Church Within's "Light and Life Garden Retreat"
********************************************
Update:

Well... the "Light and Life Garden" tractor that you all Lovingly Helped to Provide has been here just over a week now and I am in the process of learning how to make it work safely and efficiently. Getting an $8,000. tractor for $4,000., I was aware that a certain amount of repair and maintenance would be necessary prior to it's being put to work, and so that is what I have been doing with it so far. I am now in the process of disassembling and cleaning and refurbishing the brake system so that the tractor will stop when I apply pressure to the brake pedals. (Funny how Important that seems while going up and down hills. <G>) This is not a simple process with construction tractors, and Definitely not one that you'd be willing or able to pay someone Else to do For you. I should be finished with them within a few more days, so hopefully I will be able to report on some of the "ground" work I've been able to accomplish with it by next Sunday. ;-)

We are Extremely Grateful to All who have contributed to the Tractor Fund to make it Possible! Any further contributions received for the Tractor Fund will go toward repairing, servicing and maintaining the Church Tractor and are Equally Appreciated. Thank you ALL!!!

Tractor Fund Contributions may be sent to:

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #52)
If you close your mind in judgments and traffic with desires, your heart will be troubled.
If you keep your mind from judging and aren't led by the senses, your heart will find peace.

(An African Proverb)
Do not look where you fell, but where you slipped.

(From: Socrates)
Wisdom begins in wonder.

(From: Aristotle)
Whatsoever that be within us that feels, thinks, desires, and animates, is something celestial, divine, and, consequently, imperishable.

(From: Urantia Papers - Paper-146 Section-3)
While you cannot observe the divine spirit at work in your minds, there is a practical method of discovering the degree to which you have yielded the control of your soul powers to the teaching and guidance of this indwelling spirit of the heavenly Father, and that is the degree of your love for your fellow men. This spirit of the Father partakes of the love of the Father, and as it dominates man, it unfailingly leads in the directions of divine worship and loving regard for one's fellows.

(From: Vincent Van Gogh)
Love is something eternal; the aspect may change, but not the essence.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-103 Section-9)
When reason once recognizes right and wrong, it exhibits wisdom; when wisdom chooses between right and wrong, truth and error, it demonstrates spirit leading. And thus are the functions of mind, soul, and spirit ever closely united and functionally interassociated. Reason deals with factual knowledge; wisdom, with philosophy and revelation; faith, with living spiritual experience. Through truth man attains beauty and by spiritual love ascends to goodness.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson)
It is one of the most beautiful compensations in life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.

(From: Benjamin Franklin)
Think of these things, whence you came, where you are going, and to whom you must account.

(From: Walt Whitman)
Whatever satisfies the soul is truth.

(From: The KJV Bible - John 3:21)
But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-132 Section-7)
If we know God, our real business on earth is so to live as to permit the Father to reveal himself in our lives, and thus will all God-seeking persons see the Father and ask for our help in finding out more about the God who in this manner finds expression in our lives.

The Sermon
***********
Give time to be Helpful to others.
All can use a little more Help

Make time to Comfort those who are Suffering.
Everybody Suffers from time to time.

Take time to Love those who need Love.
Everyone needs Love ALL the time!

Create time to Communicate with God.
Then you'll Have More than enough time for Everything Else!

Religion isn't about What you believe,
        it's about How you Live!
It isn't about what you Know,
        but about how you Act!
Nor is religion about what you have done in the past,
so much as what you Strive to do today!

Live in Love...
Act in Love...
Strive in Love...

BE in Love.

Love is the Answer.
Love will Find the Way.

Don't ya Think?

Church Within's "Light and Life Garden Retreat"
********************************************
Update:
Well, the "Tractor Within" is Up and Running! It Starts and Runs well now, and the newly repaired brakes make it safe to drive and operate. The hydraulic system needs some work yet for maximum efficiency (all the fluid replaced, new filters, a few leaks fixed and some adjustments), but with a little finesse it's adequate to do the present work that needs to be done on the Church Property before Winter gets here. Thursday this week, I started on the underground drainage system, the backfilling and the grading of the Upper Parking Area. I've got it about 2/3rds of the way ready for gravel already!

Thank you all Again for your help in making this all Possible!

