Genuine goodness is threatening to those at the opposite end of the moral spectrum.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within. You are the Temple. You are the Congregation. Any and All Truth is the Gospel. The Divine Spirit within you is your True Minister.

Well, this is not an unfamiliar topic here so I went through the archives to see how recently I had used it and saw that I hadn't used it yet this year… Seeing as how we are already into the 9
th month of 2011, it doesn't seem to me too repetitive to go ahead and use it again today…

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #776, is Goodness…

Quotes
*******
(From: The RSV Bible -
Psalm 23)
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want; he makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-2 Section-7)
The religious challenge of this age is to those farseeing and forward-looking men and women of spiritual insight who will dare to construct a new and appealing philosophy of living out of the enlarged and exquisitely integrated modern concepts of cosmic truth, universe beauty, and divine goodness. Such a new and righteous vision of morality will attract all that is good in the mind of man and challenge that which is best in the human soul. Truth, beauty, and goodness are divine realities, and as man ascends the scale of spiritual living, these supreme qualities of the Eternal become increasingly co-ordinated and unified in God, who is love.

(From:
Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)

The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me with the joy of living are goodness, beauty, and truth. To make a goal of comfort or happiness has never appealed to me; a system of ethics built on this basis would be sufficient only for a herd of cattle.

(From: Meladee McCarty)
Live your life as though there is great joy to be experienced... an abundance of goodness in each person you come in contact with, and the knowledge that you have enough inner wisdom to answer the mysteries that challenge you.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-100 Section-2)
Spirituality becomes at once the indicator of one's nearness to God and the measure of one's usefulness to fellow beings. Spirituality enhances the ability to discover beauty in things, recognize truth in meanings, and discover goodness in values. Spiritual development is determined by capacity therefor and is directly proportional to the elimination of the selfish qualities of love.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #27)
A good traveler has no fixed plans
and is not intent upon arriving.
A good artist lets his intuition
lead him wherever it wants.
A good scientist has freed himself of concepts
and keeps his mind open to what is.

(From: Sue Patton Thoele, The Courage To Be Yourself Journal)
At the center of each human heart is goodness, layered over with hurt, confusion, and mistaken ideas. Our task is to gently peel off layer after layer until the unfettered heart can shed its love upon the world.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-102 Section-3)
Religious experience is the realization of the consciousness of having found God. And when a human being does find God, there is experienced within the soul of that being such an indescribable restlessness of triumph in discovery that he is impelled to seek loving service-contact with his less illuminated fellows, not to disclose that he has found God, but rather to allow the overflow of the welling-up of eternal goodness within his own soul to refresh and ennoble his fellows. Real religion leads to increased social service.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #8)
The supreme good is like water,
which nourishes all things without trying to.
It is content with the low places that people disdain.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-131 Section-8)
True goodness is like water in that it blesses everything and harms nothing. And like water, true goodness seeks the lowest places, even those levels which others avoid, and that is because it is akin to the Supreme.

(From: Emanuel Swedenborg (1688 - 1772)
You are not made happy by the true things you believe from your faith, but by the goodness which comes from your faith.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-56 Section-10)
The recognition of goodness implies a mind of moral status, a personal mind with ability to discriminate between good and evil. But the possession of goodness, greatness, is the measure of real divinity attainment.

(From: Alfred A. Montapert)
The main source of our wealth is goodness. The affections and the generous qualities that God admires in a world full of greed.

(From: Heloise (1098 - 1164), Letter)
Riches and power are but gifts of blind fate, whereas goodness is the result of one's own merits.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-28 Section-6)
The more steadfastly you behold, and the more persistently you pursue, the concepts of divine goodness, the more certainly will you grow in greatness, in true magnitude of genuine survival character.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #49 )
The Master has no mind of her own.
She works with the mind of the people.

She is good to people who are good.
She is also good to people who aren't good.
This is true goodness.

(From: Euripides (484 BC - 406 BC), Temenidae)
When good men die their goodness does not perish,
But lives though they are gone.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-48 Section-6)
No act of good is ever wholly lost; it may be long thwarted but never wholly annulled, and it is eternally potent in proportion to the divinity of its motivation.

(From: Lao-tse)
"Goodness begets goodness, but to the one who is truly good, evil also begets goodness."

