If wisdom were on sale in the open market,
the stupid would not even ask the price.

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to the Church that is Within. You are the Temple. You are the Congregation. Any and All Truth is the Gospel. The Divine Spirit within you is your True Minister.

Two different things yet indissolubly linked...

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #985, is Wisdom/Maturity…

Quotes

(From: The ASB Bible - Corinthians I 2:6)
Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away;

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-110 Section-6)
The growth of the parts does not equal the true maturation of the whole; the parts really grow in proportion to the expansion of the entire self—the whole self—material, intellectual, and spiritual.

(From: The Tao Te Ching - #41 )
The path into the light seems dark,
the path forward seems to go back,
the direct path seems long,
true power seems weak,
true purity seems tarnished,
true steadfastness seems changeable,
true clarity seems obscure,
the greatest are seems unsophisticated,
the greatest love seems indifferent,
the greatest wisdom seems childish.

(From: N. Sri Ram )
There is no wisdom without love.

(From: Erich Fromm (1900 - 1980 )
Immature love says, "I love you because I need you." Mature love says, "I need you because I love you."

(From: The RSV Bible - James 1:5-6)
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all men generously and without reproaching, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-118 Section-1)
To become mature is to live more intensely in the present, at the same time escaping from the limitations of the present. The plans of maturity, founded on past experience, are coming into being in the present in such manner as to enhance the values of the future.

(From: Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742 - 1799 )
One's first step in wisdom is to question everything - and one's last is to come to terms with everything.

(From: Alfred North Whitehead (1861 - 1947 )
Wisdom alone is true ambition's aim
Wisdom the source of virtue, and of fame,
Obtained with labor, for mankind employed,
And then, when most you share it, best enjoyed.

(From: The KJV Bible - James 3:17-18)
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

(From: Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862)
It is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things.

(From: Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962 )
Knowledge can be communicated, but wisdom cannot. A man can find it, he can live it, he can be filled and sustained by it, but he cannot utter or teach it.

(From: Jimi Hendrix (1942 - 1970 )
Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.

(From: Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809 - 1892 )
Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers.

(From: Paul Tillich (1886 - 1965 )
The awareness of the ambiguity of one's highest achievements (as well as one's deepest failures) is a definite symptom of maturity.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-118 Section-1)
In the maturity of the developing self, the past and future are brought together to illuminate the true meaning of the present. As the self matures, it reaches further and further back into the past for experience, while its wisdom forecasts seek to penetrate deeper and deeper into the unknown future. And as the conceiving self extends this reach ever further into both past and future, so does judgment become less and less dependent on the momentary present. In this way does decision-action begin to escape from the fetters of the moving present, while it begins to take on the aspects of past-future significance.
Patience is exercised by those mortals whose time units are short; true maturity transcends patience by a forbearance born of real understanding.
To become mature is to live more intensely in the present, at the same time escaping from the limitations of the present. The plans of maturity, founded on past experience, are coming into being in the present in such manner as to enhance the values of the future.

(From: J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye)
The mark of an immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of a mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one.

(From: Rabbi Ben-Azai )
In seeking wisdom thou are wise; in imagining that thou hast attained it thou are a fool.

Does Wisdom lead to Maturity?
or...
Does Maturity lead to Wisdom?

Undeniably, the answer is...

Yes

Sometimes when I am driving I get so angry at inconsiderate drivers that I want to scream at them. But then I remember how insignificant that is, and I thank God that I have a car and my health and gas. That was phrased wrong - normally you wouldn't say, thank God I have gas.

Quotes
*******
(From: The Book of Runes - # 7R )

When something within us is disowned, that which is disowned wreaks havoc. A cleansing is required here. In undertaking it you fund a will to strengthen character. Begin with what is most difficult and proceed to what is easy. Or, conversely, begin with what is easy and proceed to what is most difficult. Either way, remember that “suffering” in its original sense here meant “undergoing.” Thus, you are required to undergo the dark side of your passage and bring it into the Light. Resolving your anger, restraining your impulses, keeping your faith firm---all this is at issue here. Modesty and good temper are essential at such a time.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-149 Section-4)
“Anger is a material manifestation which represents, in a general way, the measure of the failure of the spiritual nature to gain control of the combined intellectual and physical natures.