Quotes

(From: Mary Poole)
The next best thing to being clever is being able to quote someone who is.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-100 Section-4)
You cannot truly love your fellows by a mere act of the will. Love is only born of thoroughgoing understanding of your neighbor's motives and sentiments. It is not so important to love all men today as it is that each day you learn to love one more human being. If each day or each week you achieve an understanding of one more of your fellows, and if this is the limit of your ability, then you are certainly socializing and truly spiritualizing your personality. Love is infectious, and when human devotion is intelligent and wise, love is more catching than hate. But only genuine and unselfish love is truly contagious. If each mortal could only become a focus of dynamic affection, this benign virus of love would soon pervade the sentimental emotion-stream of humanity to such an extent that all civilization would be encompassed by love, and that would be the realization of the brotherhood of man.

(From: Margaret Mead)
A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

(From: John F. Kennedy)
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

(From: a Childhood Friend's Dad)
"Can't means Won't."

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-155 Section-6)
When you once begin to find God in your soul, presently you will begin to discover him in other men's souls and eventually in all the creatures and creations of a mighty universe.

(From: Elisabeth Kubler-Ross)
It is not the end of the physical body that should worry us. Rather, our concern must be to live while we're alive---to release our inner selves from the spiritual death that comes with living behind a facade designed to conform to external definitions of who and what we are.

(From: The Nashville TeaM 8/27/00 - Ham)
It is helpful to remember that life is not so much a struggle to win as it is a learning process which never ends. Once you release the pressure on yourselves that is involved in being successful in the eyes of the world, you can better relax and enjoy the process of learning those things which the Father wishes you to learn and therefore growing in the ways the Father wishes you to grow.
Sometimes we avoid introspection because during the struggle of life, of everyday work, there is a little fear that something might jump out of those dark places and trip you up and expose all of that to the rest of the world. So you try not to think about it or look at it or accept that you have anything which might be construed as being negative. The negativity is your own judgment, you are passing judgment on a part of yourself and I ask you is that wise? No, it is not. All that you are, all the imperfection, all the sides which are less than perfect, are part of everyone and it's all there to be integrated and exalted.
Most of the things you think of as faults are not necessarily so. As you judge others, you show evidence that you have judged yourself. Therefore, be fearless of your emotions, let them come. Be fearless of your memories, let them also come and grow then in your ability to love other people because you have grown in your ability to love yourself. Be understanding and compassionate with your own inner life and you will be better able to be compassionate with others.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 7:1-2)
"Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.

(Urantia Papers - Paper-160 Section-4)
Train your memory to hold in sacred trust the strength-giving and worth-while episodes of life, which you can recall at will for your pleasure and edification. Thus build up for yourself and in yourself reserve galleries of beauty, goodness, and artistic grandeur. But the noblest of all memories are the treasured recollections of the great moments of a superb friendship. And all of these memory treasures radiate their most precious and exalting influences under the releasing touch of spiritual worship.

The Sermon
***********
I wonder why it is that adult human beings have such a tendency to dwell, and/or focus upon, those episodes of life wherein they have apparently failed, or been embarrassed, or hurt, or emotionally devastated? It's difficult Not to, isn't it?

"But DON'T Let Anyone Else see it... Don't let anyone Else see that you've made mistakes, that you've been Hurt! Don't even let Yourself see it! Maybe it'll just go Away!" says the fearful ego.

But it Doesn't go away Does it? It just waits, and festers, and infects our thoughts and our actions. Who are we trying to Fool anyways? Are we trying to fool Others? "You can fool Some of the people Some of the time, but you can't fool All of the people All of the time." Are we trying to fool God? Yeah Right... As IF! There's only one person we can Really fool, and that's Ourselves.

It's hard NOT to listen to that Loud, Negative and Persistent internal voice of Criticism and Defeat that incessantly battles for attention with the "still small voice" of Spirit, and Love, and Encouragement... ain't it? Sure it's difficult, seems downright Impossible... don't it? But... Is it impossible? No, it's Not!

I KNOW it's not Impossible, 'cause I've Done it a few times. Can't say that I'm magnificent at it yet, but I'm better at it than I Once was... than I Used to be. I Also know that I can't do it alone--- I can't do it without God's Help... without God's Support... without God's Love. Whenever I Try to do it alone---try to Control the Outcome myself---the "internal voice of Criticism and Defeat" gets Louder, More Negative, Far more Persistent. Fear fuels my actions rather than love. But, when I allow God to help me---allow God to take control of the outcomes---self-respect is the result, and Love is the Rule. And the "still, small voice" that says, "This is the way; walk therein," teaches me Compassion, teaches me Love, teaches me the Joy of Truth, Beauty and Goodness.

"I wonder why it is that adult human beings have such a tendency to dwell, and/or focus upon, those episodes of life wherein they have apparently failed, or been embarrassed, or hurt, or emotionally devastated?"

