Today's Service is offered by: Minister Tom Newbill

Welcome by: Pastor Daniel

Greetings my Beloved Sisters and Brothers, and welcome once again to The Church that is Within.

Last night, a bunch of friends got together at our place, one of whom was Minister Tom Newbill. Since it has been a long time since we have had a Sunday Service from Tom, I finagled him into spending the night on our futon couch/bed and doing this morning's service with me. He dictated… I typed. 'Course we worked together a little on the “Quotes”, but the rest is Classic “ Minister Tom”.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-181 Section-2)
[ed: Said Jesus to one of his apostles…]
“Whether your ministry be long or short, possess your soul in patience. When the new teacher comes, let him teach you the poise of compassion and that sympathetic tolerance which is born of sublime confidence in me and of perfect submission to the Father's will. Dedicate your life to the demonstration of that combined human affection and divine dignity of the God-knowing and Son-believing disciple. And all who thus live will reveal the gospel even in the manner of their death. You and your brother John will go different ways, and one of you may sit down with me in the eternal kingdom long before the other. It would help you much if you would learn that true wisdom embraces discretion as well as courage. You should learn sagacity to go along with your aggressiveness.”

(From: St. Francis of Assisi)
“Preach the Gospel at All times. Use words if necessary.”

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-180 Section-5)
And all this clearly indicates the difference between the old religion and the new. The old religion taught self-sacrifice; the new religion teaches only self-forgetfulness, enhanced self-realization in conjoined social service and universe comprehension. The old religion was motivated by fear-consciousness; the new gospel of the kingdom is dominated by truth-conviction, the spirit of eternal and universal truth. And no amount of piety or creedal loyalty can compensate for the absence in the life experience of kingdom believers of that spontaneous, generous, and sincere friendliness which characterizes the spirit-born sons of the living God. Neither tradition nor a ceremonial system of formal worship can atone for the lack of genuine compassion for one's fellows.

(From: Minister Tom Newbill)

The Sermon
***********
Once upon a time, back when I was a kid about 6… 6:30, I leapt out of bed, threw on my shoes and clothes, and I ran outside and grabbed the newspaper for the classifieds. The occasion for all this revelry? The Friday Morning Garage Sale! Normally, I commence my day by reviewing my favorite spiritual affirmations with the Father, and then spend some time in the Silence listening. As I hurried down the highway with the thrill of the “yard sale” coursing through my veins, I was suddenly made aware of a startling observation. “What if I approached Service to the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man with the Same Zeal?” Slowly a feeling of shame came over me as I realized my priorities were slightly askew. When was the last time I had awoken at such an early hour to serve the Father with the same Fervor.

My shame was short-lived, as a small voice reminded me of an experience I had had a few days earlier. A fellow garage “sailor” named Rick stopped me on the street and said, “I just came from a Great Sale about ten miles out in the country with Lots of Fishing Gear.” He said, “The sale starts Friday, so ya better get out there before everything's gone, and by the way, the old man is dying of cancer so everything's pretty cheap.”

Soon I am tearing up the road at breakneck speed, my mind “hooked” on visions of rare spoils to be had for a song. Presently a new concept hit me. “How can I justify bargaining with a dying man?” Again a slight feeling of shame overcame me until a small inner voice, once again said, “Perhaps as a Minister, you might bring Him a small gift.” While these conflicting thoughts fought it out, I pulled in the driveway. Nobody home. “Probably at the doctors.” I reasoned, as I could postpone this conflict for another day.

Sure enough, the next morning at 6:30am I find myself racing up the dirt road toward the same place, only This time, I asked Father to use me as He saw fit. I pulled in the driveway and was met by a chorus of barks from the aging watchdogs. A lady came out and I sheepishly explained my early presence at the yard sale, and she reluctantly admitted me to the garage. Shortly my pickup was full and she asked me if I was interested in a “home gym setup” which cost $1000. new, and I could have it for Fifty Bucks. I hate exercise as much as cold water, but… “Fifty Bucks?” I heard myself saying, “Well, let's look at it.” She headed for the house and I followed wondering, “Why am I looking at this contraption?” We entered and she headed for the basement saying, “Follow me.”

