Humor of the Week

There were two blonde guys working for the city. One would dig a hole, the other would follow behind him and fill the hole in. They worked furiously all day without rest, one guy digging a hole, the other guy filling it in again. An onlooker was amazed at their hard work, but couldn't understand what they were doing.
So he asked the hole digger, "I appreciate the effort you are putting into your work, but what's the story. You dig a hole and your partner follows behind and fills it up again."
The hole digger wiped his brow and sighed, "Well, normally we are a three-man team, but the guy who plants the trees is sick today."

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #414, is the Divine Within…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-194 Section-3)
Prayer does not move the divine heart to liberality of bestowal, but it does so often dig out larger and deeper channels wherein the divine bestowals may flow to the hearts and souls of those who thus remember to maintain unbroken communion with their Maker through sincere prayer and true worship.

(From: John Ruskin (1819 - 1900)
I believe that the first test of a truly great man is his humility. I don't mean by humility, doubt of his power. But really great men have a curious feeling that the greatness is not of them, but through them. And they see something divine in every other man and are endlessly, foolishly, incredibly merciful.

(From: Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC)
Whatever that be which thinks, understands, wills, and acts. It is something celestial and divine.

(From: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
To the poet, to the philosopher, to the saint, all things are friendly and sacred, all events profitable, all days holy, all men divine.

(From: 'Abdu'l-Baha, 1844-1921)
The most important principle of divine philosophy is the oneness of the world of humanity, the unity of mankind, the bond conjoining East and West, the tie of love which blends human hearts.

(From: David B. Haight)
Love is this divine ingredient. It alone describes what can be our perfect relationship to our Heavenly Father and our family and neighbors, and the means by which we accomplish His work.

(From: Solonia - 2/7/04 The Garden TeaM)
Learn to love the Truth about others, about reality, about the world, about yourself. Be a student of Truth. Learn to love it regardless of what it may look like. Truth is divine.

(From: John Burroughs (1837 - 1921)
The lesson which life repeats and constantly enforces is 'look under foot.' You are always nearer the divine and the true sources of your power than you think.

(From: The RSV Bible - Hebrews 11:1-2)
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old received divine approval.

(From: Machiventa - 1/12/03 The North Idaho TeaM)
What needs to be done is the redefinition of faith from one that passively accepts the guidance of another to one that depends solely on the presence of the divine within and the recognition of the divine in others.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-195 Section-10)
Jesus' disciples should be more than conquerors, even overflowing sources of inspiration and enhanced living to all men. Religion is only an exalted humanism until it is made divine by the discovery of the reality of the presence of God in personal experience.

(From: Carlos Santana)
Real peace comes from enlightenment and educating people to behave more in a divine manner.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-195 Section-5)
As you view the world, remember that the black patches of evil which you see are shown against a white background of ultimate good. You do not view merely white patches of good which show up miserably against a black background of evil.
When there is so much good truth to publish and proclaim, why should men dwell so much upon the evil in the world just because it appears to be a fact? The beauties of the spiritual values of truth are more pleasurable and uplifting than is the phenomenon of evil.

In religion, Jesus advocated and followed the method of experience, even as modern science pursues the technique of experiment. We find God through the leadings of spiritual insight, but we approach this insight of the soul through the love of the beautiful, the pursuit of truth, loyalty to duty, and the worship of divine goodness. But of all these values, love is the true guide to real insight.

(From: Alfred A. Montapert)
Man's ultimate destiny is to become one with the Divine Power which governs and sustains the creation and its creatures.

The Sermon
***********
One way that I do many of my Sunday Services, Today's for example, is by finding a particularly Inspiring Quote and then taking from it a Key word that I then use to “Search” my various resources for quotes that contain that specific word. The word for today was “Divine,” and I got it from the first of the above Quotes which “jumped out at me” (so to speak), last evening at our weekly Urantia Book Study Group. The reason that particular segment got my attention was that it reminded me of my younger days of thinking that I could somehow change God's mind if I said the words of a prayer the “right” way… as if the prayer was some magical formula that could in some way bend God's Will to be more in line with my own. The reminiscence made me chuckle as I recalled that it was My mind and will that had needed the changing through all of those immature and childish years… not God's.

