all his faculties. He must use observation to see, reasoning and judgment to foresee, activity to gather materials for decision, discrimination to decide, and when he has decided, firmness and self-control to hold to his deliberate decision.

(From: Hasidic Saying)
Everyone should carefully observe which way his heart draws him, and then choose that way with all his strength.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-16 Section-7)
In the day-by-day life of mortal man, virtue is realized by the consistent choosing of good rather than evil, and such choosing ability is evidence of the possession of a moral nature.

(From: Pythagoras (582 BC - 507 BC)
Choose rather to be strong of soul than strong of body.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-130 Section-1)
“Evil is the immature choosing and the unthinking misstep of those who are resistant to goodness, rejectful of beauty, and disloyal to truth. Evil is only the misadaptation of immaturity or the disruptive and distorting influence of ignorance. Evil is the inevitable darkness which follows upon the heels of the unwise rejection of light.”

(From: Dr. Phillip McGraw)
When you choose the behavior, you choose the consequences.

(From: Oprah Winfrey)
Understand that the right to choose your own path is a sacred privilege. Use it. Dwell in possibility.

(From: Wayne Dyer)
Love is the ability and willingness to allow those that you care for to be what they choose for themselves without any insistence that they satisfy you.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-4)
Religious living is devoted living, and devoted living is creative living, original and spontaneous. New religious insights arise out of conflicts which initiate the choosing of new and better reaction habits in the place of older and inferior reaction patterns.

(From: Yann Martel, Life of Pi)
To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-140 Section-8)
The Master came to create in man a new spirit, a new will — to impart a new capacity for knowing the truth, experiencing compassion, and choosing goodness — the will to be in harmony with God's will, coupled with the eternal urge to become perfect, even as the Father in heaven is perfect.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-111 Section-5)
This choosing of the Father's will is the spiritual finding of the spirit Father by mortal man, even though an age must pass before the creature son may actually stand in the factual presence of God on Paradise. This choosing does not so much consist in the negation of creature will — “Not my will but yours be done” — as it consists in the creature's positive affirmation: “It is my will that your will be done.”

(From: Carl Schurz (1829 - 1906)
Ideals are like stars: you will not succeed in touching them with your hands, but like the seafaring man on the ocean desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them, you reach your destiny.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-130 Section-2)
The will of man is the way of man, the sum and substance of that which the mortal chooses to be and do. Will is the deliberate choice of a self-conscious being which leads to decision-conduct based on intelligent reflection.

(From:
Lois McMaster Bujold, "Memory", 1996)

His mother had often said, When you choose an action, you choose the consequences of that action. She had emphasized the corollary of this axiom even more vehemently: when you desired a consequence you had damned well better take the action that would create it.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-132 Section-2)
The possibility of evil is necessary to moral choosing, but not the actuality thereof. A shadow is only relatively real. Actual evil is not necessary as a personal experience. Potential evil acts equally well as a decision stimulus in the realms of moral progress on the lower levels of spiritual development. Evil becomes a reality of personal experience only when a moral mind makes evil its choice.

(From: Sidney Madwed)
You can choose to be happy or sad and whichever you choose that is what you get. No one is really responsible to make someone else happy, no matter what most people have been taught and accept as true.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-16 Section-7)
Man's choosing between good and evil is influenced, not only by the keenness of his moral nature, but also by such influences as ignorance, immaturity, and delusion.

(From: Jane Austen (1775 - 1817), Mansfield Park)
Everybody likes to go their own way--to choose their own time and manner of devotion.

(From: The Book of Runes - #6 - Initiation/Something Hidden/A Secret Matter (Perth)
You may feel overwhelmed with exhaustion from meeting obstruction upon obstruction in your passage. Yet you always have a choice: you can see all this apparent negativity as “bad luck” or you can recognize it as an obstacle course, a challenge specific to the initiation you are presently undergoing. Then each setback, each humiliation, becomes a test of character. When your inner being is shifting and reforming on a deep level, patience, constancy and perseverance are called for. So stay centered, see the humor, and keep on keeping on.

(From: Bell Hooks)
The moment we choose to love we begin to move towards freedom...

Quotes

(From:
Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719), 1712)
Our imagination loves to be filled with an object or to grasp at anything that is too big for it's capacity. We are flung into a pleasing astonishment at such unbounded views and feel a delightful stillness and amazement in the soul at the apprehension of them.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-148 Section-6)
“No more shall suffering mortals be denied the comfort of knowing the love of God and understanding the mercy of the Father in heaven. While the speech of God spoken from the whirlwind was a majestic concept for the day of its utterance, you have already learned that the Father does not thus reveal himself, but rather that he speaks within the human heart as a still, small voice, saying, 'This is the way; walk therein.' Do you not comprehend that God dwells within you, that he has become what you are that he may make you what he is!”

