There is a growing suspicion that what the world needs now is a religion that will cover the other six days of the week.

Welcome by: Pastor Daniel

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

This past weeks hurricane disaster in the southern United States has caused excessive hardship, suffering and destitution for so many undeserving and innocent people, truly in many ways, it has affected ALL people on this world. There is a great deal of Suspicion that much of the tragedy---material and personal---could have been lessened if not avoided… that greed and/or personal agenda could have somehow prevented a better preparedness. Only time and Discernment can reveal the actual Truth of the matter. In the mean time, let us allow Compassion to guide our immediate responses and actions toward the unfortunate victims of this terrible tragedy.

If all you can give is your Love and Prayers, then by all means give them to your capacity.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #463, is: suspicion vs. Discernment…

*******
(From: Carl Jung)
As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.

(From: Elyon - 6/10/01 – The North Idaho TeaM)
I, today, would like to take a look from the perspective of discernment. That which is close to home, under your nose, while it would seem so near at hand that you should be able to detect, to discern, or to evaluate it, is often the most overlooked. I'm aware of your phrase that “you judge in others that which you dislike in yourself.” The functional aspect of this insight is that stepping back, looking afar across the board in a sense, is where you can view enough to make a discerning picture or perspective.

(From: Elyon - 6/10/01 – The North Idaho TeaM)
Discernment greatly relies upon wisdom in order to detect value. Discernment isn't simply detection; it isn't the probing to discover first time. Rather it is the sorting of detection, the categorizing of your perception, applying merit, applying well-being.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-160 Section-2)
Every human being sooner or later acquires a certain concept of this world and a certain vision of the next. Now it is possible, through personality association, to unite these views of temporal existence and eternal prospects. Thus does the mind of one augment its spiritual values by gaining much of the insight of the other. In this way men enrich the soul by pooling their respective spiritual possessions. Likewise, in this same way, man is enabled to avoid that ever-present tendency to fall victim to distortion of vision, prejudice of viewpoint, and narrowness of judgment. Fear, envy, and conceit can be prevented only by intimate contact with other minds.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-191 Section-4)
But material-minded man is naturally more familiar with the material manifestations of a physical nature than with the equally real and mighty operations of a spiritual nature which are discerned only by the spiritual insight of the soul.

(From: Solonia – 8/6/03 – the Garden TeaM)
Pray for one another and pray for yourselves that you will become more expert at discerning the Father's will, at giving and accepting Love and embracing Truth, discovering Beauty and the worshipful feeling that accompanies it, and by becoming Good. Seek only the Goodness; Be in Service; Embrace the Truth that you know, and step out in Love.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-52 Section-6)
Ignorance breeds suspicion, and suspicion is incompatible with the essential attitude of sympathy and love.

(From: William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616)
Suspicion always haunts the guilty mind.

(From: Publilius Syrus (~100 BC)
A suspicious mind always looks on the black side of things.

(From: Rod Serling (1924 - 1975)
For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own -- for the children and the children yet unborn. And the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.

(From: H. Mumford Jones (1892 - 1980)
Ours is the age that is proud of machines that think and suspicious of men who try to.

(From: Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 - 1945)
We can gain no lasting peace if we approach it with suspicion and mistrust or with fear. We can gain it only if we proceed with the understanding, the confidence, and the courage which flow from conviction.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-140 Section-5)
Being sensitive and responsive to human need creates genuine and lasting happiness, while such kindly attitudes safeguard the soul from the destructive influences of anger, hate, and suspicion.

(From: Miyamoto Musashi)
Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-191 Section-4)
You are all the children of light; therefore stumble not into the misunderstanding entanglements of mortal suspicion and human intolerance. If you are ennobled, by the grace of faith, to love unbelievers, should you not also equally love those who are your fellow believers in the far-spreading household of faith?

(From: John Claypool)
We do not first get all the answers and then live in the light of our understanding. We must rather plunge into life meeting what we have to meet and experiencing what we have to experience and in the light of living try to understand. If insight comes at all, it will not before, but only through and after experience.

