Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within. You are the Temple. You are the Congregation. Any and All Truth is the Gospel. The Divine Spirit within you is your True Minister.

Where would you be without yours...

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #885, is Belief(s)…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Many a Sunday Service I have done over the years on Faith and... it's being Far Superior to mere Beliefs. I do this mostly for the reason that so Many people think that their Faith IS their Beliefs or their “brand” of church. Faith and Belief cannot really Be compared since they are such totally different things. They are Both Good... they are Both Necessary!

Beliefs can be wholly true or entirely false... mostly true or mostly false... partly true and partly false. Our Beliefs can Inspire us to want to be and do better... they can Challenge us to go forward instead of standing still... they can replace apathy with Passion. Let your Beliefs do that for you! Beliefs are the building blocks that make Saving Faith Possible!

Beliefs are a Great thing to have! Nurture them...
Cherish yours and allow others to enjoy their own.

Don't hold so tightly to your Beliefs that they bind you up and prevent your personal growth. Test them... act as if they are real. If you discover that they are not, let them go... others will surely take their place.
If you find that they Are...
Live by them!

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-155 Section-6)
The religions of authority can only divide men and set them in conscientious array against each other; the religion of the spirit will progressively draw men together and cause them to become understandingly sympathetic with one another. The religions of authority require of men uniformity in belief, but this is impossible of realization in the present state of the world. The religion of the spirit requires only unity of experience--uniformity of destiny--making full allowance for diversity of belief.

(From: The ASB Bible - Matthew 8:13)
"Go; it shall be done for you as you have believed."

(From: Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948 )
Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #30 )
The Master does his job and then stops.
He understands that the universe is forever out of control,
and that trying to dominate events goes against the current of the Tao.
Because he believes in himself, he doesn't try to convince others.
Because he is content with himself, he doesn't need others' approval.
Because he accepts himself, the whole world accepts him.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-156 Section-5)
Believers must increasingly learn how to step aside from the rush of life--escape the harassments of material existence--while they refresh the soul, inspire the mind, and renew the spirit by worshipful communion.

(From: Richard Dawkins )
Religion is about turning untested belief into unshakeable truth...

(From: Bertrand Russell (1872 - 1970 )
Man is a credulous animal, and must believe something; in the absence of good grounds for belief, he will be satisfied with bad ones.

(From: Mark Twain (1835 - 1910 )
In religion and politics, people's beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second hand, and without examination.

(From: Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742 - 1799 )
With most men, unbelief in one thing springs from blind belief in another.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-170 Section-3)
Though Jesus taught that faith, simple childlike belief, is the key to the door of the kingdom, he also taught that, having entered the door, there are the progressive steps of righteousness which every believing child must ascend in order to grow up to the full stature of the robust sons of God.

(From: Robert F. Kennedy (1925 - 1968), South Africa, 1966)
It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-156 Section-5)
Kingdom believers should possess an implicit faith, a whole-souled belief, in the certain triumph of righteousness.

(From: The RSV Bible - Mark 9:23)
And Jesus said..."All things are possible to him who believes."

(From: Etty Hilsum )
One must marry one's feelings to one's beliefs and ideas. That is probably the only way to achieve a measure of harmony in one's life.

(From: Robert Oxton Bolton )
A belief is not merely an idea the mind possesses; it is an idea that possesses the mind.

(From: Heidi Wills )
We do not believe if we do not live and work according to our belief.

(From: The ASB Bible - Mark 5:36)
"Do not be afraid any longer, only believe."

(From: Alfred A. Montapert )
If you don't have solid beliefs you cannot build a stable life. Beliefs are like the foundation of a building, and they are the foundation to build your life upon.

(From: Walter Bagehot (1826 - 1877 )
Strong beliefs win strong men, and then make them stronger.

(From: Christopher Paolini, Eragon )
Many people have died for their beliefs… The real courage is living and suffering for what you believe.

(From: William James (1842 - 1910 )
Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living, and your belief will help create the fact.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882 )
We are born believing. A man bears beliefs, as a tree bears apples.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-102 Section-6)
Skepticism may challenge the theories of theology, but confidence in the dependability of personal experience affirms the truth of that belief which has grown into faith.