Certainly we must Look at them and Review them from time to time so that we may Learn from them and Understand the feelings and emotions that they caused in us---so that we can Resolve the negative Issues that they created in our lives. But we must learn to look at them with the eyes of a Loving and Forgiving Parent... with the eyes of Maturity. Then we can learn to forgive our own immaturity and others who remind us of it. Then we can Truly learn to Love.

Dwell on Love rather than Fear. Let your Focus be upon Truth, Beauty and Goodness rather than on deceit, unpleasantness, or injustice. Allow Hope to be your Motivation, Trust to be your Courage to Proceed, Faith to be your Momentum, and God to be your Safety Net.

Ours is but to take the step of Faith... God's is to determine where that step will take us.

Quitting is the only failure.

Dare to Succeed!

(From: Clare Booth Luce)
There are no hopeless situations; there are only men who have grown hopeless about them.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson)
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-91 Section-8)
Prayer may become an established custom; many pray because others do. Still others pray because they fear something direful may happen if they do not offer their regular supplications.
To some individuals prayer is the calm expression of gratitude; to others, a group expression of praise, social devotions; sometimes it is the imitation of another's religion, while in true praying it is the sincere and trusting communication of the spiritual nature of the creature with the anywhere presence of the spirit of the Creator.
Prayer may be a spontaneous expression of God-consciousness or a meaningless recitation of theologic formulas. It may be the ecstatic praise of a God-knowing soul or the slavish obeisance of a fear-ridden mortal. It is sometimes the pathetic expression of spiritual craving and sometimes the blatant shouting of pious phrases. Prayer may be joyous praise or a humble plea for forgiveness.
Prayer may be the childlike plea for the impossible or the mature entreaty for moral growth and spiritual power. A petition may be for daily bread or may embody a wholehearted yearning to find God and to do his will. It may be a wholly selfish request or a true and magnificent gesture toward the realization of unselfish brotherhood.
Prayer may be an angry cry for vengeance or a merciful intercession for one's enemies. It may be the expression of a hope of changing God or the powerful technique of changing one's self. It may be the cringing plea of a lost sinner before a supposedly stern Judge or the joyful expression of a liberated son of the living and merciful heavenly Father.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 12:12)
Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-144 Section-2)
"Prayer is entirely a personal and spontaneous expression of the attitude of the soul toward the spirit; prayer should be the communion of sonship and the expression of fellowship. Prayer, when indited by the spirit, leads to co-operative spiritual progress. The ideal prayer is a form of spiritual communion which leads to intelligent worship. True praying is the sincere attitude of reaching heavenward for the attainment of your ideals.

(From: The RSV Bible - Mark 11:24)
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-91 Section-7)
The great religious teachers and the prophets of past ages were not extreme mystics. They were God-knowing men and women who best served their God by unselfish ministry to their fellow mortals. Jesus often took his apostles away by themselves for short periods to engage in meditation and prayer, but for the most part he kept them in service-contact with the multitudes. The soul of man requires spiritual exercise as well as spiritual nourishment.

When I was a child, I thought that Prayer was a way to get everything I ever wanted.

More often than not, it seemed, I was disappointed.

Much later in life, I thought that Prayer was a way to get everything I ever Needed.

I was rarely disappointed... unless I mistook my Wants for my real Needs.

More recently I have started praying for God's Will.

And I Always get it! It may not always be what I Think I want, but it is ALWAYS what I Need.

(From: The Tao Te Ching)
The Master observes the world
but trusts his inner vision.
He allows things to come and go.
His heart is open as the sky.

(From: Leo F. Buscalia )
A wonderful realization will be the day you realize that you are unique in all the world. There is nothing that is an accident. You are a special combination for a purpose-and don't let them tell you otherwise, even if they tell you that purpose is an illusion. (Live an illusion if you have to). You are that combination so that you can do what is essential for you to do. Don't ever believe that you have nothing to contribute. The world is an incredible unfulfilled tapestry. And only you can fulfill that tiny space that is yours.

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-159 Section-3)
When my children once become self-conscious of the assurance of the divine presence, such a faith will expand the mind, ennoble the soul, reinforce the personality, augment the happiness, deepen the spirit perception, and enhance the power to love and be loved.

(From: Henry Ford)
"Whether you think you can or think you can't -- you are right."

(From: Elizabeth Kubler-Ross)
"People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within."