(From: Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC )
When anger rises, think of the consequences.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-48 Section-7)
Impatience is a spirit poison; anger is like a stone hurled into a hornet's nest.

(From: Buddha (563 BC - 483 BC )
Holding onto anger is like grasping onto a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else. You are the one who gets burned.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-131 Section-3)
Let not anger and hate master you. Speak harshly of no one. Contentment is the greatest wealth. What is given wisely is well saved. Do not to others those things you would not wish done to you. Pay good for evil; overcome evil with the good.

(From: William Arthur Ward )
It is wise to direct your anger towards problems -- not people; to focus your energies on answers -- not excuses.

(From: W. Somerset Maugham (1874 - 1965 )
You are not angry with people when you laugh at them. Humor teaches tolerance.

(From: The RSV Bible - Ephesians 4:31-5:1)
Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

(From: “Jesus” - The Urantia Book - Paper-149 Section-4)
“Let your hearts be so dominated by love that your spirit guide will have little trouble in delivering you from the tendency to give vent to those outbursts of animal anger which are inconsistent with the status of divine sonship.”
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.

(From: The RSV Bible - James 1:19-20)
Know this, my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, for the anger of man does not work the righteousness of God.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-140 Section-5)
Being sensitive and responsive to human need creates genuine and lasting happiness, while such kindly attitudes safeguard the soul from the destructive influences of anger, hate, and suspicion.

(From: Epictetus (55 AD - 135 AD )
If you would cure anger, do not feed it. Say to yourself: 'I used to be angry every day; then every other day; now only every third or fourth day.' When you reach thirty days offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the gods.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-194 Section-3)
Pentecost endowed mortal man with the power to forgive personal injuries, to keep sweet in the midst of the gravest injustice, to remain unmoved in the face of appalling danger, and to challenge the evils of hate and anger by the fearless acts of love and forbearance.

*******************************************
The Sermon
***********
Do you ever get Angry?
Yeah... Me Neither!

Well, maybe once in a while... but I don't see myself as an Angry person, you? I mean, other people rarely See me angry unless of course I am driving and they are riding with me. People that don't know how to drive or that put others in danger anger me. I haven't learned how to let that Anger go yet. People who watch the news with me might see me Angry... watching the powerful take advantage of everyone who isn't Angers me. Hatred, prejudice, injustice, cruelty, intolerance... those things Anger me. Sometimes I can separate the action from the person and forgive the person but be Angered by the act, though I haven't mastered that completely yet. How about you?

When I'm in pain, or late, or exhausted, and every nearby inanimate object seems to conspire against me to cause more pain, or lateness, or exhaustion... these things seem to Anger me the Most! If I saw the same stuff happening to someone else in a movie I would probably laugh uproariously, but while it is happening to me in the moment, I just can't seem to see the humor in it. That kind of Anger goes away more quickly than the kind where other people are involved.

How do you deal with your own Anger?

If I could remember it in the moment, maybe Prayer would help... I think maybe I'll have to try it next time.

The topic of today's Sunday Service, #987, is Mother Teresa…

The Sermon
***********
Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997), has been a hero of mine since I was young in body as well as Spirit. ;-) Having gone to Parochial school for 12 years, it wasn't unusual for me to hear about many of the things that she did in her life. They were things that impressed me, that spoke volumes to my young growing Soul.

All through catholic grade school, I always would go to the daily church services (to avoid doing schoolwork while waiting for classes to start ;-) While there I would talk to Jesus and God during the quiet times and I always felt that I could hear, rather feel them communicating with me. Jesus more so than God because I still, then, saw God as way far off... Jesus was much closer for me and in my heart and soul, I Knew Him well, and his Love. This occasionally got me into trouble as some of the things that the teachers taught about Jesus were inconsistent with Jesus as I personally knew him. This was confusing to me because the nuns and priests were supposed to be the experts.

What I heard of Mother Teresa... now She Really seemed to Know the Jesus that I Knew!! She never seemed to vary in her understanding of Jesus Love and this is why she very early became a hero of mine. She seemed to consistently act the way Jesus would act.