For some reason, I glances to my left into a spacious living room, and there in a stuffed chair sat an elderly man staring at a TV set, wrapped in a quilt with a feeding tube in his stomach. I quickly walked to his side, sat down on the edge of the fireplace and had a lively discussion with him for some ten minutes. He told me he was off of Chemo Therapy and hoped to be one of the 3% that makes it. I told him I was a Minister… a Lay Minister of course… No parish, and said, “We better lay some Hands on here.” …and grabbed his huge, gnarly, calloused hands, which he readily volunteered, and said a short prayer for healing. At that moment I knew why I was at the yard sale and choked out a teary “Amen.” We chatted for a few more minutes and then I followed his wife down to the basement to look at the 'Home Gym'. It Was a great buy, but was not what I came for, so I said, “I'll tell my neighbor, maybe he'll be interested.”

On the way out the front door I glanced over and gave “Duane” a Big Thumbs-Up and a “Get well Soon… ya Hear?” He broke into a big smile and I was gone.

I didn't drive as fast on the way home, and as I ambled slowly down the dirt road feasting on the gorgeous Idaho mountains, I had a different feeling, I felt… I felt a new Calm and Peace. The thrill of the yard sale could actually co-exist with the Thrill of Service. I wouldn't trade that feeling for everything in Duane's garage. I hadn't done anything but “Be a Light”, and it was Effortless, Simple and Fulfilling.

Well, I got home and as usual, my next-door neighbor came over to “view my spoils.” It turned out, a $10. cardboard box contained several hundred dollars worth of Great Fishing Gear. My neighbor was almost envious and as I relayed the “Story of Duane” he suddenly got some tears in his eyes and told me, “Tommy, I just had a spiritual Rush.” Now, my neighbor is kind of a rough individual, having made his living hustling “Pool” for many years and is not given to outbursts of Spiritual Emotion. I told him about the “Home Gym”, and he expressed interest and set out early the next morning to “score” the home gym.

When he got back, we compared notes… but the home gym was already sold… but he bought several items and deemed the trip, 'Well Worth it'. The Prize that we Both shared however, was “Duane.” He too saw Duane in the living room and sat next to him and picked up where I had left off. On comparing notes, I said to him, “You know, it's not about being a missionary, it's not about selling your current favorite spiritual book, it's not about words at all. It's about being a Light “ My neighbor looked at me and said, “Your Right, Tommy. It's all about being a light.” …and grabbed my hand and said, “I Love your soul , brother.” I said, “I love Yours too. Whoever thought we'd be on the same team?”

Father,
Thank You for the “yard-sale treasure” I found…… Duane. May he Live forever. [Of Course, I Know he will. ;-)]

(From: - Mark Caine)
“The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself.”

(From: Attitude - by Charles Swindoll)
"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company....a church....a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude......I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you ....we are in charge of our Attitudes."

(From: The NASB Bible - Kings I 8:28)
Yet have regard to the prayer of Your servant and to his supplication, O LORD my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer which Your servant prays before You today;

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-91 Section-4)
All praying, whether individual or communal, may be either egoistic or altruistic. That is, the prayer may be centered upon the self or upon others. When the prayer seeks nothing for the one who prays nor anything for his fellows, then such attitudes of the soul tend to the levels of true worship. Egoistic prayers involve confessions and petitions and often consist in requests for material favors. Prayer is somewhat more ethical when it deals with forgiveness and seeks wisdom for enhanced self-control.

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-196 Section-0)
Jesus brought to God, as a man of the realm, the greatest of all offerings: the consecration and dedication of his own will to the majestic service of doing the divine will. Jesus always and consistently interpreted religion wholly in terms of the Father's will. When you study the career of the Master, as concerns prayer or any other feature of the religious life, look not so much for what he taught as for what he did.

(From:
Mahatma Gandhi)
"Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever."

(From: The Urantia Papers - Paper-146 Section-2)
The sincerity of any prayer is the assurance of its being heard; the spiritual wisdom and universe consistency of any petition is the determiner of the time, manner, and degree of the answer.

(From: The NASB Bible - Matthew 7:7-11)
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!

(From: The RSV Bible - Matthew 21:22)
And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith."

The Sermon
***********
When I was little, I used to wonder why some prayers got answered it seemed, while others went apparently unnoticed. Ya ever wonder about that?