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-156 Section-5)
As the days pass, every true believer becomes more skillful in alluring his fellows into the love of eternal truth. Are you more resourceful in revealing goodness to humanity today than you were yesterday? Are you a better righteousness recommender this year than you were last year? Are you becoming increasingly artistic in your technique of leading hungry souls into the spiritual kingdom?

The Sermon
***********
Goodness…

We all recognize it when we see it right?
And we see a lot more of it when we actually Look for it, don't we?
Do we see as much of it as we would like to?
Do we look for it as much as we aught to?

How often do you think to look for Goodness in yourself?
You Do look for it there don't you?
Do not ever be afraid that you will not find any when you look… it is there I can assure you.
Go ahead, take a look right now…

Start with your true inner motives…
Are your Motives Good?
How about your Intentions… any Goodness there?
(I hope you said yes to both of those. ;-)

Too often we judge ourselves only on the end results of our efforts… forgetting about the motivations that initiated them. Often it is much easier to see the Goodness in others than in ourselves, don't you Think? Why is that so I wonder? Guess we just don't think to Look for it in ourselves often enough perhaps??

When you observe an example of Goodness in yourself, it really feels good, doesn't it? It can be in appreciation of one or more of your abilities, arts, talents… They are some of your Gifts from God and one can not reasonably deny the Goodness of any of God's Gifts now can they? It can also be in recognition of your desire to Love and to Serve others, for that as well is God Inspired Goodness.

To Love and to Serve!
Oh… For Goodness Sake!!

(From:
Reed Markham, Author, Effective Speechwriting)

Successful innovators recognize that discovery of great ideas come from looking at the same thing as everyone else and observing something different.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-112 Section-2)
In science the human self observes the material world; philosophy is the observation of this observation of the material world; religion, true spiritual experience, is the experiential realization of the cosmic reality of the observation of the observation of all this relative synthesis of the energy materials of time and space.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #12)
The Master observes the world
but trusts his inner vision.
He allows things to come and go.
His heart is open as the sky.

(From: The RSV Bible - Psalm 106:3)
Blessed are they who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times!

(From: John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873)
He who lets the world, or his own portion of it, choose his plan of life for him, has no need of any other faculty than the ape-like one of imitation. He who chooses his plan for himself, employs all his faculties. He must use observation to see, reasoning and judgment to foresee, activity to gather materials for decision, discrimination to decide, and when he has decided, firmness and self-control to hold to his deliberate decision.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-179 Section-3)
He who would be great among you, let him become as the younger; while he who would be chief, let him become as one who serves. Who is the greater, he who sits at meat, or he who serves? Is it not commonly regarded that he who sits at meat is the greater? But you will observe that I am among you as one who serves. If you are willing to become fellow servants with me in doing the Father's will, in the kingdom to come you shall sit with me in power, still doing the Father's will in future glory."

(From: Hasidic Saying)
Everyone should carefully observe which way his heart draws him, and then choose that way with all his strength.

(From:
Maria Montessori (1870 - 1952)

The teacher must derive not only the capacity, but the desire, to observe natural phenomena. The teacher must understand and feel her position of observer: the activity must lie in the phenomenon.

(From: Marilyn vos Savant)
To acquire knowledge, one must study; but to acquire wisdom, one must observe.

(From: Louis Pasteur (1822 – 1895)
In the field of observation, chance favors only the prepared mind.

(From: W. Beran Wolfe)
If you observe a really happy man, you will find... that he is happy in the course of living life twenty-four crowded hours each day.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-102 Section-2)
Observing minds and discriminating souls know religion when they find it in the lives of their fellows.

(From: Kathryn L. Nelson, Pemberley Manor, 2006)
Sometimes it is the quiet observer who see the most.

(From: Buddha)
Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-146 Section-3)
"While you cannot observe the divine spirit at work in your minds, there is a practical method of discovering the degree to which you have yielded the control of your soul powers to the teaching and guidance of this indwelling spirit of the heavenly Father, and that is the degree of your love for your fellow men. This spirit of the Father partakes of the love of the Father, and as it dominates man, it unfailingly leads in the directions of divine worship and loving regard for one's fellows.

(From: Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803 - 1873)
Every man who observes vigilantly, and resolves steadfastly, grows unconsciously into genius.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
An Observer looks not to find proof.
An Observer looks simply for the Truth.