(From: The Urantia Papers – Paper-159 Section-3)
The world is filled with hungry souls who famish in the very presence of the bread of life; men die searching for the very God who lives within them. Men seek for the treasures of the kingdom with yearning hearts and weary feet when they are all within the immediate grasp of living faith. Faith is to religion what sails are to a ship; it is an addition of power, not an added burden of life. There is but one struggle for those who enter the kingdom, and that is to fight the good fight of faith. The believer has only one battle, and that is against doubt--unbelief.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-101 Section-8)
Belief has attained the level of faith when it motivates life and shapes the mode of living. The acceptance of a teaching as true is not faith; that is mere belief. Neither is certainty nor conviction faith. A state of mind attains to faith levels only when it actually dominates the mode of living. Faith is a living attribute of genuine personal religious experience. One believes truth, admires beauty, and reverences goodness, but does not worship them; such an attitude of saving faith is centered on God alone, who is all of these personified and infinitely more.
Belief is always limiting and binding; faith is expanding and releasing. Belief fixates, faith liberates. But living religious faith is more than the association of noble beliefs; it is more than an exalted system of philosophy; it is a living experience concerned with spiritual meanings, divine ideals, and supreme values; it is God-knowing and man-serving. Beliefs may become group possessions, but faith must be personal. Theologic beliefs can be suggested to a group, but faith can rise up only in the heart of the individual religionist.

(From: Dale Carnegie)
"Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all."

(From: Leo F. Buscalia )
Don't spend your precious time asking "Why isn't the world a better place?" It will only be time wasted. The question to ask is "How can I make it better?" To that there is an answer.

The Sermon
***********
True it Is... the Experience of receiving Personal and Unquestionable Validation because you Believed, because you Trusted, because you Acted Sincerely and Totally in Faith and then, There it Was, Right before your Very Eyes... is one of the Best Feelings there Is in this world... Ain't it?

When I was a little guy growing up, I was fortunate enough to have regular everyday examples of Faith in Action. Looking back in fact, I can't remember a time when my parents ever Didn't act Faithfully in Faith. Now, my family was Roman Catholic, but that's not the kind of faith I'm talkin' about here... I'm talking about the kind of Personal Faith that controls and Motivates your actions... that causes you to live your Life the way you do... know what I Mean?

Like... my Dad... He had Faith that there was something to Like about Everybody you Meet. He was very outgoing and would think nothing of walking up to someone he didn't know and introducing himself, and then Talk about almost Anything with them just for the Joy of meeting someone new. He had Faith that being a Good and Friendly Person to others was the best way to go through Life... and it Worked for him every time I watched. His Faith in God, and his Faith in People always impressed me while I was growing up.

My Mom... She exemplified to me the effectiveness of frequently asking for help and direction from God's Unseen helpers (She saw them as Angels and Saints). "Oh Yes," she would say, "I talk to my Angels all the Time... I have Names that I call them." I remember asking her once, "Do they say things back to you?" She replied matter of factly, "No, I don't ever hear any words, I just... Know." Other times I would hear her ask different saints for help with something or other, and by God if she didn't Get it! Whenever we'd lose something around our house, it was always a prayer to St. Anthony (patron saint of the lost, as I remember it), for help in finding it. Whatever was lost would Invariably just "show up" shortly afterwards. Mom Knew she would get help (at least it always seemed that way to my young self), and then she Got it... More often than Not!

Everything for my parents seemed to Revolve around "Acting the way God would want you to act." They had Faith in the Afterlife and lived their lives accordingly. At the time, I thought that that's just what being Catholic was. But as I grew up, I met people who had many Different Beliefs---different understandings of who God is---and Their actions reflected Their Beliefs... and it Worked for Them just as effectively as it had for my parents, only they just had something different to call it. I began to discover that Acting in Faith was non-denominational... that Acting in Faith was not so much about What I believed as about How I believed... that Acting in Faith isn't merely about what I Know, but about what I Do... that Acting in Faith isn't so much about who I was yesterday, but about who I Am Today and who I am striving to be tomorrow.

True it Is... the Experience of receiving Personal and Unquestionable Validation because you Believed, because you Trusted, because you Acted Sincerely and Totally in Faith and then, There it Was, Right before your Very Eyes... is one of the Best Feelings there Is in this world... Ain't it?

To Me... there is Nothing Else Quite Like it. True Faith manifests Trust, Confidence, Fearlessness, Respect, Understanding, Wisdom and Love. It's a Good kinda' thing.

Faith Almost seems like something you could Devote your Whole Life to... don't ya Think?