(From: Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (1841 - 1935)
A moment's insight is sometimes worth a lifetime's experience.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-101 Section-1)
Religion lives and prospers, then, not by sight and feeling, but rather by faith and insight. It consists not in the discovery of new facts or in the finding of a unique experience, but rather in the discovery of new and spiritual meanings in facts already well known to mankind.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-196 Section-3)
Concerning insight, the recognition of moral values and the discernment of spiritual meanings, all that the human mind can do is to discover, recognize, interpret, and choose.

(From: Helen Keller (1880 - 1968)
Face your deficiencies and acknowledge them; but do not let them master you. Let them teach you patience, sweetness, insight.

(From: Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890)
If one is master of one thing and understands one thing well, one has at the same time, insight into and understanding of many things.

(From: The RSV Bible - Corinthians II 5:5-8)
He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always of good courage; we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. We are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

(From: Fritjof Capra, physicist)
During periods of relaxation after concentrated intellectual activity, the intuitive mind seems to take over and can produce the sudden clarifying insights which give so much joy and delight.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #23)
If you open yourself to insight, you are at one with insight and you can use it completely.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-2)
Spiritual growth is first an awakening to needs, next a discernment of meanings, and then a discovery of values. The evidence of true spiritual development consists in the exhibition of a human personality motivated by love, activated by unselfish ministry, and dominated by the wholehearted worship of the perfection ideals of divinity. And this entire experience constitutes the reality of religion as contrasted with mere theological beliefs.

(From: Heclechora - 4/4/03– the S.E. Idaho TeaM)
… the most important consideration in this discussion of truth discernment has to do with motivation. For despite levels of discernment ability that are correlated with intelligence, intelligence alone is not sufficient. Motivation is a bigger key to unlock the door of truth. Jesus described this when he said, "Ask and you shall receive; knock and the door shall be opened to you". The motivation to search and seek after truth is the most important aspect.

(From: Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 - 1968)
The good neighbor looks beyond the external accidents and discerns those inner qualities that make all men human and, therefore, brothers.

(From: Carl Sandburg (1878 - 1967)
When a nation goes down, or a society perishes, one condition may always be found; they forgot where they came from. They lost sight of what had brought them along.

(From: Johnson)
The supreme end of education is expert discernment in all things--the power to tell the good from the bad, the genuine from the counterfeit, and to prefer the good and the genuine to the bad and the counterfeit.

The Sermon
***********
Seeing without awareness, leads to suspicion…
which generates more seeing without awareness, and leads to more suspicion…
which again and again generates more and more seeing without awareness, and leads to more and more suspicion…
which again and again and again and again generates…

Suspicion creates fear, which in turn fosters more suspicion, which…

It is a Vicious circle… a trap that the ego is easily trapped in, set by those who would manipulate and control for their own egotistical gain.

Does it sometimes feel like you are caught in the trap? 'Tis better to “chew your leg off” and escape, than to hope for mercy from the unmerciful. BUT… before ya' start gnawing on yourself… there Is another alternative escape from the trap of fear and suspicion, an antidote if you will (anti-venom is perhaps a better description in times such as these).

So how can one “Escape” or better yet Avoid the “Trap” altogether? It requires “Tools” that the ego does not possess. Even were ego given the Tools, it has not the capacity to use them for, they are Tools for the Soul in unison with Spirit.

The Tools are Insight, Understanding and Discernment.

Insight with Understanding, leads to Discernment…
which generates Greater Insight and Understanding, and leads a greater potential for Discernment…
which again and again generates Greater and Greater Insight and Understanding, and leads to the potential for more and more Discernment…
which again and again and again and again generates…

Discernment enables Love, which in turn fosters more Insight, Understanding and Discernment, which…

It is a Victorious circle, the True Circle of Light and Life and Love…

Do you ever feel trapped?
Do you like the feeling?
If not, then constantly and consciously seek the Alternative.

Dear God,
Let us no longer refuse to recognize Your Gifts of Insight, and replace our ego-centered suspicions with Soulful Discernment.

A husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day... 30,000 to a man's 15,000. The wife replied, "The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men.” The husband then turned to his wife and asked, "What?"

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.
Perhaps you have noticed that you received this Sunday Service on Saturday this week rather than on Sunday… well Saturday, Jill and I are flying to Laguna Beach, CA with our son Danny to perform the wedding of Jill's son Sean to the Love of his Life, Nancy. So with wedding preparations and the like, I didn't really have time to spend 6-8 hours doing the service while on the trip. So… Jill got inspired to do the Sunday Service during the past week and you're getting it a day early before we fly out of town. Hope you enjoy it! We will be back home in Post Falls late Tuesday evening.
I would like to Thank Jill for this Excellent and very Timely Sunday Service! It Really made me Think… and Feel!