Ever have one of those times when something Really Good happens to you and you say to yourself, "This was the answer to a prayer!"? I had one of those happen to me a while back, and then all of a sudden I realized that it was something I had first prayed for a Long, Long time ago... when I was still in grade school. It had seemed like a pretty good prayer at the time, and so I remember wondering why it didn't get answered. I also remembered at the time, a variety of other instances in my life when I prayed for essentially the same thing... perhaps using different words, maybe even "thinking" I was praying for something entirely different each time... but the "answer", when it finally came, truly was the answer to each and every one of those petitions. That was quite a life changing realization for me, because it made me think about how fortunate I was that it was answered now rather than then. Now... when I can the better appreciate it. Now... when I can the better benefit by it. Now... when I can honestly and truly say, "It was Worth the wait." Did God just not answer my earlier prayers, or was I maybe just not ready yet then for the answer?

I've found a new way to pray that works Every Time. I pray now for God's will to be manifest in my life. I don't so much ask God to give me things anymore, but rather to help me attain them if it is Her/His will that I have them. Rather than telling God what the answer to my prayer should look like, I ASK what it Should look like. Amazing the answers that are revealed, and in retrospect <G>, the perfectness of God's Timing in their revelation. Sure, they're seldom what or when I Imagined they might be... but ya know? They always turn out Better than I Could have imagined them to be. Go Figure. It's almost like God only wants Everything that is Best for me. Suppose?

When I was little, I used to wonder why some prayers got answered it seemed, while others went apparently unnoticed. Ya ever wonder about that?

"Quit dreaming."; "You can't change the World."; "The world is what it is."; "What can One person do?" I wonder if anybody ever said those kinds of things to Jesus, or Francis of Assisi, or Michelangelo, or William Shakespeare, or Abraham Lincoln, or Thomas Edison, or Henry Ford, or Albert Einstein, or Gandhi, or Mother Theresa? Ya think they would have listened? Ya think they Did? Anybody ever say those things to You? Did you believe them? Do you still believe them?

All you need is Love…..

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-47 Section-6)
A new social order is being introduced, one based on the understanding sympathy of mutual appreciation, the unselfish love of mutual service, and the overmastering motivation of the realization of a common and supreme destiny--the Paradise goal of worshipful and divine perfection. Ascenders are all becoming self-conscious of God-knowing, God-revealing, God-seeking, and God-finding.

(from: the Beatles)
All you need is Love…..

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-102 Section-7)
The intellectual earmark of religion is certainty; the philosophical characteristic is consistency; the social fruits are love and service.

(from: the Beatles)
All you need is Love…..

(From: The RSV Bible - Romans 12:6-18)
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; never be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.

(from: the Beatles)
All you need is Love…..

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-140 Section-4)
Strong characters are not derived from not doing wrong but rather from actually doing right. Unselfishness is the badge of human greatness. The highest levels of self-realization are attained by worship and service. The happy and effective person is motivated, not by fear of wrongdoing, but by love of right doing.

(from: the Beatles)
All you need is Love…..

(from: “Fruits of the Spirit” – edited by Angus Bowen and Karen O'Dell)
"Service is a gift. It has been seen as a duty, an obligation, a requirement,
-but in truth it is a service that you do for the Master in doing for his children. Loving service is not a labor of woe
but a labor of love. There is no sense of obligation, for these acts of love are done, these gifts are given, these services are rendered willingly. When your offering is done in love and willingly, it is a manifestation of your relationship with the First Source and Center who willingly serves you."

(from: the Beatles)
All you need is Love…..

(from: Ruth Benedict)
“The happiest excitement in life is to be convinced that one is fighting for all one is worth on behalf of some clearly seen and deeply felt good.”

(from: the Beatles)
All you need is Love…..

(from: the Tao Te Ching #67)
Some say that my teaching is nonsense. Others call it lofty but impractical. But to those who have looked inside themselves, this nonsense makes perfect sense. And to those who put it into practice, this loftiness has roots that go deep.