(From: Thomas a Kempis (1380 - 1471)
Watch for good times to retreat into yourself. Frequently meditate on how good God is to you.

(From: The RSV Bible - Psalm 37:7)
Be still before the LORD, and wait patiently for him;

OK… Let's start today's Service with a bit of personal Stillness.

Let your body relax.

Let your Mind relax

In your stillness, contemplate about who God is to You for a few minutes.

Then Listen Intently…

Dear God,
It is in the Stillness that I can hear Your “still small voice.” When I hear judgment and reproach, I know that it is my ego. When I hear Loving Encouragement, I know that it is You. I want You always in, and a part of my life.

It seems far easier to feel it than to show it…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #782, is Appreciation…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
What Does Appreciation look like Anyway? And… When actually does Appreciation really Happen?

Everyone to a greater or lesser degree, knows what Appreciation Feels like… whether it is felt From or, For another. It feels rather good… Great actually… Extraordinary even. It is difficult to find complete agreement with another however, as to what it actually Looks like… or should look like. Well… we do not all Appreciate the same things or, Appreciate things for the same reasons, or in the same way. Truly we each Appreciate many Different things… it is a part of our individuality, our Uniqueness, of who we Are. But then… one can sincerely Appreciate another person without necessarily Appreciating the same things as that person, can they not?

Now as to When the initial instant of Appreciation takes place… it is my own experience that I tend to Appreciate many things more often in retrospect than in the moment… not intentionally, just in reality. I don't know if that is common or unusual. It is normal for me. Do you Appreciate some things more after you think about them for a bit? Do you sometimes not Appreciate things at All until after you have reflected upon them?

Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish genuine Appreciation when it is aimed at ourselves… Dare I say Oftentimes? It is hardly rare for a human being to experience moments of feeling under appreciated… even Unappreciated. Wouldn't you say? Everyone feels that from time to time, more or less. Why is that do you think? Is there truly so little Appreciation that others feel for us or… could it be perhaps that we just do not recognize it or… maybe it just doesn't coincide with our expectations of what Appreciation ought to look like? Or maybe we wish we were Appreciated for specific things by certain people… they might show their Appreciation for Other things but not That one. Maybe it isn't something that they won't Appreciate, but something they are unable to Appreciate through no fault of their own.

Perhaps I am unable to Appreciate everything… bit I can and Do appreciate You!

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-91 Section-8)
God answers man's prayer by giving him an increased revelation of truth, an enhanced appreciation of beauty, and an augmented concept of goodness.

(From: Anne-Sophie Swetchine)
Providence has hidden a charm in difficult undertakings which is appreciated only by those who dare to grapple with them.

(From: Al Franken, "Oh, the Things I Know")
Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.

(From: Kanye West)
If you have the opportunity to play this game of life you need to appreciate every moment. A lot of people don't appreciate the moment until it's passed.

(From: George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950), Pygmalion)
If you can't appreciate what you've got, then you had better get what you can appreciate.

(From: Barbra Streisand)
Imagine how boring life would be if we were all the same. My idea of a perfect world is one in which we appreciate each other's differences; one in which we are all equal but definitely not the same.

(From: Thomas Hughes)
Blessed are they who have the gift of making friends, for it is one of God's best gifts. It involves many things, but above all, the power of going out of one's self, and appreciating whatever is noble and loving in another.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-160 Section-2)
Many noble human impulses die because there is no one to hear their expression. Truly, it is not good for man to be alone. Some degree of recognition and a certain amount of appreciation are essential to the development of human character.

(From: Margaret Cousins)
Appreciation can make a day, even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary.

(From: William Dean Howells)
I know, indeed, of nothing more subtly satisfying and cheering than a knowledge of the real good will and appreciation of others. Such happiness does not come with money, nor does it flow from fine physical state. It cannot be brought. But it is the keenest joy, after all; and the toiler's truest and best reward.

(From: Christiane Northrup, M.D.)
Feeling grateful to or appreciative of someone or something in your life actually attracts more of the things that you appreciate and value into your life.

(From: Voltaire (1694 - 1778)
Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.

(From: Dale Carnegie)
You have it easily in your power to increase the sum total of this world's happiness now. How? By giving a few words of sincere appreciation to someone who is lonely or is discouraged. Perhaps you will forget tomorrow the kind words you say today, but the recipient may cherish them over a lifetime.