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #464, is “feelings of helplessness”…

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
We have all been horrifically impacted by the human agony and devastation that Hurricane Katrina has caused. To see human devastation tears at the fiber of our very being. It stirs agonizing feelings of helplessness and powerlessness within us all.

This feeling of powerlessness and helplessness reminds me of the genius scientist (Arthur Mendelssohn), in the movie “Patch Adams,” when Patch meets him in the mental hospital. Mendelssohn presents Patch with a problem. He holds up four fingers and asks, “How many fingers do you see?” and Patch looks at his fingers and answers, “Four.” And the scientist screams in frustration, “No, no, no, No! Look at Me. You're focusing on the Problem. If you focus on the Problem, you can't See the solution. Never focus on the Problem. Look at ME. How many do you see? (Patch looks at his fingers again) No! Look Beyond the fingers. How many do you see?” And Patch stares at Arthur beyond the four fingers and suddenly he sees eight.

So…, what is Beyond the problem of Hurricane Katrina?

As I thought about this, it seemed to me that “our” problem, is the problem: How do we move beyond Our Feelings of utter helplessness in the plight of our brothers and sisters? That is the true problem, for each of Us. The “problem” is Not to solve Their problems, but to solve Our problem of Limited Thinking; thinking there is no way we individually can help. Only then can each of us begin to truly help. Together, in Higher Consciousness, we become All Power-Full, through Him, Our Father in Heaven.

Let us all join together in purposeful seeking of His Will for each of us in the way we can be a helper. Surely, just as the gifted scientist gets his or her creative “Ah Ha” from Our Creator, each of us will be able to see clearly and feel deeply the exact way we can help, Spiritually, through communion with Our Father.

“Eight…Eight…Yes, Yes! Eight's a Good Answer! See what no one Else sees. See what everyone else chooses Not to see… out of fear, conformity, laziness. See the whole world Anew Each Day!”

(From: The KJV Bible - Matthew 7:7-8)
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-144 Section-2) Again I say to you: Ask and it shall be given you; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you. For every one who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks the door of salvation will be opened.

Dear God,
Help each of us to recognize that our power to help others comes through You, and guide us in the way You would have each of us use our spirituality to be of help to our brothers and sisters in need. Amen.

May we all be active seekers of His Will for our individual spiritual role in helping others. Minister Jill

(From: Prophet Mohammed, Muslim & Bukhari)
Do you know what is better than charity and fasting and prayer? It is keeping peace and good relations between people, as quarrels and bad feelings destroy mankind.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Papers - Paper-157 Section-2)
"Do not allow yourselves to become blinded by prejudice and paralyzed by fear. Neither permit reverence for the traditions so to pervert your understanding that your eyes see not and your ears hear not. It is not the purpose of true religion merely to bring peace but rather to insure progress. And there can be no peace in the heart or progress in the mind unless you fall wholeheartedly in love with truth, the ideals of eternal realities. The issues of life and death are being set before you--the sinful pleasures of time against the righteous realities of eternity. Even now you should begin to find deliverance from the bondage of fear and doubt as you enter upon the living of the new life of faith and hope. And when the feelings of service for your fellow men arise within your soul, do not stifle them; when the emotions of love for your neighbor well up within your heart, give expression to such urges of affection in intelligent ministry to the real needs of your fellows."

(From: Robert C. Pollock)
Love God and trust your feelings. Be loyal to them. Don't betray them.

(From: The RSV Bible - John 13:34-35)
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-100 Section-4)
In physical life the senses tell of the existence of things; mind discovers the reality of meanings; but the spiritual experience reveals to the individual the true values of life. These high levels of human living are attained in the supreme love of God and in the unselfish love of man. If you love your fellow men, you must have discovered their values. Jesus loved men so much because he placed such a high value upon them. You can best discover values in your associates by discovering their motivation. If some one irritates you, causes feelings of resentment, you should sympathetically seek to discern his viewpoint, his reasons for such objectionable conduct. If once you understand your neighbor, you will become tolerant, and this tolerance will grow into friendship and ripen into love.