Do you ever attempt to truly Observe yourself? It's not always so easy, is it? It is often very difficult for the self to differentiate between a reason and an excuse… and excuses are never a result of true Observation. Reasons can be Observed, discovered, discerned… excuses are only made.

Observing yourself is actually achievable and indeed a healthy exercise on occasion… when your goal is but to see the Truth.

The minister's little six-year-old girl had been so naughty during the week, that her mother decided to give her the worst kind of punishment. She told her she couldn't go to the Sunday School Picnic on Saturday.
Then, when the day came, her mother felt she had been too harsh and changed her mind. When she told the little girl she could go to the picnic, the child's reaction was one of gloom and unhappiness.
"What's the matter? I thought you'd be glad to go to the picnic." her mother said.
"It's too late!" the little girl said. "I've already prayed for rain!"

Sara B. Cooper, House, 2004)

You can't be angry with God and not believe in him at the same time.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-188 Section-4)
Jesus taught that service to one's fellows is the highest concept of the brotherhood of spirit believers. Salvation should be taken for granted by those who believe in the fatherhood of God. The believer's chief concern should not be the selfish desire for personal salvation but rather the unselfish urge to love and, therefore, serve one's fellows even as Jesus loved and served mortal men.

(From: The RSV Bible - John 12:36)
While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light."

(From:
George E. Woodberry)

If you can't have faith in what is held up to you for faith, you must find things to believe in yourself, for a life without faith in something is too narrow a space to live.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-103 Section-8)
The certainty of the God-knowing religionist should not be disturbed by the uncertainty of the doubting materialist; rather should the uncertainty of the unbeliever be mightily challenged by the profound faith and unshakable certainty of the experiential believer.

(From: George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950), "Mrs. Warren's Profession")
People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them.

(From: Ugo Betti, Struggle Till Dawn)
When you want to believe in something, you also have to believe in everything that's necessary for believing in it.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-101 Section-9)
True religion is that sublime and profound conviction within the soul which compellingly admonishes man that it would be wrong for him not to believe in those morontial realities which constitute his highest ethical and moral concepts, his highest interpretation of life's greatest values and the universe's deepest realities. And such a religion is simply the experience of yielding intellectual loyalty to the highest dictates of spiritual consciousness.

(From: Frank Zappa (1940 - 1993)
Everybody believes in something and everybody, by virtue of the fact that they believe in something, use that something to support their own existence.

(From: Frank Lloyd Wright (1869 - 1959)
The thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in a thing makes it happen.

(From: Benjamin Disraeli (1804 - 1881)
Nurture your mind with great thoughts; to believe in the heroic makes heroes.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-141 Section-2)
“Verily, verily, I say to you, when the Father's will is your law, you are hardly in the kingdom. But when the Father's will becomes truly your will, then are you in very truth in the kingdom because the kingdom has thereby become an established experience in you. When God's will is your law, you are noble slave subjects; but when you believe in this new gospel of divine sonship, my Father's will becomes your will, and you are elevated to the high position of the free children of God, liberated sons of the kingdom.”

(From: E E Cummings (1894 - 1962)
Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.

(From: Lao-tzu (604 BC - 531 BC), The Way of Lao-tzu)
When the highest type of men hear Tao,
They diligently practice it.
When the average type of men hear Tao,
They half believe in it.
When the lowest type of men hear Tao,
They laugh heartily at it.
Without the laugh, there is no Tao.

(From: The NKJV Bible - John 14:1)
"Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. "In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

(From: Louisa May Alcott (1832 - 1888)
Far away in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.

(From: Freya Madeline Stark)
There can be no happiness if the things we believe in are different from the things we do.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-196 Section-0)
Jesus does not require his disciples to believe in him but rather to believe with him, believe in the reality of the love of God and in full confidence accept the security of the assurance of sonship with the heavenly Father.