Anyways… while searching for quotes with the word “Divine” in them this morning, I became conscious of a somewhat different theme emerging from the passages I was in the process of collecting. It was the concept that Divine is not only what God Is… it is a quality that we all, as God's Children, should be aspiring To if we are indeed following the Lord's injunction to “Be you perfect even as your Father in Heaven is Perfect.” Being Divine is rather obviously not our present state. But as a Child of God, it Is our Potential Destiny… even our Eternal Destiny.

Truth is Divine.
Beauty is Divine.
Goodness is Divine.
Love is Divine.

The more we are True to ourselves and to God…
The more we develop and sustain our Inner Beauty…
The more we discover and emulate God's Goodness…
The more we accept and share Love…
The Greater our Divine Experience.

One of my Very Favorite quotes of all times comes from the Urantia Papers in Paper 111 – Section 1, and it is:
“What you are today is not so important as what you are becoming day by day and in eternity.”

Dear Divine Father,
Show me Your Way. I may be ignorant, immature, childish, stubborn, willful, resistant and obstinate… but I CAN be Taught. Eventually…

Parent,

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

I found a Lot of what I consider to be good and pertinent quotes for today's Service. Most of them are in their usual position in front of the Sermon, but one in particular struck me as an appropriate “closer” so it immediately follows today's Sermon. It's not my usual “modus operandi” but then, What the Heck.

I hope it speaks to your Soul as it did to mine.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #415, is Expectations and Disappointments…

********************************************
Quotes
*******
(From: Fritz Perls)
I am not in this world to live up to other people's expectations, nor do I feel that the world must live up to mine.

(From: Aaron - 12/5/93 The Spokane TeaM)
Expectation is a divider in relationships because this brings you to desiring more than you have the potential for attaining in a certain time frame. Realize that you can each present your views and understanding as you relate to each other. If you hold a higher view than what occurs, then disappointment can set in.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-48 Section-6)
…sometimes your most disappointing disappointments have become your greatest blessings. Sometimes the planting of a seed necessitates its death, the death of your fondest hopes, before it can be reborn to bear the fruits of new life and new opportunity. And from them you will learn to suffer less through sorrow and disappointment, first, by making fewer personal plans concerning other personalities, and then, by accepting your lot when you have faithfully performed your duty.

(From: Thomas a Kempis (1380 - 1471)
Endeavor to be always patient of the faults and imperfections of others for thou has many faults and imperfections of thine own that require forbearance. If thou are not able to make thyself that which thou wishest, how canst thou expect to mold another in conformity to thy will?

(From: Alexander Pope (1688 – 1744)
Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.

(From: Seneca (5 BC - 65 AD)
The greatest loss of time is delay and expectation, which depend upon the future. We let go the present, which we have in our power, and look forward to that which depends upon chance, and so relinquish a certainty for an uncertainty.

(From: Samuel Hazo)
Expect everything, and anything seems nothing.
Expect nothing, and anything seems everything.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-149 Section-5)
"Much of man's sorrow is born of the disappointment of his ambitions and the wounding of his pride. Although men owe a duty to themselves to make the best of their lives on earth, having thus sincerely exerted themselves, they should cheerfully accept their lot and exercise ingenuity in making the most of that which has fallen to their hands. All too many of man's troubles take origin in the fear soil of his own natural heart.

(From: Charles F. Kettering (1876 - 1958)
Keep on going and the chances are you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I have never heard of anyone stumbling on something sitting down.

(From: Solonia - 1/21/2000 The Garden TeaM)

The step of Faith does not routinely bring expected results, rather it is far more likely to reveal new and previously unrecognized perceptions. The discovery of our Father's will is often made possible through actively finding out what indeed is Not His will. Disappointments, rather than putting you into a place of inaction, should rather stimulate you further to step again; to continue your forward motion; to seek to discover all of those things which are Not the will of our Father, thereby revealing by process of elimination what indeed, truly Is His will. Do not let the fact of results, which appear to run contrary to your expectations, stifle the exuberance of your seeking. It is natural to take a moment of reflection to sort out your feelings of disappointment, and indeed it is also healthy, for in so doing is the next step made clearer to you through a better understanding of how your will may more closely co-inside with Father's Will.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-6)
One of the most amazing earmarks of religious living is that dynamic and sublime peace, that peace which passes all human understanding, that cosmic poise which betokens the absence of all doubt and turmoil. Such levels of spiritual stability are immune to disappointment. Such religionists are like the Apostle Paul, who said: "I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else shall be able to separate us from the love of God."