(From: Dale Carnegie)
It is the way we react to circumstances that determines our feelings.

(From: Anton Chekhov (1860 - 1904)
Perhaps the feelings that we experience when we are in love represent a normal state. Being in love shows a person who he should be.

(From: John Wooden)
Consider the rights of others before your own feelings, and the feelings of others before your own rights.

(From: Ham 3/17/2000 – the S.E. Idaho TeaM)
Indeed there are many who are beginning to understand that love is more a matter of the will than it is a matter of feelings. It is possible for you to choose to love. Your mortal flesh follows suit with feelings that you would normally attribute as affection.
Love is an attitude, an intention of service toward your brothers and sisters. Love is the desire to do good to others, and when it is wholly sincere, it will result in actions. You see, if love was based upon feelings it would be limited only to those you feel comfortable with and who you approve of. When our Master entreated us to love our enemies, he totally transcended the realm of feeling in terms of a door of entrance. If you are commanded to love your enemies and love were based upon your feelings, this would be totally absurd and impossible. We are enjoined to love our enemies. Therefor logically and truly this love is not ultimately or initially a matter of warm, fuzzy feelings. To love our enemies is to be God-like and to recognize that the status of “enemy” is in a large part, a perceptive category.

(From: Ovid (43 BC - 17 AD)
We are slow to believe that which if believed would hurt our feelings.

(From: The RSV Bible - Luke 6:35-38)
But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back."

If history repeats itself, and the unexpected always happens, how incapable must Man be of learning from experience.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within.

When I “got” the word Expectations for today's Service I thought, “Didn't I just do one on that topic?” So I went to the Archives at the web-site and looked over the Topics I had used since Father's Day…

Sunday Service, #453, was “Peace”…
Sunday Service, #454, was “The Eyes of the Soul”…
Sunday Service, #455, was “A View of Soul”…
Sunday Service, #456, was “Humility”…
Sunday Service, #457, was “Is This the best we can hope for?”…
Sunday Service, #458, was “Knowledge”…
Sunday Service, #459, was “Depth Perception”…
Sunday Service, #460, was “Image”…
Sunday Service, #461, was “The Test”…
Sunday Service, #462, was “Frustration”…
Sunday Service, #463, was “suspicion vs. Discernment”…
Sunday Service, #464, was “feelings of helplessness”…
Sunday Service, #465, was “Love 'n Feelings”…

Nope. It hasn't been That recently. And even so, this is a somewhat different perspective on “expectations” than I used the last time (whenever it was), So…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #466, is “Expectations”…

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-195 Section-9)
Descriptive words of things beautiful cannot thrill like the sight thereof, neither can creedal words inspire men's souls like the experience of knowing the presence of God. But expectant faith will ever keep the hope-door of man's soul open for the entrance of the eternal spiritual realities of the divine values of the worlds beyond.

(From: Horace (65 BC - 8 BC)
Life is largely a matter of expectation.

(From: Seneca (5 BC - 65 AD)
The greatest loss of time is delay and expectation, which depend upon the future. We let go the present, which we have in our power, and look forward to that which depends upon chance, and so relinquish a certainty for an uncertainty.

(From: Benjamin Disraeli (1804 - 1881)
What we anticipate seldom occurs: but what we least expect generally happens.

(From: Eric Hoffer (1902 - 1983)
They who lack talent expect things to happen without effort. They ascribe failure to a lack of inspiration or ability, or to misfortune, rather than to insufficient application. At the core of every true talent there is an awareness of the difficulties inherent in any achievement, and the confidence that by persistence and patience something worthwhile will be realized. Thus talent is a species of vigor.

(From: Madame Guizot)
Much misconstruction and bitterness are spared to him who thinks naturally upon what he owes to others rather than what he ought to expect from them.

(From: William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616)
Oft expectation fails, and most oft where most it promises; and oft it hits where hope is coldest; and despair most sits.

(From: Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862)
If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he imaged, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-191 Section-4)
Remember, even if prayer does not change God, it very often effects great and lasting changes in the one who prays in faith and confident expectation. Prayer has been the ancestor of much peace of mind, cheerfulness, calmness, courage, self-mastery, and fair-mindedness in the men and women of the evolving races.