(From: Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 - 1962)
The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

(From: C. S. Lewis (1898 - 1963)
I believe in God like I believe in the sun, not because I can see it, but because of it all things are seen.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-101 Section-1)
The experience of religion eventually results in the certain consciousness of God and in the undoubted assurance of the survival of the believing personality.
Thus it may be seen that religious longings and spiritual urges are not of such a nature as would merely lead men to want to believe in God, but rather are they of such nature and power that men are profoundly impressed with the conviction that they ought to believe in God. The sense of evolutionary duty and the obligations consequent upon the illumination of revelation make such a profound impression upon man's moral nature that he finally reaches that position of mind and that attitude of soul where he concludes that he has no right not to believe in God.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-144 Section-4)
In all praying, remember that sonship is a gift. No child has aught to do with earning the status of son or daughter. The earth child comes into being by the will of its parents. Even so, the child of God comes into grace and the new life of the spirit by the will of the Father in heaven. Therefore must the kingdom of heaven--divine sonship--be received as by a little child. You earn righteousness--progressive character development--but you receive sonship by grace and through faith.

(From: Phillips Brooks (1835 - 1893)
Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be the miracle.

(From: The ASB Bible - Corinthians I 15:10)
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-150 Section-9)
“The transformations of grace are wrought in response to the living faith of those who are the beneficiaries.”

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-176 Section-3)
“You cannot stand still in the affairs of the eternal kingdom. My Father requires all his children to grow in grace and in a knowledge of the truth. You who know these truths must yield the increase of the fruits of the spirit and manifest a growing devotion to the unselfish service of your fellow servants. And remember that, inasmuch as you minister to one of the least of my brethren, you have done this service to me.”

(From: Helen Keller (1880 - 1968)
When we do the best that we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life, or in the life of another.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-48 Section-7)
Few mortals ever dare to draw anything like the sum of personality credits established by the combined ministries of nature and grace. The majority of impoverished souls are truly rich, but they refuse to believe it.

(From: Hugh Elliott, Standing Room Only weblog, May 6, 2003)
Miracles: You do not have to look for them. They are there, 24-7, beaming like radio waves all around you. Put up the antenna, turn up the volume - snap... crackle... this just in, every person you talk to is a chance to change the world...

(From: Samuel Smiles)
Hope is the companion of power, and mother of success; for who so hopes strongly has within him the gift of miracles.

(From: H. G. Wells (1866 - 1946)
We must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind us to the fact that each moment of life is a miracle and mystery.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-038 Section-8)
Jesus did not speak like a prophet, one who comes to declare the word of God. He seemed to speak of himself as one having authority. Jesus sought to divert their minds from miracle seeking to the finding of a real and personal experience in the satisfaction and assurance of the indwelling of God's spirit of love and saving grace.

(From: Marina Arroyo)
There is no such thing as making the miracle happen spontaneously and on the spot. You've got to work.

(From: Dean Koontz)
I believe in the possibility of miracles but more to the point, I believe in our need for them.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-2 Section-4)
God is inherently kind, naturally compassionate, and everlastingly merciful. And never is it necessary that any influence be brought to bear upon the Father to call forth his loving-kindness. The creature's need is wholly sufficient to insure the full flow of the Father's tender mercies and his saving grace. Since God knows all about his children, it is easy for him to forgive. The better man understands his neighbor, the easier it will be to forgive him, even to love him.

(From:
G. K. Chesterton (1874 - 1936)

The most astonishing thing about miracles is that they happen.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Many people seem to be always looking for that Instantaneous Miracle, don't they… like Miracles are some sort of magic or something? If it doesn't happen that way, well… then… it's just not a real Miracle Right? Many sincere churchgoing people fall into this category. Not their fault really… many churches teach them that viewpoint, as if it's some kind of proof of something.

Many others see Everything as being a Miracle. Well… I have great deal of difficulty in trying to fault them for That Perspective. To a human being, God's reality is in every Way Miraculous from the incomparable grandeur of the cosmos to the perfect harmony and symmetry of the subatomic. No argument here… “It's a Miracle!”

Is there an in-between? Well of Course there is… but you knew that right? You can probably come up with More than a couple, can't you? Specifically I'm talking about the ones that unfold over a measure of time… could be hours, days, months… even years. There may be a series of components that must be in position before the Miracle is even Possible… some you must put into place and/or some that others must contribute… let's call them Miracles in Progress. The fun thing about them is that we get to participate… our participation may even be required. Faith and Hope make them possible… your effort and God's gifts of Grace make them Happen. Are they still Miracles if you have to work for them? I guess it depends on how you look at it, doesn't it?

Life is a Miracle. Live the Miracle.