(From: The ASB Bible - John 11:40)
"Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?"

(From:
Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890 - 1969 )
Plans are worthless, but planning is everything.

(From: Lester R. Bittel, The Nine Master Keys of Management )
Good plans shape good decisions. That's why good planning helps to make elusive dreams come true.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-160 Section-4)
It requires intelligence to secure one's share of the desirable things of life. It is wholly erroneous to suppose that faithfulness in doing one's daily work will insure the rewards of wealth. Barring the occasional and accidental acquirement of wealth, the material rewards of the temporal life are found to flow in certain well-organized channels, and only those who have access to these channels may expect to be well rewarded for their temporal efforts. Poverty must ever be the lot of all men who seek for wealth in isolated and individual channels. Wise planning, therefore, becomes the one thing essential to worldly prosperity. Success requires not only devotion to one's work but also that one should function as a part of some one of the channels of material wealth.

(From: Philip Crosby, Reflections on Quality )
If anything is certain, it is that change is certain. The world we are planning for today will not exist in this form tomorrow.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - # 27)
A good traveler has no fixed plans
and is not intent upon arriving.
A good artist lets his intuition
lead him wherever it wants.
A good scientist has freed himself of concepts
and keeps his mind open to what is.

Thus the Master is available to all people
and doesn't reject anyone.
He is ready to use all situations
and doesn't waste anything.
This is called embodying the light.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-171 Section-7)
Most of the really important things which Jesus said or did seemed to happen casually, "as he passed by." There was so little of the professional, the well-planned, or the premeditated in the Master's earthly ministry. He dispensed health and scattered happiness naturally and gracefully as he journeyed through life. It was literally true, "He went about doing good."

(From: Peter Drucker (1909 - 2005 )
Long-range planning does not deal with future decisions, but with the future of present decisions.

(From: Thomas Paine (1737 - 1809 )
When we are planning for posterity, we ought to remember that virtue is not hereditary.

(From: Alexander Hamilton (1755 - 1804 )
Men often oppose a thing merely because they have had no agency in planning it, or because it may have been planned by those whom they dislike.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-48 Section-6)
...learn to suffer less through sorrow and disappointment, first, by making fewer personal plans concerning other personalities, and then, by accepting your lot when you have faithfully performed your duty.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Planning is an essential part of life, most would agree. Especially Good Planning. The art of good Planning comes with experience, trial and error, and use of the wisdom we have earned through our experiences.

Plans on the other hand... they are a dime a dozen. There is a saying that, If you want to make God Laugh, tell Him your Plans. Making Plans is of course, quite the universal undertaking where humans are concerned... we all do it, we cannot really help ourselves. It is an unavoidable part of life on an uncertain, confused, unsafe and socially immature world such as the one we here live upon. The problem with Plans is that we have a tendency (the ego part of us has), to get overly attached to them. We ascribe an importance to them that few Plans are at all deserving of. Perhaps it is because it is so easy for us to confuse the importance of Plans with the Importance of Planning. And yet... making plans is indispensable to the process of Planning. Our inclination is to see our Plans as our Goal, rather than to recognize them as the stepping stones which are used in the progression Toward our Goal.

Too often we try to make plans for others to carry out.... either for themselves or for us. The most common result of this unfulfilling endeavor is disappointment, sorrow or even anger. Rarely does it make you happy and most certainly it doesn't make the other happy. It has a tendency to look too much like unasked for or unwanted advice. It is best to avoid the practice altogether, and make Plans only for ourselves instead. That is Truly a difficult enough task... don't you think?

Planning defines our Personal Goals, be they immediate goals, short term goals, long-term future goals or yes, even our Eternal Goals. Planning determines the direction and the course we will follow in the pursuit of our goals. Plans are the ideas we come up with along the way that we hope or imagine will lead us to our goals. Plans are indeed worth pursuing... if they prove to be at least partially good Plans, they take us closer to where we want to be. If they perchance turn out to be Really Good Plans, they may even prove beneficial to much of our future Planning efforts. And if they prove to be bad plans, well... discarding them so as to make room for better ones is the choice of wisdom, all the while remembering them well so as not to unwittingly repeat them...wouldn't you say?