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 5:5)
and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-130 Section-6)
"This day, my son, you are to be reborn, re-established as a man of faith, courage, and devoted service to man, for God's sake. And when you become so readjusted to life within yourself, you become likewise readjusted to the universe; you have been born again--born of the spirit--and henceforth will your whole life become one of victorious accomplishment. Trouble will invigorate you; disappointment will spur you on; difficulties will challenge you; and obstacles will stimulate you. Arise, young man! Say farewell to the life of cringing fear and fleeing cowardice. Hasten back to duty and live your life in the flesh as a son of God, a mortal dedicated to the ennobling service of man on earth and destined to the superb and eternal service of God in eternity."

The Sermon
***********
This morning when I woke to do the Sunday Service I had absolutely NO idea what it was going to be about (or I guess you could say, I had no expectations). Being “clueless” on Sunday morning regarding a “Service Theme” is actually my preferred “mode of operation” for these things (although I Do sometimes get the subject from my preceding week's experiences), because it kind of forces me to “go to the Source” for a most current inspiration. At these times, like this morning for instance, I start out with a Stillness Meditation and internally say something like, “OK Father, what would You like me to share today?” or perhaps, “You know better what will touch your Children at this moment in time than I do, so where should we go with it?” or something like that… and then I try to keep my mind clear of internal dialogue and just Listen. In this morning's Stillness I heard (in a manner of speaking), the word Expectations. Well, That really got me going, and the Stillness kind of dissolved as I pondered how often our personal expectations, most Especially our expectations for Others, can result in a certain (as in, you can Count on it) level of Disappointment. I wouldn't be at all surprised if that has occurred to You from time to time… if not frequently.

Why is it that human beings so habitually seem to have Expectations of what Other People should or should not do… should or should not Think… should or should not Be? We do it at Work; we do it in Relationships; we do it in Marriage… and the result is almost Invariably Negative. So Why do we Persist in this unhealthy practice do you think, when it leads so often to disappointment, grief, sorrow, anger, antagonism and resentment? Why do we use terms like, “You should…”; “You ought to…”; “You need to…”; “Why don't you…”; “You'd be smarter to…” or “It's Your job to…” rather than “I should…”; “I ought to…”; “I need to…”; “Why don't I…”; “I'd be smarter to…” or “It's My job to…”? Why Is that? Why are our personal Expectations so frequently directed at Others rather than at ourselves where they most likely belong? I know I don't like it when other people impose their expectations upon Me (do You?), so why is it so hard to remember not to do it to others?

Even when I have Expectations of or for myself, I should ask myself if they directly or indirectly depend on anyone Other than myself for their fulfillment. If my answer is Yes, then I am harboring unrealistic and predictably disappointing Expectations for myself… wouldn't you say?

It's OK to have High Expectations for yourself, in fact, it's even a Good thing. It sets us in Motion, it provides Fuel for the Journey, it gives us Motivation, Hope and Resolve. But it is the better part of Wisdom to allow room for our personal expectations to Grow, to Evolve, to Expand… because Seldom do they end up conforming to our original preconceived notions.

If we give God permission to define the unfoldment of our Expectations for ourselves, even the final outcome, then not only will our Expectations be met… they will be far Exceeded.

I should really take all of this to Heart!!!
How about You?