50+ years later Mother Teresa is Still a Hero and an Inspiration to me.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from her:

(All Quotes From: Mother Teresa (1910 - 1997)

“Whether one is Hindu or a Muslim or a Christian, how you live your life is proof that you are or not fully His. We cannot condemn or judge or pass words that will hurt people. We don't know in what way God is appearing to that soul and what God is drawing that soul to; therefore, who are we to condemn anybody?

“I never look at the masses as my responsibility; I look at the individual. I can only love one person at a time - just one, one, one. So you begin. I began - I picked up one person. Maybe if I didn't pick up that one person, I wouldn't have picked up forty-two thousand....The same thing goes for you, the same thing in your family, the same thing in your church, your community. Just begin - one, one, one.”

“Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.”

“We may not be able to give much but we can always give the joy that springs in a heart that is in love with God.”

“Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls.”

“The success of love is in the loving - it is not in the result of loving. Of course it is natural in love to want the best for the other person, but whether it turns out that way or not does not determine the value of what we have done.”

“When you look at the inner workings of electrical things, you see wires. Until the current passes through them, there will be no light. That wire is you and me. The current is God. We have the power to let the current pass through us, use us, to produce the light of the world, Jesus, in us. Or we can refuse to be used and allow darkness to spread.”

“What we say does not matter - only what God says to souls through us.”

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered; Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway.

“May today be peace within. May you trust your highest power that you are exactly where you are meant to be... May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you... May you be content knowing you are a child of God... Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love. It is there for each and every one of you.”

A grandfather was walking through his yard when he heard his granddaughter repeating the alphabet in a tone of voice that sounded like a prayer. He asked her what she was doing. The little girl explained: "I'm praying, but I can't think of exactly the right words, so I'm just saying all the letters, and God will put them together for me, because He knows what I'm thinking."

(From: The NASB Bible - Matthew 7:7-11)
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!

(From: Soren Kierkegaard (1813 - 1855 )
Prayer does not change God, but changes him who prays.

(From: Hippocrates (460 BC - 377 BC )
Prayer indeed is good, but while calling on the gods a man should himself lend a hand.

(From: Oprah Winfrey (1954 - ), Stanford Commencement Adress, 2008 )
My constant prayer for myself is to be used in service for the greater good.

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 21:22)
And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.

(From: Rich Mullins )
We never understand what we're praying; and God, in His mercy, does not answer our prayers according to our understanding, but according to His wisdom.

(From: The Urantia Book - Paper-146 Section-2)
The sincerity of any prayer is the assurance of its being heard; the spiritual wisdom and universe consistency of any petition is the determiner of the time, manner, and degree of the answer.

The Sermon
***********
When I was young, I used to wonder why some prayers got answered, while others went seemingly unnoticed. Do you ever wonder about that?

You ever have one of those times when something Really Good happens to you and you say to yourself, "This was the answer to a prayer!"? I had one of those happen to me a while back, and then all of a sudden I realized that it was something I had first prayed for a Long, Long time ago... when I was quite young. I also remembered at the time, a variety of other times in my life when I had prayed for essentially the same thing... using different words perhaps, maybe even thinking I was praying for something entirely different each time... but the answer when it finally came, truly was the answer to each and every one of those petitions. I remember thinking how fortunate I was that it was answered “now” rather than when I first had prayed for it. Now... when I can the better appreciate it. Now... when I can the better benefit by it. Now... when I can honestly and truly say, "It was Worth the wait." Did God just not answer my earlier prayers, or was I maybe just not ready yet then for the answer? Or... was this Indeed “The Answer” to that first Prayer from so very long ago? God answers our Prayers when the time is Right! It shouldn't really matter to us if the answer is received immediately or 40 or more years later, should it?

That showed me a new way to pray that works Every Time. I pray now for God's Will to be manifest in my life. Rather than telling God what the answer to my prayer should look like, I ask what it Should look like. Amazing the answers that are revealed, and so often in retrospect, the perfectness of God's Timing in their unfolding. Sure, they're seldom what or when I Imagined they might be... but you know? They always turn out Better than I Could have hoped them to be. It's almost like God only wants Everything that is Best for me.

Suppose?