Planning...
A small and unobtrusive reminder from another is not always an unwelcome thing, but Sometimes we need to remind ourselves to do it, or even better... ask God to remind us!

Welcome by: Pastor Daniel

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within. You are the Temple. You are the Congregation. Any and All Truth is the Gospel. The Divine Spirit within you is your True Minister.

If everyone was good at it, there'd be a lot less arguing and fighting in the world...

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #887, is Listening…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Listen

It is a word that we, as children, probably remember hearing over and over and over again...
Our Parents... our teachers... elder relatives... siblings... even our peers and friends...
Everyone wanted us to Listen to them. We could possibly have even heard the word so frequently as to almost have a negative impression of Listening... personally I heard it a lot more at school than at home, but I'm sure that it is just the opposite for many others.

Maturity tends to provide us with greater appreciation of Listening. As we mature we are far more capable of discerning the true Value of Listening. But even as relatively mature adults, we are susceptible to at times, listen to things that do not necessarily serve our best interests... and neglect to listen to those things that may indeed serve the greater good of ourselves and others. The greater part of gaining in maturity is learning to make the better choices about what To and Not To listen to.

Listening does not always result in agreement and rather often can lead to disagreement, but it invariably leads to better understanding of others and of ourselves. For many if not most, it is considerably more satisfying to be Listened to than to be agreed with. We All want and Deserve to be listened to. We are God's Children after all. Perhaps if we remembered that all the time we could become even Better Listeners... To our Human Brothers and Sisters, And to our Divine Parent.

Listening really Is a Good Thing!
May we all continuously get better and better at it... it is an important part of Loving.

Leo Buscaglia (1925 - 1998 )
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-171 Section-7)
Jesus was never in a hurry. He had time to comfort his fellow men "as he passed by." And he always made his friends feel at ease. He was a charming listener. He never engaged in the meddlesome probing of the souls of his associates.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-132 Section-4)
As a rule, to those he taught the most, he said the least. Those who derived most benefit from his personal ministry were overburdened, anxious, and dejected mortals who gained much relief because of the opportunity to unburden their souls to a sympathetic and understanding listener, and he was all that and more.

(From: Catherine de Hueck )
With the gift of listening comes the gift of healing.

(From: Karl Menninger )
Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. The friends who listen to us are the ones we move toward. When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand.

(From: Paul Tillich (1886 - 1965 )
The first duty of love is to listen.

(From: Mary Field Belenky, Women's Ways of Knowing)
Really listening and suspending one's own judgment is necessary in order to understand other people on their own terms... This is a process that requires trust and builds trust.

(From: Roy Moody)
The greatest motivational act one person can do for another is to listen.

(From: Krishnamurti )
So when you are listening to somebody, completely, attentively, then you are listening not only to the words, but also to the feeling of what is being conveyed, to the whole of it, not part of it.

(From: Wilson Mizner (1876 - 1933)
A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but after a while he gets to know something.

(From: M. Scott Peck )
You cannot truly listen to anyone and do anything else at the same time.

(From: Albert Guinon (1863 - 1923 )
There are people who, instead of listening to what is being said to them, are already listening to what they are going to say themselves.

(From: Hugh Elliott, Standing Room Only weblog, 02-14-2003)
Listen. Do not have an opinion while you listen because frankly, your opinion doesn't hold much water outside of Your Universe. Just listen.

(From: Ernest Hemingway (1899 - 1961 )
When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.

(From: Steven Spielberg )
My parents taught me how to listen to everybody before I made up my own mind. When you listen, you learn. You absorb like a sponge-and your life becomes so much better than when you are just trying to be listened to all the time.

(From: Ernest Hemingway (1899 - 1961 )
I like to listen. I have learned a great deal from listening carefully.