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-156 Section-5)
You are destined to live a narrow and mean life if you learn to love only those who love you. Human love may indeed be reciprocal, but divine love is outgoing in all its satisfaction-seeking. The less of love in any creature's nature, the greater the love need, and the more does divine love seek to satisfy such need. Love is never self-seeking, and it cannot be self-bestowed. Divine love cannot be self-contained; it must be unselfishly bestowed.
Kingdom believers should possess an implicit faith, a whole-souled belief, in the certain triumph of righteousness. Kingdom builders must be undoubting of the truth of the gospel of eternal salvation. Believers must increasingly learn how to step aside from the rush of life--escape the harassments of material existence--while they refresh the soul, inspire the mind, and renew the spirit by worshipful communion.
God-knowing individuals are not discouraged by misfortune or downcast by disappointment. Believers are immune to the depression consequent upon purely material upheavals; spirit livers are not perturbed by the episodes of the material world. Candidates for eternal life are practitioners of an invigorating and constructive technique for meeting all of the vicissitudes and harassments of mortal living. Every day a true believer lives, he finds it easier to do the right thing.
Spiritual living mightily increases true self-respect. But self-respect is not self-admiration. Self-respect is always co-ordinate with the love and service of one's fellows. It is not possible to respect yourself more than you love your neighbor; the one is the measure of the capacity for the other.
As the days pass, every true believer becomes more skillful in alluring his fellows into the love of eternal truth. Are you more resourceful in revealing goodness to humanity today than you were yesterday? Are you a better righteousness recommender this year than you were last year? Are you becoming increasingly artistic in your technique of leading hungry souls into the spiritual kingdom?
Are your ideals sufficiently high to insure your eternal salvation while your ideas are so practical as to render you a useful citizen to function on earth in association with your mortal fellows? In the spirit, your citizenship is in heaven; in the flesh, you are still citizens of the earth kingdoms. Render to the Caesars the things which are material and to God those which are spiritual.
The measure of the spiritual capacity of the evolving soul is your faith in truth and your love for man, but the measure of your human strength of character is your ability to resist the holding of grudges and your capacity to withstand brooding in the face of deep sorrow. Defeat is the true mirror in which you may honestly view your real self.
As you grow older in years and more experienced in the affairs of the kingdom, are you becoming more tactful in dealing with troublesome mortals and more tolerant in living with stubborn associates? Tact is the fulcrum of social leverage, and tolerance is the earmark of a great soul. If you possess these rare and charming gifts, as the days pass you will become more alert and expert in your worthy efforts to avoid all unnecessary social misunderstandings. Such wise souls are able to avoid much of the trouble which is certain to be the portion of all who suffer from lack of emotional adjustment, those who refuse to grow up, and those who refuse to grow old gracefully.

May I no longer have expectations of what others “ought”…only what “I ought” and may My expectations for me, coincide with Your expectations for me. Thanks! I Know I can always count on You for Your help in these areas of personal growth.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

Over the soon to be eight years that we have been doing these weekly on-line Sunday Services, a fair number of them have been on the topic of Faith. A fair number more have been on the topic of Hope, and I'm pretty sure (without going back and reading over the other 415 of them), that there has been at least one or two with the topic of Faith AND Hope (or Hope and Faith). As it was the combination of Hope and Faith that first began these presentations, and it is Indeed Hope and Faith that continue to keep them coming, I felt that perhaps it would not be overkill to do another today.

I Hope (and have Faith), that that will be acceptable to You…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #416, is Hope and Faith…

*******
(From: Woodrow Wilson (1856 - 1924)

You are not here merely to make a living. You are here to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, and with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world. You impoverish yourself if you forget this errand.

(From: Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 - 1968)
The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood.

(From: Welmek - 5/23/02 The tmarchives.com/old/)
And all of these things feed the drive within you to attain something that is greater than what you have already experienced. It is directly proportional to the faith-lure you allowed to be activated. And that which catalyzes this, is this sense of hope: that things will be bright, and beautiful, and take you to that place of overwhelming discovery and adventure, and that new creative potentials will become fulfilled. Hope is the grandeur of trust. It is the anticipation of the beauty yet to be experienced. And you have an infinite well of hope within you that feeds your perfection-hunger that is a gift of the Father, to achieve high levels of personality expression in becoming the person you wish to be; the person you were born to be, the person God created you to be.

(From: Erik H. Erikson)
Hope is both the earliest and the most indispensable virtue inherent in the state of being alive. If life is to be sustained hope must remain, even where confidence is wounded, trust impaired.

(From: The KJV Bible - Romans 8:24-25)
For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

(From: Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719)
If you wish success in life, make perseverance your bosom friend, experience your wise counselor, caution your elder brother and hope your guardian genius.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-155 Section-3)
…when religion is wholly spiritual in motive, it makes all life more worth while, filling it with high purposes, dignifying it with transcendent values, inspiring it with superb motives, all the while comforting the human soul with a sublime and sustaining hope.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 5:5)
and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-103 Section-9)
The ideal of religious philosophy is such a faith-trust as would lead man unqualifiedly to depend upon the absolute love of the infinite Father of the universe of universes. Such a genuine religious experience far transcends the philosophic objectification of idealistic desire; it actually takes salvation for granted and concerns itself only with learning and doing the will of the Father in Paradise. The earmarks of such a religion are: faith in a supreme Deity, hope of eternal survival, and love, especially of one's fellows.