(from: the Beatles)

(from: TOMAS - September 14, 1999 Butler, PA)
The security of what you know in this world will not further your security in that which you cannot know except by faith.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-160 Section-1)
When men dare to forsake a life of natural craving for one of adventurous art and uncertain logic, they must expect to suffer the consequent hazards of emotional casualties--conflicts, unhappiness, and uncertainties--at least until the time of their attainment of some degree of intellectual and emotional maturity. Discouragement, worry, and indolence are positive evidence of moral immaturity. Human society is confronted with two problems: attainment of the maturity of the individual and attainment of the maturity of the race.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-160 Section-1)
Human life consists in three great drives--urges, desires, and lures. Strong character, commanding personality, is only acquired by converting the natural urge of life into the social art of living, by transforming present desires into those higher longings which are capable of lasting attainment, while the commonplace lure of existence must be transferred from one's conventional and established ideas to the higher realms of unexplored ideas and undiscovered ideals.
The more complex civilization becomes, the more difficult will become the art of living. The more rapid the changes in social usage, the more complicated will become the task of character development. Every ten generations mankind must learn anew the art of living if progress is to continue. And if man becomes so ingenious that he more rapidly adds to the complexities of society, the art of living will need to be remastered in less time, perhaps every single generation.

(from: The Urantia Papers - Paper-160 Section-1)
Successful living is nothing more or less than the art of the mastery of dependable techniques for solving common problems. The first step in the solution of any problem is to locate the difficulty, to isolate the problem, and frankly to recognize its nature and gravity. The great mistake is that, when life problems excite our profound fears, we refuse to recognize them. Likewise, when the acknowledgment of our difficulties entails the reduction of our long-cherished conceit, the admission of envy, or the abandonment of deep-seated prejudices, the average person prefers to cling to the old illusions of safety and to the long-cherished false feelings of security. Only a brave person is willing honestly to admit, and fearlessly to face, what a sincere and logical mind discovers.

(by: Albert Einstein 1879-1955)
True religion is real living; living with all one's soul, with all one's goodness and righteousness.

(from: Native American - Zitkala-Sa)
"A wee child toddling in a wonder world, I prefer to their dogma my excursions into the natural gardens where the voice of the Great Spirit is heard in the twittering of birds, the rippling of mighty waters, and the sweet breathing of flowers.

(a Zen Parable)
Once there was a well known philosopher and scholar who devoted himself to the study of Zen for many years. On the day that he finally attained enlightenment, he took all of his books out into the yard, and burned them all.

The Sermon
***********
After Four Years of abstinence, this week I finally stopped making excuses why I "Couldn't" and started Woodsculpting again. Why I ever stopped, I don't know for sure... Maybe I thought I was Too Busy doing other more Important things. I just Couldn't seem to get around to it. A tool I needed was broken, or there wasn't enough room, or whatever. God I'm glad I'm back with it again!!!

Carving was the very First place I ever discovered God working Through and With me. I knew it HAD to be God, because the results were so Very beyond my own "earned" capabilities. Certainly I went through all the physical motions of carving, but Mostly I was just watching it happen... amazed that it Was happening. In spite of the all too frequent times that my Ego tried to Make it happen alone, somehow my Soul won out and Let it happen... Together... a Partnership effort with God as my Partner. That's what it Felt, and now again Feels like to me.

There was a certain Fear of coming back to carving after a four year layoff. I Knew what I could do before... but... could I still Do it? Would I Succeed or fail this time? What if I messed up the piece I had already spent hundreds of hours on... the piece I had left half finished... the piece I was now Finally coming back to? Would it not be better to put it of for just a little more time? Somehow, my Soul won out again, and Let it happen... Together... a Partnership effort with God as my Partner. That's what it Feels like to me.

I haven't ruined it yet. In fact I am (once again) rather amazed to see how well the piece is evolving. It is very Close to being finished now. It is titled: "Eve, After..." and is the partner of "Adam, After..." [which you can see at : http://www.churchwithin.org/artwork.html ...if you wish]

As Truly there is a God, Each and Every One of us has been given a Gift... a Gift of Creativity of one sort or another... the Expression of which is an opportunity to experience the Hand of the Creator in our lives. In fact, we have each been given Many creative Gifts. The Ultimate adventure of life is to Discover and Use them. They are the things that just kinda seem to come Naturally to you when you do them... they are your Art. There is not a Single aspect of Life, of Living, that is without potential for artistic expression. None of us can be good at All of them, but All of us can be good at Some of them.

Art is the expression of our Souls in Partnership with God. Creativity rejuvenates the Spirit. Let your Soul Express itself... You'll be Glad you Did.

Now and Forever...