(From: Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809 - 1894 )
It is the province of knowledge to speak and it is the privilege of wisdom to listen.

Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.

(From: Seneca (5 BC - 65 AD), Epistles )
Live among men as if God beheld you; speak to God as if men were listening.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-146 Section-2)
Jesus taught his followers that, when they had made their prayers to the Father, they should remain for a time in silent receptivity to afford the indwelling spirit the better opportunity to speak to the listening soul. The spirit of the Father speaks best to man when the human mind is in an attitude of true worship.

(From: The Land Before Time )
Let your heart guide you. It whispers, so listen closely.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882 )
None of us will ever accomplish anything excellent or commanding except when he listens to this whisper which is heard by him alone.

(From: The ASB Bible - Jeremiah 23:1 )
"But who has stood in the council of the LORD, That he should see and hear His word? Who has given heed to His word and listened?

(From: Franz Kafka (1883 - 1924 )
You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.

(From: Anna Quindlen )
Acts of bravery don't always take place on battlefields. They can take place in your heart, when you have the courage to honor your character, your intellect, your inclinations, and, yes your soul by listening to its clean, clear voice of direction instead of following the muddied messages of a timid world.

(From: Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965 )
"Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak, Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen."

(From: Oprah Winfrey (1954 - ), Stanford Commencement Address)
Check your ego at the door and check your gut instead. Every right decision I have ever made has come from my gut. Every wrong decision I've made was the result of me not listening to the greater voice of myself

(From: The RSV Bible - Proverbs 8:32-34)
And now, my sons, listen to me: happy are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it. Happy is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors.

A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named Ahmal. The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him Juan. Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal.

Her husband responds, 'They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal.'

If you want your life to be more rewarding, you have to change the way you think.

(From: John Ruskin (1819 - 1900 )
The highest reward for man's toil is not what he gets for it, but what he becomes by it.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-131 Section-8)
Always remember that God does not reward man for what he does but for what he is; therefore should you extend help to your fellows without the thought of rewards. Do good without thought of benefit to the self.

(From: Sister Mary Rose McGeady )
There is no greater joy nor greater reward than to make a fundamental difference in someone's life.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882 )
The only reward of virtue is virtue; the only way to have a friend is to be one.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-131 Section-1)
"The man who knows God looks upon all men as equal; they are his brethren. Those who are selfish, those who ignore their brothers in the flesh, have only weariness as their reward. Those who love their fellows and who have pure hearts shall see God. God never forgets sincerity. He will guide the honest of heart into the truth, for God is truth.

(From: John Dryden (1631 - 1700 )
Love is love's reward.

(From: Emanuel Swedenborg (1688 - 1772)
Real joy, which comes from loving to do good things without wanting to be repaid, is the reward that lasts forever.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-28 Section-6)
You should realize that there is a great reward of personal satisfaction in being first just, next fair, then patient, then kind.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-39 Section-4)
There is no material reward for righteous living, but there is profound satisfaction--consciousness of achievement--and this transcends any conceivable material reward.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

(From: Elbert Hubbard (1856 - 1915 )
Men are rich only as they give. He who gives great service gets great rewards.

(From: Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948 )
Infinite striving to be the best is man's duty, it is it's own reward. Everything else is in God's hands.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-140 Section-5)
The poor in spirit seek for goals of spiritual wealth--for God. And such seekers after truth do not have to wait for rewards in a distant future; they are rewarded now. They find the kingdom of heaven within their own hearts, and they experience such happiness now.

The Sermon
***********
To know Satisfaction...
To know Joy...
To know Friendship...

To know Truth...
To know Beauty...
To know Goodness...

To know Peace...
To know Love...
To know God...

Far Greater Rewards are these to the mature person than is any material prize or compensation.

Indeed the trophy, the treasure, the treat are more important to the little child... the immature... the ignorant, but as they learn and as they grow and as they mature, they may come to realize that the material Rewards are no more than symbols or tokens that serve as reminders of the True Rewards.

After all is said and done, perhaps the Greatest Reward one can experience is the Supreme Reward of being Appreciated.

What do You think?