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 15:13)
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
It's funny, when I got the “nudge” this morning in my Stillness Meditation with Father to do today's Sunday Service on Hope and Faith, I almost immediately had a relatively complete concept of how I wanted to share it… not in such a way as to insinuate that this is what You should or should not do but rather, what Hope and Faith mean to Me and how they impact my Own life. Then in my search for Quotes for the Service, in addition to all of the others which you've just read (you Did, didn't you? ;-), I found the following lesson which described so concisely everything that I had initially intended to share of my own personal perspectives. So I just decided to share the lesson with you…

(From: Solonia - 12/13/99 The Garden TeaM)
The greatest gift that you can give your brothers and sisters on this world, aside from Love, is Hope. So many are without Hope---hopelessly going from day today feeling unseen, feeling insignificant, feeling at the mercy of everyone and everything. You cannot give to them your Faith, for Faith is a very personal and individual matter between you and God. All that you can do is to Show them Your Faith, and in That, you give them Hope.
As you step forward in determination, absorbing and exuding the Love of our Father, it is enough to bring Hope into the forlorn Souls, into the Souls of those who feel forgotten, who feel alone, who feel discouraged. To see loving and exciting Faith portrayed by another helps them to rediscover the excitement for living. The Faith Step is always one that is taken in Hope---Hope for a better more perfect way. When you have a strong and active Hope, it is far easier for you to take the step of Faith towards fulfilling those hopes, towards fulfilling those dreams.
Put a little Hope into everyone who's path you cross. Show them that there is something to hope for. Share with them your own Hopes, your own dreams. Be the spark of Hope which ignites the flame of their Faith. In doing this you are indeed sharing Love, so at the same time, you are sharing the Two Greatest Gifts that you can share with another personality. You are sharing Love, you are sharing and giving Hope, and in the process, you are also sharing the Third greatest gift. You are sharing Yourself.
Put a little Hope in someone's life every day, and accept a little hope into your own. There is Nothing that the Father cannot do, and according to His will, everything is done. Everything that the Father wills, Will be Done. You may participate in the unfolding of Father's Will by your choices and by your desires to become more and more like Him.
(end of lesson)

So that pretty well covers it for me. What do “Hope and Faith” ignite in Your Soul Consciousness?

*******************************************
The Prayer
**********
Dear God,
I Wholeheartedly Trust in Your Love and in Your Care. It is This that forever gives me Hope and the Faith to pursue the realization of Truth, Beauty and Goodness in life, in this world, and in Your Universe.

(From: Tom Bodett)
They say a person needs just three things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for.

(From: Shakti Gawain)
As long as we focus on the outside, there will always be that empty, hungry, lost place inside that needs to be filled.

(From: Lantarnek - 6/7/98 The North Idaho TeaM)
When in conflict over needs of self and your motivations toward brotherly service, alleviate the struggle, the dichotomy, with that third element, the presence of the Father. Know that He flows equally through you as through others. Through association, through camaraderie, through sharing in relationship, you both bring together the two hands of the Father in mutual embrace.

(From: Will - 3/31/92 – the Tallahassee TeaM)
He provides all your spiritual needs and walks with you all the way, whatever your cares. You need not fear, for God is with you. You need not walk alone, for our Father walks with you. You need not ever want, for the Father is able to provide all things necessary for your spiritual life. You need not awaken to any temptation, for the Father will heal you. You will grow daily, those who place their faith in God, for He will provide the way to walk. His path is made clear to all who care to take it up.

(From: The RSV Bible - Luke 12:29-32)
And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be of anxious mind. For all the nations of the world seek these things; and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things shall be yours as well. "Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-1574 Section-2)
Even now you should begin to find deliverance from the bondage of fear and doubt as you enter upon the living of the new life of faith and hope. And when the feelings of service for your fellow men arise within your soul, do not stifle them; when the emotions of love for your neighbor well up within your heart, give expression to such urges of affection in intelligent ministry to the real needs of your fellows."

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-2)
Spiritual growth is first an awakening to needs, next a discernment of meanings, and then a discovery of values. The evidence of true spiritual development consists in the exhibition of a human personality motivated by love, activated by unselfish ministry, and dominated by the wholehearted worship of the perfection ideals of divinity. And this entire experience constitutes the reality of religion as contrasted with mere theological beliefs.
