"If I could only stop the wind!"
(©2007 By Bob Perks - 2believe@comcast.net)

There was a time when falling leaves thrilled me.   The more that fell the happier I was.   But I was a child then and leaves were something I played in, not something I had to clean up.

When I grew up and had children, leaves thrilled me.  The more that fell the happier I was.  I had two small children and leaves were something they played in, not something they had to clean up.

When I grew older and the children were gone falling leaves thrilled me.  The more that fell the...wait.  I hate falling leaves now.  Oh, they're beautiful when they are hanging up there.  But, now I have to clean them up all by myself.  The more that fall, the more miserable I am!

Okay, maybe not that bad, but now I just run over them with my lawn mower and poof, they are history.

Well, the one's in my driveway still drive me crazy.

Our driveway runs up along side the house and curves directly behind it.  Marianne parks there and I stay just off the side of the driveway near the top.

Every year for as long as we've been here, the leaves fall and pile up in the same spot.  Just off the deck when you open the gate and step down, you often times step into a pile.  Several times a day I have to sweep them away so that the drain doesn't block up when it rains.

The entire space behind the house is fine.  All of the leaves that fall are blown right in front of the gate.

Snow does the same thing.

It's the wind.

"If I could only stop the wind!" I said today.

Then it hit me.  I can't stop the wind but I can re-direct it.

Right off the deck, just past the gate, at the end of the pile of leaves is the garden hose rack, then two garbage cans.

Today, I simply moved the two garbage cans and the hose.

At the end of the day there were no leaves just outside the gate.  Moving the cans and the hose caused the wind to blow differently.

"Amazing!"

Sometimes when we make little changes, we get big results.

If you are facing challenges of your own, don't try to stop the wind.  Don't try to build a mountain to prevent the wind from piling your leaves.  Make one small change, see what it does, then make another small change.  Before you know it, you'll see big results, too.

Like me.  No more piles of leaves just outside the gate.

Now they're in the other corner right where Marianne gets out of the car.

"If I can only stop the wind!"

Pastor's Quote of the Week
************************
All human situations have their inconveniences. We feel those of the present but neither see nor feel those of the future; and hence we often make troublesome changes without amendment, and frequently for the worse.

(From: Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790)