There is a certain majesty in simplicity which is far above all the quaintness of wit.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-155 Section-6)
Many of your brethren have minds which accept the theory of God while they spiritually fail to realize the presence of God. And that is just the reason why I have so often taught you that the kingdom of heaven can best be realized by acquiring the spiritual attitude of a sincere child. It is not the mental immaturity of the child that I commend to you but rather the spiritual simplicity of such an easy-believing and fully-trusting little one. It is not so important that you should know about the fact of God as that you should increasingly grow in the ability to feel the presence of God.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #784, is Perseverance…

Quotes
*******
(From: Will 9/14/93– the Tallahassee TeaM)
Today I will talk about perseverance. Most things easily come by are not worth much more than the time spent attaining them. More to the point, if something is worthy of our attainment, it is also worthy of our investment of time.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-115 Section-7)
All this must be according to the Father's plan, which has predicated finite progress upon effort, creature achievement upon perseverance, and personality development upon faith.

(From: The Book of Runes - #6 - Initiation / Something Hidden /A Secret Matter)
(Reversed)

You may feel overwhelmed with exhaustion from meeting obstruction upon obstruction in your passage. Yet you always have a choice: you can see all this apparent negativity as “bad luck” or you can recognize it as an obstacle course, a challenge specific to the initiation you are presently undergoing. Then each setback, each humiliation, becomes a test of character. When your inner being is shifting and reforming on a deep level, patience, constancy and perseverance are called for. So stay centered, see the humor, and keep on keeping on.

(From: Ham 1/27/92 – the Woods Cross TeaM)
Keep your head above water by keeping the goal of your life in focus. It will invariably lead you to higher ground. Keep the attitude of perseverance and steadfastness in your life's reaction patterns. Doubt not the rewards of faith and loyalty, and trust in your inner guidance always.

(From: Mark Twain (1835 - 1910)
The miracle, or the power, that elevates the few is to be found in their industry, application, and perseverance under the prompting of a brave, determined spirit.

(From: Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719)
If you wish success in life, make perseverance your bosom friend, experience your wise counselor, caution your elder brother and hope your guardian genius.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-131 Section-3)
While faith is the energy of the better life, nevertheless, must you work out your own salvation with perseverance. If you would be certain of your final salvation, then make sure that you sincerely seek to fulfill all righteousness. Cultivate the assurance of the heart which springs from within and thus come to enjoy the ecstasy of eternal salvation.

(From: John Quincy Adams (1767 - 1848)
Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.

(From: The ASB Bible - Romans 5:3-5)
And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

(From: Joseph J. Lamb)
The road to success leads through the valley of humility, and the path is up the ladder of patience and across the wide barren plains of perseverance. As yet, no short cut has ever been discovered.

(From: The ASB Bible - Luke 8:14-15)
"The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity. "But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.

(From:
Sidney Madwed)

If you want to be truly successful invest in yourself to get the knowledge you need to find your unique factor. When you find it and focus on it and persevere your success will blossom.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-192 Section-2)
Then said Jesus: “If you would serve me, serve my brethren in the flesh even as I have served you. And be not weary in this well-doing but persevere as one who has been ordained by God for this service of love.

(From: Christopher Reeve)
I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.

(From: Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784)
Few things are impossible to diligence and skill. Great works are performed not by strength, but perseverance.

(From: Marie Curie (1867 - 1934)
Life is not easy for any of us, but what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted in something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained.

(From: Ham 11/8/98 – the Nashville TeaM)
Everyone has a level of both patience and a capacity for perseverance that increases with spiritual growth. The immature personality cannot exhibit patience for very long nor can he or she derive satisfaction from perseverance at all. The mature person, on the contrary, has seemingly boundless patience and endless capacity to persevere for the righteous cause in the face of adversity.
The person who is working toward a greater, more profound righteousness knows that he or she is on the side of reality and the overall trend of the universe, even the march of history, and this person is un-dissuaded by the seeming realities of overwhelming odds. When you stand on the side of goodness, truth, and beauty, on the side of increasing compassion and expanded realization of humanity's brotherhood, then you cannot fail. This is a fact and it is also the truth.

(From: Dorothee Deluzy)
Perseverance and audacity generally win.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
In the Attainment of Personal Growth, there is no tool more essential than Perseverance.
If there is something about yourself you wish to change… Persevere.
Difficulties and setbacks are inevitable… Persevere.
If the goal seems out of reach… Persevere.
When you make mistakes… Persevere.
Can't seem to get ahead… Persevere.

Three steps forward and two steps backward is still progress.
Persevere.
