“The Teddy Bear”
(Author Unknown)

This is a true story. Some years ago a young boy in the mid West was born blind. And, as he grew his parents learned of a surgeon and a pioneering surgical technique being done in Boston, Massachusetts, that had the potential to give this boy something he had never in his life had - the ability to see. It was very expensive, but his family and his friends pitched in, and his family implored his church, and enough money was raised to enable them to have this surgery.

As the family were packing their belongings to travel to Boston, the mother observed that on top of the stack of the boys' belongings was a tattered, beaten teddy bear, that had been given to him at his birth, and had been with him everyday of his life. And, she said to him, "well now, we're going to a new place, with new people - wouldn't you like to take a new teddy bear with you?"

Well, you know what the answer to that was. It was too important to him, and so the old teddy bear got packed along with everything else. It was with him through the surgery in the operating room, into the recovery room, through the days of recuperation in the hospital, and it was there too when the little boy packed his belongings again to return home, now, amazingly able to see. Can you imagine the joy for the first time of looking out the window and seeing clouds, and trees? Or, for the first time seeing the face of his mother and father, or for the first time seeing the teddy bear that had meant so much to him everyday of his life? And, so there with his belongings, ready to go home was the teddy bear.

One by one the members of the hospital staff who had grown very attached to this lad, came to say their goodbyes. And, finally the surgeon, who had performed the successful operation came. When he entered the door, the boy reached down beside him, and picked up the teddy bear and said, "I want you to have this."

For years after that, you could go to the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, to the tenth floor of the pediatric unit, and there in a glass case, you would find this teddy bear, battered and torn. And, next to it a note that said simply, "This is the highest fee I have ever received for professional services rendered." It was given as an expression of love and gratitude, and it said to that surgeon, "this is what I think of you."

No matter what we say or do, this is what we think of you, God. Let us offer ourselves and our gifts to God. Amen.