The Sermon
***********
In this morning's “OK, give me a Topic” meditation/stillness, I was having a difficult time tuning out the internal dialogue (hate when That happens…), due to the Deck project I am building here this weekend. See, a couple a'few years ago, late 2001 actually, I donated my time doing a deck demolition for a family who were replacing it with a new composite deck. Then they donated the “Old” Redwood decking to Us. I had visions of doing an 8'X24' deck out in front of the residence. The old front deck (which came with the property) was well into the process of falling apart due to age and incorrect building practices. Well… with the lack of time and/or money… it never got done.

This past week I was looking at our back deck that our doggies use and noticed that it was so Badly constructed, plus rotted, that there was no way it would last another winter without us or our dogs getting hurt by it's collapse somehow. We decided to build our Deck out back for the dogs instead of out Front like originally planned back in 2001. I got plans from the internet and Friday I went and got all of the support and structural materials and took them to the back of the house for the project. Saturday morning I began tearing down/dismantling the back deck. Then I brought the old deck steps over by the door so we could temporarily get in and out (the door is 20” from the ground), while I built the deck.

Jill came out to see what I had accomplished so far, and somewhat jokingly (we had already changed plans and sizes of the back deck at least a half a dozen times in the last few days already---and spent many, many hours re-refiguring the materials list), said, “It looks pretty good back here without a deck… are you sure you don't want to just build it out front?” Acutely aware of all of the time already spent on drawing up all the different sets of plans and figuring All the different material lists… not to mention the fact that the sizes of lumber I had already purchased and hauled wouldn't work with the Deck we had wanted out front… I came so Close to saying, “No, the back is already figured and we already have the materials.” …but instead… I thought about it. The Front Deck, that we and everyone else sees and uses most is sagging fairly badly… possibly another year left in it give or take---but without anyone getting hurt though… The Front is where we really would have wanted it had the back deck not gotten so dangerous… The thought arose, “I've spent Days already getting ready for the Back deck and everything's in place and ready to build! It would be So Easy.”…but instead… I said, “Let's go measure and figure it out and see how much more it will cost… and if it's worth taking everything back and starting over.”

The Deck we had originally envisioned and desired for out front, was going to end up costing us $7.00 less than what we had already spent for the deck out back. GO FIGURE!!! All I had to do was re-load most of the materials I had bought and unloaded the day before back onto my truck and head on back to Home Depot

The rest of Saturday, I spent re-loading and returning most of what I bought on Friday… then buying and taking home the new materials for our New Front Entry Deck… just like what we had first envisioned, expected and Hoped for back in 2001 when this all started.

Necessity and Willingness to compromise my original expectations for the safety of my loved ones had started me into action…

The Back yard Was a Priority…

Take a bad deck down, put a new, safe and better deck up. (right?)…

But… just stairs and a bigger back yard opens up new possibilities…

Complete the Original Vision first now that we're already on a roll?

Hmmm…

We'd been silently praying for years for the ways and means of getting the Front done, but the answer never appeared obvious…

It Probably would have taken another four years to get to the front had I not been forced by the dangerous condition of the back to get intellectually and physically in motion.

God always answers our prayers.

Rarely in the timeframe and exact manner of our Expectations though…

What if my Only “Expectation” was that, as a Child of God, my Divine Parent WILL provide for me everything that I really Need and, if it's not harmful to me or others, most of what I really Want and, at Exactly the Perfect time for all concerned? For those who really Know and Love and Trust God, that's a pretty Reasonable Expectation… Isn't it? It's something I've rather come to Count on over the past decade or so… well… for the most part, anyway.

Things aren't quite so disappointing when they don't seem to work out as expected IF, I realize that, “Oh! It's not the Perfect Time yet!”

When “the Perfect Time” Does eventually come, “the Answer” Invariably comes out being Better than what I originally thought I was Praying for (If I take the time and effort to recognize and Remember it).
Only ego will give up or destroy Hope through Impatience and crystallized Expectations.

Soul and Spirit just Wait for the Right Time.

The Prayer

Dear God,
It's pretty Funny… the Paths You have to lead me down to get me where I really Want to go. In retrospect anyway…

You ALL are Within the Infinitely Loving Embrace of our Universal
Parent,

The Creator's Infinite Love to all of You,
Pastor Daniel
